Essential Research: 55-45 to Coalition

The latest weekly Essential Research result has the Coalition’s two-party lead steady on 55-45, although the primary votes suggest Labor would have come very close to gaining a point: their primary vote is up two to 34 per cent, their best result since June, with the Coalition down one to 47 per cent and the Greens down one to 10 per cent. Of the supplementary questions, the most interesting for mine relates to the “Occupy” protests, as they allow for comparison with Essential’s polling on the Convoy of No Confidence in late August. That poll had 40 per cent agreeing the convoy protests represented their views against 38 per cent who disagreed, which was more favourable than I might have expected. However, the current poll has fully 69 per cent expressing agreement with the concerns of the Occupy protesters, even if only 29 per cent support the protests as such. Opinion on their removal is evenly divided.

Other questions have 28 per cent believing the current government favours businesses and 41 per cent believe it favours workers, with respective figures of 61 per cent and 8 per cent for the opposition; 50 per cent supporting greater restriction of coal seam gas mining on farm land; and a ten-point drop since April in the number believing poker machines need more regulation to 52 per cent, with no clear pattern evident for other types of gambling.

Gus – remember it’s only Morgan. We’re not going to show hubris (much) and we’re not going to get excited (much). We’ll be gracious and controlled at all times….. maybe!

What other female heads of state were there Angela Merkel?? She would finish off the old leech me thinks

Angela Merkel is not the German head of state – President Christian Wulff is.

Just like Gillard is not ours, but rather Queen Elizabeth II (as represented by Governor-General Quentin Bryce)

    You mean head of government]

Thank you Carey, you are quite correct and I am quite wrong in my description .

  3. I’m a bit bemused by the statement by Bali Boy’s dad that he took him to Bali to get him away from marijuana.

Isn’t that a bit like taking someone to Noosa to get away from the sea?

  4. [I can guarantee that, even if the 52-48 or less mark is accurate, then Abbott will still be safe as leader for a few months, to give him a chance to reverse the trend again. Overthrowing a leader is not a decision to be taken lightly – especially after the backlash from last year.]

True. What’s interesting about it though is that if that’s the case there’s a good chance Abbott will do more damage to Brand Liberal in that time.

  5. The internet is such an extraordinary phenomenon of the modern age.

Communication. Educational opportunities. Understanding amongst the different nations, cultures and creeds.

It also allows one to see the lecher Berlusconi in the very act with “Our Julia”. It’s already on Youtube.

I reckon Silvio is an ass-man (sorry Tony, just not your week; by all reports, not your’s)

Just saw the funniest thing on ch. 10 ‘the project’.
Julia looking lovely was given the once over by mr. bunga bunga silvio berlesconi.
If you can ..you gotta see it.

ABC TV News showed the clip. Gave Julia the once over….err two or three times .

  7. Laocoon,

I would have bet my two remaining balls on that going viral.

That was only the high shot. The full length one is better.

Silvio would have been beside himself, I was going to say something else but decided no I had better not on this refined blog

  9. Nice poll, small sample aside. It would make a nice headline for a new thread. I assume this used the same methodology that had it 39.5 – 60.5 just back in July.

Anything within 46-54 at this point in the cycle is not exceptional, and even if an election was imminent, anything within 48-52 is perfectly winnable for the incumbent. Perhaps if Newspoll can start giving a few results like this the media hacks will wake up from their “Abbott has it in the bag / Gillard is hopeless” mentality.

I’m feeling pretty smug about my observation back at 5280.

[Has any other airline had problems with A380 engines blowing up, or is it just QANTAS?]

I remember hearing some time ago that there was concern with the A380 because of the weight of fuel that they need to carry due to the distance of Aussie routes which results in them having to do full throttle take offs. Maybe just too big and heavy after all.

  12. mari,

I frequently type out something in the comment box, think about it and then delete it.

Quite happy for everyone else to let it all hang out.

[Oh, and another thing: Obama is coming back strongly.

I have been watching the polling trends on an almost daily basis and his approval ratings have been a negative 8-10 for ages.]
With what seems to be a never ending conveyor belt of Republican freak show candidates I should hope so.

  14. Morgan phone poll has Coalition lead at 52.5-47.5 on previous election’s preferences, 51.5-48.5 on respondent-allocated (further evidence it’s only face-to-face polling where Labor does badly on the latter measure). The sample’s only 525, but even so, this is Labor’s best result in a phone poll in a long, long time.

Not at all…it just so damned funny; even at the end speculating what exactly Silvio was thinking to himself after he had got an eyeful; he is chuckling away, quite pleased with himself

If you (or anyone else) is interested, check out RCP:

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-1452.html

The trend graph shows the Romney peak and then the Bachman, Perry and now Cain peaks while Romney stayed steady. Cain is going through a few difficulties at present and will likely drop off quickly and so it will be “Oh well, fine, lets make it Romney then if we can’t have anyone else!”

Oh, and another thing: Obama is coming back strongly.

With what seems to be a never ending conveyor belt of Republican freak show candidates I should hope so.

Hermann Cain was in trouble earlier this week for alleged sexual harassment when he was CEO of the Restaurants Association of America back in the 1990’s. Also they was a weird clip of him singing gospel.

Speaking of weird clips there was also a recent one of a either very drunk or drugged Rick Perry giving a speech. Scary stuff if ever became POTUS.

  20. Has anyone else seen the story about Stephen Fry being on the Qantas plane that had to land? With the number of followers he has on twitter, the reputation of Qantas won’t be improved one jot.

Julia is the one banga ranga Silvio cannot banga ranga.

When it comes down to it… Tim puts the garbage out… that’s ranga banga enough for me.

  22. [With Greece’s debt-ridden government at risk of collapsing as soon as today, Group of 20 chiefs meeting in Cannes, France, yesterday pushed European authorities to flesh out and enact a week-old rescue plan that has already shown signs of unraveling.

“We are grappling with a lack of confidence in markets that leaders will act,” Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in the French seaside resort. “It is therefore very important for leaders to act.” ]

The Australian PM showing she knows what to do….excellent

  23. I have just seen the youtube clip of Berlusconi supposedly checking out our PM. I imagine this made the news ahead of other more substantive reporting from the G20.

    *sighs*

  24. Funny about Stephen Fry. I watched QI last night and they said Sudan is the largest country in Africa. Must have been before South Sudan seceded.
