Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

Labor maintains its solid two-party lead in Newspoll as Scott Morrison slides into net negative personal ratings.

The latest Newspoll from The Australian finds Labor retaining its 53-47 two-party lead from three weeks ago, with both major parties steady on 39% of the primary vote, the Greens up one to 11% and One Nation steady on 3%. Scott Morrison has fallen into net negative approval for the first time since March last year, being down four points on approval to 47% and up the same amount on disapproval to 49%. Anthony Albanese is steady on both approval and disapproval at 38% and 46% respectively, and has narrowed Morrison’s lead on preferred prime minister from 51-33 to 49-36.

Also included are ratings for Scott Morrison’s handling of coronavirus in general, on which his good rating is down four points since last time to 48% and his poor rating is up four to 49%, and of the vaccine rollout in particular, on which he is down two to 38% and up two to 59%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1527.

  1. Victoria records 11 new local COVID-19 cases as Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital exposed

Victoria has recorded 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases.

All are linked to known outbreaks, but only one of those new cases was in quarantine while infectious.

They were detected from 38,987 test results processed on Sunday.

The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital at St Albans is among the latest exposure sites linked to the state’s Delta outbreak.

Western Health’s executive director of operations Natasha Toohey said in a statement a patient who visited the hospital last Friday had tested positive and contact tracing efforts were underway.

[‘Taliban fighters seized most of the capital of northern Afghanistan’s key Kunduz province on Sunday, and took another neighbouring provincial capital after a month-long siege. The advances were the latest in a series of blows to government forces as US troops complete their pullout after nearly two decades in the country.’]

With Kabul likely to soon fall, the 20-year war in Afghanistan hasn’t really worked out the way the US and its allies had planned – shades of Vietnam:

Why Was this war even started?

It’s not really like Vietnam, there the goal was to stop the communist from taking control, whilst in Afghanistan the Taliban were in power at the start and they will be again at the end.

  4. So you’ve read the ALP policy platform, Frednk. I did once; a while ago. Has it still got that bit in it about the “democratic socialisation of the means of production.” I quite liked that “light on the hill” stuff, even though nobody meant it.

It seems to me that the party platform is less than binding, and is not often adhered to by the parliamentary wing of the party. I accept that this is how it now works, but I fell that I can still be disappointed when Albanese, Marles and Wong back away from a call for transparency in relation to the receipt and use by business of Jobkeeper funds.

I wonder who Jeff Kennett is blaming for the hawthorn members who want him to resign as president of the footy club?

Good question and good final observation, IMO. What WAS depressing was marching against this war with a very lonely band of protestors. What IS even more depressing is that we are sleepwalking to joining a war against China over Taiwan. Howard was a sleazebag toady crawling to Bush on Afghanistan. Morrison, a man who uses shitting his pants in Macca’s to distract from Covid, would do ANYTHING at all to distract from Covid. He is, in any case, surrounded by China War Hawks.

  9. And interesting that there is very little gender difference re Morrison’s handling of COVID but govt net rating for vaccine rollout is a massive 14 points worse from female voters than male. #Newspoll”

I’d suggest more women have experience of what a vaccine rollout or any other health campaign looks like? More working in health, and more mothers involved in vaccinating their kids than fathers. Women head to their GPs more often than men in general? Pure speculation.

  10. The name and whereabouts of the guy who sexually assaulted are tightly sealed like never before. Why is it? I understand the concept of innocent until proven guilty. But that did not stop many of theLabor, Liberal, Nats, Greens MPs being exposed or talked about.
We have not seen him when he is charged.
Can anybody explain why so much secrecy surrounds. LNP is dragged in the mud, PM name is besmirched but there is absolutely no backgrounding of him. Whereas the backgrounding of Higgins boyfriend, Higgins, Banks, Joyce, Gladys and Joyce’s girlfriend was aplenty. Why so much secrecy about this guy? Just wondering.

The Australian public (if these polls are to be believed) are fools for forgetting/forgiving our Prime Minister-in-Hiding’s response to the bushfires last year. While I think it’s dead certain that this COVID mess will not be ‘over’ by the next election, have they really wised up much since then?

No people did not forget lastyear bushfires if you look at the results of Eden-Monaro( one of most affected areas of busfires) by-election result, which was conducted after COVID was successfully suppressed last year.

  19. lizzie @ #147 Monday, August 9th, 2021 – 8:24 am

Deluded Kennett can’t believe that the majority loathed him, so he thinks that all responses to his statements must be an organised attack by the Premier’s office. I think that Dan has more to worry about than a political has been.

There is no doubt, whenever I tweet, whatever the subject many respond immediately. You don’t have to guess who is so organised. The social media group in the Premiers office, paid for by Victorians, but not paid to abuse and spread falsehoods

Remind me how many hundreds of paid social media functionaries and media advisers in general the Coalition have? Not to mention that the Victorian Liberals would not be averse to helping their state-based mates.

Honestly, it’s not a very smart tactic to lay into social media defenders of Dan Andrews because, if anyone has a sophisticated understanding of Twitter et al, then they would know that you don’t stir up the hornet’s nest by saying something provocative in a Tweet, or other kind of social media post, because it will come back with double the strength of what you are complaining about. 😀

[‘Why Was this war even started?’]

The reason, so the story goes, was to counter Al Qaeda which was seeking sanctuary in Afghanistan, in the wake of 9/11.

[‘It’s not really like Vietnam, there the goal was to stop the communist from taking control, whilst in Afghanistan the Taliban were in power at the start and they will be again at the end.’]

Well, it could be argued that the ends were similar in both conflicts/wars, those ends being to stop Al Qaeda from taking a foothold & regrouping in Afghanistan, presumably under the auspices of the Taliban; and, in the case of Vietnam, to stop the no-good Commies from overthrowing a government, propped up by Uncle Sam. That said, both conflicts served no useful purpose – Vietnam united and the Taliban are almost back in control.

Not sure how long that Senate Enquiry into Murdoch will run, but it may limit how rabid they can get before the coming election. Thanks Kevin for that much at least

The reason, so the story goes, was to counter Al Qaeda which was seeking sanctuary in Afghanistan, in the wake of 9/11.

What a shame for that story that Bin Laden had been under virtual house arrest for several months before the invasion and the Taliban offered to hand him over if the US showed them evidence Osama was involved in 9/11 . Information that the government of the 3 war crims Dubya+Cheney+Rummy kept secret until a couple of years after the invasion.

Exactly. The most important ‘Freedom’ we should all expect is the freedom not to be infected with dangerous lies being spread by a political party and their stooges whose only guiding ‘principle’ is their lust for power.

And the ‘freedom’ not to be infected with COVID-19 by the people who listen to them. 🙂

  26. Covid is a left wing conspiracy to attack our way of life!

Described as Morrison’s “spiritual mentor”, Pastor Houston faces 2 years in the slammer if convicted for failing to report child sexual abuse; five, if his alleged failure involved an inducement. Given he was born in New Zealand, and depending on whether he’s an Oz citizen, if convicted he would face deportation on character grounds.

I am not gambler except putting some bets on office sweep stakes for a few Melbourne cups for fun sake.

But I want to wager a bet that he will not be convicted. Not because the case is weak but because powerful religious people bare not. What about Pell you say. His conviction is squashed isn’t it? I resty case. 🙂

Something that struck me at the time that I first saw Gladiator: how exactly could anyone in the Roman world have three cognomen, but no first name, or surname according to the Roman order of naming …Romans (by which I mean any Roman citizen – whether a native of the eternal city, or the Italian peninsula or from a colony, such as in Spain, as Rusty’s character hailed).

  34. I think Israel is only at ~60% fully vaccinated. Herd immunity for covid is estimated to require anywhere from 70% to 90%, but we still don’t really know for sure.

Our government says 60% to 70%, who knows why. Seems like wishful thinking to me.

Gladys works her butt off for the people of nsw. Who wants her to work 24/7? You are so unreasonable. Let’s be honest: The Premier merely follows the medical advice to the letter. She has put all safeguards in place, as advised by the medical experts, and she is entitled to a day off. Are you crazy?

It’s why I’m not getting too excited about any poll results right now. If, even in the depths of their incompetence, people will still stand up and find a way to make apologies for the Premier, and the Prime Minister, then you just have to know the election isn’t over until Antony Green calls it.

I will add a corollary to that. Not until last vote is counted and EC declares results for each seat. 🙂
