Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition (open thread)

Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings bounce back, but not much change on voting intention from the latest Newspoll.

The Australian reports Newspoll has the Coalition with an unchanged two-party lead of 51-49, from primary votes of Labor 32% (up one), Coalition 39% (up one), Greens 12% (steady) and One Nation 7% (steady). Despite the stable voting intention results, Anthony Albanese records much improved personal ratings, up four on approval to 41% and down five on disapproval to 53%, and increases his lead as preferred prime minister from 45-40 to 47-38. Peter Dutton is down two on approval to 39% and up two on approval to 53%. The poll was conducted Monday to Friday from a sample of 1255.

  1. Another evening another dose of Sky News satire.

Redbridge’s Con the Fruiter discussing the WA election result:

Presenter: How do you describe the WA result which is the second best Labor performance in history ?

Con the fruiterer (Redbridge): what we saw were millennials voting with their feet to send an emphatic message of disapproval to the Prime Minister over anger over inflation and housing affordability.

  2. c@t: “Also, don’t try and reproduce the spin of Trump’s mouthpiece KKKaroline Leavitt…”

Karoline Leavitt comes across like she’s the work experience press secretary. I’ll give her her due: she stands there bravely at every press conference and does her level best to defend the indefensible. But most of what she says is utter bollocks.

  3. And the EU is retaliating with tariffs on these US exports

The European Commission said steel and aluminium products would be hit with tariffs in return, but also textiles, leather goods, home appliances, house tools plastics and wood. Agricultural products will also be impacted — including poultry, beef, some seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar and vegetables.

  4. Peter Hartcher also has some wise words about the Trump Tariff War:

Australia’s government has kept a cool head. Some countries are retaliating against the Trump tariffs. Australia is not.

This is the sane course of action. As the Albanese government reminds us, tariffs are acts of “self-harm”. If Australia retaliates by applying a 25 per cent tariff to American products entering Australia, what does that do? It forces Australians to pay more for US products. We have enough inflation without concocting more.

Should Albanese return the insult, at least rhetorically? Canada’s Justin Trudeau called Trump’s tariffs “very dumb”, for instance.

But Canada’s politics are different to Australia’s. Trump has promised to annex Canada; he’s only put tariffs on Australia. In any case, Trudeau was in his last week in office.

For Australia, it might be emotionally satisfying to be rude to Trump but it would achieve nothing useful. Peter Dutton is blaming Albanese for the tariffs.

The opposition excitedly claimed a great “gotcha” – that Albanese was the only leader of a Quad country who hadn’t met Trump in person. This overlooked the fact that they’d all been slugged with tariffs whether they’d met Trump or not.

    https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/trump-has-done-us-a-favour-by-showing-where-we-stand-during-peacetime-20250312-p5lixf.html

Simply, a Coalition who does not have the national interest at heart, simply petty political point-scoring.

  5. meher baba,
Karoline Leavitt is all in on the Trump Double Speak and Disinformation train. Don’t be fooled by her young age.

  6. The Japanese went to Washington, beseeching the Mango Mussolini to not hit them with tariffs – didn’t he see all the Japanese automakers with factories in the USA?

    Reporting from Tokyo
    March 11, 2025
Japanese officials visiting Washington this week have failed to win assurances from the Trump administration that the country would be exempt from sweeping tariffs set to hit imports of metals and cars into the United States.

Japan’s trade minister, Yoji Muto, told his American counterparts that the country should not be targeted by the new tariffs because it invests large amounts in the United States and employs many people there.

U.S. officials, Mr. Muto said, stressed that their priority was on “reciprocity,” as well as reviving local manufacturing and preserving jobs. “It is not that case that Japan will be exempt from tariffs from tomorrow,” Mr. Muto said in a news conference held in Washington on Monday evening.

Yet the fool Dutton expects special treatment for us, and blames Albo for not tugging his forelock like Spud wishes he could.

  7. Hi Paul A

I would say that a Morgan poll would be more or less largely ignored by the betting operators, unless there is sufficient demand by the betting public to change the odds.

Polling information, like a Newspoll, may be considered, along with other factors that may influence the outcome of the election.

I see no reason at this stage to change my opinion from a Dutton majority 😉

  8. Let us not forget that Peter Dutton reckons that Donald Trump is shrewd, reasonable and a great thinker.
Yes, Dutton is that much of an idiot. No judgement. No loyalty to Australia. No respect for international agreements. No self respect.
Yes, Dutton praises Trump and does not resile when Trump does a dog act.
Yes, Centre, FUBAR, P1 and the whole concatenation of Dutton groupies are stuck with the Trump and Trump lite.

  9. Centre at least try and get the facts if you want to write in some sort of authoritative and scholarly prose on things you know nothing about.

Liberal MPs losing faith in ‘small target’ Dutton
Coalition MPs are pushing Peter Dutton to unveil big policies in his upcoming budget reply speech, amid concerns there needed to be a stronger economic agenda to convince voters to chuck Labor out of power after just one term.

Ed Husic nicely summed up Trump’s tariff action on Australia as a “dog act”.

    Well said Ed.

    Regarding the term “dog act”.

    It has me thinking.

I’m sure it’s only an Australian thing, correct me if I’m wrong.

I can only presume the term comes from a sly dog biting a person that trusted the dog.

If that is the case then Ed Husic is very right!

Go Ed on behalf of the Australian people!

the “tariffs on Australia” issue will be easily solved with the removal of Rudd. He said some hateful things about the Democratically elected head of the free world. And we’ve got a nothing PM here who wants to stick by Rudd.
So, it’s very simple. Rudd gets sacked = Tariffs get withdrawn.
Remember, Trump has a long memory.
The sooner Albo gets rid of Rudd, the better for Australia.
Rudd has a history of being “anti Australia”, after all.

As for the recent nonsense commentary about Dutton avoiding SE QLD during the Cyclone Event.
Check the flight itinerary of both politicians. Dutton flew in as the Cyclone approached, and gutless Albo flew out, after a few pathetic “photo ops”.
    Check their flight itineraries.

    I have spoken about 2019 many times before. Basically this;

    – say, 95% of people expected Shorten to win,
    – the betting volumes were extremely small as a consequence,
    – one bookmaking operation decided to pay out on Shorten as an advertising exercise.

The cost for that organisation to pay out was nowhere near what they claimed.

They lie, like all other corporations 😉

  15. Centre: “meher b @ 7.14 pm
No. I’m talking about capital gains, not interest on loans and dividends or rent revenue.”

Sigh… My point is that income from capital gains is not simply income from the investment of someone’s “own money.” More often than not the investment is geared. At the end of the day, we are talking about another form of income. It seems to me to be perfectly reasonable for that income to be subject to taxation. I don’t like the way the CGT is currently designed: I think it should be a much lower flat rate rather than being taxed at 50 per cent of the marginal tax rate, which is unfairly beneficial to people who are heavily geared.

But we need a CGT. It was a really excellent iniative of the Hawke Government in its second term.

  16. Coalition MPs are pushing Peter Dutton to unveil big policies in his upcoming budget reply speech, amid concerns there needed to be a stronger economic agenda to convince voters to boot Labor from power after just one term.
Several Coalition MPs have told The Australian there urgently needed to be serious economic policy released and they are worried the Opposition Leader is putting too much emphasis on public service cuts to balance the budget.
One senior Liberal told The Australian it was unclear what Mr Dutton stood for, while others were worried the Coalition would not be offering income tax cuts at the election or doing enough to unwind Labor’s industrial relations agenda.
The performance of opposition Treasury spokesman Angus Taylor has also come under focus, with one MP labelling him a “dead weight” and “totally reactive”. Another MP argued Mr Taylor was showing no signs he could beat Jim Chalmers in a political contest on the economy. “I’m not sure what Angus has been doing,” one MP said. “There is a lack of policy but also a lack of interest in policy.”
Coalition MPs say the past fortnight has been messy for the opposition, with a public split emerging between Mr Dutton and Mr Taylor over whether there should be divestiture powers for the insurance sector. The lack of policy from Mr Dutton has been noticed by voters, with Newspoll showing a majority of Australians do not believe the Coalition is ready to govern. However, there are other Coalition MPs who back the small-target strategy and believe it has worked to keep the pressure on the government over its economic failures.

Derp derp derp derp-derp! Dumb dumb dumb dumb-dumb

How do these people operate in modern society?

  18. Centre: “…one bookmaking operation decided to pay out on Shorten as an advertising exercise.”

What were they trying to advertise? How incredibly stupid they were?

  19. There are rumblings in the Dutton camp:

[‘A policy mix-up has exposed a fissure between Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his most senior colleagues on his threat to break up big insurance companies, as internal documents show Coalition MPs were told it was not their policy.

Coalition talking points leaked to this masthead show that senior Liberals believed the party was not in favour of a divestment policy until Dutton backed the idea more strongly on Tuesday.

Peter Dutton and his shadow treasurer Angus Taylor have made contradictory statements on insurance.

The mixed messages have raised questions about the sharpness of the opposition’s campaign operation before an imminent election, with some Liberals laying blame on the leader’s office.

For weeks, a document guiding MPs on communicating with the media stated that “insurance does not form part” of the Coalition’s plan to punish anti-competitive conduct by forcing divestiture, which shadow ministers were instructed to say was limited only to badly behaving supermarkets.

But these words were stripped from the instruction sent to MPs on Wednesday morning after top Coalition figures gave different answers earlier in the week when asked if the opposition wanted to give regulators the power to split up insurers.

Dutton in February floated the prospect of changing laws to create more competition in the insurance sector, as rising premiums and unpaid claims sparked debate its ethics.

In the weeks that followed he was contradicted by deputy leader Sussan Ley, shadow treasurer Angus Taylor and finance spokeswoman Jane Hume, adding weight to Labor’s claim that the party’s policies are muddled.’] – SMH

“Muddled” is an understatement. While it’s too late in the cycle to ditch Dutton, if there was a credible replacement, it may’ve been considered. Thus they’re saddled with a policy-free leader, who’s used national security as a plaything, and who tells porkies in an attempt to get him out of strife. He should retire from politics to manage his relatively enormous wealth.

  20. And the Teals resorting to push-polling in Bean..

Climate 200 founder Simon Holmes à Court has declared the traditionally safe Labor seat of Bean in play at the coming federal election, when Voices of Bean candidate Jessie Price will challenge second-term incumbent MP David Smith.

Speaking at the National Press Club after his address on Wednesday, Mr Holmes à Court revealed that polling Climate 200 had commissioned in the seat had shown strong support for Ms Price, while drawing encouragement from the weekend’s Western Australian election.
    ……
It is understood the polling in Bean was conducted on behalf of Climate 200 by uComms and used a methodology in which a lead-in question describing Ms Price in positive terms was used before asking about the respondent’s voting intentions.

    On hypotheticals
Here is closer statistics to the federal election result then the betting odds
Federal Lib/nats combined primary vote below 36%
Labor primary vote 32.5% or higher
    Labor 98.75% Majority government
    Labor 1.25% Minority government

Federal Lib/nats 0% for Majority and minority

  24. IMO Bean is at risk. Price will have deep funding pockets. Much deeper than Smith.
Which is why the Teals blocked electoral funding reform.

    Excellent! Please! More!

Because Australia is sitting right here to sell you tariff free shit, ready to go.

  26. The last series of the excellent Danish series Borgen is basically about the relationship between Denmark and Greenland and the level of autonomy.

There are possibilities of oil resources which would enable Greenland to become more independent from Denmark.

Also friction between Denmark and US regarding air bases with US not sharing all information with Denmark.

Regarding taxing unrealised gains what about pensioners living in houses valued over $5 million which they bought for a song years before.

  27. The Revisionist

I have gone through all that before in the USA threads.

I’m only going to reply to posters that are worth a response.

  28. Centre – just ignore the miserable labor haters. They’re just full of hate. Revisionist & HH are pathetic.

I wonder where “woke Albo” fucked off to after he fled Qld after his stupid photo ops, whilst Mr Dutton was flying in.
He probably pissed off to W.A. for some tennis practice.

    “I had to exercise”

“I had to eat” – Christine circa 2009.

  29. I am checking to see whether you all support Trump’s unilateral abrogation of our FTA and his unilateral trade punishment of Australia.

I am also checking to see whether you all support Dutton’s view that Trump is ‘shrewd’, ‘reasonable’ and ‘a great thinker’.

I am checking to see whether you think it reasonable that Trump treats allies with contempt while sucking up to megalomaniacal mass murderers. Like Duterte, Kim and Putin. Oceans of blood between them and Trump just loves them. (Dutton has the exact same attitude).

  30. paul A thinks it is great that Dutton was skulking in Sydney grubbing some money while his constituents were trying to get ready Alfred.
Sprung, Dutton did a runner back to Brisbane.
Where he spent the next four days and nights out of sight while his fellow Queenslanders faced the music.
Here is the icing on the cake for Dutton. Free lunches for bosses should earn him some nice free lunches… and here is the real beauty for Dutton. Those free lunches will be subsidised by the workers!
