Essential Research: Albanese approval and tax cuts (open thread)

Albanese’s strong ratings remain effectively unchanged; attitudes towards stage three tax cuts finely balanced.

The Guardian reports the fortnightly Essential Research poll includes the monthly question on Anthony Albanese’s leadership, recording 58% approval (down one) and 26% disapproval (up one). Respondents were also asked what appear to have been all-or-nothing questions on stage three tax cuts, finding 53-47 in favour of sticking with them rather than breaking an election promise regardless of the economic situation, and 52-48 against a more general proposition as to whether break election promises should ever be broken. However, the split in favour of keeping the tax cuts was 70-30 in favour among those who felt they were most likely to benefit compared with 60-40 for least likely. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1122 – there should be a good deal more from it when the full report is published later today.

UPDATE: Full report here.

  1. Although it doesn’t describe a unique concept or feeling, I’ve always liked the German word “die Vergangenheit” – for the past, with its literal connotation of “the state of having gone”. It’s a word that unpacks its own meaning.

    🙁

You haven’t been around long enough to realise what it gets like here without a Newspoll. We go nuckin’ futs and anything that isn’t a Newspoll is fair game. 😉

Hell no – they drive on the wrong side of the road like the Septics. At least here it’s the same as Oz.

Is driving on the left a monarchy thing? UK & Cringe (minus Canuks coz Big Sam) + the ex-Raj (& Nepal), Japan, Thai, Sweden (until 60’s). Did Napoleon cement the Jacobin subversion?

It’s mainly the former British colonies.

The weirdest place I’ve been to is Myanmar.

Being a former British colony they drove on the left, that was until they didn’t.

One day the Generals decided they didn’t want to anymore, so they changed to the right.

Of course all the vehicles are set up for driving on the left. The first time I was there I stayed with mate. One day we went out to the countryside. When we came up behind a truck his driver would slowly edge across until my mate could give the all clear.

That was an exciting day. 🙂

There is galgenhumor which is literally gallows humour. But no crying really.

The etymology of gluckschmerz (purported to be the antonym of schadenfreude) is interesting: https://www.wsj.com/articles/schadenfreude-is-in-the-zeitgeist-but-is-there-an-opposite-term-1434129186

OK. Now we’re gettin’ there. Glücksschmerz! Many thanks. I just knew there was a German word for it.

  6. I’m usually not one for conspiracies about buried polls, but if there isn’t a Newspoll tonight, I’m calling shenanigans. When was the last time they ever took a break this long outside of the Christmas holidays and right after an election?

  7. LOLs to all the Newspoll conspirators. Grow up.

The only poll that counts is the election that is TWO AND A HALF YEARS AWAY.

  8. The Diamonds seem t be attracting a lot of advice, I’m thinking those big money people are worried that their days of chucking a few bob at ‘deserving’ recipients and everyone saying “what good blokes they are” might be under threat.

  9. HH:

Polling isn’t just about predicting election results, it also provides a rough barometer of the government and oppositions standing with the public in the here and now, which influences media reporting and the broader political narrative. Look at just how many party leaders have met their end after one bad poll too many.

Exactly. It’s a measure of the temper of the times between elections.

  13. Just watching ABC 7pm News coverage of floods. Possibility that Lismore might face serious flooding for the 3rd time in 8 months.

Has Barnaby announced this is a 3 in 3500 year flood?

  14. @Asha agreed. News Corp finally have their man as Liberal leader after years of trying. We know how polls shape the narrative for leaders longevity, like you say. It is absolutely not in News Corp’s interest to regularly feed the public perception of Dutton as hopeless via regular diabolical Newspolls.

  15. These ongoing flooding catastrophes are further proof of life threatening climate change.

I did some google searches on this months ago (can’t remember the links).

My impression is that the decision countries’ made re which side of the road to use was usually related to that country’s attitude to Britain as cars were becoming a thing.

OK with Britain? Usually drive on the left. (Japan was never part of the Empire, but had an alliance with Britain from 1902-1921.)

Competitive or antagonistic to Britain? Drive on the right. (Canada, as you say, influenced by the Failed States.)

  17. Rex “We must as a country cease enabling the worlds biggest emitters with our fossil fuels.”

Which emitters are you referring to?

  18. C@t, one go-fund-me after the bushfires raised $15m. That would be a huge FU to the big money. I’ve had one bloke say to me beggars can’t be choosers and should I refuse $20 in the street from a big tobacco executive?
The lack of connection to the issues here are gob-smacking.

    —————————————-

Boerwar, please reassure us all that you are aware that targeting power generation across a country, including in areas not within an actual area of conflict, is a war crime. I refer you to the Rome Statute, Article 8, s2.a.iii,iv, s2.b.ii,iv,v. I hope you were just being academically Machiavellian, as it were. You do come across here as seriously being supportive of Russia’s war crime. I hope you can reassure me I am mistaken.

    Thanks Dog’s Brunch.

I recall the donation drives in response to the Asian tsunami of about 2004. There was a fundraising cricket match and people donated hundreds of thousands of dollars. Of course, there were tens of thousands of people there, so the average donation was about $10 per head. K Packer made a donation of something like $100k, which was probably a similar proportion of his income as the $10 per head was for everyone else.

But pay tax? Not KP. Too generous, clearly.

  24. MacArthur there were only two clear lessons from the Allied strategic bombing campaign in World War 2.

    AND:

    Terima Kasih banyak! Bon Soir.
