Essential Research: 54-46 to Labor

The second week of Essential Research polling under Julia Gillard has perfectly replicated the first, with Labor and the Coalition steady on 42 per cent and 39 per cent of the primary vote and Labor maintaining its 54-46 two-party lead. This compares with a Coalition primary vote lead of 40 per cent to 38 per cent in the final poll under Kevin Rudd, when Labor’s two-party lead was 52-48. Essential has also surveyed on approval of Julia Gillard for the first time, finding her approval rating at 48 per cent (seven points higher than Rudd’s final result from May 31) and disapproval at 27 per cent (20 points lower). Approval of Tony Abbott has been gauged for the second week running, and it does not replicate the result of the previous week – which was itself reflected in Newspoll – showing a bounce in the wake of the leadership change. His approval has gone from 35 per cent on May 31 to 40 per cent on June 28 to 37 per cent on July 5, while his disapproval has gone from 50 per cent to 39 per cent to 47 per cent. Gillard leads as preferred prime minister 49-29, which is little different from the 47-30 lead Rudd recorded in his final poll. Also canvassed are best party to deal with various issues, which finds Labor gaining ground on every measure since three weeks ago (the interesting exceptions are “being honest and ethical” and “handling environmental and climate change issues”, which are stable). “Attributes to describe the Prime Minister” allow comparisons with Gillard on July 5 with Rudd on May 10, which are uniformly favourable to Gillard (who scores 21 points higher on being “down to earth&#148). Further questions show clear hostility to any notion of a “big Australia”.

  1. But does JG follow you

She certainly does! And unlike Kev she did it pretty soon after I followed her. Kev only followed me after I sent repeated tweets to him asking why he was following certain obvious spambots but not me.

So score one to JG’s office.

  2. TTfab

apparently the No 1 medical piece of equipment is bandages

    followed bu antiseptics

    then of course actual instruments

a defib would perhaps be in the bottom quartle

  3. Ramos-Horta on Lateline was his usual excellent self. What a guy. Oozes principle.
I infer from his answers to Tony J that Timor-Leste is pretty much certain to go along with a refugee centre IF – his if – it is run by the UNHCR, has the infrastructure and the running costs provided, and the details suit them. They are certainly not in the least interested in a gas bribe to sweeten it. What he said about what his people feel deeply on a personal level about displaced people in desperate need should be listened to by all. What a shame we don’t have a people about whom we can generalize like that.

If this Timor/UNHCR centre can be achieved with all the humanitarian standards, I think it’s the best option of all in the circumstances.

So, looks like Mount Hagen can stop building TP. 😆

  4. [What he said about what his people feel deeply on a personal level about displaced people in desperate need should be listened to by all. ]

Would he like a few thousand Muslim settlers in his Catholic country, having just got rid of the last lot? I expect not.

  5. TTfab

    point taken

just in most of the deloping world a defib is perhaps the realm of the top percentile

for most of the worlds destitiute a simple clean dinfected bandage is worth its weight in defibs

    just saying

    🙁

  6. pollbludgers, whens the next newspoll, are we in the polling period?

takes a few days to complete, if memory serves.

Ron, I’m not arguing it (ilegal entry to oz by boat people) is legal I argue that in a few years from now it MUST be.”

it never by law be !!!

unless oz adopts of Law of OPEN borders allowing any one to come to oz at any time from where ever , without even Australein’s Govt’s prior ok for health , and without ok for virus’s , without ok for security & without ok for qualafying for refugee status under UN Conventon….yet this is Greens polisy !

bet 95% of oz oppose it if informed

  8. Speaking of which, no-one ever asks why wealthy Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states don’t take in any of their co-religionist refugees from Afghanistan. Qatar is the second-richest country in the world according to the CIA Factbook, and the UAE and Saudi Arabia aren’t far behind. Their refugee intake is zero, but no-one ever asks them why. Japan and South Korea, also wealthy countries, take almost no refugees at all, on the grounds that this would “contaminate their racial purity.” Can you imagine what would happen if an Australian politician said that? But no-one criticises them for this. The world assumes that because Australia is a settler state with an ethnically mixed population, we can be used as the world’s dumping ground for unwanted people, while other wealthy countries evade any responsibility. This subject seems to be completely taboo in debates about refugee issues.

2 days ago? i was in truthy town, out of 20 businesstypes that were there 19 were full on “close the door types” hells bells I was there to talk about renewables not reffos

    Bravo for @2569

we need to shine as strong a light as we can on the refugee issue

Watch that post by Psep being twisted into an anti ALP rant by the usaul suspects including the Lib’s new Talking head on PB one TP 🙁

“2 days ago? i was in truthy town,..”

truthy town you went , well suspect they ONLY get uninfomed ‘News’ eithr from Abbott dog whistle fear brigade OR Greens open borders let all in without any cheks done first

so not surpise the tke Abbott option over Greens !
Issue is how to communicate Labor’s responsible security etc checks criteria and Labor’s humanitarien UN Convention adopted polisy to th Public !

labor WILL and does accept all refugees so found to be (net of health/scurity cheks anyway

  12. 2569

These places should take refugees and it would be better than a refugee camp but there would be significant racism problems. The economy in much of the Arabian Peninsular is far more developed than the society and politics. Japan did not get re-educated as well as Germany after the war (but Germany had more of the history and cultural development needed to have a more open society).

  13. This is nothing to do with whatever this thread was about, or what it may now be about.

But, today, I am stunned to discover that ABC TV is no longer to broadcast normal programming in High Definition.

Apparently because ABC is devoting its digital spectrum to the 24/7 News thing.

    Unbelievable!

How much money have I and others spent on purchasing HD TV and relevant technology and devices, cabling, connectivity etc?

For this. Back to the past.

I registered today on ABC Have Your Say, to have my very say.

    And did.

Who, apart from anyone in the ABC, should I speak to?

I did call the ABC. The person who answered was pretty, mmmhh, may I say, abrupt.

Suggested that I should contact the person in charge.

    Who is? said I.

    Stephen Conroy, he said.

    I laughed.

  14. To Pseph & Gusface,@2573

Fortunatly we are a multicultural society.

The argument you and others use,
” people have to accept the reality of the way things are” or “hey look at them they’re doing bad stuff that makes it ok for me to accept bad stuff happening too”, is childish.

You don’t seem to understand that you cannot make anyone or any entity do something it doesn’t want to do.

Because a country is morally bankrupt, has evil and discriminatory laws, kills children who they put in jail, Stones people to death or has a really wierd national sport, etc

doesn’t mean “a pile of fetid dingo’s kidneys” . The, “lets examine countries who are bad, and really try to understand their fear and xenophobia and copy it” is cause for alarm.

It’s a childish line of thought that takes any sort of thinking debate and brings you to the level of one of my 6yr olds who say,

“I won’t play nice cos he won’t play nice”

(an argument I have to respond to every working day at 11.15am)

  15. Gus , i cut sugar cain up that ways yonder ago , good people but only know and therefore beleive what info they hear , and what they ‘hear’ is MSN…a problamnm of many non capital cities thats why nutter Nats used to do so well

And most of the time the local commerical radio stations take a news service from the big smoke sourced from either Fairfax, or 2GB.

  17. Gusface@2585

    man under

    Sorry

but i wont play your game

ps pseph and i were talking adult stuff

maybe you should stick to your 6 yr ols

Well the Greens do tnd to pre-select them.

Senator Very-Young being but one example.

  18. Not to worry. About who to complain to re the ABC.

    I had an idea.

    A letter to Janet Albrechsten.

    Sent.

    See what happens.

  19. Thanks Frank, but I don’t think so.

ABC is in denial at its own stupidity.

In any event, all one can really do in attempting to contact the ABC is futile phone calls and probably equally futile message board comments.

  20. Frank , re Senator Hanson-Young , who you called ‘Senator Very-Young’ wanted to put a trade boycut on China over a Google internet beef

but then you may care to also consider for your dictonary
    aka “Senator Hanson- please explain”

  21. First up “Manunda” one word suburb in Cairns-

    No game a discussion about

    -life- & death

    what is right

    what is wrong

Humane dealings- using logic -science -positive relationship building

    It’s not game it’s all we’ve got

A thin thread by which civilisation hangs

Politics – war by another name

That’s why we’re hear, that’s why we carry out discourse

What game are you playing? A non-political one?

I’ve taught and learnt at Uni, TAFE, High School, Primary, Pre-school

20 years in 30 other jobs

It is all the same thing

Humans trying to build relationships, learning and understanding or war

-every individual makes a choice – about strategy & tactics in politics there is no neutrality only learning -right or wrong-

    All the very best

  22. MG

Legit deemed Refugees under UN Conventon criteria DO get to come to oz under Labor ,
AFTER FIRST geting rescued from oceans , getting proper fed , after gitting looked after healthwise , checked for security , getting supervised under UNHRC , and then at tax payers expense get moved to oz , at which time they get t tax payers expense full welfare options …so whats your beef

  23. No Beef Ron,

would you choose to leave your home? possesions? cultural ties? and travel without a secure plan in the hope of, perhaps, at some stage being in a foriegn country maybe being granted the right to stay.

Think of “legit” and “queue jumpers” as the same PEOPLE (the 1% who come in boats) as fathers, sons, brothers, Mothers, daughters & sisters then we can talk about how they feel, their fears, their hopes and how we can make the world a better place.

however having just typed that I’m thinking you may find thinking about others in a compasionate, caring and understanding way extremely hard. Let me put it another way.

I don’t care how much money is spent on theirs, yours or anyones needs.

You see the Greens and those 3 or 4% who are about to swing back to the Greens

    don’t care either.

  24. Its interesting how some of the MSM (read Miranda Devines pool of bile in the SMH) are being so quick to put down Julia G’s AS speech and the chances of anything happening in Timor.

Watched Lateline tonight and considering its REALLY early days as far as that proposal is concerned i’d say its actually been recieved as positivley as could be hoped by Horta and Gusmao.

    “No Beef Ron, ”

then you ar not disagreeing with any of 7 points of my #2593 post , legit refugees do get to come to oz !

polisy 7 points I listed is humanitarien as its base

‘legit’ is peoples fleeing for there lives , dont try to read someting into legit thats not there

  26. Funny thing happened today. My OH got a letter from our local state MP Adele Carles. It was mainly about how she has been cleared of any wrong doing in regard to use of parlimantry allowances.

What i can work out is how does she think its going to help her re-election chances by using her printing / mailing allowances to send out something that really just reminds everybody that she had the poor taste to cheat on her hubby with Chairman Sniff and so get investigated in the first place??

  27. Before JGillard greedily knifed Rudd I always assumed that a Turnbull would do better against her than Abbott, and I thought the same thing after her betrayal of Rudd.

However I never expected JGillard to actually create a competition for who could be the nicest sounding right-winger. If Gillard persists with her jump to the right that deals Abbott into the conversation then I think the Liberals will be more competitive., but still lose.

I do still think Turnbull would do better than Abbott, but now because of JGillard’s revelation of right wing sympathies I think he would now do much better than if she had stuck to the Labor script.

Turnbull’s more moderate bent and better communication and business background enables him to be a credible Liberal Lite which is the same path Gillard is on. In other words JGillard is fighting on Liberal turf where Turnbull is the better and more acceptable fighter.

JGillard has created an avenue for the Liberals to get back on competitive terms and I think a sudden replacement of Abbott with Turnbull would give the Libs a boost and be the shock to the news cycle that steals air from JGillard and breaks a lot of the hold of her honeymoon. She will still get one I guess, but diminished and faster fading.

And the danger of Turnbull taking over from Abbott is he will try to take over the agenda and get more into making news with policy, he will be much more fleet of foot and adaptive than Abbott, and could stretch a more moderately paced JGillard.

She needs to get to an election ASAP before she make a mess of other things and lets the Libs back in the door on equal footing.

At the very least the Libs need Turnbull as shadow Treasurer to fill that lingering credibility gap.

It would certainly make for a very entertaining and interesting election contest. Though I would still expect JGillard to win.

Friend of mine got one as well, and I assume Bilbo got one as well – even though I’ve sent him a copy of my Friend’s.

Adele is bonkers if she thinks a simple letter will forgive the voters of Fremantle – except for those Greens who still support her.
