ReachTEL: 54-46 to Labor

Labor maintains its commanding lead in the latest ReachTEL poll, as respondents give the thumbs down to company tax cuts.

A ReachTEL poll for Sky News finds Labor maintaining its 54-46 lead from the last such poll a month ago. However, the primary votes are not quite as strong for Labor as last time, when Labor’s two-party lead was subdued by a strong flow of respondent-allocated preferences to the Coalition. This time the Coalition is up one on the primary vote to 34%, while both Labor and the Greens are down a point, to 36% and 10% respectively, and One Nation are steady on 7%.

The poll also finds 56% of respondents opposed to company tax cuts, with only 29% supportive, and only 26% thinking it likely the cuts will be passed on to workers, compared with 68% for unlikely. Not surprisingly, a question on whether Tony Abbott should return as Liberal leader after the next election finds little support, with 25% for yea and 64% for nay.

Together with the Newspoll and Essential Research, the ReachTEL results have been included in the lastest BludgerTrack update, which once again records essentially no change on voting intention, with ReachTEL’s strong result for Labor cancelling out a weak one from Essential Research. However, Labor is up two on the seat projection for Queensland, mostly because Galaxy’s 52-48 lead for the Coalition in that state in a Courier-Mail poll a month ago is no longer exerting its pull. Also included are the latest leadership ratings from Newspoll, which take a small bite out of Malcolm Turnbull’s net approval and preferred prime minister lead. We should have Newspoll’s quarterly state breakdowns next week, which will make the BludgerTrack state breakdowns a little more robust.

If you’re a Crikey subscriber, you can enjoy my piece today on how the recent halt to the rise of minor parties might play out in the Senate over the coming years. Below is a chart I knocked up to illustrate it, which I decided not to use. It combines federal and state election results, so that the reading at any point in time uses results from the most recent elections federally in each state, with each election weighted by its voting population.

  1. Bool, exactly my point!

People got hysterical. Everyone and his dog came out of the woodwork suddenly ‘knowing’ all about cricket, moralising.

My anger/hysteria stems from my belief the crowd reaction was over the top.

Yes it is just a game. I love cricket but I recognise it is just a game. I also recognise these men made a mistake/mistakes but the way so many ‘nailed these guys to the cross’ (someone above made that allusion) when the ICC gave them a single match suspension shows how over the top the crowd outrage is was.

My other observation is that without personally knowing these men, we’ve had people saying things like ‘I never liked him anyway’ ‘he’s a Prima donna’ … claiming corruption (evidence?), claiming nastiness, claiming that because they lived ‘in a bubble of superiority’ they must somehow have a warped view of the world. Judgmental bullshit, in other words.

Most of it is throwaway hearsay. It is a demonstration of the “Twitter/Daily Telegraph uneducated mentality” where as human beings, we are fed ‘impressions’ from various sources and take them away as gospel (pun intended).

  2. It passed under the radar, but one of the closest results in the SA election occurred in the seat of Morphett, which the Liberal candidate (and former Collingwood footballer) Stephen Patterson won with some 60% of the 2PPP vote.

If the hard-working Labor candidate had got about 300 fewer votes, or former Liberal Duncan McFettridge and all the other candidates who preferenced him had gained about 300 more votes between them, McFettridge would have retained the seat he lost by a hair’s breadth in the preselection.

Welp, you’re certainly entitled to your view Jen, as are others.

And FWIW I’ve been watching and enjoying cricket since as long as I can remember. I have never approved of Smith as captain as I don’t believe he has the leadership skills required for the role. This episode has proven my opinion has merit. Ditto Warner.

I think peoples’ reaction to the blatant cheating was a manifestation of years of watching on as our high profile cricketers went about their careers in a less than respectful manner.

From my point of view, Bancroft and Smith have shown genuine remorse. They now ‘do their time’ and come back when/if their form warrants… and we all move on.

  5. Victorian upper house still working through fire rescue bill. It’s been going for 20hrs. Both sides very determined 😆

  6. Well said jenauthor
Just a game and hysteria food for the tabloids. Lots of talk and people standing in judgement of others making bad decisions when dealing with what is a lucrative business for some.

A solidly entertaining night, thanks to Nine and the ABC — assisted by The Project running the Stormy Daniels interview from US 60 Minutes. Young Sheldon (1.57 million nationally) on Nine was a more than OK prequel to The Big Bang Theory, and the ABC’s usual Monday night line up of Australian Story (1.07 million), Four Corners (1.07 million nationally) and Media Watch (930,000 nationally) was the strongest it has been for some weeks.

But then, the competition — Australian Spartan, 676,000 on Seven and Batchelor in Paradise, 838,000 on Ten — wasn’t great. In fact despite all the hype for Bachelor, the ABC still beat Ten both in total people and overall, and the ABC’s post 7pm programming ran second to Nine’s. Oh, and the ABC’s main channel (16.4%) finished second to Nine’s 20.5% and ahead of Seven’s 15.3%. Ten’s main channel share at least managed to climb above single digits, where it spent much of last week and the week before.

I posted a screen shot of TV audiences a couple of days ago. The above may be of further interest (or not).

it was a thrill to get a congratulatory phone call from The President of The United States of America. POTUS is the Fifth President I have received support from! what a life!

Not sure if this is sarcastic or genuine. Apparently in the new release of Roseanne she’s an ardent Trump supporter!

    don,
That’s why i feel another 6/12 months is worth waiting before going ahead.
Tesla power walls will be cheaper by then, but i accept the $10,000 (currently). Once they get to ~$5000 – $7000 i would be good to go.

If you think battery prices are going to halve in 6-12 months, you have not read the article you posted very closely.

You install solar + batteries to reduce your C02 emissions, not to save money.

    Definitely.
But a fourth rate city like Adelaide hasn’t a chance of ever hosting one.

Mine is a samsung as well. I think I have got rid of it. I don’t have an ad-blocker on the mobile as its very short on memory. I might try to get something on it though now.

    **********************************************

From what I can gather Confessions – it has been a contentious issue that Trump has flouted constitutional safeguards against corruption by maintaining ownership of his business empire while in office. Trump has failed to disentangle himself from his hotels and other businesses, making him vulnerable to inducements by officials seeking to curry favor.

Trump, has ceded day-to-day control of his businesses to his sons. Critics have said that is not a sufficient safeguard.

…. and in todays news :

Emoluments Lawsuit Against President Trump Allowed To Proceed

A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit alleging President Trump is violating the anti-corruption sections of the Constitution, known as the emoluments clauses, can proceed.

Federal District Judge Peter Messitte, in Greenbelt, Md., ruled that Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine have legal standing to sue Trump. They allege that Trump wrongly profits when foreign officials do business at the hotel he owns near the White House.

  21. The Independent Australia article from BKs Dawn Patrol , on Turnbull’s office signing off on Campion’s new position focuses on the point that didn’t arise this week. Why did the PMO have to sign off on the job if at the time she wasn’t a partner of Joyce?

Or from the other perspective, Joyce and Campion being partners had to get approval from the PMO for the position to go ahead, therefore Turnbull’s office knew of the relationship and so he (Turnbull) lied to parliament when asked if he was aware of it.

Samsung as well. I close the browser completely and reload the page. Open it back up and boom, same thing.

  23. The sledging involving Warner’s wife raises interesting questions. Sledging is bad and sledging of relatives/slut shaming is absolutely deplorable BUt Warner is a public figure and sportsman, who I hope has had some training and support in negotiating difficult situations. Was the violent reaction appropriate?

It’s such a rort. Apparently DoJ officials use Trump hotels whenever they travel and this is some edict from above to do so.

    Definitely misuse of public money.

All sport should be played in Dunlop Volleys

Many years ago, that was the only shoe that Sydney Bushwalkers ever used.

And they worked just fine. Cheap, light, good grip, breathable.

But wear them or something similar on the Overland Track in summer (I use a very light ‘cross trainer’ which sadly is no longer available, grips on wet rock, (which ‘proper’ boots do not!), a delight to wear) and I am here to tell you that the local Tassie self-appointed Boot Police will give you hell.

I just told them to get stuffed.

  29. ** But a fourth rate city like Adelaide hasn’t a chance of ever hosting one. **
    Hee hee.

Hey! Dissing Adelaide is MY GIG!

I personally benefit from the poor rating people in other states give Adelaide. I can afford acreage with a large modern house in a leafy ruralesque suburb only 20minutes from the CBD and an international airport. So dont you EastCoasters ever think of moving into this 4th rate city and ruining my lifestyle!

  30. I know how Peever is so that provides a clue to the others. But I won’t spoil it.

In his Previous life Peever was a senior Rio executive and that attitudes that he brought to his current role caused some angst last year.

  31. 54-46. Hmmmm, when one of these repuatable pollsters hit a 55-45 (regardless of if it is just an anomaly MOE type reading) there will be a lot of huffing and puffing from the little engine that could.

Not sure Turnbull can survive it, even considering the lack of contenders.
