Polls: Indigenous voice, leadership approval, skills shortages (open thread)

Strong support in principle for an Indigenous voice to parliament; a largely positive response to the Jobs Summit from those who noticed it; and no sign of the sheen coming off Anthony Albanese.

Time for a new open thread post, though I don’t have a whole lot to hang one off. There’s always US pollster Morning Consult’s tracking poll on approval of Anthony Albanese, which continues to record no significant change since June, with Albanese currently on 60% approval and 27% disapproval. This gives him the third best result of 22 international leaders being followed by the pollster, behind India’s Nahendra Modi and Mexico’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

There are also two new sets of supplemental results from last week’s Resolve Strategic poll in the Age/Herald:

• A series of questions on outcomes from the Jobs Summit published on Saturday had favourable results for multi-employer bargaining, more TAFE places and allowing older Australians to earn more before losing the aged pension, but only 34% in favour of the increased migration intake, with 33% opposed. Only 24% rated themselves “definitely aware” of the recent Jobs Summit, compared with 38% for “vaguely aware” and 38% for unaware. Thirty-six per cent agreed it had achieved its (non-political) objectives compared with 19% who disagreed and 46% who were either undecided or neutral.

• The Age/Herald had a further result yesterday showing a 64-36 break in favour of a constitutionally enshrined Indigenous voice, evidently based on a forced response. Clear majorities were recorded in all states, and while there is no reason to be dubious about this, the Tasmanian sample especially would obviously have been exceedingly small.

Other than her former Chief of Staff, who arguably did not actually rush to do so, no detractors have rushed to judgement. OTOH, this might not be asserted in relation to her hagiographers.

It could well be that, as Thorpe avers, the two recipients of her wisdom were foolishly acting as roadblocks on the road to justice for Indigenous people.

All that said, Bwana’s silence on the matter is deafening.

Before her detractors rush to judgment, Thorpe should be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations against her.

    [‘Mavis,
The allegation was made by her former senior adviser. Plus, she has already responded multiple times to the accusations seeking to minimise the severity of their nature. I don’t think you’ll get any more than that from her, tbh.’]

I can’t say I’ve heard Thorpe respond to the very specific allegations of her former chief of staff, but accept your and zoomster’s account that she has. I’d add though that now the incident has received such prominence, the precepts of natural justice should apply on the basis that her accusers may have an axe to grind, not uncommon in politics.

If you’re so fond of evidence, I suggest you read the article I posted. It’s not about her CoS’s claims (as anyone who had read it would realise) but the original complaints made (in writing) by the two elders.

Her CoS (now an ex- ) is simply confirming that their complaint was accurate.

  5. “Before her detractors rush to judgment, Thorpe should be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations against her.”

My opinions as to Thorpe are informed by both media reports, AND actually watching vids of her, listening to what she is saying, and her manner while she is saying it.

Have seen nothing so far to suggest she is not an arrogant self interested fwarkwit who is and has been using the Greens as a vehicle to provide HER with a platform and profile. I’m still expecting at least a brief dose of Greens #leadershit before she goes her own way as an independent Senator.

Have found it interesting though that the Albanese Govt still seems to be putting in the work to have a good working relationship from day 1 with the cross-benchers in the HoR. Godd move by them i think.

  6. Two minutes to go; I’m not sure what the white stripe on the dark edge of Dimorphos is.

Update: it looks like a successful impact on the rocky surface of Dimorphos.

  7. remember when Zoomster alleged that Thorpe had been kicked out of the Uluru Convention?
This mornings’ report has given her a spring in her step!

Amazing how many tankies cling to the belief that they, and Mother Russia, are the real victims. Snowden took his stolen goods straight to Russia, Greenwald a mere useful idiot, Assange worked with Putin to sabotage US elections, and still they view them as heroes.”…

I spend some time posting in Independent Australia, and the site attracts a group of people who define themselves as Marxists. They are staunch anti-US (as you would expect from a traditional Marxist), but they are also staunch pro-Putin Russia. I have asked them a million times what’s so Marxist about Putin (he might have been in his youth, presumably, certainly not now), with his support for oligarchs, the Russian Orthodox Church, private enterprises for his mates, accounts in foreign banks, imperialistic military invasion of sovereign countries such as Ukraine, etc…. Of course, they never reply.

    Donald Trump is not stupid:

From Maggie Haberman’s “Three Conversations With Donald Trump”

Can you believe these are my customers?” Donald Trump once asked while surveying the crowd in the Taj Mahal casino’s poker room. “Look at those losers,” he said to his consultant Tom O’Neil, of people spending money on the floor of the Trump Plaza casino. Visiting the Iowa State Fair as a presidential candidate in 2015, he was astounded that locals fell in line to support him because of a few free rides in his branded helicopter. In the White House, he was sometimes stunned at his own backers’ fervor, telling aides, “They’re fucking crazy.” Yet they loved him and wanted to own a piece of him, and that was what mattered most.

Trump has exposed the ugly side of USA like never before. He exposed
    1. The weak points of political system,
    2. About psyche of half of American people,
    3. Brought the evil people of USA into open,
    4. Changed Republican party people into raving lunatics,
    5. Made half of American people to accept Russians and Putin as good guys.
    6. Made three branches of government (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary) participate in Jan 6 overthrow of government.

I can go on and on and on.

  10. Right thinking Australians ought to want their nation to be a republic led by a president rather than by a protestant King or Queen of England. Even the local self-effacing should want it if only for international and national self-respect, says Jack Waterford.
    https://johnmenadue.com/no-guts-no-glory-in-deposing-the-king/
    ————
The cultural cringe is cringier than ever!!

We absolutely must be “led by a president”. It’s always got to be the Walmart option.

Why can’t we develop a home grown idea of a “head of state” that reflects Australia’s uniqueness?

We should undertake a full reconciliation with indigenous Australians first.

From that we can develop constitutional arrangements that reflect Australia, including the role and title (preferably Aboriginal) of a Leader/Symbol of Country.

Before then, i guarantee, I’ll vote for the status quo against the imposition of another shallow imported uninspiring title.

Breaking News. Lidia Thorpe might not be the nicest person in Parliament.

There you go nath. Off your chest. Feel better.
But Mavis beat you in this endeavour. 🙂

I certainly did read that somewhere, and it fits in with her general pattern of behaviour.

I haven’t been able to find the source again, so haven’t repeated the allegation.

Have you read about the allegations against Wong, Kenneally and Gallagher re Kimberley Kitching? You don’t seem as bothered by those.

  14. “ Perhaps we should have a ‘mean girls’ Royal Commission. Let the friends of Kimberley Kitching have their say.”

    _____

I think that would be a great idea. They can regale us all with tales of how Kimberley would gaslight her colleagues to the LNP, journos, US spooks and the anti-chicomm establishment in Canberra. The evidence as to her involvement in the campaign of defamatory bullying of political ‘enemies’ like Les Twentyman would be a hoot; as would stories of just how her bestie and her .. acquired a union … and exactly what WAS her ‘executive’ role therein … as to why her bestie held her hand as she tragically expired, instead of attempting CPR … The highlight of any Royal commission would have to be cameos by her husband and Soli Lew, surely.

As to the ‘mena girls’ meme that the Labor phobic in the RWNJ nutter-sphere habitually drop onto the table like a dead cat (are you sure you are comfortable in occupying that space nath?) … well of course the Labor Leadership should have continued to nurse Saint Kimba to their breast, after all it was only every negative anti-Albo, ant-Labor story breaking in the MSM fore the previous three years that appeared to have HER involvement – half a step removed, of course (until even that charade was exposed by a Liberal Senator disclosing their text messages. Oops).

Royal Commission into a fucking wolverine? Bring. It. On!

That’s been done to death and exposed as the Coalition/News Corp Black Ops it so obviously was. To which point, if it were true there would have been a court case launched by now by her husband. There hasn’t been.

  18. For all you Optus Customers – I wonder if you are the first 10,000?

“Optus chief Kelly Bayer Rosmarin says the telco is “not the villain”, as a multi-agency investigation works overtime to find the hackers behind the data breach impacting nearly 10m Australians.

Her comments come as the Optus hacker on Tuesday morning released 10,000 customer records and threatened to keep releasing private data unless the teleco gives in to the ransom demand.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said Optus failed Australians, but the telco’s chief executive said the real villains are the hackers.

“We definitely know that this is the work of some bad actors, and really they are the villains in this sorry,” Ms Bayer Rosmarin told ABC Radio.

“Optus is doing absolutely everything possible to be transparent, to be on the front foot.

“I think most customers understand that we are not the villains, and we have not done anything deliberate to put any of our customers at risk.”

The hackers demanded $1m USD within the week, or else a tranche of 10,000 records will be released every day over the coming four days. ”

I wasn’t referring so much to evidence as I was to procedural fairness. This may come as a surprise to you, but people in conflict often have varying accounts of what transpired. If Thorpe is ‘an arrogant self interested fwarkwit’, as imacca described her, this per se is not a hanging offence; for it were, many a pollie would end up the proverbial creek absent an oar.

I did not realise that anyone hear was proposing hanging Thorpe, or indeed bringing any form of legal sanction against her.

I don’t think ‘procedural fairness’ applies here.

I expect, however, in the interests of consistency, to see your posts scattered with the word ‘allegedly’ from this day forward.

  24. nath

Incorrect. As someone who has been bullied, I am very concerned about this kind of behaviour.

I would suggest that – if you are also concerned about bullying – you do a bit of personal reflection about the way you treat other posters.

I did not know that Poland and Lithuania have a border with Russia. I had to look it up. Lots of history to that patch of Europe.

  27. Ms Thorpe would seem to be a classic Newscorp hate figure, so my first inclination was to take this latest allegation with a pinch of salt.

In this instance, Given that the source (9Fax) is more credible, together with other credible reports regarding Ms Thorp’s beliefs and actions, this particular accusation of bullying would seem more credible.

  30. Thorpe is finding out that politics is difficult. In no time at all she has identified herself as a wrecker, not a builder. So she is out there with Tony Abbott and Pauline Hanson.

The image of political wrecking reminded me of the nickname given to Kakuei Tanaka, The Bulldozer. But he was not a wrecker…what a career:
