YouGov: 52-48 to Labor (open thread)

Labor follows its Dunkley by-election win with better ratings for Anthony Albanese in one poll and a sharp improvement on voting intention in another.

The three-weekly federal poll from YouGov records little change on voting intention, with Labor steady at 32%, the Coalition up a point to 37%, the Greens up a point to 15% and One Nation down two to 6%, and Labor’s two-party lead steady at 52-48. However, Anthony Albanese personal ratings are improved, up four on approval to 44% and down three on disapproval to 50%, and his lead as preferred prime minister out from 45-38 to 48-34. Peter Dutton is at 39% approval and 49% disapproval, down two points on last time in net terms. The poll also records an 86-14 split in favour of the principle behind the recently passed “right to disconnect” laws. It was conducted February 24 to March 5 from a sample of 1539.

The rather more volatile weekly poll from Roy Morgan recorded a spike this week in favour of Labor, who lead 53.5-46.5 on two-party preferred after a dead heat last week, from primary votes of Labor 34% (up two-and-a-half), Coalition 36.5% (down one-and-a-half), Greens 13.5% (up one-and-a-half) and One Nation 3.5% (down one-and-a-half). The poll was conducted last Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1679.

The other big item of federal electoral news for the week was Monday’s Liberal preselection for Scott Morrison’s seat of Cook, where a by-election will be held on a date to be determined. The winner was Simon Kennedy, former McKinsey consultant and unsuccessful candidate for Bennelong in 2022, who won in the first round with 158 votes to Carmelo Pesce’s 90, Gwen Cherne’s 35 and Benjamin Britton’s 13.

  1. I predict Gwen Cherne will end up where outstanding female Liberals do for the most part. In the Senate.

Btw, have the Liberal Party selected the replacement for Marise Payne yet?

  2. “The poll also records an 86-14 split in favour of the principle behind the recently passed “right to disconnect” laws.”
Another Dutton scare campaign goes down in flames.

How long until the knives are out?

Can’t wait for the usual suspects to come in saying that Albo will be gone by Christmas.

  3. December 19, 2016.Rupert Murdoch – I’ve never asked any Prime Minister for anything.

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/dec/19/rupert-murdoch-ive-never-asked-any-prime-minister-for-anything

There is a quote from Murdoch, which he denies. But explains Brexit.

‘The quote was originally reported in the Evening Standard by Anthony Hilton, who wrote in February: “I once asked Rupert Murdoch why he was so opposed to the European Union. ‘That’s easy,’ he replied. ‘When I go into Downing Street they do what I say; when I go to Brussels they take no notice.’”

When asked by the Guardian, Hilton said: “I stand by my story.” He said Murdoch made the remarks in a conversation in the early 1980s, when Hilton was city editor of the Times. Hilton, now a columnist for the Evening Standard, has referred to the anecdote several times over the years without either a denial or a complaint from his former boss, until now.’

All politicians, including our Australian ones, desperately want favourable press from Murdoch media.
Will sacrifice any principles, fair policies for their constituents, to get it.

But is he really as powerful as politicians believe?

How to break the internet But in all seriousness, there’s a reason why reverse racism isn’t a thing. Racism is when prejudice is accompanied by the power to oppress, and is historically rooted. Here’s an excellent piece from Ronnie Gorrie on that: https://t.co/YeqsErhZ1M https://t.co/bZXoHZnxfi— Senator Lidia Thorpe (@SenatorThorpe) March 8, 2024
    —————————-
Senator Thorpe should read the Racial Discrimination Act because she is confusing political race theory and the law.

The court would look at the background of the people involved but the law is more concerned about how the person hearing it or seeing it feels about it than the intent of the person saying it or showing it so yes Sam Kerr’s comment could be racist but its a minor offense.

  5. It seems to me the UK case against Kerr is highly frivolous. While it is possible the UK has a different standard to Australia on this issue. Does anyone know if the UK has prosecuted anyone in the past for just calling a white, black or brown police officer a word describing their approximate skin colour followed by “bastard”. As i’m pretty sure those police officers at the higher melanin skin level cop this abuse a lot, i suspect. Which i suspect they ignore, as far as pressing charges is concerned, unless it goes a fair bit further than that.

Note: Kerr denies even using the word “bastard” but i’m interested if even abuse containing it makes the courts at all in the UK?.

  6. The poll also records an 86-14 split in favour of the principle behind the recently passed “right to disconnect” laws.

I wonder if MAGA Dutton still wants to roll back this law …?

  7. Off on a tangent.
If Libs or motor industry groups start the ” electric utes cant tow the boat or caravan bullshit” Albo needs to tell them to have a look at a diesel/ electric locomotive that hauls loads weighing hundreds of tons.
The diesel motor is a generator to make electricity to power the electric motors that drive the loco.
    They are basically electric locos.
When technology develops batteries big enough to replace those diesel generators it will make diesel obsolete.
There’s also a factory on the Central Coast of NSW which is already converting diesel semi trailers to electric ones…just like a car but on a bigger scale

  8. 12-15 months out from the next election, and voting intention seems to be settling in to a consistent 51-52% TPP for the Government. No evidence of any baseball bats. Governments tend to be returned at the Federal level in this country in such circumstances.

  9. On the UK Election polling, wow that’s grim for the Conservatives. It hasn’t been that bad since the leadup to Theresa May resigning in mid-2019, and before that the worst it got was in January 1995 that had their vote dip below 20%, although that was likely an outlier.

Reform’s vote meanwhile now seems to be trending to the low-mid teen% level. They’re at the stage where they could possibly match or exceed the Tory vote and that will definitely cause some panic for Sunak’s government.

Edit: Oh, and of course the disaster that was Liz Truss’s brief time in office.

  10. Excellent work by both Pocock senators saw the very popular right to disconnect amendment added to the closing the loopholes bill. The progressive crossbench are absolutely vital in propping up this Govt.

  11. Macarthur

Yes it’s taken sensible progressive crossbench amendments as well as the intervention of Gallagher and Chalmers re S3 to stabilise this Labor Govt.

Albo can continue to be the figurehead, but it’s clear there’s a need for sensible and competent people to steer the ship.

  12. Daughter: I really love Sam Kerr

Father: They say she called an English cop a stupid white bastard

Daughter: look dad I already said I loved her you don’t have to keep trying to sell her ….

Good Government always needs a good team. Which is why i have no problem with Biden as President. As he will be surrounded by a team who he will listen too. While Trump is totally different matter. As he doesn’t listen and thinks he knows best in all things. Plus will surround himself with idiots like himself too.

Note: By “surrounded by a good team”. I mean in the context of what is possible within the USA political spectrum. Which is fairly poor compared to more functional democratic standards.

Racism is when prejudice is accompanied by the power to oppress

    ——————————————-

And a history of oppression based on the colour of a person’s skin. The idea of a less advanced, less intelligent, less cultured, less civilised race – an inferior race; a theory of racial superiority invented by and perpetuated by white people.

The idea of white people getting all sensitive because the victims of their oppression use ‘white’ as an insult is pathetic. They don’t think you’re inferior, they just think you’re the privileged oppressors and they don’t like you. Suck it up.

  15. What will keep Labor’s primary vote down and sinking is their failure on stopping new fossil fuels and lack of rental support.

  16. Meanwhile Rupert takes another step in his effort to live forever & keep f**king democracy…

Rupert Murdoch decided that at 92, it was time to give up the reins of power at his media empire — but it seems he believes age is no barrier for new love, or a new marriage.

On Thursday, Mr. Murdoch’s office said that he planned to marry his girlfriend, Elena Zhukova, 67, a retired molecular biologist whom he started dating in the summer.

Combines love & molecular therapist in one….also gets closer to Putin

if Sam had passed out in the gutter the plod probably would’ve taken a photo of her in that state
and passed it around to their mates for shits and giggles… 😡

Where did the media in the UK get the information about what she supposedly said?. The UK police do have a reputation of leaking information, sometimes for money. Lucky our AFP would never do anything similar though?.

Albanese disapproval is worse than Duttons.

I am proud to be white people of colour are risking their lives to get into so called white run countries.Says it all!

Sam Kerr should apologise to the copper for her comment.
    ================================================

Only if she actually said it though?. Which she denies. The person who should really apologies is Sussan Ley. To the refugee she totally defamed and was innocence of what she accused him of. Even though her racist diatribe was magnitudes worse than anything Kerr may or may not have said. Sussan Ley will never apologise or even withdraw her slanderous comments i suspect.

I suspect many people are ashamed to be white. Due mainly to the actions and statements of people like you. It is very unfair to those people that grubs like you cause the rest to be judged in an unfair light though.

Quote: “one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel”

  23. White people have nothing to be ashamed of.

Racists are the people that have problems with peoples race.

You see the wacky lefties hate equal status for whites that’s because they are racist.

  25. I just listened to Biden’s State of the Union address. I was impressed. Strong and on point. He is not senile. He stuttered a few words, but made a lot of good points.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u42TQs4Pf2c

    A few really stood out:
    – USA has a minimum corporate tax rate of 15%, so no corporation pays zero. We must do the same. It would raise billions to pay for many social programs. Better education, health, public transport…
(Biden wants to raise the corporate minimum to 21%)
    – He intends to raise taxes on the wealthy and extend Affordable Care to include an expanded MediCare style subsidised pharmaceutical list

I love. A good tangent, sometimes I drop one in (bit like a silent fart) to breakup some of the circle-jerk that develops.
I agree with your electric motor statement completely. I’ve done countless thousands of kms of train and ship journeys where electric motors did the work. I’ve come across people who think my 150kw ev won’t pull a trailer because electric motors aren’t strong enough…complete crap!

  29. Hmmmm…

“The US Embassy in Russia and the UK Foreign Office have warned their citizens of possible terrorist attacks in Moscow within the next 48 hours.

[US Embassy in Russia:] “The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours.””

    https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/03/8/7445498/

  30. This article bears on the Bludger discussion about racism.

I find I disagree with those who make a false equivalence between black and white racism on the one hand and also that I disagree with those who assert that racism is only possibly by whites and that non-whites cannot possibly be racist because the only thing that counts is the dense history and terrible consequences of race-based discrimination.

Disentangling things here goes to the relations between groups and individual members of groups in any particular context.

Lets say she said it for argument sake. What about the second part of my statement?. Any examples of someone being taken to court in the UK for what she allegedly said?. Including variation on the actual colour used in the statement.

  32. Perhaps, the ‘apparently’ racially oppressed whites should stop attempting to draw equivalence where none exists. All they achieve is to wrap themselves in a moralist blanket crocheted with faux ‘white’ sensitivities. It’s beyond pathetic.
