Essential Research 2PP+: Labor 50, Coalition 45 (open thread)

Essential Research spices up an uneventful set of voting intention numbers with a finding that nearly one in ten respondents choose the red pill.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll gives Labor its best result on voting intention in two months, their primary vote up two to 33%, the Coalition steady on 32%, the Greens up one to 14% and One Nation down two to 6%, with the undecided component down one to 5%. Their lead on the 2PP+ measure is out from 49-45 to 50-45. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1125.

Also featured are questions on COVID-19, including a finding that 52% consider Australia well prepared for future pandemics compared with 38% for not well prepared, and an unexpected foray on the “nature of reality”, which finds precisely equal proportions of Coalition, Labor and Greens voters alert to the fact that we are “living in a simulation”. The 301 Victorian respondents were asked to rate Daniel Andrews’ contribution to Victoria, with 37% opting for very good or quite good compared with 40% for very poor or quite poor.

  1. Nimbys against wind power. Funny, they don’t look anything like the people who demonstrate about logging or offshore oil and gas exploration.

Hamas starts taking captured Israelis into the Gaza Strip. Hamas has taken 35 Israelis hostage. Ofir Libstein, the mayor of Israel’s Sha’ar Hanegev region, has been killed by Hamas.
    ————-

This is going from bad to worse very quickly.

  3. Nothing on this scale has taken place with Israel in decades, probably the 80s is the last time there was a large scale infiltration. But of this scale, with the numbers getting as far as they have you be looking at pre-1967 era attacks.

This is not the type of operation that is dreamed up overnight. It has been being planned for months, if not years. There is an estimated 60 militants within Israel proper and there are possibly dozens of hostages that have been taken. That takes coordination and planning of a lot of people.

However, It is not coordinated with other groups. It looks to be an exclusively Hamas effort (possibly with the small other groups within Gaza like Islamic Jihad). The PLO doesn’t seem to be involved, nor Hezbollah.

Hamas is unlikely to be able to substant the size of offensive for more than a few days. Then they going to be on the defensive. It is going to get uglier.

  4. The two locals vox-popped by the ABC in their article on the wind farm ‘protest’ were:

“Nelson Bay resident Gail Nicolosi fears the proposal will ruin the lifestyle of the quiet beach-side community.

“There hasn’t been enough information given out, except for today and just recently,” she said. “They’re charging ahead and doing it without [adequate] consultation.”…

… Local tourism operator Frank Future, who has made a living off whale-watching tours for almost 30 years, said offshore wind could destroy his livelihood.

“I rely entirely on the environment,” he said. “It will put an enormous amount of noise into the water; there’s going to be a lot of traffic across the whale highway. That’s inevitably going to have an issue with whales.””

Gail Nicolosi is no mere ‘Nelson Bay resident. She is also ‘Company Director at Energy Decisions Pty Ltd’. Hmmmm …

    https://au.linkedin.com/in/gail-nicolosi-1b252a3b

And Frank Future has been a prominent advocate of Government actions before – just not this Labor one. I guess Scomo bought the Coalition a lot of enduring small business loyalty with Jobkeeper, as well as carefully ‘selected’ regional development grants…

C@tmomma, so you didn’t have to, I looked at that article. I think the photo says it all:

In the article itself, though, the only ‘protester’ who asked us to ‘think of the whales’ was this man:

This guy just screams ‘Coalition campaigner’. Probably out of gratitude to them for what he was able to gouge out of Jobkeeper. 😉

Needless to say, his involvement in this ‘campaign’ is not at all about his whale-watching eco-tourism business. 😉

    Astroturfed groups. Liberal Party.

This stuff has already been debunked by honest scientists.

  6. Why should the people of Gippsland, and ordinary Australian households have to pay the costs of climate breakdown caused by the fossil fuel industry!?We urgently need a Climate Disaster Levy on fossil fuel companies. https://t.co/zlPFDEjqAe— Mark Ogge (@MarkOgge) October 5, 2023

Well of course there should be a climate disaster levy imposed.

Sadly though the Fed Labor Govt is corrupted by fossil fuel donations and investments.

I have extensive experience with Hezbollah practically and academically. I’d be surprised if they didn’t enter the fray in some manner frankly. Hassan Nasrullah is a canny leader and even the Israelis haven’t been able to pin him down yet over 30 years. His fingerprints will be found somewhere in this situation imo.

  9. It’s always about the bloody ‘vibrations’. It used to be the ‘vibrations’ from land-based wind turbines that was the bogeyman. Until extensive scientific research completely debunked it. Now, all of a sudden, it’s ‘vibrations’ in the water that are going to cause the end of life on earth, well in Port Stephens, as we know it! Have any of them heard about waves? They ARE ‘vibrations’ in the water!

  10. If he were to be posting again, I wonder what Already Enough would have to say about the current outbreak of hostilities in the ME(?).

Posting images is easy, once you know how.

    1. Avoid any base64 image addresses. They’ll never come out.
    2. make sure your image ends in .png .jpeg or .jpg and it should post here successfully. Some image addresses look like they’ll post like that but I always add #image.jpg just in case they don’t.

Agreed, fingers crossed, there are already too many fingers in this pie and the outcome will be a disaster without additional external military assistance.

  18. I’m a touch suspicious at the ability of Hamas to do this without Israeli intelligence seeing it coming. There’s people in Israel who would see it as justified to allow Hamas to do this for the PR value (and to justify crushing the shit out of them in retaliation), as Hamas’ lack of success in recent years in killing civilians despite their intent to do so has often been used by naive Western advocates who compare kill numbers for the Israelis vs Hamas.

Showing all the signs of extensive if misguided planning. With all of Israel’s intelligence technology, how was such a substantial attack not seen, uncovered and prevented?

  21. There is no way that such a build up would have gone unnoticed by Israel in the past. Someone has really dropped the ball on this one. This is an intelligence failure on the scale of the September 11 attacks in America.

  22. The scope of Hamas’ attack today upon Israel, as announced by the IDF:

“Militants from Hamas entered Israel from Gaza by land, by sea and by air using paragliders, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman DF spokesperson Lt Col Richard Hecht said at a briefing on Saturday.

Hecht said fighting on the ground is taking place in the following places:

    Erez Crossing
    Nahal Oz
    Magen
    Kibbutz Beeri
    Rehim Army Base
    Ziikim Army base
    Kfar Azz

Hecht declined to answer repeated questions from journalists about whether the IDF had advance intelligence that the attack was coming.”

    https://edition.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/al-aqsa-storm-militants-infiltrate-israel-after-gaza-rockets-10-07-intl-hnk/index.html

That last question is definitely a curly one for the IDF to try to answer.

Quite plausible as the leadership cupboard is bare, odious creature that she is. Though she’d likely put a lot of old LNP noses out of joint.

I saw that, too. I mean, since when do you get any sense out of a bunch of yobbos at a pub, anyway!?! They aren’t the epitome of the Everyman. You would probably find them at a coffee shop these days, or a market on a Saturday. Honestly, the ABC is disappearing up its own fundament!

  29. Thanks Vic. I’m feeling quite depressed about the referendum.

Something that should be unifying our country has been taken up by bad actors in the Liberal and National parties as an opportunity to divide us.

They should feel ashamed of themselves.

‘Say no to division. Vote Yes!’ 🙂

And that’s the thing. The REAL division lies in the fact that Aboriginal people experience such stark disparities in just about every soci0-economic and health indicator compared with the rest of Australia.

The division already exists. The Voice is an attempt to try to overcome it.

  33. Israels’s channel 13 is reporting that 7 communities are under Hamas control.

These are close to the border, scattered along the perimeter the Gaza Strip, so it would be a Gaza-wide operation.

Israel will win, of course, but as a previous poster says, it will get ugly before then. Probably after as well.

  34. https://m.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-762037

The comment that Israeli intelligence has dropped the ball extends to the Israeli air defence.

They have the Iron Dome system, which is alleged to be better than the US Patriot air defence being used in Ukraine. Yet Hamas appear to have fired 100s of rockets with no interceptions whatsoever.

And preparedness of the military to defend the contested borders.

So much for Netanyahu’s tough talk.

  35. Cronus, this just in:

    “Concerns about the north

An unnamed Israeli minister has told Ynet that there is a risk the Hamas attacks could be designed to distract ahead of an attack from the north.

In the meantime, Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said that it is “in direct contact with the leadership of the Palestinian Resistance and is conducting a continuous assessment of events and the progress of operations with it.””
