Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

The latest result from Newspoll lands slightly at the upper end of the government’s recent form.

Courtesy of The Australian, the latest result from Newspoll records Labor with a two-party lead of 52-48, down from 53-47 in the last poll (which was three weeks ago rather than the usual two, owing to Easter). Labor and the Greens are both down a point on the primary vote, to 35% and 9%, with the Coalition and One Nation steady on 36% and 10%. Malcolm Turnbull is up two on approval to 32% and down two on disapproval to 57%, while Bill Shorten is up one to 33% and down one to 53%. Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister shifts from 41-32 to 42-33.

So, what do people think of Kroger failing to defend Kelly O’Dwyer from the suggested challenge by Peta Credlin in Higgins on the basis that O’Dwyer had indicated she was going to back Reith for President?

Nothing. Too many proper nouns; that sentence is basically opaque to me.

A transcript of an Oval Office interview Friday with President Donald Trump by AP White House Correspondent Julie Pace.

It’s quite long and gives some examples of Trump’s magical thinking.
This is an example of his delusions (or lack of self-awareness?)

TRUMP: Yeah, it’s funny: One of the best chemistries I had was with (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel.

    (Crosstalk) AP: Really?

    TRUMP: Chancellor Merkel.

TRUMP: And I guess somebody shouted out, “Shake her hand, shake her hand,” you know. But I never heard it. But I had already shaken her hand four times. You know, because we were together for a long time.

AP: Did you expect you would have good chemistry with her?

TRUMP: No. Because, um, I’m at odds on, you know, the NATO payments and I’m at odds on immigration. We had unbelievable chemistry. And people have given me credit for having great chemistry with all of the leaders, including el-Sissi.

I also thought that if Kroger and Peter Costello could fall out so much, then it was also indicative of what a toxic organisation it must be internally.

  4. TRUMP: And I guess somebody shouted out, “Shake her hand, shake her hand,” you know. But I never heard it. But I had already shaken her hand four times. You know, because we were together for a long time.

OMG does the man not realise that people saw the deliberate snub he gave her, much to Merkel’s amusement?! Delusional, totally freakin delusional.

I see that Melanchon is going the usual Left route of playing with fire instead of endorsing Macron to beat Le Pen.
    What a self-indulgent arsehole!

Interesting. Can you link what you are referring to?

  6. So, does anyone have any clues about where Mathew Guy currently sits in the Kroger vs. the rest camps?
Now there’s another very unappealing character. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him being anything other than barely concealed viciousness and just negative+++.
Perhaps he’s modelling himself on Abbott.

  7. I mentioned KRudd this morning. He was on CNN. Not much of note.

I can imagine he wouldn’t offer much of note, so wondering why you would make this comment. ???

  8. Thanks Boewar, from the link.

While voices on the left and right have endorsed Macron this morning, the defeated far-left candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon, has pointedly refused to do the same.

A sore loser over how close he came perhaps? As long as he doesn’t endorse Le Pen.

Says little miss innocent who commented on Rudd on the previous page!
    Staggering lack of self awareness.

I don’t think his angry persona works well with most voters.
Labor should look for ways of giving it more exposure.

  11. Q
Where have you heard ‘Gimme the job or I’ll wreck the job!’ before?
The Greens, fronts for the Trots, are handmaidens to Trump, May, Turnbull and now Le Pen.
    They have no shame.

  12. bemused
Guy is so unpleasant as a person, I think Labor can just let him do the damage himself.
Anyway, I’m off for a bit of dinner, so talk later.

  13. Where have you heard ‘Gimme the job or I’ll wreck the job!’ before?

Is this a rhetorical question? Abbott and Rudd have been in yours and others’ sights for years now for exactly this behaviour.

  14. Re North Korea at night. The same was true for east and west Germany in 1989. The lights stopped at the border. It was the third most striking thing I have seen from an aircraft. Burning off well gas in the middle east was number one; the shear scale of it. Number two was landing in Hong Kong before they moved the airport.

  15. The North Korean people seem to be totally crushed. It really does look like Orwell’s 1984. There don’t seem to be any dissidents, unlike other dictatorships like the old Soviet Union, for example. The only recent parallel would seem to be the Khmer Rouge, although they didn’t have a powerful army.

If the regime did collapse, like the Eastern European former communist states, it’s hard to see how it could reorganise itself into any sort of functioning post-totalitarian society. Countries like Poland and Czekoslovakia quickly reorganised themselves into democracies, found people to take charge and are doing reasonably well, even with bumps along the way. The way for others has been a bit more rocky but they are mostly now functioning states and societies. But with North Korea you would have 20 million starving civilians and a well equipped military of 2 million or so. It won’t end well.

The before and after shots are going to require assessment at a fine resolution.

Fascinatingly weird, especially the reference to catabolism.

  17. Nice spell check correction.

Catabolism (from Greek κάτω kato, “downward” and βάλλειν ballein, “to throw”) is the set of metabolic pathways that breaks down molecules into smaller units that are either oxidized to release energy, or used in other anabolic reactions.

‘The ones who clearly are in that echo chamber.
    Perhaps I should type v e r y s l o w l y to help you understand.’

    Oh, so you meant confessions.

Why didn’t you say so? Worried that the obsession is becoming just a little too obvious?

Lovely illustration of the inner workings of the Libs.
    Loyal folk aren’t they?

I think I’ll have another serving of popcorn while I watch the L/NP piss away scarce resources squabbling over a safe seat.

  20. zoomster:

Most PBers understand bemused is the straight up definition of an internet troll, someone who baits and inflames commenters in order to get noticed and remarked upon which you have to say is his obvious MO.

You aren’t that, so it strikes me as odd that you’d buy into his bullshit thus tarring yourself with that brush. Best bet is to ignore him.

  21. It’s instructive hat rich leaners are going after one of their own because she was seen as making minor incursions into their absurdly generous tax avoision superannuation arrangements. An incoming Labor Government will face the same times 10, squared. The forces arrayed against it will be ready, prepared and well funded well before the start of any election campaign, media megaphones and dollars at the ready. Labor needs to be prepared.

  22. My only concern with the Kelly O’Dwyer thing is that shes going to be dumped while on maternity leave. I think shes terrible and idiotic, but I wouldnt want her dumped right after shes given birth.

  23. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2017/apr/24/french-election-macron-le-pen-second-round-live

While voices on the left and right have endorsed Macron this morning, the defeated far-left candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon, has pointedly refused to do the same.

Speaking on RTL radio Louis Aliot, the vice president of the National Front party who has been in a relationship with the leader of the Front National since 2010 (if you read French there’s more on him here), said Le Pen offers an alternative for anyone skeptical of the European Union and France’s role in it.

Melenchon plays second fiddle to the neo-fascist Le Pen. Disgusting.
