Essential Research: PM favourability and China relationship (open thread)

Another poll finding little change in perceptions of the Prime Minister, despite a deteriorating view of the national direction.

The latest Essential Research survey has its monthly favourability trend ratings for Anthony Albanese which, as distinct from its straightforward approval/disapproval question, asks respondents to rate his performance on a scale of one to ten. This finds 46% giving him from seven to ten, up one on a month ago; 26% from four to six, down two; and 23% from zero to three, up three. On the question of national direction, 44% rate that Australia is on the right track, down two on a month ago and four on two months ago, compared with 36% for the wrong track, up two on a month ago and seven on two months ago.

Other questions relate to Australia’s relationship with China, which 46% expect to be better under the Labor government compared with only 9% for worse. Asked whether they wanted the government to look for opportunities to rebuild relations with China, take a more confrontational approach or maintain the current course, 54% opted for the first (up two from May), 13% the second (down six) and 12% the third (steady). Forty-four per cent think the AUKUS submarine partnership will make Australia more secure compared with 16% for less secure and 39% for about the same.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1042. Note that progressively updated coverage of the Victorian election count continues on the post below.

  1. Two bob each way, Bobby Katter.
Bob has eyes only for the next election, the Katter dynasty, his hat and his own reflection.
Bob can’t get into any trouble sticking up for the martyr in his time of need, get a whirl on the tele and head home the glorious victor again.

    [‘Mavis,
Am I correct in thinking Katter is supporting Morrison? I got lost somewhere in his address.’]

I think so. We’ll know when the vote is taken.

Ohhhhhhhhh. No no. I love a good story (which is why I tell my stories over and over). Dont be shy.

I will just tell it to myself again then from what I can remember of you last telling it – and embellish it as I see fit.

I could tell you the story about the time I had a conversation with Robert Smith after a Cure gig at Macquarie Uni if you like? 🙂

In my mind, this conversation happened in a spa bath.

  4. Classic narcissist in action.
I have seen them cut a destructive swathe through organizations before.
I am grateful that this particular narcissist chose to take the Coalition down with them.
God had better watch their back.

  6. Two messages can be read from The Global Times.

The first is that the containment of the pandemic in China is in increasing trouble – albeit at a low level considering the total population.

The second is that various underlings are being used to signal a reduction in the dracon measures.

    Who, Xi?
    Not me!

The EA to my PhD supervisor claimed to have shared a hot tub with the lads from The Cure back in the day.

    “Perfect gentlemen,” she said.

  8. I have heard that Olivia Newton John was supposed to be in the Village People movie but pulled out because of the partly revealing spa bath scene.

    No wonder PTSD is endemic.

    Albanese comprehensively dismembering Morrison.
The Coalition has missed a huge opportunity here to put clean air between itself and Morrison.

The Coalition knows exactly what they are doing with this censure motion and it has little to do with Morrison or his past behaviour. It is pure and simple; they do not want the sort of thing Morrison did to be censured because they want to be able to do it again whenever it suits them. Rules, norms and good sound practice of governance should not apply to them.

They are not protecting Morrison or their brand, they are protecting what they see as their right. The ALP in moving this motion, are less attacking the Liberals and Morrison and more setting a standard, a bar that they will have to follow. Had the Liberals voted for it, it gives them a free swing on any slightly dodgy stuff the ALP may do. Shame.

As for Litterproud and the Voice, this has Canavans name on it imo.

  13. NAB boss disappointed as bank loses vote on 5pc pay rises

National Australia Bank has failed to win staff support for its offer to increase wages by between 3 per cent and 5 per cent, after ending negotiations with the Finance Sector Union and putting the deal directly to its employees.

Of the bank’s 29,000 eligible staff members, 84 per cent participated in the vote.

NAB boss disappointed as bank loses vote on 5pc pay rises

No doubt they are, all the spare cash went to chaps like their boss cocky.

The NAB CEO, Ross McEwan, received the biggest pay rise in percentage terms among the group, with the total value of his remuneration rocketing almost 130% from $2.31m to $5.29m.

  15. I doubt that Archer would resign from the Liberal Party. Having the resources of a major party behind you at election time would be attractive, and she is unlikely to for forced out because her seat has a good chance of changing sides. Her margin is not that great from memory.

  16. The Morrison government was a disgraceful mishmash of incompetence and exaggerated egos.
The Morrison government was flogged by their own kind at the last federal election.
Almost all of the Morrison government are in denial even after the public reminder given in the recent Victorian election.
There is an attempt in Parliament for some members to salvage some credibility from the absolute disaster that was Morrison as PM and the pathetic non-attempt to disarm Morrison as the disaster was unfolding.
    The boat has sailed.
The remnant Morrison government ministers are “rubbing more shit” over “the old shit’ when they should be just “cleaning the shit off”.
Morrison set you (the remnants) back ten years and you’re ( the remnants) setting the fact in stone.

  17. Archer staying in the Liberal party is great. It is a reminder that there is actually no excuse for Liberal MPs to be voting like they are. You can be a Liberal MP and not be a d/head. Being a d/head is a choice they make, not one forced on them by affiliation.

  18. October inflation lower than forecast, shares turn higher

The monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicator rose 6.9 per cent in the year to October 2022, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Michelle Marquardt, ABS Head of Prices Statistics, said “This month’s annual movement of 6.9 per cent is lower than the 7.3 per cent movement in September, however CPI inflation remains high.

“Annually, prices for fruit and vegetables rose by 9.4 per cent in October, down from 17.4 per cent in September,” the ABS said.

The sharemarket has swung into the black on the news to be up 0.05 per cent.

Remember he’s Leak the Younger, slipped straight into Daddy Bill’s job not too long ago.
Johannes’ style very much in his fathers’ style

Although now and again Bill would surprise with toons like this one back in the day.’

  20. Took a while for something that is essentially a picture; painted. Not surprising considering he inherited his cartoon career and has no real experience in portraits like this. But… well…. considering what it is for – good enough.

  21. The Liberal Party is on the wrong side of history, again, over the Morrison censure motion. Despite advanced warning, Morrison didn’t even offer a serious defense of his own behaviour. Did he care?

Even the more right wing independents, like Cheney and Haines, voted for it.

  22. Johannes Leak produced a competent portrait of Tony Abbott in the way that he wanted to be represented. It will sit (comfortably?) between Julia Gillard and Malcolm Turnbull for… decades? Longer?

Actually, Leak’s cartoon this morning was above his usual standard, showing a bit of wit, even if I disagreed with the views expressed.
