Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

A bad Newspoll for the Liberals, made worse by a sharp deterioration in Scott Morrison’s personal ratings.

The latest Newspoll has Labor’s lead up again after a period of moderating results since the leadership upheaval, the two-party lead now at 54-46, compared with 53-47 in the poll a fortnight ago. Labor is up a point on the primary vote to 39%, while the Coalition is down one to 36%, the Greens are down two to 9%, and One Nation are steady on 6%. Still more worrying for the Liberals is a reversal of the tide in favour of Scott Morrison, who records his first net negative personal ratings to date, with approval down four to 41% and disapproval up six to 44%. Bill Shorten is respectively up two to 37% and down one to 50%, and his deficit as preferred prime minister has narrowed from 45-34 to 43-35. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1646.

  1. Conservative writer Max Boot lays into FOX …… calling to advertisers to boycott them out of their vile existence

“If Murdoch and his sons won’t rein in its extremist propaganda, advertisers should flee Fox, and investors should flee its parent company, News Corp. Its stock should become as toxic as shares of mining companies that produce “blood diamonds.”

The propagandists and politicians who are radicalizing the American right must not be allowed to escape responsibility for the dangerous consequences of their actions.

And after that , more fun.

Greg Sheridan was right! About Julie Bishop that is…
Julie Bishop stuffed up Treasury, and now she’s stuffed up Foreign Affairs

So she was hidden in Foreign Affairs, where usually only Greg Sheridan actually notices if you stuff up. In fact the principle task of a Coalition foreign affairs spokesperson, either in Government or Opposition, is simple: keep The Australian happy, which means pretty much keeping Greg Sheridan and Paul Kelly happy. Problem was, she did stuff up, and Greg Sheridan noticed. In August, in the sort of language Sheridan usually reserved for the limp-wristed shillyshalling foreign policy Leftariat, he excoriated her…

  3. The deeper the Abbott and Turnbull Governments dropped into the US/Israel pockets, the more Sheridan changed his views about Bishop as Foreign Affairs Minister.

  4. I can only report on what I heard, or in this case, didn’t hear on Sydney radio news and AM. Dick head.

Adrian, the dickhead is you. You tune in, they’re not reporting on exactly what you want them to be reporting on, and you rush here to clog up the thread with the same old stupid bullshit. Which you can do if you must, but Barney is right to laugh and you, and you don’t get to abuse him in response.

Donald Grey Triplett was the first person to be diagnosed with autism. The fulfilling life he has led offers an important lesson for today, John Donvan and Caren Zucker write.

    What a great story.
I will pass it on to my Nephew for his son – who is on the spectrum and high functioning – which does not mean without many difficulties.

the most predictable thing in this world is that after every newspoll adrian will be along the following morning whinging about how the ABC doesn’t report it – even though they always do.

I do hope @ScottMorrisonMP makes another of those hokey videos where he talks to voters like they’re ‘fair dinkum’ morons because it’s working a treat. #newspoll

  8. For the gardening page.

I have a collection of pots with various bulbs – including some magnificent lilies on a little porch.

Shown with the wrinkled hand are some (damned if I knows). My FD, who is a florist does not know either.

If anybody can help. I will be glad to send a pack of my wrinkle cream as a presento. It works a treat* does a great job as can be seen.

    Thank you.

*Works a treat – becoming overused.

  9. Morrison is trying to do an impersonation of Trump and the way he goes on.The trouble is that most Aussies hate Trump and have more brains to vote for anyone other than Trump.Hes barking up the wrong tree if he thinks a few baseball hat wearing press conferences and a bit of shouting now and again is going to win him an election. Pillock!

  10. Many cars have been left along Nauru’s roads and in backyards. With an unemployment rate of around 90 percent, much of the population is dependent on government handouts, which are increasingly unaffordable with the decline of the phosphate industry.

    Mike Carlton @MikeCarlton01
Nauru is a barren shit heap.

Just my opinion. Australia’s treatment of Nauru amounts to blackmail.

The economy of Nauru is tiny, based on a population in 2014 of only 11,000 people.[3] The economy is primarily based on phosphate mining, offshore banking, and processing of coconut products. Mining of phosphate ceased after the exhaustion of the primary phosphate reserves, but in 2006–07 mining of a deeper layer of “secondary phosphate” began. It is hoped that this economic activity might lift Nauru from the bottom rung of global GDP per capita. The only other major source of government revenue is sale of fishing rights in Nauru’s territorial waters.

Nauru is dependent on foreign aid, chiefly from Australia, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Nauru ranks 72nd in the world by nominal GDP per capita (8,575 US$). The top 10 countries by GDP (nominal) per capita are: Luxembourg, Switzerland, Macau, Norway, Ireland, Iceland, Qatar, United States, Singapore, Denmark, Australia.

  12. KayJay,

They look like wild onions to me, but I’m not certain. If you crush a leaf in your fingers and they smell onoiny, that would be a clue.

  13. Tony Abbott’s such a kind hearted individual isn’t he.

And to think Rudd tore down a progressive Govt allowing this person clear path to the Lodge to destruct this nations values.

    Sickening.

  14. Wow! 35 members of the NSW Young Nationals have been identified by an internal review of having links to the Far Right/Alt Right. They had been employed in Nats MPs’ offices, on committees and the executive, and were engaging in creating motions to push the far Right agenda plus constantly starting conversations within the party in order to influence others.

These people are a cancer on society and need to be silenced.

Australians aren’t idiots. Our bs meters are finely-tuned.

  16. KayJay, nice hibiscus.

My silky oak is flowering madly this year. I’ll see if I can manage to post a photo.

The bottlebrush have also been spectacular but the rain knocked them about unfortunately.

Really happy to see some rare visitors to my neck of the wood. Eastern Rosellas.

  17. From Lizzies Dawn Patrol re the 1/3 of foreign workers getting less than 50% of the award wages . I noticed this………..

the survey also found large-scale wage theft was worst in fruit and vegetable-picking and farm work, where 15% of workers earned $5 an hour or less. Almost a third (31%) earned $10 an hour or less

I wonder how many of these thieving farming bustards are also putting their hand out for drought relief from the taxpayers and when they have a spare moment also stealing water from the MD system ?

There is a bottlebrush on the footpath – which the Rosellas love. The rain has scattered the brush abut and the concrete footpath is a nice display.

Back to Onion Weed disposal. Thank you.

Yes, the plume trade was a disaster. But it’s difficult to persuade people of lawlessness when they find a feather in the bush and stick it in their hat. They just laugh.

True. Rangers politely look the other way. It is when Mammon enters the field that people start killing birds for their feathers.

  21. Aunt Mavis,
Yes the reporter who did the investigation was interviewed again as a result of the Nationals investigation and the actions which have been taken by them. No wonder the Conservatives want to get rid of the ABC! 🙂

  22. BW I think every novice gardener seeing the onion weed flower for the first time goes og what a pretty flower.

Hey @samkerr1 that is the same Morrison who gave $30m to Murdoch’s FOXTEL so women’s sport is hidden behind a $ubscriber network. He can hardly claim to be for women in sport when he refused to fund ABC and women’s sports coverage

  24. Australian Story Hope Springs
    8:01PM – 8:32PM

For over a decade, this program has followed farmer Peter Andrews and his controversial methods to drought-proof the land. During one of the worst droughts in memory, the results at Mulloon Creek are giving cause for hope.

If this is the guy I think it is, this will be interesting. I was wondering when someone would look at his land in drought.

(And as Boerwar just wrote, it is only a weed if you think it is.)

  25. I have to say this, the Alt Reich in America are conscientious in the pursuit of their White Supremacy goals. My son, who follows some of them on Twitter, purely for research and information purposes, showed me a post one of them made during the heat of the pipe bomb scare. So, in order to gee up the people who follow these malevolent malcontents, and to foster the ‘false flag’ meme, he had doctored a photo of one of the pipe bombs, the one to John Brennan, to make it seem like it was a photo of Donald Trump on the bomb. The person also calls himself a ‘Christian’. What a perversion of both Conservatism and Christianity. The product of some very sick but intelligent minds though.

  26. The silence of the ABC today on Newspoll is quite noticeable. Even my mum commented on this unprompted. She listens to the ABC constantly.

It feels like social security and increasing poverty is going to be a big federal election issue if the current exchange with Hon Paul Fletcher is anything to go by #ACOSSConf2018

  28. You know, it may be a good thing if the ABC doesn’t mention Newspoll too much. It might scare people back to the Coalition if they feel sorry for them! 😉

  29. When Turnbull convinced Trump to honour the agreement made with thr Obama administration and take up to 1200 genuine refugees marooned on Manus and Nauru, I think the ALP leadership did not oppose the deal.
I assume they are still in lock step with Morrison, and still talking with Morrison, about the NZ offer.
I remember Kevin’s full page ads telling us that under his ALP Government, boat people would never ever settle here.
Not much has changed. The Coalition and the ALP remain in that same lock step.
    It’s a pity.

  30. Confessions

This very day Ms McGowan did a rather long interview with s Kelly on Radio National, a bit after 8.45am.

It was quite a comprehensive interview covering a range of currently salient policy matters, about which she explained clearly where she stands.
