First up, note that there are new posts below this one the near-finalisation of the Queensland election result, and the Tasmanian state poll from EMRS.
With three new polls added this week, the latest reading of BludgerTrack suggests last week’s surge to Labor to have been an aberration. However, the seat tally has wigged out this week, with both Ipsos and Essential recording particularly bad results for the Coalition from highly sensitive Queensland, and Ipsos producing a profoundly off-trend 57-43 lead to the Coalition in Western Australia. These results respectively cause Labor to gain four seats, and lose five – maybe the Queensland result reflects the impact of the state election, but I think you can take it for granted that the Liberal gain in Western Australia will wash out over the coming weeks.
Newspoll and Ipsos both produced new data on leadership ratings, but the trend measures here haven’t changed much. A further footnote from the Ipsos poll: the respondent-allocated two-party preferred result was 52-48, compared with a headline figure of 53-47, which is the best result the Coalition has had from anyone other than YouGov for a while.
As always, full results on the sidebar.

Kim Beazley on SD:
http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/screws-tighten-on-sam-dastyari-as-labor-elders-weigh-in-20171211-h02ly9.html
Mr Beazley said Senator Dastyari needed to consider the example of politicians who’ve stepped aside when their ongoing problems have made it hard for their parties to stay on message.
Remind me again how many times Mr Beazley won the election. The Greens seem have come out of the woodwork to supports the Liberal destabilization campaign along with some very naive Labor supporters.
After kill sam works; who is next? Think it through.

That’s not a code. it’s self serving bulldust!
Rex
I reckon there is just a serious case of people in the Labor Party just don’t know when to shut up.
Doubtless there are plenty of people who want to see the back of Sam but why would Beazley comment? Only because he does like the sound of his own voice and he was asked.
And I was a fan of the bloke when he was leader.
Everything you say to a journalist is taken down and parts of it will be used against you when it suits.

This evening the PM has admitted he regrets rolling predecessor Tony Abbot and justifying it with a string of poor Newspolls.
“I do regret having said it only because it allowed people to focus on that rather than the substantive reasons,” he told Daily Telegraph columnist Miranda Devine.

As far as I have seen, the Greens have been almost completely silent on the Dastyari issue as of late. Do you have any links to support this assertion?

Bahaha, I bet he does!
SD is being given lots of hints to go quietly but he just isn’t listening, yet.

How many Newspolls before the next election? MTPM May break JGPM’s record before he loses the next election.

This is Turnbull doing contrition.
I reckon Q & A can snatch total fuck up from a disaster tonight!
When did “by-election” become gender confused as “bi-election”?
Osman Faruqi on The Drum made the observation that all the Labor MPs quoted today were from Labor’s Left. Linda Burney, Catherine King, story is about Tanya Plibersek. Are they trying to clear the way for Kristina Kenneally? Should she lose on Saturday.
Or, if she doesn’t lose, there will be space for someone from the Left maybe. Though the Right won’t like that idea.
Nevertheless, watch that space on Sunday.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. I get the copy and paste thing, but not really the quotes. I’m using an iPad 2 that was my mother’s, and Safari. Before that, it was on my PC and no trouble, but I’m starting to realise why my husband used to swear that we’d never have an Apple product in the house.
Roxanna,
I am no Apple expert! Windows, Android and Samsung are my bailiwick!
Don’t worry, an Apple expert will be along presently. 🙂
Roxanne, use the word blockquote surrounded by > and < symbols. One at the start of and the end of the quote. Put a / symbol between < and the word blockquote for the one used at the end of the quote.

You can get the google chrome browser from the appstore – install and open it – find ‘more tools’ in the drop down menu in the top right corner – extensions – install PB comments plugin which has the quote function.
I wonder if we will have the ritual bollocking from the MSM about identifying who advised Turnbull not to meet the Dalai lama.
https://www.sbs.com.au/news/pm-has-no-plans-to-meet-dalai-lama-as-china-warns-against-meeting
Turnbull is resigned to the fact that he’s been defeated as the polls have told us us over a long period of time. Turnbull is very aware of the trend.
Getting out with some dignity is all that remains This is his only purpose and any distraction could help him.
The RW nutters have been very quiet. Labor are not falling for the Dastyari ruse.
Rolling out Dutto and his double agent meme and then Scomo to assure us the corporations will pay their tax next year, both reak of desperation.
Shorten all systems go, head down, nothing to concerned about.
The voting public have seen this government to be no more relevant to their life and situation as were the dying days of the Howard government. A surer omen no less than the aging eyebrows dragged onto the Bennelong hustings and just as quickly disgorged back into retirement.
This Turnbull government is the leftover remnants of Howards now disgraced mob of out of touch purveyors of self-interest and wealth accumulation while legislating the instruments of inequality.
We have no polls from the LP for Bennelong as they only show the precarious position of both Bennelong and Turnbull’s government.
Labor have Bennelong and are disinclined to fist pump at such a long way out from the by-election.
The Dastyari debacle has spectacularly backfired.
Next weeks conversation will be all about advising Turnbull of his considerable options. If we were all so lucky.
Turnbull will be confined to history as the largely unlucky failed aristocrat permitted to see out his days within his harbourside enclave.
Turnbull has set the republican movement back years and will do well to accept his inability to be a team player.
Most of the LP believe they would’ve been better off with Abbott. What a sad indictment!
c@t:
As much as I like a more left-wing Labor party, I do really hope this whole saga isn’t part of some ill-advised power-play by the Labor Left. The priority right now is ensuring that the Coalition is kicked back into opposition. Everything else is a pointless distraction while they are this close to regaining government.
It’s obvious that there is a sharp divide between those PBs who want to see Dastyari gone and those who don’t and I would like to get an idea of roughly how many there are in each camp.
For those who want to participate just say yes or no. There is no need for explanations. I will start the ball rolling with a vote of YES.
Apparently, Turnbull’s advisors urged him not to meet the Dalai lama because this would offend China. We need a bigger witch hunt comrades.

If that is the program better get Rex (our very own green troll)and Pegasus on board.
C@t,
It was interesting today that both Linda Burney and Catherine King went out of their way to point out how ” decisive ” Bill Shorten had been and remind one and all Shorten had put Sam on the back bench as punishment and how appropriate that had been.
If you listen to all of the interview with Burney you get a different context. Burney gave Sam a pat on the back for his work re the banks etc. and did not rip into him at all.
So, I found not think it has anything to do at all with Shorten and was ,if anything, nothing more than a limp lettuce hit on Sam. Re a replacement for Sam. Perhaps, as you say,it is about Kristina K. securing a senate spot but as she is from the right would Linda Burney and Victorian left Catherine King be working for her to fill the spot ?
I do not know what is unfolding and who is the director but it is obvious to me that it is a calculated and well orchestrated plan to slide Sam out.
Is it in place to make it as easy as possible for Sam to ride into the sunset with his head held high after doing the right thing and putting party first ?
As I said I have no idea but it is getting really interesting.
Cheers.

yes and no. But, not yet!

No, but in the interest of the Party it’s moving towards a yes!
Looks like Dastyari is being invited to go into the study with the silver pistol and do the decent thing…..
Too bad he has the hide of a rhino – unfortunately Shorten will have to man up and do the deed.
Does he have the ticker?
Darn,
Yes. I think he should go. When ? I will leave that to the party to decide.
It is very very interesting to see it unfold.
Cheers.

“Darn @ #1926 Monday, December 11th, 2017 – 5:18 pm”
No. Its a beat up. Will fade out after Bennelong if Alexander wins, and be remarkably insignificant if KK wins and Truffles runs for cover. 🙂 Go KK!!!!!
Interesting Bennelong facts:
Bob Carr in Bennelong with Keneally – the Obeid/Beijing faction in action?
Chris Bowen photographed with the Chinese billionaire – questions to answer?
Who is funding the KK campaign? How do we know the money is clean?
Asha Leu @ #1883 Monday, December 11th, 2017 – 7:17 pm
So who forced poor Sammy to do the things he did?
He is the author of his own misfortune.
Bill Shorten would be in the backroom as we speak doing a deal to find Dastyari’s replacement as his factional numbers man.
“Interesting Bennelong facts:”
With ESJ here, is Bennelong in fact, a village without its idiot??
Darn:
No
I really don’t care if I am alone. Sam should be able to express an opinion; and the wording of his statement made it clear he was expressing his opinion.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
No one deserves a kangaroo court. I ask again;what exactly is his crime?

Turnbull and many others have been photographed with”the Chinese billionaire “; cut the xenophobia crap and move on to stuff that does less damage to out national interest.
Maybe Dastyari will defect formally to Beijing after Saturday? Give a press conference from Beijing, wikileaks style?
Sam D resigning from parliament would be no loss to the ALP (he would be replaced by another Labor Senator), and it would provide the party with some moral high ground on the issue of campaign finance. It’s not as though Sam D is a great asset as a parliamentarian. He isn’t an accomplished legislator, he isn’t an impressive public presenter, he isn’t a skillful retail politician. He’s a right-wing power broker who epitomises the worst aspects of his party. He has become a very high profile liability. He is eminently expendable.
of course Nicholas, you are the voice of reason here amongst the useful idiots.
Edwina StJohn @ #1936 Monday, December 11th, 2017 – 8:26 pm
It appears that Labor Right castrated you far better than you could do yourself!
Dastyari is only 34, plenty of time to relaunch a career in inner ring Beijing.
