Advertiser poll: 52-48 to Liberal in Boothby

Adelaide’s Sunday Mail newspaper (a News Limited stablemate of The Advertiser) has published a poll of 564 voters conducted on Wednesday in the Adelaide electorate of Boothby, which shows the Liberals with a 52-48 two-party lead. This represents a 1 per cent swing to Labor, but it comes off a disastrous local campaign in 2007 when the swing to Labor was limited to 2.4 per cent, compared with 6.8 per cent statewide. On the primary vote, Liberal member Andrew Southcott is on 46 per cent against 35 per cent for Labor candidate Annabel Digance, 10 per cent for the Greens and 3 per cent for Family First. Further attitudinal questions are better for Labor than might be expected: the Liberals’ lead as best party to manage the economy is 48 per cent to 43 per cent, Labor leads on the River Murray 46 per cent to 29 per cent, and 45 per cent of respondents believed Gillard cares more about families compared with 36 per cent for Tony Abbott. The margin of error on the poll is about 4 per cent. The previous Advertiser poll a week ago had Labor with a staggering 67-33 lead in Kingston, where their margin is 4.5 per cent.

  1. confessions,

[Funnily enough I just saw one of the Kevin Lemon ads tonight. And it wasn’t the guillotine one with Julia either, it was the original they had before Rudd Removal. ]

They must be worried about Kevvie coming back to haunt them after Tone’s single handed killing off, burying & cremating the political corpse of the Ruddster.

Well that’s what he implied at the Liberal Conference in WA the other day! 😉

[The spectre of Kevin Rudd is continuing to haunt Labor’s election chances as issues related to the former prime minister dominate the campaign as it nears the halfway mark.]

  2. [it is always good to actually READ a blog entry before calling people morons (which I am relatively confident I am not, just because I hold views contrary to others here]
Anyone who links the ability to tell the truth to religious persuasion is a bloody moron.
You are not nearly as clever as you presume yourself to be Mr.Salt Shaker.

  3. GG

No no, please don’t get me started or it’ll turn into the Monty Python Poll Bludger-fest and I’ll probably have an accident laughing.

  4. [Anyone outside of SA have a good feel for the effectiveness of the TV advertisements so far during this campaign?]

Triff what’s your view on the ads here?

I don’t watch enough TV (I’m a specific time viewer/watch TV on DVD) to really see many. Are they effective in your opinion?

  5. [It’s what happens to bullies when they get a bit of their own medicine?]
Interestingly, the link of Dee at 795 also alludes to Abbott being a bully as well

  6. Dee,

    [Scorpio
Still reckon this is the best of the Rabbott’s tongue teasers. ]

Blimey, Dee! I’ve not long finished supper. It went close to ending up all over my keyboard watching that! 😉

That’s Tone’s secret weapon to bring home the female vote at the election.

I think he plans to have it shown on every Channel on the hour right up to the Wednesday before polling day! 😉

  7. Got a visit from the Lib candidate here in Kingsford-Smith tonight. Seemed like a nice enough bloke, given the company he would be keeping but obviously won’t be. Politely sent him on his way but at least he was out on a cold wet night door-knocking. I will give a rolled gold gurantee that that I won’t be answering the door to Garrett. It’s just not his style (as well as being a fair way from his home address in the Southern Highlands). Unless you live on the eastern side of Marine Parade, Maroubra *, the big bloke simply isn’t interested. Similarly, the Kingsford bus stop is reputedly the busiest in suburban Sydney, but not the sort of place for a rock star to be seen. Which of course is why he has never been there in six years that I know of. Laurie Brereton was a regular and old Lionel Bowen before him was as well. Garrett – a bit too big a tax on his gig.

    * No houses on the eastern side of Marine Parade. Just the ocean and a lot of photo opportunities. Why do we get the impression that Mascot, Botany, La Perouse, Redfern, Daceyville and a dozen other similar suburbs aren’t really Garrett’s type of suburb?

  8. [Triff what’s your view on the ads here?

I don’t watch enough TV (I’m a specific time viewer/watch TV on DVD) to really see many. Are they effective in your opinion?]

Pebbles, I have a Tivo and never watch live TV, so always fast-forward through advertisements, so have hardly seen any either.

I figure we’re probably not going to see as many as the other states given its pretty much expected that only 1 or 2 seats could change hands here.

  9. [I figure we’re probably not going to see as many as the other states given its pretty much expected that only 1 or 2 seats could change hands here.]

Agreed. And it looks like our success her will be more on the grassroots level too.

Still I was just curious if there was anything of interest (of course there are a million extremely negative Liberal ads playing here)

  10. [Tony Abbott, as almost every blogger has assumed tonight, IS under compunction to tell the truth because he claims to be a Christian.]

Seriously Mick, where do you pull this rubbish from? Your points would be just as well made if you didn’t include bizarre religious references. Nobody thinks Abbott, or any other politician, should be honest because of their religion or lack thereof.

  11. Despite the media pointing out that Labor are going to go negative, I don’t think it matters at all. All parties are expected to go negative these days.

At the end of the day, all that matters is the quality of the advertisement and whether it leaves the viewer with the intended message that Abbott isn’t up to the job.

  12. [which, incidently, LTEP, praised and lambasted both sides of Australian politics]

Praising and lambasting both sides of politics does not make you a centrist, which is the claim you made that I’m disagreeing with. I generally consider myself left of centre but can praise and criticize things both ‘sides’ do. This does not make me a centrist.

  13. Brisbane TV has been running Rabbott’s trainwreck, Mining tax ads from Confederation of Commerce and Unplugged ads from Labor.

  14. The comment is true. Julia is under no COMPUNCTION to tell the truth as an atheist, unless there is some secular charter, book or ‘general vibe, man’ that I have not been informed about. Tony Abbott, as almost every blogger has assumed tonight, IS under compunction to tell the truth because he claims to be a Christian. Whether Julia does or not is personal choice.

The fact that Tony regularly fails to tell truth and has so far escaped the wrath of the Flying Spaghetti Monster says more about the Monster than Abbott. And you’d think the Monster would notice, especially as one of the most entertaining mis-truths involved his Sydney cardinal.

  15. [Despite the media pointing out that Labor are going to go negative, I don’t think it matters at all. All parties are expected to go negative these days.]

Yep. Every election someone says “My opponent is likely to resort to negativity.” While I can’t be certain, I’d hazard a guess and say it has no effect on who actually wins.

In fact, if anything, it runs the risk of them looking like victims.

As long as it sticks to being against Abbott’s policies and general leadership qualities, indignation will not be a factor (or rather it will be superceded by the attacks’ effect)

  16. I have seen three ads tonight. Two liberal ones that talk about slashing spending including the one where the two locomotions collide and one featuring both Abbot and Hockey and a Labor one talking about how Abbot plans to cut funding to projects such as the National Broadband Network. To me it seems that Abbots ads only served to prove the Labor ad’s point.

  17. [I say bring on the negative ads against Abbott. I have yet to see any myself though.]

Well we’re both probably not the best to ask on that front. It’s probably the QLD and NSW folks who will get the thick of it.

  18. My neighbour bought a Galah yesterday. Turns out it is a Liberal Galah.

All it keeps saying over & over again is “stop the reckless spending, fix Labor’s debt and stop the boats”.

I told him he should name it Tony the abbott, but he said he was too busy looking up recipe’s for parrot pie! 😉

I reckon that’s about as good a yarn as Mick was spinning earlier!

  19. If keeping Abbott out of office requires a take no prisoners approach the that’s what it takes, it’s not like his past doesn’t provide a rich seam to mine. Carpet bomb I say.

  20. [ sspencer_63
@BernardKeane yes, for those tweeting from outside the ACT we are seeing prime time Lib TV ads here bagging the Greens. half a minute ago via web in reply to BernardKeane]

    And this:

    [KeeptheBshonest KeeptheBshonest
Abbott heralds the bad news leak from Labor tomorrow on his Canberra way of life ??? 3 minutes ago via web ]

  21. TSOP.

True, but I am seeing the negative Lib ads. “Train wreck” one 30 minutes ago. It would just give me a lift to see one against the Libs for a change.

Has the Downer/Rudd issued played itself out, or do you think there is life left in it?

  22. Galah Soup

    3 Galahs
    3 medium onions
    bunch of herbs
    salt and pepper
one small river stone (about fist sized)

Add onions, galahs, herbs and stone to the pot of boiling water.

Boil for 3 to 4 hours being careful not to allow the soup to boil down too low.

When the rock is tender throw the galahs away and eat the rock.

  23. Boerwar,

Bluey’s like a good wine. Just gets better with age and an occasional turning over!

    Tonight’s effort 10/10! 😉

  24. My neighbour bought a Galah yesterday. Turns out it is a Liberal Galah.

Well…All Libs are galahs. But not all Galahs are libs.

  25. scorpio. My neighbour has a Liberal dog.

It keeps yelling the same crap over and over all day. At first it is threatening, but then you realise it’s all bark and no bite. From what I hear too, he’s actually a big wuss! 😉

  26. Mick

[In fact, I have voted for 4 parties in the last decade. I dare anyone else in this blog to claim that.]

Counting the senate, I’m up to six in the last decade (and that’s not even including informal). I dare anyone to claim that!!

  27. Recipe for Liberal dogs:

Bosintang is made by boiling dog meat with thin soy paste,
tearing it into pieces, putting ingredients such as green onion, leek, stalk of taro,
brake into broth, and boiling it again to make Bosintang. In Kyungsang
province, to get rid of the smell, perilla purple are put in the soup. Perilla are
also used for ridding the smell. Taste of perilla is similar to that of dog, and
it becomes a good match to dog meat. Side dishes of dog meat are Kimchi,
fresh peppers, and cucumbers. Adding a glass of Soju(liquor) enhances the
    taste.

  28. Libs train wreck ad during 48 minutes. A couple of no trust Abbott ads as well.

I like the Nurses union ads best. More sincerity without outright finger pointing.

  29. [Recipe for Liberal dogs:]

    Hahaha!

In reality, he’s a good boy and if he could understand politics and had the right to vote, I doubt he’d vote Liberal.

I suspect most animals would never vote Liberal (if they could and knew what it was)

…except lemurs. Because they are shitheads.

  30. My neighbour has a Liberal dog.

My neighbour *is* one, surprisingly friendly though.

Just don’t turn your back mate. Its the breed you know.

  31. On Downer: extraordinary that he sat on these revelations through the 2007 campaign, and earlier, while Rudd systematically demolished his cred and reputation over AWB, isnt it?

I guess he must have forgotten all about it straight after it happened! Just like those reports on his desk about AWB funds to going to Saddam Hussein.
