The Australian reports Newspoll has the Coalition with an unchanged two-party lead of 51-49, from primary votes of Labor 32% (up one), Coalition 39% (up one), Greens 12% (steady) and One Nation 7% (steady). Despite the stable voting intention results, Anthony Albanese records much improved personal ratings, up four on approval to 41% and down five on disapproval to 53%, and increases his lead as preferred prime minister from 45-40 to 47-38. Peter Dutton is down two on approval to 39% and up two on approval to 53%. The poll was conducted Monday to Friday from a sample of 1255.
Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition (open thread)
Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings bounce back, but not much change on voting intention from the latest Newspoll.

And the EU is retaliating with tariffs on these US exports
The European Commission said steel and aluminium products would be hit with tariffs in return, but also textiles, leather goods, home appliances, house tools plastics and wood. Agricultural products will also be impacted — including poultry, beef, some seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar and vegetables.
I thought the Europeans had banned US chooks, eggs and beef for health reasons many years ago. Something about filling the beef with hormones, refrigerating and over washing the eggs, and washing the dead chooks in chlorine.

While the Trump tariffs are a total own goal for Trump. There does seem to be a lot of markets it is opening up for Australian produce.

It doesn’t just increase costs for consumers and make your exports less competitive. The reduced competition also results in less innovation. Over time the quality of your goods drops compared to the rest of the world and you start falling behind technologically.
Look at the Australian car market in the seventies or eighties. Look at Eastern Europe when they were behind the Iron Curtain. Or, and this is about isolationism rather than tariffs, look at what happened to China after it turned inwards. Eventually the barbarians turned up with gunboats and a few thousand soldiers to wreak havoc.
The federal lib/nats and propaganda media units, after the 2025 federal election
Will have a difficult time in opposition , if the result is equal or worst than 2022 federal election ,
Dutton wont remain as leader.
Angus Taylor , Sussan Ley would be the only federal senior liberal party members be next in line
The federal liberal party next choice is a unknown liberal party leader
My opinion is that whoever shapes up the best and most convincing response regarding America’s new tariffs on Australia – which could take multiple different forms, there’s more than one way to go about this, just make sure that you are credible that’s all – will decisively win the fed election coming up.
Will tip one or other of Lab or LNP into majority territory IMHO.

It was sad to see Kim Beazley on 4 Corners tonight trying to defend the indefensible: turning our sacred National War Memorial into a theme park funded in part by weapons manufacturers.
He looked like a demented old windbag, seeing no problems with that half a billion dollar boondoggle.
It was a classic example of the Canberra establishment of both parties waving through huge expenditures on questionable projects with conflicts of interest galore.
It was significant that the man most responsible for this mess, former Coalition Defense minister and former War Memorial Director Brendan Nelson, refused to be questioned about it and his role, working for the merchants of death.
Those who did appear to support it, including the current Director and Council members, were unapologetic about dodgy financials and the architectural vandalism to that iconic site.

Kimbo should hold his head up high.
He has nothing to explain. God forbid the partial funding of a war memorial upgrade from the companies that actually make it possible to successfully participate and win said wars.
—————————————————-
“Upgrade?”
The words “desecration” and “travesty.” come to mind.
My father served in both the first and second world wars (6th Light Horse and AIF) and I’m sure that’s how he’d have described it. It was designed as a war “memorial” to honor the fallen, not a war museum or nowadays a theme park.
I also suspect he’d have suggested they spend those hundreds of millions of dollars, not on glorifying war, but on helping our veterans, who suffered like him from their service.
Poor old Kim looked and sounded like a tired old Colonel Blimp.
The current Director and a former Reserve general on its Council also saw nothing wrong with the Memorial’s financial support from the merchants of death. These corporations presumably will have advertising benefits when their weapons and equipment are exhibited in the expanded Memorial.
And isn’t it strange that all those former Defence Ministers end up in retirement being employed by or associated with defence contractors. And amazingly while still being associated with the War Memorial. In Brendan Nelson’s case while Director and in Beazley’s case, Chair of its Council. No conflict of interest there.
I’m not sure where you are getting your information from but a lot of it is inaccurate.
Here is the ATO guidance on CGT for SMSF:
https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/super-for-individuals-and-families/self-managed-super-funds-smsf/tax-on-income/capital-gains
Yes, there are discounts, just as there are for non-super CGT. I’m sure you’re aware of them, like the Small Business Owners discount.
I have no idea what you mean by “a zero rate on half a $4 million Fund, then only 15% on the next million.”
Tell me – how are you going to apply it to Defined Benefit Funds, many worth well over $3 million despite being unfunded?
Someone earlier, clearly a local Trump supporter, noted when criticism was pointed at Trump stated (wtte) that Trump was democratically elected and “leader of the free world”.
I can’t be bothered going back to see who wrote the tripe but:
(a) It is debatable just how “democratic” the voting system is in the US. It’s their system but there are plenty of holes in it and,
(b) As far as I am concerned – as are a number other “free” world countries, Trump is becoming a US dictator, does not give a toss about anyone else, or the country they come from and does not represent me, in this democratic country.
I believe him to be a degenerate person who is not fit to be in office let alone “leader of the free world”
He is currently selling Ukraine down the river, he is no “friend” of Australia and cares even less.
Give Putin his due when asked: ‘What do you think about Australia?” He replied by saying: ‘I never think of Australia.’
Trump’s approach to taxation is nothing if not original.
He is going to wreck the joint so badly so nobody will have to pay tax.
Dutton’s announcement will ape Abbott’s announcement.
Tax cuts with no cuts to services.
After which Dutton cut $50 billion from hospitals.
Will Aussie voters be fooled by Dutton twice?
Is Dutton worth the risk?
Trump got79 million votes. Harris got 77 million votes. Around 89 million potential voters did not vote.
The Trump albatross carcass around Peter Dutton’s neck is stinking more by the day – and the phenomena is evidenced all over the world…
In Britain, a languishing prime minister is suddenly a statesman, while his up-and-coming populist rival has been thrown on his heels. In Canada, the incumbent Liberal Party has a chance to win an election long thought out of reach. In Germany, the incoming center-right chancellor is dominating the agenda after an election many feared would be a breakthrough for the hard right.
As President Trump’s “shock and awe” policies radiate around the world, they are reshaping global politics in unforeseen ways.
Mr. Trump’s sweeping tariffs and threats to the trans-Atlantic alliance have breathed life into centrist leaders, who are regaining popularity for their willingness to stand up to the American president. His clash with Ukraine and tilt toward Russia have thrown right-wing populists from Britain to Germany off balance, blunting, for the moment, their efforts to capitalize on Mr. Trump’s restoration to the White House.
“One of the great ironies of Trump is that he turns out to be the great unifier of Europe,” said Constanze Stelzenmüller, an expert in trans-Atlantic relations at the Brookings Institution in Washington. “It is impossible to overstate how shocked Europeans are by what’s happening.”
The “Trump bump” goes beyond Europe. In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum has won praise, and stratospheric poll numbers, for her coolheaded handling of Mr. Trump’s tariffs. Mark Carney, a former central banker, was catapulted to the leadership of Canada’s Liberal Party with 86 percent of the vote on the belief that he can manage a trade war with the United States.

My paternal grandfather entered the RAAF at 19 years of age in the 1942 and was sent to Brisbane from Grafton to learn to fly on the old tiger moths. He then went Canada for a year to qualify as a Lancaster pilot. He survived 66 missions over Germany and the Netherlands between mid 44 and may 45 including the most dangerous last tranche of missions over Dresden and Berlin with the Americans were doing the day shifts.
He was on the small committee that got g for George ready. Sadly he died 9 months before it debuted. He would be proud of the unique experience the modern war memorial became. Interactive and ‘theme parkish’ displays are much more effective and engaging for the following generations to learn from than static, sober names on walls. Both these have their place in the memorial.
You sound like a silly old broken down fool with your criticism of a WAR memorial

I think you’re overstating the imposition of Trump’s tariffs on the election outcome. Our combined steel & aluminum exports to the US are worth $1B annually, whereas our total exports are $660B. China might pick up the slack.
Complete shambles.
Dutton routinely makes off-the-cuff populist policy announcements without any real work having beend done on the policies, without consulting industry and without consulting his Shadow Cabinet. Thus he often catches his shadow cabinet ministers on the hop with some brain snap or other.
Here we have Dutton, Ley and Taylor (what a stellar policy troika!) all making their own shit up. None of it makes any sense. You add Hume to that policy Tower of Babel.

As with any very large group of people there is going to be a wide range of opinions. Within the Veteran community there is a wide variety. Some align with yours. Most don’t, realising that the AWM needed significant work to adequately house and display its collection and appropriately Memorialise our fallen in particular and all those who served. They also can see that there is on going funding for support of Veterans and the capital expenditure was not done at the expense of the ongoing support.
It was always designed to be a museum. That was part of Bean’s original proposal. Not sure why you think it wasn’t. Nor why you now think it is a “desecration” and “travesty” or theme park.
I’m confused about your claim of weapons advertising because I’ve never seen any on my previous visits. I am yet to visit since it has opened the new galleries but highly doubt that there is any provision for any sort of advertising unless you include signs for the bookshop and cafe.
It is clear that highly partisan left wing hacks oppose the redevelopment because it was the Abbott government that committed to it and Nelson was the Director. Grow up.

Tell me – how are you going to apply it to Defined Benefit Funds, many worth well over $3 million despite being unfunded?
__________________________________________
Pensions in defined benefit funds are already taxed, with a 10% offset that benefits those whose personal contributions are a higher proportion of the actual pension payable.
Very few DFBs would be worth over $3 million notionally – probably only former Department Heads of long service in the public service and and former judiciary members – again of longer service.
The other fact is that DFBs cannot be drawn down as a lump sum once the pension takes effect – unlike owners of super funds who can sell assets to take them below the $3 million mark.
So stop talking bullshit about things that are informed by your prejudices rather than by actual knowledge.

Nine Entertainment has defended the decision to publish an advertisement worth $200,000 from Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party on the front page of the Age, saying any other decision might imply it endorsed the sentiments of political ads.
But staff and readers have criticised the Age for running the ad, which says “There are only two genders”, while calling the billionaire “a persistent wart on the foot of Australian politics” in an editorial on the same day.
The editorial criticised “the recurring irritant” for his promise to spend more than $1m in advertising before the election, “once again using his wealth to broadcast slogans on television, radio and the front pages of newspapers”. “The claim in the advertisement, made without context or nuance, is simplistic and hurtful to many,” the editorial said.

My wife and I both enjoy an Allocated Pension – and living the life we are educated as to our circumstances (and have been for 25 years since my retirement from Corporate Banking with a major Australian bank)
I have no idea what you are talking about
I, more so than my wife, have a need to keep abreast of the amount I have in superannuation noting Trump has seen some $50,000- wiped from the balance over the last 2 weeks so there is now a margin
Whilst that may seem a bit of money, in the real world it transpires to a $3,000- reduction in my Allocated Pension per annum, so $60- a week
The preference is for the balance to increase – and my income to increase taking the minimum pension allowable (and half that over periods since the GFC)
And on another matter, given the impact Trump’s tariffs will have on our farm gate produce, which is our largest export to the USA, where is the National Party leader supporting the government in its requests to Trump?
In lieu of China, insert Japan & Korea. I’m off.

The opportunity cost of the AWM funding was carried by all of the nation’s cultural institutions including the Archives, the national museum, the national library and the national art gallery.
Weapons manufacturer’s logos are on prominent display in the AWM.
The AWM is part memorial, part museum, part shop, part archive and part propaganda.
I am not sure they still have it now but there was a place where you could ‘experience’ bombing a german city during WW2. I asked a guide why there were not screams coming over the sound system. Discreet silence.
The AWM also fails to address our longest war: the conquest.
It largely fails to address our war crimes. After Nelson’s extolling of BR-S they have been forced to add some text.
Finally, the AWM really fails when presenting some basic truths. We lost in Afghanistan. We lost in Vietnam. Try finding that in the AWM.
The AWM also fails in terms of proportion. Most of the actual experience of soldiers happens after wars as veterans and their families struggle to re-adjust. The AWM does a paltry job in that space.
OTOH, Japanese visitors sometimes get a very unpleasant surprise. Their education system does well on Hiroshima but almost completely fails to acknowledge a near-decade of their own barbarity.
