BludgerTrack: 52.4-47.6 to Labor

Essential Research’s recent results have driven an improvement in the Coalition’s poll trend position, most evidently in Victoria.

The BludgerTrack poll aggregate records a further narrowing in Labor’s lead this week on the back of weaker numbers from Essential Research, which provide the only new data point other than the Galaxy poll from Western Australia, which has no bearing on the national total. On the seat projection, the Coalition gains one in Victoria and three in ever-volatile Queensland, but loses one in Western Australia courtesy of Galaxy. Labor’s relative softness in Victoria, where a swing is actually now recorded in favour of the Coalition, was noted by me yesterday in an article for Crikey. This was based on calculations made before the latest numbers were added, which have caused Labor’s two-party total there to weaken still further – no doubt a tad excessively. I’m also not entirely confident about the extent to which the Greens are recorded as having fallen, since the trendline has dipped below any of the individual data points, which sometimes happens when there’s a sudden change. In other words, they’re down, but probably not by quite that much. No new results for leadership ratings this week.

  1. “…the Prime Minister was on ABC Radio Perth’s morning program, where he accused the media of living in a “parallel universe” in response to suggestions West Australians were angry at him and his Government over the state’s low GST share.

“I have met with hundreds of West Australians this week … and the reception I have had could not have been warmer, or more positive or more welcoming,” Mr Turnbull said.

“It is a complete parallel universe between what the media is saying and what the people I am meeting in the real world are saying to me.”

Brian seems to have overlooked the foolishness of starting a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.

  2. Failing the pub test
One train ride to Mandurah and a politics at the pub gathering surrounded by party faithful won’t give any politician, including the Prime Minister, an insight into how voters in WA, or indeed in any other state, feel.

Well there we go, the only voters that Brian came into contact with were Liberal party members. I’m gaining confidence that WA Labor is going to give the federal Liberals a repeat dose of what we’ve just handed out to the WA Liberals.

Then ask them what happens when you eventually get NBN of one sort or another.

I must remember that for future reference.

Actually, someone did post a very good link to a site which lets you get right down to individual addresses to find out what is currently planned.

    What a decidedly Trump-like comment!

I’d never vote Liberal but that didn’t stop me getting a selfie with the PM. Mind you there’s no way I’d have gotten a selfie with Abbott, or been anywhere near him for that matter.

There’s only like 1 Federal seat in the entirety of Australia that has a majority against SSM and that’s Maranoa, where I grew up. Actually I’m from Warwick which as a decent sized township / city was pretty progressive by those standards and it’s still very conservative by say Brisbane standards.

So majority support is kind of a stupid thing to poll.

Being somewhat a Luddite on this issue, I’ve been following the NBN discussion on here with interest as I am about to have it installed (or so I’ve been told). My internet currently comes via Foxtel cable and my internet speed is around the 35 mbs mark and with which I am quite happy. My ISP is Telstra. Have any bludgers been connected this way and has there service been compromised or reduced?

Go with an ISP other than Telstra or Optus. You’d be hard pressed to find a worse ISP than either of those two. I’m with iiNet and they are great, others here have recommended Internode.

  6. **The trick to opening links now is to right click and select open in a new tab. That way you don’t have to worry about coming back to PB.**
Or just centre button (scroll wheel button) click – if you have one.

At 35 Mbps per second on HFC , you should

roughly maintain what you have in all areas if they use the HFC (maybe with a bump, Telstra actually artificially caps HFC at ~35 Mbps unless you pay them an extra twenny a month).

roughly maintain what you have download wise on a FTTN connected and get significantly improved upload. You could drop down to 2/3rds your speed if you’re in a rotten position (and won’t have any recourse) anything below that allows you some recourse (NBN is obligated to provide at least 25 Mbps).

FTTC/B/P should all see significant increases available on both fronts.

The HFC is supposedly going to be upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard which in theory can go to 1GB/s. I will believe it when I see it.

Thank you for that, I must bookmark it this time. Very handy.

  9. Today’s PvO is yet another attack on the Libs for the mess they’ve made of SSM.

The mess above is how the government got itself into the position it’s now in on same-sex marriage. It’s how Australia has managed to embarrass itself on the world stage — unable to do what similar Westminster democracies such as Britain and New Zealand (under conservative governments) managed to achieve and legislate same-sex marriage via a parliamentary vote.

Which brings us to the postal plebiscite option. It’s likely to be approved by the partyroom this coming week as a way of holding a plebiscite without needing enabling legislation passed by parliament. As absurd as the idea is — something Turnbull pointed out when quashing a similar idea during the republic debate years ago — many Liberals see a postal plebiscite as the lesser of evils compared with other options, including granting a free vote.

Turnbull’s conservative praetorian guards — Peter Dutton and Mathias Cormann — are pushing hard for the postal plebiscite to resolve the issue.

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/inquirer/turnbull-may-be-forced-to-put-stamp-on-postal-marriage-plebiscite/news-story/12116fff9e21824d168024958358063c

If the Lib partyroom is going postal as a compromise, what is stopping a Labor MP putting a private member’s bill forward in the HoR when parliament resumes to force a parliamentary vote? Entsch would support the move, so would Bandt, Wilkie and there may be another Lib or two. A vote can then be held.

Hey Grimace, how’s your Toastmasters going?

My Competent Leadship Certificate turned up this week. I’m a long term member who is in no hurry to collect awards. I use my Toastmasters time to satisfy my 40 hours a year of continuous professional development with CPA Australia, something I’ve found to be extremely useful and very cheap, neither of which I can say of any CPA professional development course I’ve been to.

    How about you?

  11. Ctar1
I’m 6th generation Australian, but Celt only on both maternal and paternal sides of family, so it certainly seemed an odd marker of ‘ordinary’.

  12. Fess

I’ve extremely enjoyed the past hour or so, dipping in and out of Bill Maher’s comeback from his month-long absence, whilst doing the washing/hanging out/ bringing in – on a windy Saturday.

It was a real treat. His guests were good, including the dipshit Pastor, aren’t they all, those rogues who think moneyness is next to Godliness. They just expose what idiots they are.

Plus, my small contribution regarding Trump’s phone call with Turnbull, i.e., that it sounded like he was talking to an idiot, but the upshot was he, Turnbull, had no humanity, has been said over and again in thousands of words. It’s nice, for once, to have a finger on the pulse. Doesn’t happen very often.

  13. Grimace

Comment #856 @ 4.29 (S.A. time). Thanks for the tip. Telstra may get the flick. I previously was with Internode so they may get my business back again.

  14. Kezza:

The religious guy annoyed me during the Overtime segment (which has to be watched separately because it’s broadcast live on youtube) because he talked over all the other panelists with relentless Republican and Trump talking points. Hillary’s 33,000 deleted emails and on and on.

But yes the show was enjoyable.

  15. And after changing the answer to 1 question I now get
    83% “ordinary”.
You are as unique as budgie smugglers on Manly Beach

  16. It’s rather telling that Turnbull thinks that speaking only with Lib supporters is representative of speaking with people in the real world. He’s in a bubble and doesn’t realise it.

  17. [

I’ve just been polled by You Gov for the federal election.
    ]
By phone? They need to change whatever they’re doing.

  18. Monica Lynagh

I am sure Truffles does know. Which is why he chose Lib friendly places to go. his claims are merely S.O.P. bulldusting from a pollie.

  19. Monica L:

When in Albany Turnbull spent a lot of time with school kids who naturally treated him like a celebrity. He was also up at the National Anzac Centre but in a closed shop environment with RSL head honchos, who presumably weren’t going to be rude or get in his face. At the civic function I went to he attempted a derogatory remark at Labor in his speech but it fell flat and didn’t garner a snicker or even a laugh from the people in attendance.

  20. Questions from You Gov:
    1. Who did i vote for at the last election
    2. Rank the parties in from first preference so that all boxes are filled. Choices are ALP, Liberal, National, PHON, Xenophon, Australian Christians and independent. (dragged a box with their logo and put it in order of my theoretical vote)
    3. Generally speaking, how much interest do you usually have in what’s going on in politics?
    4. Which, if any, of the following issues do you think are serious enough to have a Prime Minister resign over? Please select all that apply.

    Same-sex marriage
    Living standards
    Pensions
    Health and hospitals
    Job security and unemployment
    Rights at work
    Defense and security
    Crime
    Welfare benefits
    The national economy
    Transport
    The environment
    Schools and Education
    Immigration and asylum seekers
    Housing
    Foreign policy
    Other
    None of these
    Don’t know

    5. Which of the following do you think would make the best Prime Minister?
    Bill Shorten
    Malcolm Turnbull
    Not sure

    6. Increased security measures were announced at major Australian airports after authorities foiled an attack. Virgin Australia said passengers should expect “an increased level of scrutiny” during the security screening process and travellers would need more time to get airside. Do you think the increased measures are necessary, or are they an over-reaction?
    Are an over-reaction
    Are necessary
    Don’t know

    7. Thinking about the issue of legalising same-sex marriage, would you rather the decision was made by Parliament or by a national plebiscite?

The decision on whether or not to allow same-sex marriage should be made by a referendum
The decision on whether or not to allow same-sex marriage should be made by Parliament
    Don’t know

    8. Generally speaking, do you think too many issues are being proposed for referendums, not enough, or it is about right?

Not enough issues are being proposed for referendums, and the people should be allowed to vote directly on more issues
The current balance is about right
Too many issues are being proposed for referendums, and Parliament should make more decisions itself
    Don’t know

    9. With parliament opening next week, the issue of legalising same sex marriage may be raised. It is possible that there may be a parliamentary vote on whether to legalise same sex marriage. Do you think MPs should be able to vote according to how they personally feel on the issue or whether they should vote according to the wishes of their party leadership?

They should vote according to their party leadership
They should vote according to how they personally feel on the issue
    Don’t know

    10. If there is a vote on legalising same sex marriage, it is thought that a group of Coalition MPs may to vote in favour of its legalisation, possibly against the wishes of the Coalition party leadership. If this happened, would this or would this not be a threat to Malcom Turnbull’s position?

It would not be a threat to Malcom Turnbull’s position
It would be a threat to Malcom Turnbull’s position
    Don’t know

    11. Generally speaking, would you rather political parties were funded through donations or through taxation?

Political parties should get their funding from donations from individuals and organisations
Political parties should receive funding from the government, paid for from taxation
    Don’t know

    12. Currently, under Australia’s constitution, a person cannot run for federal office if they hold dual citizenship. Do you think the constitution should or should not be changed to allow dual citizens to run for Federal office?

    It should be changed
    It should not be changed
    Don’t know

Just completed ALB, already had ACB.
I find it a very worthwhile activity and use it for a similar purpose to you as well as the value it has in its own right. One’s speaking ability does improve. Those starting off a very low base get the greatest improvement and it is really great to see the improvement they have in self confidence. It is an excellent program.
The leadership aspect wasn’t getting as much emphasis when I joined and I have been working hard to lift its profile. There are a lot of workbooks available as pdf downloads for free and I commend them to you.

  22. Which, if any, of the following issues do you think are serious enough to have a Prime Minister resign over?

Wow what a leading question given that there is no pressure on Turnbull to resign as PM. Why would you even ask this question if not to give the media something to make merry hell over?

  23. Grimace

Rather than repeat your lengthy post at 5.51 pm

All I can say is: Sheesh, how did you manage to remember/recall all the options?

As I said the other day, my robocall, in McMillan, was delivered at staccato pace, and gave no time for any considered thought.

Besides, when I hesitated, and didn’t choose within the time frame, I was thanked for my “non”-contribution.

T’was only then that I was told it was a poll by the Liberal Party of Victoria

Interesting that he didn’t get a reaction to his snide remark about Labor and thanks for the run down on the Albany visit.
It’s pretty obvious that Shorten is getting much broader contact with the voters in the Town Hall meetings he’s been doing.
The Shadow Ministers are also doing a lot of campaigning around the country. Catherine King has been pretty much up and down the East coast, including Tasmania, doing local events on health.

  26. Want to catch up with the state of play of renewable energy in Australia, including the role of pumped hydro attached to solar PV? A good read here:

[Australia currently has three PHES systems – Tumut 3, Kangaroo Valley, and Wivenhoe – all of which are on rivers. But there is a vast number of potential off-river sites.

In a project funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, we have identified about 5,000 sites in South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, the Canberra district, and the Alice Springs district that are potentially suitable for pumped hydro storage.]
