ReachTEL: 53-47 to Liberal in Bennelong

The latest Bennelong by-election poll suggests John Alexander is set to hold on in the face of a solid swing to Labor.

The Sydney Morning Herald today has results from a ReachTEL poll for the Bennelong by-election, which credits John Alexander with a lead of 53-47 on respondent-allocated preferences – a swing to Labor of nearly 7%. The primary votes, after allocating a forced response follow-up from the (unusually small) 2.4% who initially professed themselves undecided, are 41.3% for John Alexander (down 9.1% on the election), 36.3% for Kristina Keneally (up 7.8%), 7.5% for the Greens (down 1.6%) and 14.9% for the rest. The poll was conducted on Tuesday from a sample of 819. This is the second ReachTEL poll of the campaign, the first being conducted a month ago and showing Alexander leading 54-46. The other two published polls, a Galaxy poll at the start of the campaign and Newspoll this week, both had it at 50-50. Multiple reports suggest party polling has been nearer to ReachTEL’s findings.

For all the background you could want, my Bennelong by-election guide is now updated and much expanded.

  1. Yeah Big D,

I think celibacy is a wank (sic), but I think paedophiles are attracted to churches rather than a product of them. The rot set in when churches protected them to protect their own image.

  2. Casefile is my favourite podcast.
Try the latest one, the Kimberly Murders. This is beforePeter Falconio and Joanna Rees, and is about a killer targeting people in the Kimberley Ranges.

IMO People should be made aware that while most people in the Outback are friendly and helpful, it is also a good place for persons with evil intent to roam unheeded and so normal care for safety should be taken. Just because a person is a ‘bushie’ does not automatically make them a saint.

  3. The best time to plant a tree? 30 years ago. Best time for Paul Kelly to retire? Well, judging by that turgid opinion piece shown above, some time before 17/11/2012.

  4. Question
Probably, i do not remember, but it is a link I would be likely to post.
I have not been game to listen to that one, I think I would get so angry I would break something.

The podcast about that anti-drugs campaigner in Griffith being murdered is an eye opener too.

There is also one about a mother being killed about the same time as she was going to report a Catholic priest for child sex abuse. Still unsolved, the finger has been pointed inside the local church. I will look for it for you.

Someone here put me onto this podcast ages ago. Sorry can’t remember who. Anyway, this episode is about a Catholic cop who blew the whistle. EDIT: On child abuse.

One of the really good aspects of the way the investigation and RC has gone is that it is Catholics exposing Catholics, Anglicans exposing Anglicans etc so it cannot be accused of any sectarianism.

I suspect the various denominations are also discovering their shared humanity and boundaries are breaking down even further.

As an LNP loyal member i don’t want Shorten in the lodge and I will do anything to help my beloved LNP stay in government and continue the jobs and growth programme this country needs and only the LNP will look after the people of this country.

Shorten will only look after his corrupt mates in the unions and Turnbull will look after the hard working people of this country

It’s OK Wayne, you can take a break now. Your mission is complete. You have convinced us you are totally stupid.

  7. Gecko:

I love how she repeatedly referred to her as ‘Sam Maiden’, ‘Sam Maiden’, not humanising her in any way.

I so am using that tactic on a workplace bully who for whatever reason has targetted me and one of my staff.

  8. Q: “The rot set in when churches protected them to protect their own image.” And when do you reckon that started, Q? 1950, 1900, 1800, 1500, 1200, 800, 350AD?

  9. Question
That one is not on Casefile. I wonder where I saw/heard it?

  10. Question
No, it is not true that most paedophilies were abused as children. The stuff that gets posted on here as fact in this area really is very uninformed.
I posted a way ago that I worked in this territory, did research and published. Child sexual abuse is multifactorial: it ranges from mild to severe psychopathology in the individual perpetrator and can include mild to severe associated physical and emotional abuse. It always has contextual dimensions of associated pathology.
Please. Don’t do a Wayne about this.

  11. Wayne
If you think the Liberals are for jobs and growth you are an idiot. The worst and most corrupt economic managers in Australian history. All started by the lying rodent who squandered the mining boom on getting his useless arse reelected.

  12. And abused people do not automatically become abusers, far from it.

Posting stuff like that makes it harder for victims to disclose in case people think they are damaged and will go the way of their attackers.

  13. Wayne
I suggest you go outside and retrace your steps for today, you might find the brain that slipped out of your arske. I know you did not notice because your brain stem kept everything physically functioning, but somewhere out there is a brand spanking new brain, little used, wondering how to call the cops and report itself lost.

  14. Just sent a small donation to ALP Bennelong campaign. Least I can do after reading about how fellow bludgers going to be volunteering at polling booths. Let’s hope the result is an upset ALP victory. We wasted enough time under Abbott/Turnbull governments.

  15. Puffy
Conservatives don’t have a prefrontal cortex, just a primordial brain stem. That’s why they worship coal; they remember when it was laid down.

I think that was one of the case studies in the RC. 🙁

  17. Question:

What shits me about the child sex abuse that occurred within religious institutions is the lengths those institutions went to to cover it all up. Even to the extent of moving offenders onto other communities where they re-offended.

And even to the extent that police and other authorities were complicit. This is an absolute blood boiler for me.

  18. “The rot set in when churches protected them to protect their own image.”

Like any big corporation caught up in a scandal. Think asbestos. Think tobacco. Think coal…

  19. Men who were victims of child abuse are a bit more likely to be abusers but women aren’t. Poverty, drug abuse, unemployment and marital discord are much more likely predictors but child abuse still happens in wealthy stable families for no apparent reason.

  20. Steve
Political parties, hospitals, banks, schools, government departments etc etc. Large corporations often meet the DSM criteria for psychopathic personality disorders.

And the very worst thing about that was the fact that these predators were then enabled to find new victims and destroy more lives. It was not just that these predators were not brought to justice but, in fact, were enabled and virtually authorised to re-offend. It is as though the leaders of these institutions personally sexually assaulted and raped these children but did not get their hands dirty.

  22. A report by Victoria’s Auditor-General has laid bare the misleading spin of Labor’s promise to remove Melbourne’s 50 “most dangerous and congested” level crossings.
The list was never any such thing: just a grab bag of crossings, some dangerous and congested, others relatively trouble-free, stitched together and sold to the electorate for the unrealistically low cost of $5-$6 billion.
That initial guesstimate has since jumped to $8.3 billion, less than halfway into the eight-year program, and the Auditor-General has warned taxpayers to brace for more likely increases.

    – There goes the $9.7 billion we got from the sale of the Port of Melbourne Lease.

  23. People of bennelong please return JA back to Canberra as we need to carry on with jobs and growth which this country needs and not ALP wasting our taxpayers money on corrupt unions we need to get the company taxes cuts though so businesses can create more jobs and keep our economy going so people of bennelong please return JA

  24. Gorks

The truth hurts doesn’t to hear me begging the people of Bennelong to return JA to Canberra so we can carry on with jobs and growth which the LNP ate delivering for this great country of ours……

  25. I will be out helping JA on Saturday getting people to vote for this great man who is getting things done for Bennelong and Australia as a hole….
