Newspoll: 52-48 to Coalition

A middlingly good reaction to the budget according to Newspoll, which does not record significant changes on voting intention or leadership approval from three weeks ago.

The latest Newspoll in The Australian has the Coalition leading 52-48, out from 51-49 last time, from primary votes of Coalition 44% (up one), Labor 34% (steady), Greens 11% (down one) and One Nation 3% (steady). Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are unchanged at 65% approval and 31% disapproval, while Anthony Albanese is steady on 39% approval and up three on disapproval to 43%. Morrison’s lead on preferred prime minister nonetheless narrows slightly, from 59-27 to 57-28.

The poll shows a broadly favourable response to the budget, which is rated good for the economy by 42% and bad by 20%, compared with 44% and 18% last year – although a lot more of the favourable response is merely quite good (35% compared with 29% last year) rather than extremely good (7% compared with 15%). Twenty-six per cent expect it will make them better off financially compared with 23% for worse off and 51% for uncommitted, which is less strong than last year (34% better off and 19% worse off) but fairly strong by historical standards.

Troublingly for Labor, 54% expressed more trust in “a Coalition government led by Scott Morrison” to “guide Australia’s recovery” compared with 32% for “a Labor government led by Anthony Albanese”, and only 33% felt Labor would have done a better job on the budget compared with 49% for a worse job. This compares with 37% and 45% last year and is their weakest net result since the Coalition came to power in 2013, although it’s within the error margin of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1527.

  1. Might be relevant to some here….

    From the SMH:

“Associate Professor Suzanne Snodgrass, of the University of Newcastle, co-authored a 2018 study that found 80 per cent of computer workers reported musculoskeletal discomfort in the previous year, most commonly in the neck, shoulders or lower back.

She is now recruiting participants for a study investigating how this year’s mass shift to working from home is affecting our bodies (you can complete the survey here). So far about 90 per cent of respondents have experienced musculoskeletal pain.”

  2. For whenMaguire inevitably faces the judge – 2 defences tried by Obeid that failed (heavily interpreted)
    1. While integrity in politicians is generally a good thing, there is nothing in the law or the job description that says an MP can’t wet his beak.
    2. In such cases MPs can’t be tried by normal courts but should be tried by their peers (like Kind Hearts and Coronets)

  3. Yep, we laughed at the sheep video too. Awful people are we. Bet he’s in pot now.

Also laughed at Morrison’s phone call with his best buddy, Donald, who probably wanted some sleazy ideas on how to steal the election.

It benefits his second BF, Brian of Hillsong fame, to have Donald in the White House .
I’m getting so snarky in my dotage. Badly need the RWers to lose everywhere before I depart this mortal coil.

There is a small poll in the Fairfax coverage of the Qld election that suggests Scomo visiting Qld has done the LNP vote about as much good as Bob Brown visiting Qld in 2019 did the Greens vote.
    https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/politics/queensland/poll-call-day-8-donations-in-the-spotlight-as-electorate-fractures-20201013-p564j8.html#p51c0e

FWIW, around here often pointless considering some folks fantastical perceptions.

The Qld Greens actually had a 1.5% increased Fed vote in 2019 with the Adani campaign being high profile, and polls suggest it will be even stronger in a couple of weeks in Qld.

Looked like Q and A were trying very hard to boost Albo to me, and even the self-professed Labor voters seemed to be willing him to say or do something to indicate how he could lead. Can’t say it seemed like he would’ve fired up many with that. Same sort of equivocation and not answering the question on fracking and growing gas or coal production. Feigning disbelief that the ALP gets fossil fuel money in donations and that has had influence on policy seemed pretty disingenuous. As evidenced by the ongoing Obeid sagas, the NSW ALP had been up to their armpits in the creation of exploration licenses and promotion of coal and gas in NSW, even for private benefit. Which has been fought in many rural and regional communities for two decades or so.

Albo seemed to totally squib it with fracking and gas and apparently is waiting until the rest of the world gets past the next COP talks in Glasgow to have a plan or target. Like WTF?
Just say or do nothing for ourselves until we see which way the wind is blowing internationally at the end of next year?
Won’t have any ambitions or ideas to push for what Australia should do or take to the COP talks?
Nothing to put up as an opposition, just cowed to follow the government position, because Murdoch?
Just waiting around to see what others do, or do not?

Are we not a capable enough nation to think and act for ourselves on transforming from a fossil fueled society to a renewable and more sustainable one, whatever the rest of the world is doing. With benefit not only ecological and social but apparently economic as well.

Heard what I though might be an apocryphal Einstein quote the other day that made me think of some party’s attitude, don’t do or say anything to upset the way things are. Seems a legit quote.

“The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

  5. “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

One could apply that quotable quote to The Greens, quite easily. They are simply incapable of doing anything about the dangers to the world they profess to care so much about as a result of their political ineffectiveness. 🙂

Wow….. Kevin Rudd’s petition for a RC into Murdoch’s influence is now over 203,000!,

Under our poor excuse for a Parliament, it could get 20 million signatures and Parliament doesn’t even have to debate the issue much less actually appoint a RC.

  8. Rudd’s crusade is so much pissing in to the wind.

Sure, there is zero chance of a RC or any actual action taken with respect of the Murdoch infested media landscape here. The petition, at a surface level, is clearly pointless.

But having a little flurry of publicity about how dire Murdoch’s organs are and getting some people talking about whether they should be supporting those particular outlets seems like it can only be a good thing. Shake up a few of the apathetic into changing some of their media and entertainment purchasing habits and it could loosen Rupert’s baleful influence on our polity just a touch.

I don’t have a lot of time for Rudd, but good on him for giving this very worthy cause a decent push.

  9. The best thing about Rudd’s poll, and the APH web server issues (don’t ask) is that it is a constant reminder about what an arsehole Rupert Murdoch is.

    Drip, Drip, Drip.

It’s so much 1974 Pinball Wizard stuff imho.

  11. The unfortunate worker who was killed at the Curtin University was an apprentice employed on site. No doubt his wages were hastily subsidized by the Federal Government apprentice employment scheme in an attempt to boost economic recovery. What occupational health and safety precautions and training did Morrison insist on as a pre-condition for eligibility to access the scheme by employers?

When will the MSM be calling for Morrison to take complete responsibility for this death?

  12. Watching a fair bit of USA MSM, they have a different perspective to us.

FoxNews/Murdoch blowing smoke up Dotard’s arse.

CNN/MSNBC pouring bucketloads of crap on Dotard.

ABC, NBC, CBS, playing it down the middle.

NPR playing to the extreme Left.

Little wonder that Biden’s average 10 point lead ain’t shifting.

And what do we have here?

Murdoch, Costello/Fax, Stokes all rootin’ for LNP

    Ten/CBS down the middle.

ABC compromised with a bevvy of YoungLibs infesting every nook and cranny.

  13. George Christensen and Craig Kelly have teamed up to send a medically misleading letter to Queensland voters (I mean, like you look to those two clowns for your medical advice):

    Seano
    @SeanBradbery
Craig Kelly and George Christensen…yeah I’m getting my health advice from a used furniture salesman and a bloke who’s apparently spent more time in Manilla dive bars than chlamydia…

    😆

  14. “Hate to admit it. But, Lars is right this time.

Rudd’s crusade is so much pissing in to the wind.”

Of course this is correct. But it’s really getting under their skin and people are certainly noticing. People are in the main not jumping on boards News’ anti Andrews campaign and they aren’t getting behind the save Gladys campaign either. The screaming headlines and the spittle flecked late night Sky microphones aren’t going anywhere. In reality, the only thing going for them is anti immigrant racism. You know they’re worried about something when they re-boot those campaigns. Expect one soon.

The same people who notice every time. It’s a preach to the choir of disaffected lefties.

I think you’re right Roy, but it’s going to be hard squawking “Open the borders – and stand by to repel them” – even for the Murdorc-assisted Scum from Spiv Marketing Inc.

  17. None of the criticisms of Berejiklian that I have heard so far have addressed her status as an unrepentant taker of another woman’s husband.

  18. Rudd’s petition also (drip by dripping drip, thank you sprocket) weakens the attack on Andrews, by distracting attention and undermining the counter-Andrews message. For that alone, if you think Andrews is doing a good job, it should be cheered on.

Regarding how one might repel attractive borders though, that’s not too hard. We already know there is “legitimate” (or some other adjective) travel as well as “illegal” (or similar) traffic.

  19. I don’t have a lot of time for Rudd, but good on him for giving this very worthy cause a decent push.

    I agree with this.
At least he’s doing something. I suppose it’s better than posting on a blog like I just did.

  20. Always believed you can see the future by looking at engineering adverts. You can’t build stuff without engineers. There is currently serious national and international competition for engineers that know how to connect renewables to the Grid.

  21. Sprocket

“ NPR playing to the extreme Left.”

I don’t think this is right.

NewsRadio should play more of this than the BBC which is as boring as.

  22. Sounds like Hadley is in the “Kick out Gladys” camp. Part of his ranting this morning was played on Canberra redneck radio 2CC
