Galaxy: 50-50 in Queensland (federal)

More evidence of a solid swing to Labor in the electorally sensitive state of Queensland, and a decline in One Nation support from its peak earlier in the year.

The Courier-Mail today has federal results from the Queensland poll by Galaxy, for which state results were published on Saturday. It has Labor and the Coalition tied on two-party preferred, which represents a 4.1% swing to Labor compared with last year’s election, and a one point shift to Labor since the previous such poll in February. On the primary vote, the Coalition is at 35% (steady since February, down from 43.2% at the election); Labor at 33% (up four since February, and up from 30.9% at the election); and One Nation at 15% (down three since the last poll; comparisons with the federal election are not meaningful as did not run in a majority of the seats). The poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday from a sample of 850.

I’m struggling to believe anyone buying 15 sets of headphones to give to friends when they get back to Australia from Colombia.

    I share in your struggle.

That’s the first thing I thought of too. What the hell was she going to do with fifteen sets of headphones?

“The first order of water from Victoria’s desalination plant has come just in time for the company that owns the plant by enabling it to refinance a looming debt obligation.
Aquasure had $830 million of debt set to mature in October 2016; a sum that dwarfed the $1.68 million profit the company posted for the 2015 financial year.”
Meanwhile Victoria has just had its wettest April since 2001.

Perth had zero rainfall in April, it’s lucky we’ve got 3 desalination plants supplying 50% of our rainwater.

Apart from which, and as someone pointed out earlier, is Colombia the place to go for consumer electronics products?

  8. Barnaby is on Qanda tonight, balanced by Plibersek.

I predict much shouty shouty from Barnaby and Jones talking all over the top of Plibersek.

  9. The more I read about Theresa May, the more I come to the conclusion that she has out-fuckwitted Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull. Only the Donald is ahead of her now, but she is closing fast.

  10. Barnyard will have a few under the belt by now, extreme beetroot + incoherent.

Plibers has SOOOO much ammo given the LNP ramping up the war on the young with the threat of higher uni fees. They hate young people, unless they’re young libs.

  13. guytaur:

Rarely do the non politician Qanda panelists offer much to the conversation. The ABC is so anxious about showing itself to be balanced that there have been some episodes where we hardly hear from these panelists at all.

  14. Dio

Only today I found myself wondering why you hadn’t posted recently.

Sorry it wasn’t a nicer reason.

  15. Mikeh:

Since leaving the Qld Senate spot Barnaby’s coherence has improved immeasurably. Proving my theory correct that he was faking ignorant hick to appeal to his former constituency. In New England and in the lower house he can’t get away with that and so his speech has improved to the point he no longer sounds like the male equivalent of Pauline Hanson.

  16. guytaur:

True. But Jones has this awful habit of constantly interrupting and talking over the top of, in particular female panelists on his show. It’s one of the reasons I can barely watch the program these days.

  17. Indicative of the totally unreliability of news outlets to get it somewhere near correct came the item from Channel 9 TV 6 pm news that El Buen Pastor gaol in Bogota holds “50,000 prisoners”. This would be, at a guess, a city the size of Newcastle!
Just a brief look on line shows there are four gaols in Bogota – La Modelo, El Buen Pastor, Las Distrial and La Picola – with a TOTAL population, from the Human Rights article I read, of 11,000 prisoners. One article goes on to say that at El Buen Pastor there are 9 buildings holding between 100 and 250 persons which, in total, comes to somewhere between 900 and 2,250 persons.
While I am sure these places would not be very pretty, the total crap/inaccuracy that the likes of Channel 9 come up explains why commercial “news” is not worth a tinkers cuss these days.

The Panelbase survey, commissioned by The Sunday Times Scotland, shows 33 per cent backing (the Conservative) Ruth Davidson’s party in General Election voting intentions, up from the 2015 result, when they took almost 15 per cent of the vote, and up from 28 per cent in a Panelbase poll conducted in March.

The new poll also shows the SNP on 44 per cent, down from 47 per cent in last month’s poll and from almost 50 per cent in the 2015 election. The SNP won 56 out of 59 Scottish seats in 2015 and is still on course to take home a majority in June.

Support for Labour has dropped to 13 per cent from 14 per cent last month and just over 24 per cent in 2015. With only one MP, Ian Murray, the party faces a battle to maintain a Scottish presence at Westminster.

Among the other parties, the Lib Dems are backed by 5 per cent of voters, up one percentage point from March, while Ukip and the Greens are supported by 2 per cent of voters each, both down from 3per cent.

It appears the rise of the SNP is about to be followed in Scotland by the revival of the Tories….

    More polls from the UK….

A Polling Matters/Opinium survey finds that, whatever Brexit means, 38% of voters say “who will negotiate the best Brexit deal as Britain leaves the EU” is the most important factor influencing the x on their ballot paper. A plump 51% of those polled named Theresa May as the more trusted negotiator, with just 13% opting for Jeremy Corbyn; even among remain voters, she retained a 40% versus 20% advantage. Only 7% of leave voters preferred the Labour leader.

A whip-through the Sunday voting intention polls also has May 1st on 1st May (we’ve a whole month of May/May puns ahead of us. Buckle up). This week’s Opinium/Observer poll gives the PM a 17-point lead, with the incumbents on 47% (+2 on the previous week), against Labour’s 30% (+4), with the Lib Dems on 8% (-2) and Ukip on 7% (-2). ICM for the Sun on Sunday has the Conservatives on 47%, Labour on 28% and Lib Dems on 9%. YouGov for the Sunday Times offers a more slender lead, with the Tories on 44% and Labour on 31%; the Lib Dems perk up to 11% here.

The FT’s helpful poll synthesis gives us 46% for the Conservatives, an 18-point lead over Labour on 28%.

  24. Fess.

Ok the last special edition was boring as bat… Normally though they are way better than the regular shout fest.

  25. Dio, as Boerwar alluded to earlier with his post on the origin of the name Cassandra, her wedding guests should beware the Greek bearing gifts.

  26. Good evening all,

Would anyone be able to tell me if the lower income threshold for repayment of Uni debt is applicable to students who have already graduated or those who graduate after a certain date in the future ?

If it is retrospective then it will have a substantial flow through effect on a large number of lower income graduates who in many many cases would have other commitments that would leave them little room for extra outlay.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Cheers.

  27. Poroti, thanks for the link. I believe the passenger beside my relative was a Samoan. It makes sense, light weighted people such as Mrs Bemused could pay less for her flight (or use the savings to do shopping and carry more home – sorry Bemused).

  28. A question that came to mind was ‘dis she plan to consume the headphones at the wedding or were they to be sold to pay for the wedding?’
