Essential Research leadership ratings

Essential’s latest leadership ratings find Scott Morrison continuing to struggle, despite being back to level pegging on preferred prime minister.

The Guardian reports on yet another fortnightly Essential Research poll with no voting intention numbers, but we does at least get the monthly leadership ratings. These show Scott Morrison down a point on approval to 39% and steady on disapproval at 52%, after the previous poll respectively had him down five and up nine. Anthony Albanese is respectively down two to 41% and up one to 31%, and he has lost his 39-36 lead as preferred prime minister, with the two now tied on 36%. The BludgerTrack trends on the sidebar have now been updated with these results.

Further questions on bushfire recovery, sports rorts and coronavirus don’t seem to have turned up anything too mindblowing, but the publication of the full report may turn up something hopefully later today.

UPDATE: Full report here. The most interesting of the supplementary findings for mine relate to the budget surplus, the consistent theme of which is that respondents aren’t that fussed about it: 79% agree spending on bushfire recovery is more important than maintaining it, with 11% disagreeing; 65% say it would be understandable if the coronavirus impact meant it wasn’t achieved, with 18% disagreeing; and 57% agree it was wrong for the government to discuss the surplus in the present tense before the election, with 24% disagreeing.

  1. I get links to a newsletter that includes a review for EA members of the engineering job market. Despite the attempt at positive spin, it is not good.
    https://www.createdigital.org.au/trends-engineering-job-vacancies-show-profession-survive-downturn/?utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EDM-20200213

People here might find these bits interesting:
“Advertised vacancies in Australia were trending down throughout 2019 overall, but the end of 2019 saw a slight recovery. The downward trend reflects the slowing down of the Australian and global economy during 2018-19.”

    And
““The data shows that the demand for civil engineers is consistent in all states and territories, except WA and the ACT.”

“Unfortunately, the report shows that there is less opportunity for chemical, materials and telecommunications engineering jobs. ”

    The full report is here

So much for that infrastructure revolution. In my experience EA does not effectively represent the engineering workforce, despite it having over 100,000 members, more than twice the size of the coal industry. This is because EA also includes employer members, which compromises it when arguing about wages and conditions. If only the union movement offered a credible alternative. I tried union membership as an engineer several times and each time was disappointed by the total lack of communication and advocacy within my profession. A huge opportunity lost.

But, to me, the hypocritical efforts of yourself – one of the site’s biggest haters – accusing others of the same sin, are truly laughable.

  3. A second report of the Otis group (pro-Coal) in Labor being a reality. If true, what unbelievable arrogance and disloyalty, to publicly flout policy and exclude the leader. Why can’t Farrell be content with having destroyed two earlier Labor governments? Now he wants to kill one before it is born. No wonder Rudd and Gillard had so much trouble getting a carbon price up.

I nominate Farrell for the inaugural Menzies – Murdoch Medal, for advancing the Liberal party.

I’m trying vinegar at the moment. I have a “control toe” and a “vinegar toe”.

So far, fresh new pink nail is growing on the “vinegar” toe. But it’s a long process: months.

  7. Well, Ged’s not interested in questions on climate change, so with Mark Butler obviously gagged by the OTIS group I guess another week rolls by with Labor not interested in climate change. The parliament is corrupted.

I haven’t joined to find out what they are like, one set of fees is enough.

    http://www.professionalengineers.org.au/

But I get the impression that this is the organization engineers should be joining.

EA wants to pretend it isn’t a union and when it comes to representing employed engineers has lost the plot ( in my view).

You know in Rugby when there’s a scrum and the team throwing the ball in is supposed to throw it in the middle and actually throws it directly at the legs of his/her own team mates?

I give you the independence of the Speaker. #qt #auspol

  10. I know it was linked before, but here is FDOTM’s contribution to the Guardian today:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/feb/13/it-turns-out-scott-morrison-and-his-friends-can-do-whatever-they-like-what-a-shock

If anyone cares about why Morrison and his corrupt mates can get away with (actual) murder (especially in regard to asylum seekers and robodebt victims) they need look no further than the obsessive coterie of Labor haters on this site and their overriding obsession with having a go at Labor.

And on cue, the Nationals go on about Otis (Otis???) and the clown posse here jump at their command.

  11. Rex and Peg are never shy of talking about coal.

But there is something that they are very, very shy about.

Their 17 tons a year CO2 emissions. Second highest per capita in the world.

Yes, folks, one million Australian Greens voters emit more than 20 million Indian poor urbanites!

Here is something that Rex and Peg can do that is real and positive: stop drinking their 3 lattes a day. That is 1 kg of CO2 emissions saved a day. That is 365 kgs of emissions less per Greens voters. As long as Peg and Rex switch to water.

But with the sort of unerring hatred that Peg and Rex have for non inner urbs very wealthy knowledge industry workers, they would rather sack coal and timber and farm workers than take even the slightest hit to their own amenity.

They DO have a policy conundrum. Their intention to foist gig economy barista status on timber and coal workers can hardly be kosher if three lattes a day emits 1kg of CO2 emissions!

    Comrades, some policy coherence, please!

  12. frednk @ #1268 Thursday, February 13th, 2020 – 2:33 pm

Rex it’s the greens that do useless climate change stunts, has it happened yet or isn’t Bandt up-to it?

So, you’re essentially saying it’s solely the Greens’ job to hold the Govt to account on climate change ?

You’re fine with Labor being mute on climate change – is that what you’re saying ??

Perhaps my experiences here in SA have been different to other states, but I am aware of the Professionals (the renamed old APESMA) and was once a member of both them and EA. I found them of no help at all, even when public sector departments full of engineers were getting massively restructured. Professional Engineers are virtually non-existent in SA in my experience.

  14. I wrote that post about toes just for you, nath.

Glad to see you read it and let me know my come-in-spinner trick worked. It was pretty childish of me, actually, hence I knew a child like you would take the bait.

If truth be known foot fungus and fungal infected toenails are pretty common. Almost inevitable, especially in humid area, such as coastal communities.

It’s fairly typical of you that you would attempt to shame someone for a minor health condition that they are attempting to treat.

You appear to have few boundaries when it comes to acting out the role of a pathetic troll.

BB believes he has “got the wit” while no one else has.

A few days ago I had a long conversation with a local councillor who was going to the Box Hill market for some cheap meats to support the businesses there as trade has dropped off dramatically.

Currently, we have engaged lawyers located in Box Hill and have had to go to their office over the last couple of days. The amount of money they charge per hour in six minute blocks!

While we were at it we decided to check out any changes in the market and food courts, as well as drop off in trade.

I have friends and acquaintances who refuse to go to the Box Hill area precisely because they are racist. We enjoy going there because we embrace diversity of cultures and people.

So, shoot me if I refuse to become hysterical and hyperbolic about the virus and the probability of catching it.

  16. Speaker backs up Slimy Stuart by protesting that he can’t be expected to have precise figures available on Robodebt (Q by Shorten).

I thought that was the sort of Q that used to be answered “I’ll find out for you”.

The Otis Restaurant in Kingston ACT owes @vanOnselenP a huge debt for an incalculable amount of free publicity. The curious thing is the said restaurant has no booths or private rooms to hide in. Oh and it lists wine from Don Farrell’s winery.

About a century ago Earle Page and a bunch of other country independents banded together and formed the Country Party.

Perhaps if the Nationals disappeared we might get some quality independents representing regional Australia. And perhaps they could form a new political party.

That political party could perhaps be called the Country Party, to signify that it represents *all* the people of regional Australia, not just the coal miners and coal seam gas brigade.

  24. BB believes he has “got the wit” while no one else has.

So, shoot me if I refuse to become hysterical and hyperbolic about the virus and the probability of catching it.

Typical of a self-professed, virtue-signalling saint like Pegasus to chime in.

Presumably the governments (including the Chinese government) that have enforced lockdowns, isolations, and travel bans on literally millions of people in dozens of cities all over the world are also “hysterical” in their actions.

And it must be “hyperbole” to instruct those on aircraft, ships and in confinement to change their P2 masks every hour because, as we all know, there is absolutely no danger of catching COVID-19 from airborne droplets.

And all those Chinese people wearing masks ad they walk down, not just the streets of Wuhan, but every other city in China: what “racists” they must be… against the Chinese!

They should be like the sanctimonious (but dopey) Pegasus: proudly exposing their airways to possible infection just to show their wokeness, and their solidarity with the Chinese of Box Hill.

But why Box Hill, Horsey? It couldn’t be because that’s where there are a lot of Chinese people, could it? You’re blind to race, aren’t you? How could you spot Chinese people with such poor eyesight?

Actually you’re one of the more dangerous do-gooders around the place. You go and deliberately expose yourself to potential infection so that you can show off your purity. Then you return from your saintly shopping and come back into a society where you’re indistinguishable from everybody else (besides having your head up your arse, that is) and spread the disease.

This is how COVID19 really will turn into a pandemic, if we’re not too careful: by idiotic virtue signallers convincing themselces that valour is the better part of discretion, thus opening up the risk of infecting us all when they return to brag about how wonderful and non-judgemental they truly are.
