The second Newspoll of the Scott Morrison era is no better for the Coalition than the first, with Labor maintaining its 56-44 lead. As reported in The Australian, both major parties are up a point on the primary vote, Labor to 42% and the Coalition to 34%. The minor party primary votes are still to come (UPDATE: Greens steady on 10%, One Nation down one to 6%). Newspoll skipped the personal ratings questions a fortnight ago, so its results this week are the first ever for Morrison, and the first in four weeks for Bill Shorten. Morrison is on 41% approval and 39% disapproval, while Shorten is up five on approval to 37% and down five on disapproval to 51%. However, Shorten has not replicated the 39-33 lead he recorded on preferred prime minister in the immediate wake of the leadership change, and now trails 42-36. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1653.
Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor
Newspoll records another miserable result for the Coalition on voting intention, with a small amount of consolation for Scott Morrison on personal ratings.

And especially when their vote might make an actual difference in the outcome.
I seem to remember George Christensen (sp?) crossing the floor when the numbers obviously weren’t there, but he got cold feet when it looked like a similar vote might get carried.

After the failed Dutton putsch and Scummo slipping though on the inside rail to knock off Lucien there would be Yuge pressure on them all to make like the happiest most unified family in town.
It’s all good Simon. These misunderstandings happen. Some people are sensitive to things that to others are meaningless. Let’s forget about it and carry on.

Do it in two steps, please.
As long as Trump exists, I’m happy to accept the neoliberal Dems (and the sane, moderate Reps as well) as allies. Let’s all unite and get rid of Trump in spectacular fashion. We can sort out our more mundane political differences later, after he’s gone.
It’s important to differentiate first-order problems from second-order ones.

‘“Long time between calls” – the email from Russell Keag to Peter Dutton just tabled. So they had spoken previously? Not a complete nobody to the home affairs minister? ‘
Not consistent with the what the Minister told Parliament at all, at all.
Quad is on his Bike…
The Australian is being drop copied details of decisions made by Labor ministers. I would bet the house on leaking such data being a crime under one of the numerous bits of security legislation enacted under the Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison Circus.

Also, the Keag email, doesn’t say – Hey, you might not remember me – we worked in the Qld Police together 20 years ago. I know we haven’t been in touch since, but could you help out an old mate from back in the day?

maybe, maybe not.
Dutton said he hadn’t spoken to Keag since he left the Police force.
So, 20 years is a very long time.
This needs more substantive evidence than what has been produced to date.

The informal language used in the email suggests it is being written to someone who is or was well known to the author.
Time is irrelevant.

I had thought that Dutton had denied knowing Keag.
He did. He denied that he had a personal connection to the person that had made the request for intervention. This email does seem to contradict that.

Am very much on adjournment debate watch tonight and during this sitting period. If any of these Liberal MPs are going to name names regarding the events leading up to the leadership spill, it is during the adjournment debate this is most likely to take place. We shall see what happens!

“I don’t know if you remember me, but we met a couple of times when I was working at X and you were based at Y….” is the sort of way you address someone who you had a slight acquaintance with back in the day.
“Long time between calls’ is when you’re mates who haven’t caught up in a while.
There are people I worked with twenty years ago who I haven’t had any contact with since who I would do a favour for without any hesitation, however.

I think the Potato is splitting hairs here.
It seems he is saying as the relationship was formed in a work environment it wasn’t a personal one.
So, anyone out there who has married someone they met at work, according to the Potato you do not have a personal relationship with your spouse!! 🙂

Anyone who calls out neo-liberalism’s failures is no ‘dumbass’ in my book.
You know what I think is cray cray in Murdochland? They think that if they don’t mention that Newspoll was 56-44 to Labor and simply focus on the PPM number, that people will draw the incorrect, but favourable to the Coalition, conclusion that the Coalition are popular, more popular than they actually are.

No you don’t. Not if you only know him as a member of the same large group you both used to work for. Which is what Dutton is alleging and trying to palm off as his excuse for taking action for Keag.
Also, I can think of no logical reason why this email was singled out and actioned when thousands of others are not, in this way. Especially when Dutton made a point of emphasising that Keag did NOT have his personal email or phone number. Therefore, it would have looked like all the rest in the Department’s Inbox. If you believe Dutton’s explanation that it was action he took in the normal course of his job.
