Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

Newspoll returns after three weeks to find the situation all but totally unchanged.

One Nation are off two points on the primary vote, from 8% to 6%, but the latest Newspoll is otherwise as dull as it gets. Labor’s lead on two-party preferred is unchanged at 52-48, both major parties are unchanged at 38% on the primary vote, the Greens are up one to 10%. Malcolm Turnbull is up a point on both approval and disapproval, to 40% and 50% respectively; Bill Shorten is down one to 33% and steady on 55%. Turnbull leads 46-31 on preferred prime minister, compared with 47-30 last time. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday, presumably from a sample of about 1600.

Seriously GG, please get over this ‘blaming of all men in the case of Ms Dixon’ . The blokes on this forum are getting so upset it is sad.
It is simple men are the perpetrators why cant this be discussed without every poster / man saying it wouldnt have happened if she kept safe.

Because, this is a random event that occurred because the victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I agree the perp was a male predator. But, as others have pointed out, if this hadn’t been Ms Dixon, it probably would have been someone else.

I don’t blame Ms Dixon in any way, shape or form.

All I’ve said is that I taught my children to be aware of potential danger and protect themself at all times. Making this crime a platform to espouse “general male violence” rhetoric is an insult to Ms Dixon and does not advance the search for a solution to that broader and more endemic problem imho.

  2. I once got chased by “poofer bashers” seeking to do me harm simply because i was walking past a park in Sydney.

Just as well you weren’t carrying one of these then!

    🙂

‘But don’t underestimate female group violence. It does happen.’

Oh, sigh. I have documented here that I have been a victim of this, and that the girls concerned went on to rape another girl.

96% of murders are committed by men. Therefore there is a problem which is clearly gender linked.

As I’ve said before, this isn’t a men v women thing but an issue around culture, something we are all responsible for.

But until we get past that first hurdle of acceptance, particularly in a society which is still very patriarchal in structure, we can’t even begin to work towards solutions.

    Well said Zoomster.

It seems more than passing strange that these things still have to be explained over and over again.

  4. Cheers Bemused – not expecting all men to apologize , just that the discussion goes further and men need to listen and understand causes.

I do not believe violence is isolated and learnt from others,.

I strongly believe men yes all men need to change ( including me ) this forum and some of the posts on here enforces that.

Do you tremble in fear at night when you realise that a woman is walking behind you? Or even a group of women?

    And that’s the point.

I thought the point was that everyone is entitled to feel safe walking around in public places, regardless of their gender, the size of their party, and the time of day/night. And that nobody is entitled to assault, rape, or murder another person regardless of where that other person happens to be walking, with whom, or when.

And that anyone who does the latter thing is entirely to blame for their actions, and the person who went for a walk is not at all to blame.

It’s much less to do with which gender an imaginary attacker takes on in a person’s irrational fears, and much more to do with the fact that such irrational fears are being accepted, encouraged, and normalized to the point where victims are being chastised for not having let such fears control their lives. To which I can only say… 🙄

It’s exactly the same kind of fear-mongering nonsense that fuels the U.S. style gun nuts. Australia doesn’t need it.

  6. On autism spectrum disorder, people with ASD are not more likely to be violent than those without but there are a group who have problems with serial violence (as there are for those without ASD). People with ASD are more likely to become mass murderers than those without ASD (mainly school spree killings so it is probably only a US thing).

OK, so there are places where it is dangerous for a person of either gender to venture at certain hours.

Question: who poses the danger in these situations?

Do you tremble in fear at night when you realise that a woman is walking behind you? Or even a group of women?

It has been readily acknowledged here that the perpetrators of these terrible crimes are predominantly men. What is your point?

  8. I think Turnbull is pushing the full tax cuts package so hard because he wants to get a double dissolution trigger, so he can be tricky if he needs to…

  9. Now that Turnbull has become personally involved in OptusFail, if it goes to shit again I think he will make them put it on SBS as well as on their crappy streaming service. He defunded SBS and killed the NBN so he’s got skin in this game.

    It only takes one.

As others have pointed out, this is a rare crime. So, running with averages and probabilities doesn’t help understand this particular incident.

  11. Another IPA drone, Chris Berg was on ABC radio Sydney as I left work.

In his ‘bio’ his membership of the IPA was not mentioned.

Why does the ABC continue to give extensive airtime to an organisation dedicated to its eradication?

  12. LU
Yes, the numbers are very small. It was 6/75 in a population of 400 million. And people with ASD weren’t more likely to be more violent in any other area.

I don’t think the exposure does much for their or the Libs popularity.
Chris Berg is co-author of their book advocating selling the ABC.
In Melbourne we got Simon Breheeny.

May they get much more exposure and their links with the Libs get well publicised.

A man probably is more likely to be murdered than a woman in bad, poorly-lit areas of a city.

Exactly, it’s about 4 to 1, and the man will be just as dead as the women.

The difference might be because women are a little more careful and don’t go wandering around poorly-lit areas of a city; but that is not what is being argued for here; the argument is for men to change so that women can wander where they please. What is the goal to get the ratio higher than 4 to 1.

If you want to start condemning loosely related groups; every man has a mother; they tend to be women; they need to lift their game. I should add that I think that is as empty an argument as all men should take responsible for the violence of others.

  15. Well that didn’t take long.
SBS to take over covering the World Cup for the next 48 hours at least. Big win for Turnbull and SBS; big loss for Optus.

  16. SBS to broadcast all WC matches for the next 48 hours, while Optus try to fix things up.

    Football wins

  17. @Diogenes

The biggest losers is us, we paying for both Optus and Telstra networks, while we building a second rate Fraudband.

  18. I imagine that there are a few Korean War vets who would have choked on their chokeberries seeing Trump salute an NK officer.

What would Reg Saunders have said if he saw this shit.

Let alone all those parents of deceased soldiers from that conflict that influence Trump’s decisions.

  20. It is simple men are the perpetrators why cant this be discussed without every poster / man saying it wouldnt have happened if she kept safe.

    Scout

Because it wouldn’t have. That is obvious and surely an important point to be making when the main aim is to stop these tragedies from happening.

I note from an earlier post that you have a daughter. So do I and I am always on the lookout for matters concerning her safety. That is why I pick her up from the railway station whenever she is coming home in the dark. It is also why I would advise her not to be walking through dark parks alone at 2.30 in the morning.

Just as a matter of interest, what advice would you give your daughter if she said she was going to walk through such a place alone late at night. Go ahead, be your own person, you are entitled to be safe wherever you go? Or would you caution her about the risks?

I posted a general question along those lines earlier today when the discussion first began and almost no-one replied. I wonder why. Hopefully you will be a bit more forthcoming.

  21. The hypocrisy of the Libs to slam the public broadcasters and threaten to ditch them and then turn around and get them to save a private company which could not deliver a national event is breathtaking. And Turnbull will no doubt bask in the reflected glory.

  22. BW@6:23pm
Indeed. I think not only Korean vets but vets of other wars and serving US military officers must have choked. (Rumour has it that a lot of US military called sick on that day because of choking 🙂 ) The armtice is still in place. The war has not ended officially. But what did Trump do. He salutes a Korean military officer. Mind boggling.

  24. I tactfully suggest that GG and Boomy1 repair to another room for further exploration of the touchy feely nexus between the Naked Ape and Das Kapital.
