Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

A tumble in Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings fails to carry through to two-party preferred, as the Greens record their best result in almost a year.

The Australian brings us what is apparently the first ever Newspoll conducted over the Easter break, presumably portending weekly polling throughout the campaign. In what can only be a morale-booster for Labor after the troubled first week of its campaign, it records no change on two-party preferred, with Labor maintaining a lead of 53-47. Both major parties are down a point on the primary vote, Labor to 36% and the Coalition to 35%. The Greens are up two points to 12%, their best result since May last year, with One Nation and the United Australia Party both on 4%, respectively up one and steady.

The strains of the first week have shown on Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings, his approval rating down five to 37% and disapproval up six to 51%. Scott Morrison is respectively up one to 43% and down two to 52%, and his lead as preferred prime minister is out from 44-39 to 44-37. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1510.

  1. I do think the dr Jim / Albo tandem will ultimately hurt Albo.

The understudy always look good in those scenarios because they don’t have the same pressure.

  2. Re retirees:

There are those who mainly or totally rely on the old age pension and there are those who mainly or entirely rely on private pensions, assets and savings for income.

Those who mainly rely on the old age pension are going to be more scared by the Indue card because they have little or nothing to leave their kids any way. Many of these people vote Coalition because they are innately conservative, even though voting for them is against their interest.

Those who mainly rely on their own (often very substantial) assets and investments are not affected by the Indue card but their estates would be affected by a ‘death tax’. Most of these people vote Liberal/National.

Two scare campaigns with two quite different targets. But Labor has a lot more to gain from its one.

    Suck it up Coalition.

  4. I note Morrison ran with a smear of Chalmers, calling him “Sneaky Jim”. Wonder if the focus groups have picked him up as a positive so the PM is trying to tear him down.

Sneaky Jim isn’t that catchy as a nickname, and he doesn’t give off an air of sneakiness in my view.

  5. The great weakness of Uhlmann, Speers, Crowe etc and the rest of Morrison’s cheer squad is their abject ignorance of the ALP. They all believed, and still profess to believe without much qualification, that Scotty will swindle another election…

…but what’s not widely understood, least of all by themselves, is that their opinion is based almost in total on ALP internal chatter (most ALP members and operatives have been bagging Albo as unelectable from the day he became leader, despite his solid record and undeniable Everyman appeal, which is what counts at the moment).

Uhlmann & Co take ALP chatter/nervousness (some malicious, some not) as proof he can’t win (“if they don’t like him, neither will voters”).

Absolute rubbish, of course, as all reputable polling (and any conversation you have with any punter on the street) shows – Morrison is toxic, even to lifelong Liberal voters….yet the LNP media cheer squad bake this contorted logic into all their idiotic ravings.

Just look to Kevin Rudd as a Labor leader who unfairly I believe was not really respected within “important” ALP circles – yet who nonetheless won over the public and pulled off a crushing election win, which is what is happening now with Albo

  6. Here are the facts about Labor leadership:

If Labor wins, Albanese will be a hero. After 2010 Albanese will have to run naked down George Street with an axe dripping with blood for him not to be given a chance to lead Labor to the subsequent election.

If Labor loses, he won’t get another chance. But every person on the Labor side will be mindful of the old aphorism that the worst day in Government is better than the best day in Opposition and will be working their hearts out for Labor to win and Albanese to be PM.

  7. Doesn’t Essential only really go public with a Guardian article early in the morning?

The full details are released on the Essential website at lunchtime.

I don’t think we will see Essential poll results tonight.

Don’t be silly.Liberals embarrassed is a contradiction in terms 😉

  9. On one issue alone, it’s clear that Morrison’s unfit for public office, let alone the highest political office in the land. And that issue is his endorsement of the Tory candidate for Warringah. He’s the father of two girls. What would be his attitude if one of them were to be conflicted by their gender? And as if a transgender hasn’t enough problems, without the almost express seal of approval by him that they’re less than human. Only a proper prick would make political hay of another’s dilemma. He has to go!

  10. Yes, it’s interesting to speculate that with all that is going wrong within the Coalition campaign, most journalists still pick them to win.

It’s sort of stupid Trumpy talk, and yes, without any background to it. And anyway, it’s not even a word ‘we’ use that much – the word he was probably looking for was dodgy, but again, with no hook to hang it on, Morrison just comes off as a complete tosser. Again.

I reckon scare campaign is absolutely fair game for Labor – let’s see how well they execute.

5 weeks out – seems like poor timing – could backfire on Albo?

    —-

The ALP should work on scaring the shit out of old people.
They should talk about the indue card, age care deaths due to covid, and how everyone things they are a liar.
The arc could be “They are coming for you regardless of what they say”
5 weeks out is a bit of a risk, they really should have started 6 months ago with a traveling senate committee like Tim Wilson did about franking credits.

  14. Morrison’s hysterics and moth frothing over the Universal Card “scare” campaign gets the campaign’s daily Streisand Gold Stamp. Anyone who wasn’t up to scratch on what Ruston said sure is up on it now, and being a common certified international liar isn’t helping in the potesteth too much stakes either.

Mission accomplished on this one team.

As I was saying, Wipe Out.

  15. If Morrison does this to his former liberal party leader and prime minister

August 22, 2018. During leadership questions in a press conference Scott Morrison hugs the Prime Minister and says that he’s ambitious for Turnbull.

How can Australians trust Morrison and his cronies about anything they deny about the Indue welfare debitcard

Isn’t it rather unstatesmanlike for the PM to be engaging in petty name calling? Where’s the grubby bagman the Liberals normally appoint to engage in such tactics during a campaign, thereby leaving the leader free to rise above it all?

  17. “Mediscare”. The term invented by the media within hours of its debut in 2016. They cling to this term like rats to a piece of floating wood. They trot the term out to cover for their near total lack of concern for any & all coalition scares.

  18. And Channel 9 news in Perth just could not bring themselves to show the 53-47 TPP figure…We had the PV for both, the leader up/down thing but just too hard to admit that 53-47 number…..The West could not do it this morning, Nine’s Pachi could not go it on radio, and the TV news flubbed out as well…
Talk about lack of integrity….and gutlessness….
And now, the talk also shifted on this bulletin to “possiblity of a hung parliament…..” stuff…..No wonder many of us hold some of the mainstream media in contempt…..

And meanwhile, Albo looks more and more the statesman. Our Man in Canberra.

  20. I see Ben Morton’s office is sending out postal vote applications in look alike AEC envelopes asking for the applications to be directed to non AEC addresses.

    Slimy.

  21. Anybody want to take one for the team and watch this freak show?

And tonight 8pm – Clive Palmer VS Pauline Hanson VS Bob Katter VS Campbell Newman live all together in one room! Their battle for QLD live from the Gold Coast – again on @SkyNewsAust @PMOnAir

  22. Oh, and shots of Morrison with the Party Faithful today in Perth was not a good visual….Every single one of them had a mask on (good) with the Oz flag on it (totally phoney) and nobody could see their faces or work out who they were (good)…
They dutifully waved a blue bit of cardboard with the word “economy” on it or something similar, but the vibe was as sparkling as a bottle of beer opened two days ago……

  23. So Andrew Probyn continuous with his unprofessional standard.

Tonight runs trough News Poll only mentioning slide in primary vote, segue to dissatisfied voters not having policy put before them & complains about lack of truth disinformation… ALL of these are within journalists prerogative to address, instead they are the designators of the disinformation, too lazy & too easy to trivialise the election

    _______________
you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy

  25. Gee, to watch that lot in Queensland you would need to load up with some stiff whiskeys to cope with that menagerie of losers, misfits and shonks………Still, that’s democracy for you………

  26. All this talk of Larry Anthony. At his first tilt at the family dynastic home Richmond, everyone said he was a walk in.

Sitting ALP MP, Neville Newell, was a oncer and wouldn’t keep the ALPs most marginal seat in the 1993 election. Anthony was a shoe in.

On election night, Newell not only kept the seat but had a decent swing to him.

The Monday after, the Tweed Daily News carried the headline on the front page with picture Newell Captioned “Neville Newell- As Happy as Larry”.

  27. “Sneaky Jim”. Even Trump would discard it as unworthy. It’s not rooted in any wider public perception, which is necessary if it’s to resonate.

And for Morrison to be name-calling when his personal traits are so widely despised is, frankly, crazy. He’s just inviting punters to chuck something at the TV.

He’s getting very shouty. And I’m surprised he’s digging in over Deves. Thankfully Matt Kean isn’t backing away from her, at least there’s someone in the Liberal party who thinks she is appalling.

    Neighbourly bugs:
Sorry to disagree with Cat@ (as I rarely do), but I would strongly recommend not entering the neighbour’s property to seek the cause. 1. Inexperts will not find any of the possible causative arthropods, even if present; 2. You will be the non-medically / non-psychiatric trained audience for ever greater complaints, for a long time. Been there, done that. A sympathetic ear across a fence is best.
I could recount the matchboxes sent as containing evidence of the cause, containing scabs, pubic hair, dandruff, spiders’ webs, vacuum cleaner debris and worse (but never a culprit) but this is not the place.

Agreed. I went through this for a few years with a close relative – they are doing very well now thank goodness.

The medical people may be able to comment, but apparently these people do seem to fell genuinely itchy / skin crawling, and are trying to rationalise the problem.

Zoom, do you know if your neighbour has family / friends? Or any sort of support visitor? It is not a situation you want to get directly involved in, except as a friendly (and non-contradictory) ear.

  31. Mediscare was absolutely real and is happening.

That the media can’t (or won’t) realise that the Coalition is eating the pig one leg at a time rather than slaughtering it outright doesn’t mean the pig is not going to be dead at the end of the process.

For a bunch of supposedly smart people, the blatantly obvious seems to slip by them awfully often.

  32. So even Probyn is ignoring the TPP then? Gee, we miss him in Perth….not. I bet if it swings a bit the other way it will be headline material…if it comes to that…..

  33. Postal vote applications going via party processing has been a thing for many elections.

It most definitely sucks and everyone except the major parties thinks it should stop.

It’s mostly harmless, but it does facilitate data harvesting by the parties, and it does look sus, inherently making anyone who becomes aware of it more suspicious of the integrity of our elections.

It should stop, and I wish Labor at least would just bite the bullet and make it illegal when they get the chance. I suspect the same geniuses in the ALP who wanted to die in a ditch to keep GTV will insist on keeping it.

BB, yes the money is the LNPs to do with what they will, not some pensioner or dole bludger. Heaven forbid a poor person would be allowed the dignity of managing their own finances, thats only for the overlords. Maybe the LNP could even ensure that the card is only used at the premises of LNP donors and close the circle. This sort of superiority and lack of caring is at the heart of every tory, moderate or hard right .

A prime example of what can happen to Pensioners given a chance is the Aged care policy operated by Private operators. That legislation was implemented by Howard government and we are seeing the consequences of it especially during Pandemic.

  37. PK on RN morning breakfast did not once mention the Newspoll TPP, am almost certain. Heard the whole show. It was beyond belief.

I am wary of the “bias” theory. I think it boils down to the fact that inconvenient facts that don’t fit the “narrative” are jettisoned. For PK, it was all too hard to acknowledge that Labor’s “terrible” week hadn’t moved the TPP a jot. Very unprofessional.

  38. Being a devotee of US politics, the trend towards opinionista led 24/7 RWNJ media – think FoxNews, Aon, NewsMax – these sewer outlets basically have a problem.

Content. How do you keep the hackles raised and the outrage high? There is only so much owning on the liberals and ‘Sleepy Joe Biden’ you can do. And the old favourites of Hilary’s emails and Hunter Biden’s laptop can only sustain for so long. We need another angle.

Enter culture wars, and it’s step sister, identity politics. Lots could be said here, but 1 word will do.

    TransGender.

It may well keep the eyeballs glued in the ‘Land of the Free’, but the junior woodchucks sent down under to work on the Liberal campaign have convinced enough – including the idiot ScoMo – that this is an issue Aussies care about. Hence we have Katherine Deves, with Morrison’s imprimatur.

It’s true, transgender may fill hours of talkback on 2GB, and in RWNJ online forums – but does it play in Parramatta? We are about to find out…

  39. Even Andrew Bolt is saying Albo’s had a great day and has got his mojo back. He also said that if Albo puts in a good performance in the debate tomorrow the Libs could be in real trouble.

This is the same bloke who was doing handstands only last week and saying that Labor’s campaign had completely collapsed. Now he is saying the Newspoll figures are showing that it didn’t damage Albo very much at all. No trace of any gloating now and good to see. Well done Albo.
