Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

Malcolm Turnbull records an eight-point deterioration in his net approval rating, as Labor’s lead on voting intention widens still further.

Newspoll breaks out of its 53-47 straitjacket to record a 54-46 lead for Labor, from primary vote of Coalition 35% (down one), Labor 38% (up two), Greens 9% (down two) and One Nation 9% (up one). Leadership ratings also record substantial change for the first time a while, with Malcolm Turnbull down three on approval to 35% and up five on disapproval to 55%, and Bill Shorten down two to 34% and up three to 54%. Malcolm Turnbull leads 43-33 as preferred prime minister, down from 46-31 last time. The poll was conducted from a sample of 1675 from Thursday to Sunday. The Australian’s paywalled report here.

  1. Conservatives Seize On Hugely Flawed Study About Same-Sex Parents

    Read all about it!

The new study comes from Donald Paul Sullins, a Catholic priest and sociology professor at Catholic University of America. Sullins is a fellow of the Marriage and Religion Research Institute, a project of the anti-LGBT Family Research Council, and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, which has funneled millions of dollars into fighting marriage equality over the past decade. In 2010, he co-wrote a study suggesting that female homosexuality was somehow connected to growing up in a broken home, and when he has written about same-sex marriage, he uses scare quotes around the word “marriage.”

Conservatives praise these studies for their large samples, eagerly highlighting their negative results while ignore the distortions required to arrive at them. A recent large study from Australia with a similarly-sized pool of same-sex parents who had actually raised children together as couples found that the children have quite positive outcomes. Indeed, there are ample studies that consistently justify the medical community’s support for same-sex couples to have equal access to marriage and joint adoption for their families. As Regnerus himself pointed out, when researchers don’t conflate same-sex families with unstable homes, the results are positive.

    C@t

Sullins is a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus 😀

No relation to the KKK though:

What connection does or did the Knights of Columbus have with the KKK?
None whatsoever. The Knights Of Columbus are a Catholic public service organization, and entirely above board. The KKK was functionally a terrorist group that in fact persecuted Catholics. You may be thinking of The Knights of the White Camelia. Update: There IS a connection between the two groups: in the 1920s the Knights of Columbus actively worked AGAINST the KKK in Oklahoma, who, as stated above, had a history of persecuting American Catholics.

  3. 92% of children raised by Gay parents are abused.

This is may be true, but the source of the abuse is probably as a result intolerance and hatred from people like the ones who created this obscenity rather than within the family.

  4. Yes, it’s rather disingenuous to leave off the by whom part. Especially if the only actors mentioned in the sentence are “Gay parents”. It’s like, implicit libel, or something.

  5. Is the change to green name headings and tiny print in comments – in some instances – something planned, an experiment or just another interesting display variation on PB at the moment?

  6. Also, no definition of abuse was given, and it’s not in a reputable journal. So they could have defined ‘teaching people that being gay is alright’ as abuse. Then you automatically get high rates of abuse amongst children of gay parents.

  7. Some grudging respect?

Glad @billshortenmp is not joining the parade of muppets demanding constitutional reform because the Greens & Nats can’t read a form

  8. Or demanding constitutional reform, because it creates 2nd class citizens who would have to spend thousands of $ and give up easier travel to go see relatives if they wanted to run 6th on a Labor ticket, 3rd on The Greens etc.

  9. I’m frankly baffled why Shorten doesn’t present his paperwork. Tony Jones will give him a very rough going over on that tonight – and rightly so in my view. These are unusual times. It’s not unreasonable to expect a person in Shorten’s position to lay out his paperwork.

Don’t know about spending thousands, and as for the easier travel, that’s one of the weakest arguments for changing the constitution.

  11. I think Labor wants to have one of it’s MP’s referred to the HC, so that they can put their procedure on the record. Which from what I can discern is quite comprehensive, compared to the slip-shod methods of all other parties.

  12. ….”alias…….I’m frankly baffled why Shorten doesn’t present his paperwork.”…….
Why should he. The Coalition are trying the “guilty until proven innocent line”
I get the feeling he KNOWS he is OK . He is playing with the LNP.
Would be great to see him produce his documentation on Q & A tonight.

  13. Why should he. The Coalition are trying the “guilty until proven innocent line”

Yes and also trying to make Labor the focus of attention.

    Same old same old.

    Nothing much really changes.

  14. Tony Jones will give him a very rough going over on that tonight – and rightly so in my view.

No shit Sherlock! Tony Jones will give him a hard time on anything and everything, so what does it matter?

  15. Bill Shorten has absolutely no need to present his citizenship documentation for public scrutiny..

..if anyone has any evidence he is a dual citizen, then put up or shut up!! Bill has been publicly vilified enough already for no more than being a very effective union leader & politician..

    Not unreasonable at all.

  17. The Coalition have just got the shotgun out hoping someone from Labor has slipped up, just to remove some of the heat from themselves.

They have no evidence to suggest that any Labor Member is in conflict with the Constitution so basically they should be told to get stuffed.

  18. In the unlikely event Shorten was found to be ineligible to sit the polls suggest a new leader would deliver a much greater election victory for the ALP.

  19. Don’t know about spending thousands, and as for the easier travel, that’s one of the weakest arguments for changing the constitution.

Ironically enough for a discussion about senators not knowing something that they could have discovered with a quick Google, Adrian, you not knowing something or bothering to Google it does not make it false.

Cost to renounce US citizenship is $2350. That meets the criteria of ‘thousands’ for almost all historical exchange rates.

  20. To Sonar and others .. This is not some bloody parlour game. This is serious stuff. I can’t for the life of me imagine why Shorten wouldn’t be able to achieve a small victory of sorts by presenting his paperwork. He could say: “See I told you we had proper vetting checks in place. Cop that.” Failing to do so fosters doubt even in the minds of someone like myself on the progressive side of politics.

  21. Newspoll makes it clear how terribly bad this Govt is when the party led by such an unpopular leader has a clear lead.

I can’t imagine he won’t produce the paperwork.

  23. Perhaps Shorten has been saving it up for Q&A. Not a bad idea perhaps. Allow Tony Jones to start hyperventiling, then casually pass it across the table. That could work – although it would beg the question: why wait so long. However, on balance, such a disclosure would serve to ramp up the pressure on the other side.

  24. If any one really gives a toss about PPM, I asked William about the value of incumbency.

IIRC he suggested it was worth about 16% with 2% adjustment for the 2PP.

Using that measure Turnbull’s 10% lead reduces to about 2%.

  25. No difficulty there Sonar. I’m in Melbourne and it’s more than chilly, it’s been very cold indeed today.

My approach to an issue like this is that I’m not hype-partisan like many here. I take a look at something like Shorten refusing to disclose and I reach the obvious conclusion: It looks dodgy.

Couldn’t the same be said of every single MP, apart from the ones that have been referred to the HC already? Why aren’t aren’t you calling on all of them to present their paperwork?

I would support an audit of all current MP’s to ensure their compliance with s44 (and weed out any that aren’t). But I don’t see how demanding just one of them to produce documentary evidence makes sense. Either everyone should do it, or none of them should have to.

  27. By the by, it occurred to me the other day: we know have a sound explanation of why Barnaby talks such gibberish. His father’s name was James Joyce. Barnaby often sounds like a page of Ulysses opened at a random page.

  28. alias,

If Labor concede to baseless demands it just encourages more Liberal fishing trips in an attempt to divert attention from their problems.

  29. No AR I’m not. The situation here is that we know Shorten’s father is from Britain. Also, to state the obvious, he’s leader of the Opposition. If he had the appropriate paperwork, then presenting it would surely serve to stymie the ongoing calls for other Labor MPs to present their paperwork.

  30. Why the hell would Shorten release his paperwork to anyone other than the high court?

If any Labor person shows the media, then every Labor person will be expected to do it. And the ‘what have they got to hide’? nonsense will be louder the more Labor people have already shown.

Shorten is relatively confident in his team’s paperwork, more confident that any other party leader I’m sure. but not 100% certain.

So if he shows his paperwork, he sets off a chain reaction that may lead him to lose someone.

And then the Coalition would just refuse to release their paperwork.

    Shorten has a few options.

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.

Taunt Turnbull into unilaterally sending someone to the HC and taking the reputational hit from breaking convention. Then reveal their documents to the HC.
