Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor

Newspoll records another miserable result for the Coalition on voting intention, with a small amount of consolation for Scott Morrison on personal ratings.

The second Newspoll of the Scott Morrison era is no better for the Coalition than the first, with Labor maintaining its 56-44 lead. As reported in The Australian, both major parties are up a point on the primary vote, Labor to 42% and the Coalition to 34%. The minor party primary votes are still to come (UPDATE: Greens steady on 10%, One Nation down one to 6%). Newspoll skipped the personal ratings questions a fortnight ago, so its results this week are the first ever for Morrison, and the first in four weeks for Bill Shorten. Morrison is on 41% approval and 39% disapproval, while Shorten is up five on approval to 37% and down five on disapproval to 51%. However, Shorten has not replicated the 39-33 lead he recorded on preferred prime minister in the immediate wake of the leadership change, and now trails 42-36. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1653.

  1. Greens senator Rachel Siewert has introduced a bill to the Senate to raise the Newstart allowance by $75 a week:

More Virtue Signalling by The Greens in time for their next newsletter?

  2. Dutton claimed he had no more relationship with the guy than that they, along with five thousand plus others, had served in the police force together twenty years ago.

If the guy doesn’t even have to establish some kind of connection with Dutton, but can address him by his first name and assume he’ll know who he is, then he had a closer relationship than that, and Dutton is lying.

It doesn’t have to be a close relationship for this to be so, just one where the guy is more significant that the bulk of the five thousand others.

I have (through facebook) re established relationships with people I haven’t seen for thirty years. Most have been based on immediate and mutual recognition. Then there’s been others who’ve approached me who I didn’t remember at all – and their approaches showed that they knew that I wouldn’t, because they started with “You won’t remember me, but…”

Great moments in ABC journalism – the home page has a story titled “What happens when you hold in a fart?”

Just as well Michelle Guthrie guaranteed the ABC would never dumb-down under her leadership.

    Don’t apologise, it’s highly relevant.

It seems this is what the Potato has been trying to do with the au pairs! 🙂

Important water-cooler topic in offices around the country.

  6. The email to the Potato.

Just a note of caution: we have seen faked documents before.

Godwin Grech comes to mind. If you want to go further afield, the faked letters about Dubya’s military status brought down an entire television network and – most importantly – got Dubya completely off the hook in a situation where he was almost certainly guilty.

    Be careful.

Emails can be faked by either side in a dispute.

The attackers can fake an email to enhance their case. Equally, the defender can fake an email in the hope the attackers grab onto it and makes fools of themselves by relying on a fake email.

In the Dutton matter, Q has already mixed up his dates, cases and employment positions. This is after reports that he had taken weeks to consider his position and to consider the facts of the case. Yet he still stuffed it up.

As I said… just a note of caution here.

You don’t call him Peter if you’re not on familiar terms with a guy who is a Minister of the Crown.

Of course you do if you are asking for a favour.

No you don’t. Not if you only know him as a member of the same large group you both used to work for. Which is what Dutton is alleging and trying to palm off as his excuse for taking action for Keag.

Also, I can think of no logical reason why this email was singled out and actioned when thousands of others are not, in this way. Especially when Dutton made a point of emphasising that Keag did NOT have his personal email or phone number. Therefore, it would have looked like all the rest in the Department’s Inbox. If you believe Dutton’s explanation that it was action he took in the normal course of his job.

FWIW, I understand there is an ex Copper in Dutton’s employ. He handled this. Dutton would have acted on advice from his staff. Over egging this will only make Dutton more human.

  8. GG
Of course you do if you are asking for a favour.

And therein lies the disconnect between reality and Dutton’s version of it: who would ask a favour (and seriously and reasonably expect a successful response) of someone they barely knew 20 years ago?

Dutton is asking us to accept that he chose to intervene in a case, something he’s apparently only done 14 times, against departmental advice for a person with whom he has no personal connection.

Yeah, pull the other one mate.

Fake document doesn’t apply here seeing as Dutton released this!

  10. Another question rising from the email is that it doesn’t ask for intervention, it’s just asking for advice.

So, what other communications followed and when was a request for intervention made?

So, we have your opinion versus plausible denial.
Irrefutable evidence is required here, comrade

  12. Proving that the English speaking media loves to go with their own narrative and not the facts, I have been disappointed with the way the Swedish Elections have been covered. The supposedly surging Swedish Democrats managed to get 1.07 million votes, but the other parties got almost 5 million votes. They came third, not first the way the media is carrying on.

If the either of the two major alliances had a significant lead, the other alliance would have allowed them to govern in minority at least for a year or two to avoid giving any power to the Swedish Democrats. However, they are basically tied (the left side has a one seat lead), and that sort of agreement won’t happen.

Certainly what won’t happen is a deal with the Swedish Democrats from the Right as two the parties (Centre and Liberals) have both ruled that out and would be massacred next time if they back tracked on that.

So what might happen is a Grand Coalition type deal with either the Social Democrats handing over to the Right Alliance or the Social Democrats, Greens, Centre and Liberals come to some sort of deal. Either way, it is not like the neo-fascists are going to really be wielding power.

But if listened to any of the Australian, British or American news services that is what they imply.

  13. GG, I know you sometimes like to play devil’s advocate, but Dutton’s defence defies commonsense and any basic understanding of human behaviour.

  14. Ending long haul live sheep exports is a matter of strong personal conviction for me. That has not changed. Can I assure all who care deeply about this issue, I am working hard, with my colleagues and remain fully committed to seeing the end of this awful trade. @SHendersonMP— Sussan Ley (@sussanley) August 28, 2018

I too hold this strong personal conviction & will continue to work hard to phase out this #liveexport trade. Emanuel, with 70% of the trade, is now banned. The #MossReview initiated by @D_LittleproudMP will, I expect, unearth more serious concerns. #auspol @sussanley https://t.co/P60D58HS9u— Sarah Henderson MP (@SHendersonMP) August 28, 2018

I think the Potato is splitting hairs here.

I agree. I think Dutton is going to get caught out in a verbal trap of his own making.

  16. JD, I know you sometimes like to play gullible fool, but Dutton’s defence is commonsense and resonates with any basic understanding of human behaviour.

  17. @Cat and Princess Peg:

Peg: “Greens senator Rachel Siewert has introduced a bill to the Senate to raise the Newstart allowance by $75 a week”

Cat: “More Virtue Signalling by The Greens in time for their next newsletter?”

    Two problems for Labor:

    1. On its face, the $75 increase is hard for a social justice party to argue against; but

    2. As usual, wedge politics is at play: the Greens are hoping that Labor opposes the measure to shave support from labor to the Greens from the left, but the government is hoping Labor will support the measure so their droogs can dog whistle on 2GB and in the Murdoch tabloids and shave off support from labor from the centre.

It’s a pickle, but I think the answer is for Labor to firstly point out that such a bill can only properly originate in the Reps. I know that Labor – for good reasons wants a comprehensive inquiry into welfare payments upon assuming office, and this may affect the final rate that Newstart should be set.

However, and secondly, I think as a sign of good faith Labor should promise some immediate increase upon assuming office as a down payment – perhaps something between an extra $3 and $5 per day ($21 to $35 per week). Labor should not be afraid to argue that to either side of the obvious Lib-Green wedge that has been set up on this issue.

  18. How are the Greens introducing a money bill in the Senate and expecting it to get anywhere? Increasing Newstart would be a money bill.

  19. Re ar @5:37PM. “It’s important to differentiate first-order problems from second-order ones.”

Greens who attack Labor please note.

  20. GG – you typically resort to insults when you know you’re wrong and/or you have nothing of substance to say, so I’ll take that to the bank.

  21. Good evening all,

Labor did not go hard today at Dutton re the Au pair issue. A cursory question here and there but nothing of any great note.

To me that suggests one of two possibilities,

Labor has decided the Au pair issue is not going to deliver any great result as a attack line and perhaps more fertile ground lies in the direction of S44 or

something more and or bigger is on the way ( apart from the email released this evening ) and labor is being patient and holding back until that “something ” is made public and shoots Dutton and his defence statements right down.

Cheers and a great night to all.

  22. doyley,

Another possibility is that Labor see a real chance to take the Potato down so, they’re not going to make a major move until they’re sure they’ve got the numbers. 🙂

  23. Interesting to see the leading potential Lib candidate for Wentworth has pulled out, citing the need for more women in the Liberal partyroom. We were only talking about this yesterday.

  24. More on Ley and Henderson.

It seems like they sold their principles for a cabinet spot.

Also on their Private Members bill, I saw a reference earlier saying it had been dropped.

Sussan Ley and Sarah Henderson have released a joint statement on Labor’s attempt to have the live export ban bill the Senate passed debated in the house:

“Labor’s actions today were a disingenuous attempt to disrupt Parliament masquerading behind the cause of animal welfare.

As members of the ministry, it is no longer open to us to support any Private Member’s Bill or the Bill passed by the Senate today.

Our personal conviction on this issue remains and we will continue to advocate for a change in Coalition policy and for a phase out of this awful trade.

The Private Member’s Bill we introduced on 21 May 2018 to phase out long haul live sheep exports is currently being debated in the House of Representatives.

Combined with advocacy from many thousands of Australians, we are pleased our strong stand along with the Minister for Agriculture’s determination to hold the regulator to account, has resulted in the shutting down of the industry’s biggest offender. The impending release of the Moss Review provides the government with a further opportunity to impose tough new rules relating to live exports.”

  25. Thankfully, these hoodlums were not the African gangs we have been warned about by Murdoch organs!

“Two sons of a Melbourne QC have been charged over a vicious beating in East Melbourne after the Richmond-Hawthorn qualifying final on Thursday night.

Former Xavier College students Dominic Walker and his brother Sam Walker, now aged in their 20s, were arrested on Friday night along with another man. The trio were charged with intentionally causing injury and recklessly causing injury and bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court in December.

The Walker brothers are the sons of Tim Walker, QC, and grandsons of preeminent scientist and 2000 Australian of the Year Sir Gustav Nossal.

A spokesman for the family said they were not able to comment as the matter was still under police investigation.

“We have every confidence Victoria Police will obtain all relevant evidence, including all available CCTV footage,” he said.

“We ask the media to respect our family’s right to privacy.”

  26. Steve and Barney,

Labor has been on the attack re the au pairs for the past four weeks or so.

It was just obvious to me today that they were very quiet re this matter.

Why the back off ? It could be one or a number of reasons.

    We shall see.

Interesting to see the leading potential Lib candidate for Wentworth has pulled out, citing the need for more women in the Liberal partyroom. We were only talking about this yesterday.

So the only way to for a woman to gain pre-selection in the Liberal Party is to have no men in the race.

  28. Barney:

It’s precisely why they need quotas. The leading candidate had the backing of factional powerbrokers in the seat, so presumably if he’d remained in the contest he’d be preselected.

There are 3 women who have nominated and 5 other men.
