Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

After a career-threatening result for Malcolm Turnbull three weeks ago, Newspoll records the Coalition bouncing back to near-competitiveness.

Newspoll records a much improved result for the Coalition, with Labor’s two-party lead cut from 55-45 to 52-48. The Coalition is up three on the primary vote to 37%, Labor is down two to 35%, One Nation are steady on 10%, and the Greens are down one to 9%. Malcolm Turnbull is up one on approval to 30% and down two on disapproval to 57%; Bill Shorten is down one to 29% and up one to 57%; and Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister has improved from 40-33 to 43-29. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1819. Report from The Australian.

  1. I’d have thought the natural progression for chair of Beyond Blue would be Eddie McGuire and then Alan Jones, give that Jeff was the last one.

A Darwin award (honourable mention, better luck next time) for that man!

In an unregulated market, there are more males born than females. Something like 103/100 from memory.

Then the numbers of males in the population keep dropping because males succumb to diseases more readily than females, then they drop further when puberty is reached because of dumb behaviour from males like this.

By the time they reach the age cohort of 30+, there are not enough eligible males for eligible females to choose from.

You are posting data from the AEMO March Report specifically about existing costs (ie present and past costs) of power sources in South Australia as evidence of what the relative costs of various sources of power will be all over the place, in the future as the technologies continue to develop.

This really isn’t a credible or creditable strategy to support your argument is it.

You need to be careful comparing the efficiency of batteries to that of pumped hydro. It’s not a like for like comparison.

When discussing the efficiency of batteries you need to factor in the transformer losses (generation source to battery, then DC battery to AC grid; how much is dependent upon a few things but they can be up to 10% loss each) into the equation. Added to that, lithium based batteries suffer a degradation in their storage capacity over their useful working lives and can’t go to 100% depth of discharge without significant damage to the battery.

Flow batteries don’t suffer degradation in their storage capacity over their useful working life and are designed to go to 100% depth of discharge without damage, but have worse round trip efficiency than lithium batteries.

Thanks for your various posts about renewables and engineering generally. They are very informative, and clearly expressed in plain English.

Kennett won’t be hacking Julia down. It was his decision to approach and appoint her. It was timely and dead right. He was an inspiring founder. She is the perfect replacement.

  10. P1, from that AEMO report:

Using constant generation at nearly fully capacity (83% capacity factor), and gas prices of between $6.80 a gigajoule (GJ) and $8.50/GJ, AEMO estimates a CCGT would require an average electricity price of around $83 a megawatt hour (MWh) to cover its investment and operating costs

An 83% capacity factor? You’d want to check that assumption against reality.

This really isn’t a credible or creditable strategy to support your argument is it.

    Actually, yes it is.

I was pointing out the incorrect current costing data given in the article posted by Trog, not trying to make some point about future costings.

To do so, I used the latest costing data for energy production in South Australia, compiled by the energy market operator, and published just days ago.

It completely annihilates the the point Trog tried to make … which, in case you missed it was …

Ex Hazelwood boss says solar + storage already cheaper than gas

This is simply and demonstrably untrue. So as usual, RenewEconomy publishes a blatantly false article using out-of-date information provided by a solar spruiker, and Trog immediately jumps all over it and publishes it here on PB thinking (without checking) that it will support his nonsense. Then the usual suspects jump all over it assuming it must be true.

Are you beginning to see a pattern here?

  14. Going back to Trump for a minute, I agree with those who say he is not the issue per se. It is his supporters and where they stand when it comes to the mid-terms two years hence. If the rust belt starts to hurt then the GOP could lose control of at least one if not two of the Houses. While this is a long shot, the effect will be to stall a ton of legislation which Trump hopes both Houses will agree to. I have read that while it was easy to ditch Obamacare, constructing a replacement, any kind of replacement, might take the whole of the next four years. The tax cuts are also in the same boat. I gather that some GOP representatives are getting a very rough ride in some of the public forums they are attending. However, I still hold that while the rest of the world might think Trump vile, they do not vote in America.

It won’t be long before Malcolm is briefing his mates in the CPG that this is really a clever way to circumvent the no. 1 argument of the right in his party against abandoning the plebiscite.

  16. Grimace
    Good points about battery efficiency.
If you had pumped hydro co-located with wind or solar, then this would be the best of both worlds. Once you have to transmit/trade energy through the market then efficiency – both electrical and financial – drops considerably.
Or, as Trump would say, bigly.

Newspoll closes the gap, Essential in today’s guardian widens it 45 – 55. Who to believe?

    That’s easy. 55-45 sounds right to me. : )

The Newspoll is looking a bit lonely, the next will probably make it look a rogue.

Also, despite most pre-election polls in WA giving the ALP a handy 54-46 TPP lead, those polls still underestimated the ALP primary and overestimated the LIB primary.

    Turnbull: “Thanks for your editorial”

  22. Thanks Psyclaw.

On the issue of batteries versus pumped hydro. The difference in efficiency isn’t as drastic as it sounds. It affects how much excess capacity needs to be designed into solar and wind sources and that affects capital. As these things get cheaper it gets easier to over provision.

Distribution losses are an argument for co-locating sources and storage. For instance you could put a pumped hydro system on the cliff top near the Princes Highway and surround it with wind and solar. In other places where its not easy to build pumped hydro but there is a good solar resource you might be better co-locating battery.

  23. I have read that while it was easy to ditch Obamacare

Come again? They haven’t even managed to do that yet. Cant agree on the terms, legislation already looks doomed in the Senate and doubtful in terms of even passing the House.

  24. libertarian unionist @ #663 Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 12:58 pm

An 83% capacity factor? You’d want to check that assumption against reality.

That’s a maximum figure, as stated in the report. The same report gives solar a 28-32% maximum capacity figure (depending on technology), and wind a 42% maximum capacity figure. The sensitivity of the costing to the capacity factor is discussed extensively in the report.

“Then the numbers of males in the population keep dropping because males succumb to diseases more readily than females, then they drop further when puberty is reached because of dumb behaviour from males like this. ”

I’ve been told (though I haven’t seen the hard stats) that this dumb behaviour is why the average life expectancy of males is lower than females. It’s not so much because elderly women outlive elderly men. It’s because of a spike in male mortality in their teens and early 20’s, which drives male longevity down. Reason: dumb, high-risk behaviour by young men.

  26. Trog, wouldn’t it be better to have batteries at the point of usuage. Thus eliminating transmission loss when the erg is needed. The energy loss would occur when the batteries are charged from a far away point, but it doesn’t matter that much as it is ‘spare’ energy anyway.

  27. AR

    “Come again?”

    That’s what she said. 😉

“They haven’t even managed to do that yet. Cant agree on the terms, legislation already looks doomed in the Senate and doubtful in terms of even passing the House.”

The Republicans are divided. There are those who hate Obamacare and want the entire thing repealed, at any cost. And there are those who want to salvage something out of Obamacare, if only to prevent an electoral backlash when millions of Americans lose their coverage.

  28. Well that clears it up. I can insult and offend to my heart’s content so long as I don’t harass. Hell, who is going to sort that out when insulting stops and harassing starts.

  29. I see Paul Karp keeps getting his questions ignored by Turnbull. I hope this isnt starting a thing to avoid questions from certain articles (ala Trump).

Turnbull deserves everything coming to him after today as far as I’m concerned. I admittedly know very few PMs but he is the worst by a country mile.

  30. PeeBee

Trog, wouldn’t it be better to have batteries at the point of usage.

It depends on your perspective. If you are a consumer local battery storage gives you protection against an outage. If you are a generator, local battery storage means you can sell into the peak market.

  31. Tricot.

Trump showed he was not fit to be president during the campaign but when he was elected I was concerned he could “do a Howard”. Take on a presidential demeanor and ride an improving economy and take all the credit.

I no longer have such concern. I can’t even take him seriously enough to get angry. Getting angry at Trump is like getting angry at a toddler.

  32. Tricot Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 1:03 pm

. However, I still hold that while the rest of the world might think Trump vile, they do not vote in America.

    **********************************************************
Going back over old ground Tricot – but the pre-polling of the US elections seemed like a lay down misere for Hillary and that deluded a whole of people into not bothering to vote – let alone just not wanting to vote for her anyways – and Trump just rode in on those factors ….

I guess it is just going to take time and perhaps a whole lot of broken promises/losses on health care, jobs etc etc ….. for some – but obviously not all the rusted-ons – of those people who did vote for Trump to realise they made a mistake.

He is just in a long line of charlatan demagogues like Jim Jones, Jim Baker, L. Ron Hubbard ….. that suck people in despite criticism and scorn and promise them the world …… but in reality are total frauds …………………..

  33. Tricot – my understanding of Obamacare – from reading Krugman – is that the subsidies are built into the scheme long-term. So if they can’t have it repealed it will continue on without interference. It won’t just die of neglect. Presently, it’s hard to see enough Repugs voting for repeal in the Senate.

Newcastle has had buckets of rain over the last couple of weeks and has been quite warm to boot.
The council has graced us with a concrete footpath terminating a few yards from my place.
I have a corner block and mow the grass in sections. Each section gives me my self allocated couple of kilometers of walking.

On another matter concerning Mr. Greg Hunt.

I think that not only would he not suit the Victorians, he would not suit Edwardians, Stuarts or Windsors.
Maybe he would, as a dedicated Christian have suited Oliver Cromwell with his Irish expeditions.
Peace in our time. Eastern daylight ❓
