Newspoll and Essential Research coronavirus polling

Among many other findings relating to COVID-19, the strongest evidence yet that Victorians are unswayed by news media narratives concerning their state government.

The Australian today reports Newspoll findings on COVID-19 and leadership approval from Victoria and Queensland, which were targeted with expanded samples (608 and 603 respectively) in the poll whose main results were published yesterday:

• Daniel Andrews is up five points on approval from late July to 62% and down two on approval to 35%, whereas Scott Morrison is down six on approval to 62% and up seven on disapproval to 33%. Andrews is reckoned to be doing very well in handling COVID-19 by 31% (up four), fairly well by 31% (down three), fairly badly by 13% (down five) and very badly by 22% (up four), while Morrison is on 26% for very well (down five), 45% for fairly well (down one), 15% for fairly badly (up three) and 10% for very badly (up one).

• Annastacia Palaszczuk’s ratings are only modestly changed, with approval down one to 63% and disapproval up four to 33% as compared with the poll in late July, while Scott Morrison is down five to 67% and up four to 28% as compared with the poll in late June. Both leaders’ COVID-19 ratings are a little weaker than they were in late July: Palaszczuk records 32% for very well (down five), 36% for fairly well (down eight), 16% for fairly badly (up eight) and 13% for very badly (up seven), while Morrison has 34% for very well (down six), 43% for fairly well (up three), 13% for fairly badly (up two) and 7% for very badly (up one).

• The national sample was asked about the restrictions in Victoria and Queensland, which naturally required lengthy explanation (the framing of which seems reasonable enough). For Victoria, the results were 25% too strict, 61% about right and 10% too lenient; for Queensland, 37% too strict, 53% about right and 7% too lenient.

• The balance of concern is nonetheless moving away from “moving too quickly to relax restrictions”, down 20 points since mid-July to 56%, to “moving too slowly to relax restrictions and harming economy, jobs and mental wellbeing”, up 19 points to 39%.

Today also brings the fortnightly Essential Research poll, as related by The Guardian with the full report to follow later today:

• Respondents were in favour of both Scott Morrison’s handling of COVID-19 (a 61% approval rating, up two on a fortnight ago) and Queensland state border closures he wants lifted (66% support, including 70% among Queensland respondents). Forty-seven per cent of Victorian respondents approved of the state government’s COVID-19 management, unchanged from a fortnight ago, while the rating for the New South Wales government was up seven to 67%.

• Thirty-three per cent of respondents felt tax cuts for high income earners should be brought forward from 2022, as the government has signalled it will do, while 38% believe they should be scrapped and 29% believe the government should stick to the original timetable. Twenty-one per cent believe they would be an effective economic stimulus, compared with 41% for moderately effective and 38% for not effective.

• Asked which technology they preferred for future energy generation, 70% favoured renewables and 15% gas and coal.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1081.

I really can’t see four GOP senators abstain from voting or to vote against Trump’s pick of the next SCOTUS associate justice, certainly not Romney, who would most likely delight in the elevation of Amy Coney Barrett, and which would result in six of the court’s nine members being Catholics, all six of whom would be pro-lifers, opposed to the decision in Roe v. Wade. That said, if the Court was to overturn Roe v Wade, there will be a massive backlash, creating even deeper divisions in an already very polarised society. McConnell did not only end the filibuster in the Senate; he also reduced the numbers from 60 to 51 to confirm the appointment of a Supreme Court justice. Biden could appoint, say, another 4 justices but this didn’t go down well when FDR tried it. He could also impose a compulsory retirement age and/or reduce the term of a justice, but this could only be imposed on new appointments. Then there’s the argument that McConnell could be impeached though this I think would be unlikely. I think the US is in for a torrid time, even if Biden’s elected, the Dems remain in control of the House and win the Senate. It’s fortunate that the US doesn’t have a gun culture.

So fibre’s best after all? But it’s still a discriminatory policy.

More than 700,000 businesses will be eligible for free upgrades to the government’s high-speed gigabit fibre broadband, to be rolled out in 240 business fibre zones across Australia. That includes 85 zones in regional Australia.

The measure will be announced today at Port Macquarie and is part of NBN Co’s business fibre initiative, a $700m package for small to medium business to access superfast connection speeds.

The government’s plan involves defining areas to be serviced around Australia as zones where fibre optic connections can be built into business premises. [etc]

This is just another episode of regional rorts. Upgrades to Fraudband were always going to be determined on a political basis. Businesses in the ‘right’ electorates will undoubtedly fare better than those elsewhere.

The whiteboards and spreadsheets will be given a good workout!

Highly amusing to watch the knots Republicans are tying themselves into to justify going against their conduct 4 years ago over Merrick Garland.

Rubio says: “unlike President Obama in 2016, President Trump is on the ballot and can be rewarded or held accountable for his choice in November.” Does that mean if, confirmation isn’t finished before the election, and voters reject Trump, the Senate should reject the nominee?

Aside the hypocrisy and mendacity, how exactly would unaccountable for anything Trump be “held accountable”?

    Impeachment?

  9. Just on the additional conservative judge on the US Supreme Court, from afar it is easy to say ‘suck it up Yanks, this can be your enduring reminder of voting for a reality TV star, or not voting, or voting for pie in the sky Greens, or writing in a name’.

As long as Dotard and his family are ejected from the White House, I’d be happy.

Just one example of the feedback on our new Ch7 identity in the press pack is getting. 😆

  11. Do I detect a more aggressive press pack today for the Daniel Andrews update …?

The ABC TV News crawl had: “BREAKING: New outbreak in Victoria, 28 cases, 2 dead”.

The hotel quarantine debacle will never be forgotton. Just like the Cain/ Kirner legacy it will go down in history and we will still be talking about it in 10/20/ 30 years time.
Level crossings, sky rail and injecting rooms will not get a look in.

  13. Are Albo and co going to be demanding answers as to why the taxpayers paid 30 million dollars for land that at best was worth 3 million. Land that is not going to be needed until 2050.
Come on. Surely this is not too hard.

How can on one hand Friday afternoon be taking out the garbage when Andrews fronts up to the media pack each and every day including weekends. And secondly you just said it will never be forgotten. Why would it then matter what day testimony is given.

  18. Denham Hitchcock is the new Ch7 antagonist at todays presser. He’s a reporter for their ‘Sunday Night’ program. I presume there’s a hit piece on the way.

  19. “Highly amusing to watch the knots Republicans are tying themselves into to justify going against their conduct 4 years ago over Merrick Garland.”

I’m not amused, because they don’t care about how ridiculous they sound; they’re not going to be embarrassed/shamed into doing the right thing. Got a massive sinking feeling about this election.

  20. NSW reports just two cases today, neither locally acquired.

Victoria’s jump to 28 cases today was hopefully just a hiccup. The seven day average is 27, down 40% from 42 a week ago.

Think positive: The massive hypocrisy of the Republicans appointing a new judge now – when they wouldn’t allow Obama to do so in similar circumstances – means they are not certain they are going to win.

Although I do agree it seems more likely than not that they will 🙁

Perhaps people like me who are now freaking out the SA border is open to NSW would feel much better about everything if NSW would just release their sewage testing results? To sooth our anxiety? Surely that’s not asking too much considering the disease we’re dealing with here.

  24. Would you jeopardise the economy of the state to save lives?

How well is that working out in the UK?

I would rather see them take an extra week or 2 at this stage to ensure that the infection is stamped out totally! I don’t want to be going back into a third lockdown which will take many months more.

How come the cost of that is never asked?
It’s like inaction to climate change, the cost of which is automatically assumed to be zero…

  25. Mavis, you’re very impressionable.

The whole point of the “nath” thing was that he/she/it was a shape-shifting, troll: a sock-puppet who was all things to all people.

The modus operandi was to join in discussions and arguments between posters – either acrimonious or friendly disagreements, or even agreements, it didn’t matter too much – and thereby try to make them worse in order to cause trouble. On any one day he/she/it could be your best friend (“Concern Troll” mode), and later on your worst enemy (straight “Troll” mode) and, by the night shift, your friend again.

He/she/its sock-puppetry was shameless. It wouldn’t surprise me if the various versions of “nath” got into arguments among themselves. It’d be par for the sock-puppet course.

For a while at the stary he was in bed, recuperating from some illness or injury. Then he was William’s best mate, delegated by William to keep an eye on things at PB. One minute he was railing against bad language. Next minute he was calling himself “a horrible c**t”. There was no mention of a spouse in his life until it became necessary to invent an Asian one. He was “nath” and he was “Michael”, and God knows who else he was around here. With sock-puppets and trolls you never know the truth. That’s the whole point of them doing what they do.

All the time he was probing the weaknesses, of which there are plenty here. And, if that sounds too high-falutin’ for what he did, try “crudely seeing what he could get away with”.

Because “nath” was not real it was simultaneously impossible to insult he/she/it, and the easiest thing in the world. When you’re an invented personna you can be as tough or as vulnerable as you need to be to carry on the deception.

But obviously “nath’s” tactics weren’t crude enough for you, Mavis. You seem to be about the only person here (besides the usual suspects) who continues to be fooled by the “nath” thing into thinking he/she/it was a real person with a real story, real feelings, and a real motivation to contribute positively here. Or with anything significant to add here besides lies, deceptions and sowing dissent.

I am under no delusions that pointing out the truth to you will change your position, if indeed you are a real person, with a real story and genuine motivations. There’s quite a bit of doubt about that, seeing as your own story changes so often to accommodate challenges to it. In any case, irrational beliefs and faiths like yours, even if claiming to be based on “evidence”, tend to be resistant to logic and facts.

Have the Victorian Injecting Rooms actually caused any problems, or have they, as in NSW, saved lives instead (not including the heart attacks of the Liberal pearl clutchers here)?

    Scott Morrison was Treasurer then.

People may be interested to know that when Morrison began as Treasurer – that’s when the grants rorting as a campaigning tool really began.

Treasury head then was Phil Gaetjens, the same one who “looked into” #sportsrorts.
