Newspoll: 52-48 to Coalition

A middlingly good reaction to the budget according to Newspoll, which does not record significant changes on voting intention or leadership approval from three weeks ago.

The latest Newspoll in The Australian has the Coalition leading 52-48, out from 51-49 last time, from primary votes of Coalition 44% (up one), Labor 34% (steady), Greens 11% (down one) and One Nation 3% (steady). Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are unchanged at 65% approval and 31% disapproval, while Anthony Albanese is steady on 39% approval and up three on disapproval to 43%. Morrison’s lead on preferred prime minister nonetheless narrows slightly, from 59-27 to 57-28.

The poll shows a broadly favourable response to the budget, which is rated good for the economy by 42% and bad by 20%, compared with 44% and 18% last year – although a lot more of the favourable response is merely quite good (35% compared with 29% last year) rather than extremely good (7% compared with 15%). Twenty-six per cent expect it will make them better off financially compared with 23% for worse off and 51% for uncommitted, which is less strong than last year (34% better off and 19% worse off) but fairly strong by historical standards.

Troublingly for Labor, 54% expressed more trust in “a Coalition government led by Scott Morrison” to “guide Australia’s recovery” compared with 32% for “a Labor government led by Anthony Albanese”, and only 33% felt Labor would have done a better job on the budget compared with 49% for a worse job. This compares with 37% and 45% last year and is their weakest net result since the Coalition came to power in 2013, although it’s within the error margin of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1527.

The West Australian understands at least one person is dead, one person is critical and several people are injured following the incident in Bentley. A WA Police spokeswoman said the collapsed building was believed to be under construction.

It is understood a glass ceiling has collapsed at the construction site in the new area of the campus. A construction vehicle is thought to have been crushed as a result.

One person is believed to be dead after a building collapsed at Curtin University on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the Bentley campus at 12.30pm following reports of people trapped by the collapse.

St John Ambulance confirmed there were multiple injuries. A police spokeswoman said the building which collapsed was under construction.

Construction on the five-storey facility began recently.

  3. Re Albo’s performance on Q&A last night, I thought he was excellent. Unflustered, humorous and to the point answering all questions. Most comments (apart from a few trolls) were positive. 9 out of 10 I reckon

And geez…. wasn’t Hamish all offended and sensitive about the term “The Morrison Recession”?

So far that makes Hamish and Leigh Sales from the ABC to have a go at Albo over this. Someone from PMO must be whispering sweet nothings in their ears. Means it bites of course.

For mine, if Morrison and his surrogates can blame state Premier Dan Andrews as scapegoat for the whole sorry mess the Australian national economy is in – plus throw in all the deaths in nursing homes – it’s fair enough to lob a few hand grenades back over into the LNP trenches in return.

  4. BB,

Perhaps we haven’t seen the Morrison Recession yet. Perhaps the data so far is for the COVID recession.

Perhaps the Morrison Recession is the one that started when the geniuses in govt pinched off the money supply and threw low-paid and unemployed to the wolves. That is happening now, but the data won’t reveal it until later.

Matt Canavan just told us the BLM marches were responsible for outbreaks in Victoria.

    They’re still pedalling these lies.

  6. The Nine Network has lost its bid to reduce a $3.6m damages payout to a wealthy Queensland family defamed in a report about the fatal Grantham floods in 2011.

The Toowoomba-based Wagner brothers were defamed by a 60 Minutes report from May 2015 that incorrectly insinuated they were responsible for the destruction of the town and deaths of 12 people.

They argued the report insinuated the collapse of a wall at a Lockyer Valley quarry they owned caused the “man-made catastrophe”.

The report, entitled The Missing Hour, described the wall of water that fatally swept through Grantham as an “inland tsunami”.

The report did not expressly blame the four Wagner brothers for the deaths, but the family believes it led people to believe they caused the disaster, sought to cover it up and refused to answer to the public.

Nine’s lawyer, Sandy Dawson SC, argued Justice Peter Applegarth erred when he calculated the payout to the brothers and his client should pay a much lower figure.

He said the judge had treated the 60 Minutes broadcast and journalist Nick Cater’s words as two different publications of the same defamatory material.

  7. The basic point Albo was trying to make (despite constant interruptions from Hamish) is that Morrison takes credit for anything that goes well – whether it’s down to him, or not.

He ALWAYS blames someone else when things go wrong.

So, fair enough to label it “The Morrison Recession”. It happened during his watch. It happened DESPITE him dishonestly, insultingly and condescendingly telling us that we were “Back in Black” a year before it was supposed to happen. He was prepared to take credit for something that hadn’t yet happened, and didn’t happen in fact.

Seems to me that if you can take credit for something that hasn’t happened on your watch, you can cop the blame for something that DID happen EXACTLY on your watch.

I used to think Morrison was closer to the “Daggy Dad” model that he puts around (cf. cubby houses, chook sheds etc.). But really? He’s a nasty, secretive, devious spiv, in it for what he and his mates can get out of it. He can’t just take all the credit and sheet-off all the blame to others.

Time to man-up Scomo. If you want to throw stones, do it outside, not in the glass house.

  8. “I take it that Hamish tested Albanese on a few issues …?”

Not even remotely close. Must have interrupted over 100 times. Had the bejeezus ratioed out of him on Twitter and if anyone thinks MacDonald didn’t notice the treatment (deserved) he got then they are delusional.

Albanese was quite strong though not perfect by any means – even when responding the obvious plant in the studio audience. “I am a Labor voter but I cannot vote for someone who refers to the Morrison recession”. Most would recognise the type though maybe not you.

  9. Hamish acted like a dick, it was not about drawing out Albanese’s views. Could not care less what Hamish’s view is on pretty much everything.

Hamish hasn’t watched sky after dark and wants to defend it, oh come on.

    Just another loud mouth journalist.

I had no problem signing it just now, so must be getting easier.

We were in the Morrison recession before Covid. We will be in it again after Covid.

    Scott Morrison:

“I Just got off the phone with Donald Trump. We had a very constructive discussion on our health responses to #COVID19 & the need to get market-led business economies up & running again.”

    Imagine the conversation.
Morrison: We must open our borders soon.
Trump: I’m fit and ready to go. We have beaten the virus.

    Sheeeez!

  13. Bragging about talking to Donald Trump on the phone is just about the last thing ANY politician ANYWHERE would want to do… especially if the subject is: “A sensible strategy for dealing with COVID-19”.

Morrison just can’t help big-noting himself. In this case, a complete waste of time.

I didn’t watch it. The requirement to give time to ideological extremists just repels me. I can imagine there are ‘obvious plants’ in the audience. Not surprising.

  18. Rex,

You can get it for free on the Cricket Australia site, and watch it in your office at work….

To be fair on Silk, they were playing for a draw all day.

Seeing as his PA has already rediscovered the hard drives and helpfully provided them to the ICAC and it isn’t that difficult for the phone info to be re-produced, I reckon it’s only a matter of time till he starts singing the song of looking for redemption.

doing nothing to help get them home. The govt changed the rules and these people are being unfairly punished.

    Can’t they get anything right?

  22. Morrison Recession.

It looses punch as a portmanteau (since he is Morrison, not Morris) and also just sounds bad.

Highest score 8 seasons ago. Surely Tassie can do better than that

Well, I haven’t laughed that hard since I read Mariah Carey charged James Packer an “inconvenience fee” after their break-up.

Does that make me worse than you?

In the 1995/96 Shield final Jamie Siddons faced 134 balls for 4 runs. Tim May made a 52 ball duck.
    Needs must.
