Miscellany: Liberal Senate preselection, Being Chinese in Australia survey, Morgan polls (open thread)

Jockeying to fill Jim Molan’s Liberal Senate vacancy intensifies; Morgan finds weaker support for the Indigenous Voice than four months ago; and the Lowy Institute goes deep on the viewpoint of Chinese Australians.

Capping off the week with another New South Wales Liberal preselection tangle and three fresh poll results:

UPDATE (Resolve Strategic poll): Make that four, because it seems I missed the latest Resolve Strategic federal voting intention results from the Age/Herald, which are a stinker for the Coalition: Labor is up three to 42%, the Coalition down two to 28%, the Greens down one to 12% and One Nation up one to 6%. This puts Labor solidly north of 60% on two-party by my reckoning, and has caused an observable uptick for them on the BludgerTrack poll aggregate, as seen on the sidebar. Peter Dutton’s personal ratings take a particularly striking turn for the worse, with a six point drop in his combined very good and good rating to 26% and a ten point spike on poor and very poor to 54%, the latter encompassing an eleven point increase in very poor to 34%. Anthony Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister is out from 51-22 to 55-21, and he’s up one on approval to 56% and down two on disapproval to 29%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1609.

• The Liberals have opened nominations for a preselection to fill the party’s vacant New South Wales Senate seat following the death of Jim Molan in January, which will be held in late May. Max Maddison of The Australian reports moderates are dividing between state party president Maria Kovacic and former Bega MP and unsuccessful Gilmore candidate Andrew Constance. In the former’s favour is a view that the position should go to a woman, with Salesforce executive director Gisele Kapterian rated another moderate option if conservative opposition to Kovacic looks decisive. Factional lines are blurred to the extent that Kovacic has support from the centre right, while Constance is supported by Catholic Schools NSW chief executive Dallas McInerney, a conservative who was widely identified as the favourite for the position before he announced he would not run. Constance will reportedly establish an electorate office on the South Coast if successful as a springboard for another bid for Gilmore in 2025. A late potential contender is Katherine Deves, whose conservative positions on transgender issues made national headlines during her unsuccessful run for Warringah last year. However, Deves says she would stand aside if Warren Mundine, who along with Senator Jacinta Price has been the leading Aboriginal campaigner against the Indigenous Voice, responds to conservative entreaties to throw his hat into the ring.

• The Lowy Institute has published results from its third annual Being Chinese in Australia survey, conducted online from a sample of 1200 “Australian citizens, permanent residents or long-term visa holders who self-identified as having Chinese ancestry”, between September 27 to December 10. Among its findings were that 60% expressed confidence in Anthony Albanese to do the right thing in world affairs, compared with 29% for not much or none, while Peter Dutton respectively rated 25% and 56%. The sample was more favourable on this score towards Xi Jinping (42% confident, 47% not confident) and Vladimir Putin (29% and 58%) than the Australian public at large, and less favourable towards Joe Biden (34% and 55%) and Voldymyr Zelenskyy (32% and 51%). Asked the same question in relation to countries, the sample broke favourably by 75-25 for Australia, 61-40 for China, 54-46 for Taiwan, 53-47 for the United States and 51-49 for Japan.

Presumably reflecting the change of government, those rating Australia-China relations as a “critical threat to the vital interests of Australia in the next ten years” fell from 51% to 37%, while concern over military conflict between the United States and China was little changed at 36%. Only 15% professed themselves very concerned about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, compared with 69% for a similar question in another survey targeting the population at large. Twenty-seven per cent said AUKUS would make Australia more safe compared with 26% for less safe, and 52% and 7% respectively for the Australian population at large. Notable changes from last year’s results were an increase in agreement that “democracy is preferable to any other kind of government”, from 34% to 48%, and more favourable results on questions regarding whether Australia was a good place to live, or if respondents had personally been vilified because of their heritage. There was a drop in those saying Australian media reporting about China was too negative from 57% to 42%, with as many deeming if fair and balanced and 13% thinking it too positive.

• Roy Morgan has published results from an SMS survey conducted from 1181 respondents to Friday to Tuesday which found 46% saying they would vote yes to an Indigenous Voice with no at 39%, compared with 53% and 30% when it last conducted the exercise in December. The pollster’s weekly federal voting intention numbers have Labor’s two-party lead steady at 56-44, from primary votes of Labor 37%, Coalition 33% and Greens 12%.

  1. Katy Gallagher not caring about people on jobseeker is not surprising when she hated guys at work having better cloths than she had.

  2. I love how the Liberals leap to saying daft things like “The Voice will destroy ANZAC day.”

However, there is one thing that will destroy ANZAC day.
    Time.

We are down to the very last of the surviving WW2 soldiers, we are 30 or so years until we are in the same position with Vietnam. We are going to have very few former soldiers who have seen active combat in war settings.

At what point does it become irrelevant?

It won’t become irrelevant for its a public holiday and children march with their parents and grandparents medals and the defence force is an active part of government.

  4. Ukrainian Armed Forces, for the first time since February 2022, have obtained control of some territory on the left (eastern/southern) bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast:

“Russian milbloggers have provided enough geolocated footage and textual reports to confirm that Ukrainian forces have established positions in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast as of April 22 though not at what scale or with what intentions. Geolocated footage published by a Russian milblogger on April 22 shows that Ukrainian forces have established positions on the Dnipro River bank north of Oleshky (7km southwest of Kherson City) and advanced up to the northern outskirts of the settlement on the E97 highway, as well as west of Dachi (10km south of Kherson City). This footage also indicates that Russian forces may not control islands in the Kinka and Chaika rivers less than half a kilometer north of the geolocated Ukrainian positions near the Antonivsky Bridge. Russian milbloggers claimed on April 20 and 22 that Ukrainian forces have maintained positions in east bank Kherson Oblast for weeks, established stable supply lines to these positions, and regularly conduct sorties in the area—all indicating a lack of Russian control over the area. Another milblogger’s battle map claimed that Russian forces do not control some Dnipro River delta islands southwest of Kherson City as of April 22, suggesting possible Ukrainian advances on these islands. Some milbloggers complained that the slow rate of Russian artillery fire due to the over-centralization of the Russian military command allowed Ukrainian forces to land on the east bank. Russian forces may be prioritizing maintaining defenses in urban areas such as Oleshky and Nova Kakhovka, leaving the islands in the Dnipro River delta unmanned. The extent and intent of these Ukrainian positions remain unclear, as does Ukraine’s ability and willingness to maintain sustained positions in this area. ISW is recoding territory on the east bank of the Dnipro River to Ukrainian-held only now because this is the first time ISW has observed reliable geolocated imagery of Ukrainian positions on the east bank along with multi-sourced Russian reports of an enduring Ukrainian presence there.”

Feint, or main vector of intended advance in the south? Either way, this development means serious action there or elsewhere is imminent.

  6. Enough Already,
    See this?

The news received scant coverage in the main line media but the announcement at the Ramstein Conference yesterday that Ukraine has reached agreement with NATO to have direct access to the NSPA system is huge.

The NSPA is NATO’s system for procurement and acquisition as well as logistics. In essence, Ukraine can directly send in requisitions for what it needs to any of the NATO members who have it and the US(possibly in conjunction with the EU joint Ukraine fund) will foot the bill.

Ukraine may not officially be a member of NATO but it might as well be. As of April 21, 2023 Ukraine no longer has to wait for Ramstein pledges of arms to get what they need for the war. And its supporting countries do not have to make any public declarations … unless they choose to. One could also assume that this is a back door way for Ukraine to now be able to BUY fighter aircraft from NATO members who are willing to sell and Uncle Sam will backstop the deal? The Polish F-16s may be headed to Ukraine sooner than we think.

“Ukraine has reached unprecedented levels of interoperability with NATO. We are, de facto, already a part of the Alliance’s security space. I expressed my hope that this would expedite political decisions regarding our country’s NATO integration,”… Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii

    edition.cnn.com/…

And President Zelensky will be attending the next NATO Conference … in person.

This did not escape the notice of the Russians who are protesting loudly today. They know what this means.

  7. Once again we are talking about being over governed by three levels of government.
Yet we are also looking at increasing the number of MPs and Senators within the federal level.
How about we increase the numbers of all representatives in Local, State and Federal seats but scrap the FOURTH layer of government, which is all UPPER HOUSES.
It will be a WIN WIN situation.

26,000 Australians served in Afghanistan. So your question is moot for another 70-80 years. Other than that it would be nice to think that some time around 2100 Australia will finally be able to observe an ANZAC day without the presence of war veterans.

  19. Lars.

No. The king will take the Coronation Oath. Albanese is not being crowned so won’t be taking any sort of Coronation oath. He has already taken his oath of office on becoming PM. He does not have to do it again.

The UK is as much a “sovereign realm” as the others so there are 15.

  20. Albo goes for junket – Charles gets an oath of allegiance as a quid pro quo from one of the sovereign realms.

  21. Who the Fuck is Charles III? Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

No doubt i will be forced to watch it on television as my beloved Wife is a current affairs junky and will rightly point out that there has not been a relevant coronation since 1953 (Dead Lizzy ascended to the throne in ’52 but was not coronated for another year.) She’s right, of course – but I really could not give a fat rats.

And no the sovereign does the oath swearing, not his faithful subjects. The PMs of the Commonwealth attend as a mark of respect. (We love a good colonisation down here in these parts.)

Deb Frecklington said she had ‘no choice but to remain grounded’ because she had children, and said the premier’s fashion choices were ‘too much’

LNP LOTO Deb Frecklington, criticised Annastacia Palaszczuk for her fashion choices and said she had “no choice but to remain grounded” because she had children.

In an interview with the Sunday Mail, Frecklington said Palaszczuk had “deliberately changed her image – the whole ‘Princess Palaszczuk’ is pretty obvious – but I haven’t changed mine”.

“I have no choice but to remain grounded, because of [my husband] Jason and the girls,” Frecklington said.
“I can have a tough day but then I’ll get a call from one of my kids and you’ve got to deal with whatever’s going on in their lives. She, on the other hand, has had a complete makeover – all the makeup, the designer labels, it’s too much, when there are bigger issues to focus on.”

Frecklington has three children between the ages of 17 and 21.

Palaszczuk has spoken openly about having had a miscarriage, unsuccessful attempts to have a child through IVF, and her painful history of endometriosis, which can affect fertility.

  28. No assembly as yet OC – joint rule from Dublin and Ireland seems a more likely outcome.

    Well done Sir Jeffrey ?

  29. Oh dear. The ‘unity’ of the NSW Liberals didn’t last long. It seems the Moderates V the Conservatives battle has a ways to run yet:

Newly elected NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman’s authority over the embattled party is already facing its first test, after his main leadership rival labelled the push to change party rules to allow his pick for deputy to take the job as “curious”.

Speakman was elected opposition leader during Friday’s party room meeting, winning the ballot 22 votes to 13 against former planning minister Anthony Roberts.

But the vote for his deputy was delayed because his pick for the job, former roads minister Natalie Ward, is from the state’s upper house, which means installing her requires a change of party rules.

While Roberts insisted Speakman had his “full support” following the ballot, he said the push to change Liberal Party rules to install Ward as his deputy was “curious”.

“Mark has my full support and I will continue to push for party reform – early preselection, more community-based pre-selections and engagement,” he said.

“For me it’s about ensuring we are focused on the people of NSW and not ourselves. We have had 12 years to change party room rules. The fact we arrived and had a motion, which I didn’t even see, is a bit curious.”

Roberts, a member of the party’s right, had hoped to make Ward, a moderate, the leader of the party in the upper house if he was successful. However he was coy on whether she should become deputy, saying it was a “matter for the party”.

If Albo was opposed to the coronation he wouldn’t be attending said coronation would he ?
His presence alone is recognition of Australia’s subordinate relationship to the Monarch.

President Emmanuel Macron of France will be attending the coronation. But this is not because of France’s subordinate relationship to the UK (unless King Charles had another crack at the Hundred Years War that I was not aware of). President Macron is attending because of France’s ‘friendship, respect and esteem’ for the UK. Maybe PM Albanese is going for essentially the same reason.

I know Albo is Labor, and therefore you are hard-wired to despise him. But even taking that into account – you do come up with some ridiculous shit. If PM Albanese was not going to the coronation you would have a shot at him about that. Anything to have a go at Albo.

  32. While the Australian flag is still ‘the British flag at night’ it would be churlish for Albo not to be at the coronation, whether he wants to or not.

  33. Not to mention the opportunity for Albo for a decent chinwag with a who’s who list of world leaders that would never all get together outside a formal summit – you only get that fortune with funerals for Presidents and PMs

There was a great Yes Prime Minister episode that exploited a former PMs funerals for diplomatic/political gains.

  34. Last time I checked shogun France was not a sovereign realm of the Britisher Royal Family.

I think you’ll find there is a specific reference to Australia in the coronation ceremony. Albo’s presence is condoning that subordinate relationship.

Albo could easily have left it to the GG to attend the ceremony but explicitly chose to attend.

  36. I’m okay with Albo going to the coronation because even if Australia was a republic we would be a member of the commonwealth and its a chance for Albo to catch up with other world leaders.

Maiden said ‘Chalmers has a PhD in Paul Keating’ with her trademark smirk.

In fact the treasurer has a 1st Class Honours degree in economics, a Masters in Public Admin and Policy from London School of Economics and a PhD in Political Science.

Our press really are an ignorant lot. I do not know why the ABC puts on a show to show how ignorant they are.
