BludgerTrack: 53.2-46.8 to Labor (still)

No new grist for the BludgerTrack mill this week, but there’s a Greenpeace-sponsored federal poll and some preselection news to relate.

There haven’t been any new polls this week, so the headline to this post isn’t news as such – the point is that a new thread is needed, and this is it. Developments worth noting:

• We do have one new poll, but it was privately conducted and so doesn’t count as canonical so far as BludgerTrack is concerned. The poll in question was conducted by uComms/ReachTEL for Greenpeace last Wednesday from a sample of 2134, and has primary votes of Coalition 38.8%, Labor 36.7%, Greens 9.7% and One Nation 6.1%. A 53-47 two-party split is reported based on respondent-allocated preferences, but it would actually have been around 51.5-48.5 based on preferences from 2016. The poll also features attitudinal questions on carbon emissions and government priorities, which you can read all about here.

• The Greens have landed a high-profile candidate in Julian Burnside, human rights lawyer and refugee advocate, to run against Josh Frydenberg in the normally blue-ribbon Melbourne seat of Kooyong. This further complicates a contest that already featured independent hopeful Oliver Yates, former Liberal Party member and chief executive of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

• The Liberal preselection to choose a successor to Julie Bishop in Curtin will be determined by a vote of 60 delegates on Sunday. Initial reports suggested the front-runners were Celia Hammond, former vice-chancellor of Notre Dame University, and Erin Watson-Lynn, director of Asialink Diplomacy at the University of Melbourne, which some interpreted as a proxy battle between bitter rivals Mathias Cormann and Julie Bishop. However, both have hit heavy weather over the past week, with concerns raised over Hammond’s social conservatism and Watson-Lynn’s past tweets critical of the Liberal Party. Andrew Tillett of the Financial Review reports that some within the party believe a third nominee, Aurizon manager Anna Dartnell, could skate through the middle.

Tom Richardson of InDaily reports moderate faction efforts to install a male candidate – James Stevens, chief-of-staff to Premier Steve Marshall – in Christopher Pyne’s seat of Sturt are prompting a slew of conservative-aligned women to nominate against him. These include Deepa Mathew, a manager at the Commonwealth Bank and state candidate for Enfield last year; Joanna Andrew, a partner with law firm Mellor Olsson; and Jocelyn Sutcliffe, a lawyer with Tindall Gask Bentley. However, Stevens remains the “overwhelming favourite”.

  1. “Yeah nah. “I throw things at my staff and I advocate Medicare-For-Some.”

    Not a compelling pitch.”

Not a compelling smudge. You make for a pretty hopeless left ugly.

Why don’t you and Tulusi go out for a bit a Muslim bash in Mumbai with her BJP buddies. You could do that on your way over for sundowners with her bestie The Donald at Mar-a-largo by Monday.

    Re TPOF @8:14PM.
The article also says that the ‘Day of prayer’ for George Pell has been cancelled. Doesn’t say whether it was because they decided that it was a bad idea or because of lack of interest.

Likely the latter is because of the former. The whole idea is a terrible look for the catholic church which is supposed to be showing a new side to the public, not clinging to the cover up vestiges of the past.

  3. David, At one point Daley quoted a number from a government Minister and the next thing Gladys was saying that that was Daley’s number. “You just said it!”

    She wasn’t listening.

  4. Dayley was good in the debate. Stayed on message despite Gladys continued “just tell the truth” interruptions.
Gladys sounded shrill, like a petulant schoolgirl.

  5. “The article also says that the ‘Day of prayer’ for George Pell has been cancelled. Doesn’t say whether it was because they decided that it was a bad idea or because of lack of interest.”
They may have been worried about protestors. It would be very tempting for child abuse victims to turn up at the church.

  6. Dio:

I don’t know why Pell’s supporters can’t just let the verdict lie and wait for the appeal process to wash through.

It’s not a good look for these church leaders to be publicly defending a convicted pedophile and praying for justice for him, not the church’s millions of victims the world over.

Adrian, what annoyed me is that every time Gladys interrupted the producer would give her the camera shot.

Yes, but despite the ABC’s best efforts it worked against her, because when she didn’t think the camera was on her she was scowling at Dayley, but as soon as she thought she was on camera, this fake smile would appear.

“I’m not calling for us to pull out now,” Mr Abbott told a candidate forum.
“Circumstances have changed … we’ve got a new Prime Minister and a new Energy Minister.”

If there was ever any doubt what a complete nut this guy is he’s removed it. He was willing to undermine the global commitment to stop global warming because of a grudge against MT.

He’s no nut, he’s just a liar and con man. A terrible human being who the voters of Warringah have a duty to remove from the national political scene.

  9. “David, At one point Daley quoted a number from a government Minister and the next thing Gladys was saying that that was Daley’s number. “You just said it!”

    She wasn’t listening.”

Correct, but the number Daley was quoting was Tony Shepherd’s number in his letter claiming it would cost $700 million to refurbish the existing stadium, juts after she claimed it would cost about half that (I didn’t quite get her number but it was over $300 million). I call shenanigans on both numbers.

She also made much of the pure piss-ant debating point that Daley “shifted” his position – yesterday the election was a referendum on the stadium, today it was emblematic. I’m sure that a high school debating adjudicator would mark her up on that but the point will be lost on the public.

  10. “Dayley was good in the debate. Stayed on message despite Gladys continued “just tell the truth” interruptions.”

Did well…particularly as a fairly new opposition leader. And i think he has better name recognition now that he’s openly got suck into that pig Alan Jones,

Gladys looked to me to be begging. Not a good look for an incumbent.

  11. The Right’s climate policy is “innumerate idiocy” – why didn’t Malcolm do something while he was PM?

“I don’t know why Pell’s supporters can’t just let the verdict lie and wait for the appeal process to wash through.”

Like I said, its personal motivation. Accepting the Pell verdict means they have to admit to themselves that they accepted the moral wisdom of a convicted pedophile. It means admitting to themselves they were fooled. Lots of catholics (and ex catholics like me) saw Pell as a nasty piece of work decades ago. Those who didn’t were kidding themselves. Plus he pandered to their conservative prejudices, which now look like shite.

I don’t know why they are surprised. How many of those evangelistic right wing American preachers turn out to have similar vices?

The cult leaders are just desperate to hold on to the power and privilege they’ve had all these years. They’re losing their grip slowly but surely.

  14. I also think the reason Gladys Berejiklian interrupted Michael Daley so much was in order to drown out Daley when he was making an effective point about her government.

  15. If the Coalition pulls down the stadiums as far as I’m concerned an incoming Labor should just leave holes in the ground. Anyone who wants a new stadium or two can pay for them.

  16. Did Daley rule out any state govt subsidies for the proposed new coal fired power stations in NSW if he’s elected ?

  17. “I also think the reason Gladys Berejiklian interrupted Michael Daley so much was in order to drown out Daley when he was making an effective point about her government.”

    I’m sure it’s a deliberate strategy.

  18. Why don’t you and Tulusi go out for a bit a Muslim bash in Mumbai with her BJP buddies.

Why don’t you waddle off into the 1990s when your centrist claptrap was all the rage? You have little insight into contemporary politics. Shoo.

I also think the reason Gladys Berejiklian interrupted Michael Daley so much was in order to drown out Daley when he was making an effective point about her government.

People (apart from blind partisans) absolutely hate this. It’s the surest way to lose votes. As long as Daley stayed consistent I think he would be happy with the encounter.

  20. Like I said, its personal motivation. Accepting the Pell verdict means they have to admit to themselves that they accepted the moral wisdom of a convicted pedophile. If you’re a priest or a ‘man of god’ aren’t your ecclesiastical wisdom and advice meant to be predicated on the notion that you are a selfless vessel of the ‘almighty’, and therefore your
preachings and teachings are supposedly what ‘he’ dictates, not what your ego determines?

I say this of course as an atheist who has no understanding of the catholic church teachings.

  21. Turnbulls intervention today nicely timed for the next newspoll.

Abbotts chicanery today should also affect newspoll.

    I’m going 56-44 to Labor.

    Shorten the luckiest politician ever.

  22. “Why don’t you waddle off into the 1990s when your centrist claptrap was all the rage? You have little insight into contemporary politics. Shoo.”

Most people don’t live in your imaginary world. But please, tell me – in your universe how are you going to get all us centrists to go along with your claptrap? You need our votes. Just like we need yours. What is your plan to make common cause to defeat conservatism?

  23. Yes he ruled it out Rex.
No coal mine built in nsw, Dayley doubts there will ever be a coal power station ever built again in the country, said renewables are the way to go.
    He gets it.

Corporatist trickle down politics that the centre right champions doesn’t work. That’s the truth and the people are waking up to it.

  25. Excellent.

An analysis of recent polls from November of 2018 to March 2019 shows Sanders is more popular with people of color than white people, and women like Sanders as much as men do, if not more. He leads every other possible 2020 contender with Latino voters and lags behind only Joe Biden — who hasn’t announced a bid yet — with African-American voters. Sanders’ polling numbers with black voters are double that of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), according to a March Morning Consult poll.

  26. The politicians who win elections are those who successfully detect and follow the flow of ideas and events in their times. Pushing against the flow of public opinion will not work. The trick is to win without compromising your underlying position so you have capital to exploit to advance what you believe needs to be done.

Shorten has done an excellent job in both respects.

    Previous examples: Whitlam, Hawke, Howard

Abbott blew the initial success, as did Turnbull because they missed the “trick”

Good on him if he’s telling the truth.

Has he said anything about subsidising the rebuilding of existing CFPS’s ?

I imagine a benefit concert for Rolf Harris or a comedy evening for Bill Cosby would go the same way.

What no media person will say to Simon Birmingham post a Coalition election loss –

“Mr. Birmingham, prior to the election you said, and I quote,

“When it comes to the crunch almost anybody could have beaten Bill Shorten.”

My question is – how in last August’s leadership contest did the Liberal Party manage to choose Scott Morrison as leader, as he must have been by your reckoning at least one of the few people capable of losing to Bill Shorten”

  32. “Corporatist trickle down politics that the centre right champions doesn’t work. That’s the truth and the people are waking up to it.”

If you are referring to the modern day political centre, that’s a beautiful straw man you have constructed there Rexy.

  33. Diogenes

Interesting to read Peter Beattie saying that “every phone being a camera” is a bigger problem than the (mis)behaviour of some NRL players.

So if nothing was ever captured in photos or video, there would be no problem then?
