Miscellany: Fadden by-election, Liberal and Greens candidate selection (open thread)

A date set for the Fadden by-election, and an LNP candidate soon to be as well — along with a Liberal successor to the late Jim Molan in the Senate.

Before we proceed to a brief summary of electorally relevant current events in federal politics, please note the other quality content that it’s pushing down the order: a guest post from Adrian Beaumont on the threat of US debt default and other international events, a post on a Tasmanian poll with a summary of recent events in that state, and a detailed analysis of results from last year’s federal election in thirteen seats in inner Melbourne.

• The Fadden by-election has been set for July 25, with nominations to close on June 23. As was covered in the previous post, a Liberal National Party preselection that has attracted five nominees will be conducted today. Phillip Coorey of the Financial Review reports that Anthony Albanese would rather Labor forfeit the by-election for a seat the LNP holds on a 10.6% margin, but must reckon with a local branch “agitating to run a candidate”.

• The New South Wales Liberal Party will hold its preselection this weekend to fill the Senate vacancy resulting from the death of Jim Molan in January. The field have candidates has narrowed to three: former state Transport Minister Andrew Constance, former state party president Maria Kovacic and Space Industry Association chief executive James Brown. The Sydney Morning Herald reports the latter has a long list of high-profile backers including John Howard, Julie Bishop and Dave Sharma.

• The Byron Shire Echo reports comedian Mandy Nolan will again run as the Greens candidate for the Byron Bay and Tweed Heads region seat of Richmond at the next federal election. Nolan added 5.0% to the party’s primary vote share last May to outpoll the Nationals, although preferences from right-wing minor parties pushed the Nationals candidate ahead of her at the final exclusion.

  1. What on earth are NSW Police thinking rolling out new Tasers WITHOUT integrated cameras?! Honestly could not have picked a worse time to enact something like this if they tried. pic.twitter.com/8LibSoheaE— David Shoebridge (@DavidShoebridge) May 30, 2023

Minns should be picking up the phone to his Police Minister to fix this ASAP.

  2. “I did consider whether I might refer myself to some of my predecessors. But quite frankly, with the level of emotion and unintentional and also intentional disinformation about this issue, I quite frankly, didn’t want to give them that pain.”

That’s one of those answers that doesn’t pass the smell test. Campbell knows full well that the pressure of responsibility and accountability weighs heaviest at the top. If he had even the slightest inkling of what was happening during his tenure then he bears some degree of command responsibility.

Imo, he should at least offer certain awards earned during his tenure to Marles and let him make the final decision. Also, given the accounts we’re aware of alleging atrocities, his performance as Commander in Afghanistan should be subject to close scrutiny by a mixed panel including a legal, political and military expert.

  3. BSF: ” I think a royal commission into the use of Consulting firms could be a serious possibility.”

Won’t Haines have already figured this out? I don’t know man… she looked like she was “laser-focused” on the actions of lawyers from what I remember. The complete lack of ethics was a feature, not a bug.

  4. “It’s OK to vote No and still remain part of the national effort to help your
Indigenous brothers and sisters, as you look on with anguish at what is
happening in their communities,” Ms Ley told the House of Representatives on Tuesday night.”

Notwithstanding the obvious contradiction, Ley must’ve been living in a cave for the nine years the Coalition were in power doing …………..nothing.

  5. Rex and Nath seem to operate in tandem, today’s speculation about Bill Shorten’s future was a good example of this.

  6. I predict the “Voice” will more than comfortably get up – a majority seemingly having tired of the likes of Abbott’s, Morrison’s, and Dutton’s trash talk, evidenced by polling, after they’ve thrown everything at it bar the proverbial, and in the absence of the “Yes” case having been fully agitated.

Although I haven’t had the advantage of reading the transcripts of Roberts-Smith’s defamation trial, I’ve observed enough to persuade me that based on the civil onus, he won’t be celebrating on Thursday, his argument that the witnesses for the respondents are consumed with jealously not even passing the pub test. That said, the top army brass has questions to answer:

Do you think she is the only person on this board to do that? I have done it, so what? So that gives carte blanche to post right wing crap. I think you are the fool, ole AAF Upnorth. Plus you are confusing me with somebodu else… someone who cares what you think.

  8. Plus AAF Upnorth, I dont think I called her a Red Tory. I called Keith Starmer one. I did say that is probably why she likes him. Either you have very limited comprehension skills, or that was a big Freudian slip. It could even be both. You idiot!

    Oo, nasty boy. 😆

Fyi, Democratic Socialist stooge, Upnorth has done more in politics and for the advancement of the Left in our nation than you and your nasty little Victorian cabal of Right On, Comrade! Communist Cosplayers will ever do. We see you for what you are, clem attlee. A nasty little pipsqueak nothingburger.

Thanks for asking, I have a close friend in the CPA and my grandfather was in the CPA. I fight Tories. You are full of piss and wind.

  10. I’m glad that Cook has become the WA premier. If there were two or more candidates, it’s my understanding that the process would take weeks to resolve. I think, however, that the reason(s) McGowan left office early is not only based on “exhaustion”.

  11. Ya know… sometimes when people bring up the big propeller/ bird danger dynamic in the discussion about windpower, I can l’t help but think “They’re birds ffs. aka dinosaurs. They’ll do ok. They’ll last us out.”

I know it’s bad thinking that.

Ha, ha and people deny that this clown is not of the Grouper ilk, when here she is using all the Tory and Grouper memes. The gift that keeps on giving. Come on Cat crank, post something else.

  14. Yeah good ole Cat, Labor to her boot straps who err, supports a guy who directs Labour councils to go into coalition with Tories. “She fights Tories.” Priceless! BTW, self regard is no recommendation.

  16. “ Campbell said his honours had been reviewed in the same way as any other commander during the relevant period and stressed that the removal of any medals did not mean the commanders had committed any crimes.”

Again this is a form of chicanery by Campbell. Senior officers have never been accused of committing crimes, the issue is of knowing of serious allegations of crimes but not taking appropriate action. They are not only accountable for their actions but in certain circumstances, their inaction.

    You are a sad case.

Life’s too short to read any more of your drivel. And so I’m thankfully leaving you to your own devices from now on. I’m sure you’re impressing … yourself. 😐

…why are people who have never expressed the slightest interest in wildlife or the environment more generally, except as somewhere to mine, dam or otherwise “develop”, suddenly so concerned about the fate of the blue-crested hoopoe?

  19. The four First Nations families are destined for the human rights commission after the AFL’s independent investigation into the Hawthorn racism saga was wound up on Tuesday. The families have agreed there will be no adverse finding against the AFL and Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan and Jason Burt. The AFL has called a last-minute late-night press conference as its independent investigation into the Hawthorn racism scandal hits crisis point. League boss Gillon McLachlan is set to front media at 7.45pm tonight, with the press conference only called at 7.04pm.

What 24 Indigenous Nations out of the 200 plus will be represented in the Voice, and what happens to the remaining ones?
Is it a rotational system, with 12 month terms?
Will they become party affiliated once moving to Canberra?
Will the selection be based on % of Aboriginality, age, gender, language proficiency in an Indigenous dialect?
Will selection be based on expertise in particular portfolios like health or education?
What are the grounds for removal or replacement as a member of the Voice?
Will the 24 members be evenly dispersed across states, regions or regions evenly between city/urban areas?
Can the PM, Premier or Parliament veto any appointments?
Why is this option better than a 3rd chamber or fixed membership like the Māori in the NZ Parliament?

Would be good to get some clarity on the above

Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble….Roll on Thanksgiving!

  22. How many other posters on here, think it would be a good idea for Labor administrations to go into coalition with Tories? It would be an interesting thing to see. National administrations in times of emergency don’t count.

    Me, under no circumstances.

  23. C@t, instead of posting endlessly telling everyone that you wont be bothering responding to them anymore, why dont you just not respond at all. It could be a good start for you to make good on your promises to ignore various posters that you post about endlessly. Start with me. But then keep going. I reckon you will find you will be posting less as well which would be a real positive for you.

Refusal to attend mediation/truth-telling = no findings against Clarko Fagan Burt.

    Neatly wrapped up by Gill.

  25. The less I say about what I think of Keir Starmer the better I think it will be for the harmony of this board. Let’s just say I think he is a very lucky man to have the Tories shit the bed so badly in the last year.

  26. rhwombat:

The irony of that comment is that there is plenty of clarity around if the person could be bothered to go looking for it.

Thanks Rex, that is a shocker! If Albo was looking for an excuse to turf some senior AFP people this is it. Well done David Shoebridge for extracting this fact.

And what was former 2018 AG… Christian Porter… doing about it??

    Me, under no circumstances.

The only time would be if the alternative was to be in Coalition with a far right party and, even then, I think the priority should be to go back to the polls as soon as is reasonable to try and get a more stable parliamentary make-up.

I got it precisely right, nath. Thanks for your honesty.

  30. ”How many other posters on here, think it would be a good idea for Labor administrations to go into coalition with Tories? It would be an interesting thing to see. National administrations in times of emergency don’t count.”

Extremely unlikely to be acceptable to either side while something like the current political landscape endures.

But the future – who knows?

Maybe the “Liberals” split into a Centre Right party and a hard Right group who merge with the Nationals, One Nation and NewsCorp to form a strong Far Right populist party. In some circumstances a grand coalition of the Centre might be both viable and desirable to keep extremists out of power.

  31. Sprocket – Leaving the trading block with your largest trading partners in the hope of doing a bit more trade with some far off lands that you once had a connection with has not paid off? Who’d ‘ave funk that?

The British government use of a referendum for Brexit shows the flaws of using a single vote to make major policy decision when there are no details. Also Brexit won 52-48, so the victory was hardly overwhelming…..
I know the supporters of Scottish Independence here are going to hate it but equally a win of 52 for Independence without the details of the cost and potential outcomes should not be used to make a country independent.

  32. The British voted for Brexit in 2016 on the basis of a general discontent with the status quo, vague promises and outright lies. Now there’s a referendum where the voters did need more detail. That plus a second referendum in 2019 to accept the deal made with the EU.

But no, from 2016 the British were to be railroaded into Brexit regardless of any reservations.
