Morrison 45, Dutton 40

Scott Morrison is Australia’s sixth prime minister in eleven years, having prevailed in the second round of the party room vote by 45 votes to 40. Julie Bishop was eliminated after the first round: there are reports the vote was Dutton 38, Morrison 36 and Bishop 11. Josh Frydenberg replaces Julie Bishop after nearly eleven years as deputy, having won 46 votes against 20 for Steve Ciobo and 16 for Greg Hunt. Over to you.

  1. One thing I’d be interested to know is the numbers in the first round of the leadership vote.

    Anyone heard? 🙂

  2. The barbarians are very close to seizing the citadel. They will not rest until they’ve done it or destroyed in the attempt.

  3. God, I can’t listen to the ABC any more. Vanstone WTTE “The losers are those who wanted to get rid of the Prime Minister!”

  4. Andrew Probyn tries to inject some reality

He points out that Morrison was architect of Corporate Tax Cuts
and of course Frydenberg the NEG.

    What a dynamic duo!

Hearing that Dutton polled 38, Morrison 36 and Bishop 11 in the first ballot. #auspol.

  6. Every time I come back to look at the ABC ‘PK’ is blathering on. Barry Casidy (not BC!) looks as though he’s getting sick of it too.

She’s essentially correct. The RW used Dutton as the battering ram to demolish Turnbull. They achieved that, but they failed to instal their own candidate. They lost, after doing immense harm to the Liberal Party.

  8. So Morrison got the hospital pass, and Dutton’s camp will likely aim for leader in opposition. Labor could probably campaign for a solid majority on the basis that we’re going to see a highly destructive, ideological opposition of the kind Abbott led.

  9. 2pm Turnbull.

Will he resign like he said he will, or will he cower to the backbench? Because his counterpart back in.

  10. I can’t believe it. After all Australia’s struggles, we eventually get this. My forebears and their friends are better off dead.

  11. Indeed.

Dutton may have lost but he’s surely won the prize for the single most inept leadership challenge in Australian history? And will keep it for a long time after this.

  12. Some LNP dunderhead much earlier said that the whole problem started with Labor.

Everything is Bill Shorten’s fault. 🙁

  14. Interesting to see how Morrison goes in his first address to the people as the leader of the nation. Off-beam messaging could cost him dearly here. Hadn’t really had much time to practice his speech. Despite his path to victory here I don’t really see him as a Jim Hacker practising his Churchillian oratory over sherries with his wife. Superficial stuff I know but he’ll be under the public microscope now and PR does count.

The one problem with that is that the Potato thinks he needs the PMship to keep his seat. 🙂

  16. What I won’t be able to cope with is the chorus of lickspittles saying that they knew this was going to happen and Morrison is the New messiah.
    I want to vomit already.

I hear he’s heading for the Hunter Valley to find a coal mine as a backdrop. 🙂

You’re assuming this is over. I don’t think it is.

  19. If Morrison is as smart as they are saying he is he will try and model after NSW government. Velvet fist version of the LNP.

If so expect to see Labor’s 45% target looked at. Maybe 35% from Morrison for emissions.

Morrison knows he has nothing to lose by doing real policy here the wreckers are going to wreck.

  20. Amanda Vanstone did make the observation that, from her experience, if Abbott does not get what he wants, he will be destructive.

Wow, why didn’t she tell us back in the day when it was needed?

By the way, Malcolm Turnbull is the first main party leader to thwart his challenger with a third candidate since Simon Crean outsmarted the Beazley roosters and gave us Mark Latham in Dec 2003. Go easy on the handshake @ScottMorrisonMP

  22. “Some legislators only wish to vengeance against a particular enemy.
Others only look out for themselves.
They devote very little time on the consideration of any public issue.
They think that no harm will come from their neglect.
They act as if it is always the business of somebody else to look after this or that.
When this selfish notion is entertained by all, the commonwealth slowly begins to decay. ”
