Newspoll: 50-50

The Coalition’s lead disappears altogether in the latest Newspoll, which also records a resounding bounce in Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings.

Newspoll has turned in a result for its three-weekly federal poll which, if nothing else, shows it’s not letting the May election result prevent it from publishing optimistic-looking numbers for Labor. As related in The Australian ($), the latest poll has the major parties tied on two-party preferred, after four successive results of 51-49 in favour of the Coalition.

The Coalition is down two on the primary vote to 40%, with Labor up two to 35%, the Greens down one to 12% and One Nation up one to 7%. Anthony Albanese enjoys some encouraging movement on personal ratings, with approval up five to 42% and disapproval down seven to 37%. However, Scott Morrison’s ratings are little changed, with approval down one to 46% and disapproval down two to 43%, and his lead as preferred prime minister narrows only marginally, from 47-32 to 46-32.

The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1682.

  1. Pell would be as equally likely to be allowed to dress up as Santa at the prison Xmas party as get bail pending the High Court hearing.

The test for bail in the High Court would be along the lines of a very strong appeal and given that special leave wasn’t granted but rather referred to the full bench, the threshold cannot be met.

Bret Walker SC is not in the business of running shithouse applications.

  2. Shellbell

What is the record of the High Court regarding overturning Victorian Court Appeal decisions? I think you have told us before but I have forgotten.

  3. Steve777

“In the Liberal-Murdoch dictionary, “Socialist” is a term of abuse directed at opponents, and “socialism” likewise is used to denigrate any policies that go against the interests of their mates and major donors. Synonyms for “socialist” include “poo-poo head” plus a lot of words that I won’t repeat in such polite company.”
    ——

    That’s funny.

On PB “socialist/ism” is a term of abuse most commonly used by Labor (right wing?) bloggers.

To them Barnaby Joyce is a dreaded socialist. 🙂

  4. Shellbell:

You need to think outside the box. I repeat, there’s nothing precluding a bail application on Pell’s part.
Why should an ostensible innocent man spend another night in the slammer? Think de Bonoian, rather than blindly relying on stare decisis. As for Walker, I think he’s overrated, the legal equivalent of Saint Jude.

  5. shellbell:

    [‘Disproportionately high in recent years.’]

What you’ve failed to supply is what were the nature of the cases that the High Court overturned. Was it not the propensity of the Victoria Court of Appeal to overturn jury verdicts?

  6. “It appears the researcher’s work the domestic violence campaigner based her comments on showed an increase in domestic violence numbers after a severe bushfire but never accused firefighters of that abuse.”

So, idiots jumping on what they think they heard someone say, rather than what someone actually said then? Glad we never see that here.

Interesting Barnyard is now implicitly linking Climate Change and Bushfires. 🙂

“”There are a range of things that affect the climate and on a global scale, you should be part of it, and acknowledge it would have an effect and I acknowledge that there are other issues as well,” he said. There’s just the the oscillation of the seasons. There’s a change in the magnetic field of the sun.”

The whole “suns magnetic field” causes warming, not “CO2” causes warming, has from time to time been a theme of the RWNJobbie Denialatii. NutterTruckers were big on that for a while so that gives you some idea of its credibility as a theory.

Whatever, its certainly Barnyard blaming these bushfires on a supposed mechanism for Global Warming. 🙂

    How Good is That!! 🙂

  8. Shellbell

    Thanks. I that’s what I thought I remembered.

    Mavis.

I want true justice. If as the jury found he is guilty I don’t want that overturned without good reason.

That is true reasonable doubt was discarded. I am of the better one guilty people go free rather than one innocent doesn’t philosophy.
Some areas that principle is hard to stick to.

  9. Bloody Libs are politicising everything.

This in an email just received:

The new way to announce ARC research funding

The ARC has adopted a new funding announcement process whereby outcomes may be first released under embargo, as per the ARC’s embargo policy which is available here. For the ARC’s purposes, an embargo is the prohibition of publicising information provided by the ARC until a certain date or until certain conditions have been met. It is understood that an embargo may be lifted by local MPs in conjunction with the Minister for Education. For example, two universities were recently able to announce their DECRA outcomes due to their embargos being lifted by their local MPs. UQ has contacted its local MP to seek permission to release its current DECRA results.

  10. 3z,

    Yeah, exactly.

The whole process of lifting an embargo with the involvement of the Minister is rubbish. Thankfully the Minister and MPs have nothing to do with the process – that’s why we have the ARC – so they can gagf if they want to try and take the credit for it, especially with the shortage of research funding available in Australia atm.

  13. This being a blog about stats and all, William if you catch a glance at this. A really good data set to get a hold of, would be to break down the SA1 areas that are affected by fire over this summer.
If you can find damage report information or something similar and categorize it, then you could lay that across voting intention and Federal and State electoral divisions.
It’s be interesting to see what the poling response is over about the next year. We should get a a few state polls over time and maybe federal stuff that may capture a pretty interesting dataset on how poeple respond to fires, drought, famine and, flood.

And because the tech industry is dominated by men, the vast majority of those CVs came from men, and the system learned to downgrade women. 20. ‘Devastating testimony’: Experts stunned after Bill Taylor drops an ‘unexpected bombshell’ at impeachment hearing

Ambassador Bill Taylor on Wednesday dropped a new bombshell during impeachment hearings in the House of Representatives.

During his testimony, Taylor revealed one of his aides had overheard a conversation between President Donald Trump and European Union ambassador Gordon Sondland in which the president pressed the ambassador to get Ukraine on board with “the investigations” into former Vice President Joe Biden.

This conversation occurred on July 26th, or one day after Trump’s infamous phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he repeatedly pressed for the Ukrainian government to launch an investigation of the company that had formerly employed Biden’s son.

This new revelation caught many national security experts and reporters off guard, and many described it as “devastating.”

“Last Friday, a member of my staff told me of events that occurred on July 26,” Taylor testified.

“Following that meeting, in the presence of my staff at a restaurant, Ambassador Sondland called President Trump and told him of his meetings in Kyiv,” Taylor testified. “The member of my staff could hear President Trump on the phone, asking Ambassador Sondland about ‘the investigations.’”

“Ambassador Sondland told President Trump that the Ukrainians were ready to move forward,” Taylor added.

Taylor’s staff member asked Sondland what the president thought about Ukraine, and the acting ambassador was troubled by his State Department colleague’s response.

“Ambassador Sondland responded that President Trump cares more about the investigations of Biden, which Giuliani was pressing for,” Taylor testified. “At the time I gave my deposition on October 22, I was not aware of this information. I am including it here for completeness.”

  21. ‘I would not defend such a policy’: Impeachment witness Taylor describes fierce confrontation with Pompeo over Ukraine

Ambassador Bill Taylor on Wednesday delivered explosive testimony in which he said he told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that he would not defend the Trump administration’s decision to withhold military aid from Ukraine unless it agreed to launch investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden.

While testifying before Congress, Taylor explained why it was so dangerous with hold up aid to Ukraine during a time when it is at war with Russian-backed separatists.

“I saw in withholding military aid to Ukraine at a time when hostilities were still active in the east and when Russia was watching closely to gauge the level of American support for the Ukrainian government,” he said. “The Russians, as I said at my deposition, would love to see the humiliation of President Zelenskyy at the hands of the Americans. I told the Secretary that I could not and would not defend such a policy.”

I’d say you may be right as far as it goes. But, you’re really just cherry picking and missing the broader point..

The biggest criticism of the Greens and the Nats afaic is that at a time when fellow Australians were dying, property and livelihoods were being destroyed and there is genuine fear and concern in the community about the likely further devastation about to be reeked on the community, we have Nats, Greens and their fellow travellers more interested in ramping up the hateful rhetoric, playing the blame game, covering their arses and not showing the leadership that the situation demanded.

There will be inquiries in to this latest swathe of fires and Governments, people and organisations will be made accountable. However, people using the situation to score these petty political points is disgusting and not what was required.
