US presidential election minus seven weeks

Still anyone’s guess as to who will occupy the White House come February, but it does seem that last week’s debate has moved the dial towards Kamala Harris.

Evidence is starting to emerge of a strengthening in Kamala Harris’s position in the wake of last week’s debate, and while this hardly amounts to a paradigm shift in terms of the popular vote – after rounding to whole numbers, The Economist’s poll aggregate records no change from Harris’s 50-46 lead when the debate was held on September 10 – it’s been enough to move forecast models substantially in her favour. Nate Silver’s model is the most striking case in point, with Trump’s win probability falling from 59.7% to 52.0% just over the past few days, having peaked at 64.4% the day before the debate. After bouncing around 52-48 for a couple of weeks, The Economist’s probability reading now has Harris leading 57-43. FiveThirtyEight’s model remains the most bullish for the Democrats, putting Harris’s win probability at 63%. More from Adrian Beaumont at The Conversation.

    The Lebanon official faces were filthy with rage.
    We all agree that Lebanon is not a disputed territory in any shape or form and Israel is currently trying to bomb, as per ABC News, to stone age (if you consider diplomatic language of UN Chief). They repeatedly bombed Lebanon capital Beirut.

    An Ohio law allowing citizens to file criminal charges is being used to target former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) over their comments about Haitians in Springfield.

    According to Fox 8, the Haitian Bridge Alliance filed criminal charges against the two Republican candidates at Clark County Municipal Court on Tuesday.

    “The criminal charges stem from the devastating harm of Trump’s and Vance’s baseless fearmongering that legal Haitian immigrants to the Ohio town are eating their neighbor’s pets,” Chandra Law Firm said.

    “The Haitian community is suffering in fear because of Trump and Vance’s relentless, irresponsible, false alarms, and public services have been disrupted,” lead counsel Subodh Chandra said in a statement. “Trump and Vance must be held accountable to the rule of law.     Pretty sure it was all the swing states plus a few extra. He’s all-in on boosting Trump. Guessing the NY thing is in some way vaguely because:

    – The state is not in play, electoral-college wise
    – The state has a large population
    – Peeling some votes off Harris decreases the magnitude of her popular-vote win

    Or could just be a vanity thing. Wanting to see how many votes he can actually get, in a state where it won’t disadvantage Trump.

    Committing aggravated menacing — by knowingly causing others to falsely believe that members of Springfield’s Haitian community would cause serious physical harm to the person or property of others in Springfield; and

    Violating the prohibition against complicity — by conspiring with one another and spreading vicious lies that caused innocent parties to be parties to their various crimes.

    The charges were filed in Clark County Municipal Court.

    Through the filing, the nonprofit asks the court to affirm probable cause and to issue arrest warrants.

    The court must have a hearing before rejecting the affidavit as part of the legal process.

    “The great question that has never been answered and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is ‘What does a woman want?’”

    Sigmund Freud didn’t know the answer to this question back in 1913. It remains a mystery to many in 2024.

    But what we do know now is that American women don’t want Donald Trump. In the latest NBC News poll, American men supported Trump by 52 percent to 40 percent. American women were for Kamala Harris by 58 percent to 37 percent.

    This confirms my long-held suspicion that women are in general a lot more sensible than men, have better judgment than men, and have a greater capacity than men to think for themselves. It is American women who’ve come to the altogether reasonable and evidence-based judgment that Harris will be a better president than Trump. It’s American men, swayed by suppressed emotions, unresolved anxieties, odd fixations, and—yes—a touch of hysteria, who support Trump.

    Trump finds this annoying. So he’s recently taken to lecturing American women that he’s their man. Last night, at a rally in Pennsylvania, he told women that “You will be protected, and I will be your protector.” He also informed them they “won’t be thinking about abortion.”

    This was a follow-up to Trump’s social media post late last week, in which he asserted, in all caps, that if he wins “WOMEN WILL BE HAPPY, HEALTHY, CONFIDENT AND FREE!” He went on, speaking directly to women, “YOU WILL NO LONGER BE THINKING ABOUT ABORTION.”

    So says a man who famously stated, “when you’re a star, they let you do it,” who was found liable for sexual abuse, who repeatedly boasts of overturning Roe. But this is Trump’s view: He should get to do what he wants to women. He should also get to tell women what to think. And of course women should be grateful to their beneficent guide and protector.

    Trump’s followers share this view.

    Trump’s handpicked Ohio Republican Senate nominee, Bernie Moreno, at a town hall in Warren County last Friday night, deplored the fact that some women choose to vote on the issue of abortion rights. Indeed, he continued, “It’s a little crazy, especially for women past 50. I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”

    So Moreno, like Trump, likes to tell women what issues they should care about. He’s even got this one conveniently broken down by women’s age.

    Of course, in his MAGA-male way, Moreno can’t seem to imagine anyone caring about anything for any reason other than the narrowest self-interest. Could women past 50 care about their daughters? Or about younger women in general? Or about personal freedom?

    Not in Moreno’s world.

    In Moreno’s world, and Trump’s, men act in their self-interest, and women are not to think for themselves.

Because they’re suspected of having been stolen by a malign foreign actor, likely Iran.

    Whoever is stealing the materials, the scope of their access is remarkable. Today, Popular Information’s Judd Legum reports that new materials are still being stolen: The same actors who have been shopping dirt on Trump to other outlets sent him a dossier yesterday containing information stolen from the Trump campaign within the last ten days.

    …more like 45% of intending voters, or about 30% of persons eligible to vote, affiliate in spite of everything with MAGA-madness. Around 2% of the US adult population has been disenfranchised by various legislative enactments, meaning the MAGA-bound make up a likely 29% of the voting-age population. This is enough for Trump to pose a profound threat to the rule of law and the constitutional order in the US.

    The US system is dysfunctional in many respects. It is extraordinary that ill-educated, poorly-paid, culturally-estranged, economically-exploited, geographically-marginalised white males should be prepared to so readily vote for the party of the billionaires….to vote against their own best interests.

    Hopefully their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters will save the US and the rest of us from MAGA-driven stupidities.

    Republicans running for office in North Carolina and around the country are distancing themselves from Mark Robinson, deleting photos of themselves side by side with the embattled Republican nominee for governor and removing any reference to his endorsement from their campaign materials.

    Robinson has become politically toxic since CNN reported on dozens of inflammatory comments he made on a pornography website’s message board more than a decade ago, including referring to himself as a “black NAZI,” expressing support for slavery, and making other lewd and sexually explicit remarks.

    At least 10 Republicans and conservative groups have either canceled events with Robinson or erased their digital footprints to distance themselves from the man they will share a ballot with this November.

    As it is, some text message polling says only 12% Muslims in Michigan want to vote for Harris. Michigan is very important for Harris path to victory.
    As per current polls Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania are within margin of error.

    San Francisco: After then-vice president Joe Biden swore in Kamala Harris as a United States senator in January 2017, they posed for a customary photo in the Capitol with her family. Then she asked her future boss for a favour: Would he indulge in one more photo?

    “Come on, everybody,” Harris said, waving in a dozen others. “My extended family is here.”

    The first member of Harris’ entourage to approach Biden just happened to be one of the richest people in the world: Laurene Powell Jobs.

    Powell Jobs, the philanthropist who controls a fortune worth more than $US11 billion, stood just behind Biden’s right shoulder, joining Harris’ best friend from kindergarten and others in her inner circle. As the photo was snapped and the group broke up, Biden grabbed a coveted 60 seconds with Powell Jobs – asking about her son and talking about his ambitions for cancer research.

    Few figures have cultivated a more consequential friendship with Harris, now the Democratic nominee for president, than Powell Jobs, who for decades was married to one of America’s most famous entrepreneurs, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple.

    Over the past 20 years, she has become one of Harris’ most essential confidants, providing counsel and money, and helping to expand Harris’ public profile. Now, in this year’s presidential race, the wealthiest woman in Silicon Valley has emerged as a powerful player behind the scenes. She has quietly contributed millions of dollars to an organisation backing Harris, according to three people briefed on the gifts.

    She played a hidden but key role in helping usher Biden out of the race, which cleared the way for a Harris run.
