Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

The latest result from Newspoll lands slightly at the upper end of the government’s recent form.

Courtesy of The Australian, the latest result from Newspoll records Labor with a two-party lead of 52-48, down from 53-47 in the last poll (which was three weeks ago rather than the usual two, owing to Easter). Labor and the Greens are both down a point on the primary vote, to 35% and 9%, with the Coalition and One Nation steady on 36% and 10%. Malcolm Turnbull is up two on approval to 32% and down two on disapproval to 57%, while Bill Shorten is up one to 33% and down one to 53%. Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister shifts from 41-32 to 42-33.

  1. Yes. There’s a few of them infiltrating our politics. “Profit is good”

Being rich means Jesus must love you. What sort of twisted shit is that. As I’ve said before, it’s the same sick thinking as ‘if Jesus wanted refugees to be here, then they wouldn’t have been born over there”.

Yes Jenauthor, I meant Hillsong style Pentecostal.

    Good Morning Bludgers
Richo, probably for reward, spivs for that great self-promoter, John Coates
Shellbell, I heard a fascinating history of the Battle for control of the AOC between Fiona De Jong and John Coates and how it is a proxy war between the Liberal Party and the Labor Right.
John Coates is the Labor Right proxy who is trying to engineer a handover to Mark Arbib after one more term. So, of course Graham Richardson is in his corner. Has been for decades. Coates appointed Richo to be Mayor of the Sydney Olympic Village in 2000.
Fiona De Jong is being backed by the Liberals. Their attack on Coates has been long in the planning. They cast around for a suitable candidate, employed a PR firm to guide the bid and strategically planned every step of the way on the road to their overthrow of Coates.
Coates has become too wedded to the AOC and it has become a dysfunctional marriage. However, on the other hand I really do not want to see the Liberals claim the position of Head of the AOC as theirs.

Your emoticons are a bad habit.
Arbib to succeed Coates? Are they insane?
What we need now is a good third candidate to come up through the middle and defeat Coates and the Lib stooge.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. Like I care if you think me and the majority of the world on social media using emoticons is a bad habit. I think it is you who needs to get used to the fact that they are used to convey across social media portals what would normally be seen with the eyes and picked up with the ears in a conversation.

OK, can’t do a photo, but the brains trust might work —

I came across a very very white fungi (it was visible for over 200 metres) which looks like a golf ball (complete with warts) on a very thin stem. It’s reasonably large – almost tennis ball size, and the stem is about 10 cm.

Never seen anything like it before, think it might be an amanita… any ideas?

I am not a botanist, and so this is just a quick result of a search, because your description piqued my interest.

There are two possibilities: Cyttaria gunnii http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=114
This fungus is edible apparently, but the colour is wrong, and it is only found (apparently) in Tassie and southern Victoria.

Another possibility is Ileodictyon gracile http://australianfungi.blogspot.com.au/2009/06/32-ileodictyon-gracile.html
This one seems to vary a lot in appearance depen ding on the maturity, so it seems more likely.
hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can identify it.

  14. Douglas and Milko

Thanks for that, but neither matches.

The fungus is growing in the middle of a paddock, metres away from the nearest tree. It looks exactly like a golf ball resting on a tee, but at least three times the size.

It’s raining heavily atm so I haven’t checked on it today – it is possible that as it matures its appearance will change and I’ll be able to better identify it.

No, but I recently saw what is definitely an Ood head displayed in the window of a Box Hill restaurant. We have apparently not only made contact with aliens but have started eating them.

Former Olympic hockeyroo Danni Roche is up against Coates.

    Fair enough.

  20. Good morning all,

I am a bit late into the discussion of the Peter Martin article but the consensus of the ” expert economists ” re the gas reservation policy is not surprising.

To many economists economics is a science and must be embraced in all its purity. It is irrelevant to them what the real world implications of their sacred theories would be and social impact is not a consideration.

Theoritical economists are in danger of becoming irrelevant and unless they embrace a real world perspective and a ” social impact test ” as part of their analysis they will continue to lose credibility. According to Peter Martin ( he does have form ) and others of his ilk the great unwashed general public should just accept that economists know best and pain is good, the theory is always right.

Greg Combet spoke often of real world economics, Greg Jerico is also a real world economist and the proponents of such outdated and purity focused economic policies as trickle down economics is good , protectionism is bad, government support for industry is bad ( car manufacturing eg. ), welfare bad etc etc need to be called out each and every time they sprout their rubbish and as long as they continue to refuse to consider the ” social impact ” of their theories.

Economic theory and real world ” social impact ” cost benefit analysis must go hand in hand.

Economics is not a science and blind adherence to its theoritical pillars without any consideration to its real world effects is useless. Instead of looking down with disdain at those who refuse to embrace their mantra theoritical economists and commentators need to accept that for every action or policy implementation there is a real world flow on that affects real people and that people are not numbers and statistics.

Cheers and a great day to all on this day of thanks, remembrance and recognition to all the young men and women who have served their country.

The Macrons make for an unlikely couple. They met when he was 15, she was 39 and she was his teacher! They hid their relationship for years, only really coming out publicly in 2008. What a story.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/04/24/after-years-of-hiding-their-relationship-brigitte-and-emmanuel-macron-enter-the-political-stage-together/?tid=sm_fb&utm_term=.c423ff93a1b9

Hopefully such stories won’t be given any oxygen in France. One candidate is a fascist, and the other has sex with a consenting adult. One of those things is a big problem that’s relevant to an election, the other completely not.

Watching Trump forget people’s names like Paul Ryan, I’m wondering if he has the beginnings of dementia. It would explain a lot.

6 Times Donald Trump Goofed Up the Simple Stuff

He gets the little things wrong as well as the big things

    1. When Melania had to remind him to put his hand on his heart for the national anthem.
    2. When he forgot which country he was bombing.
    3. When he forgot Paul Ryan’s name. Twice.
    4. When he confused Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un.
    5. All the times he’s asked crowds whether they were aware of widely known facts.
    6. When he quoted an Irish proverb that was actually Nigerian.

I know puffballs and occasionally eat them. I haven’t seen one with a stem, let alone a long stem, before.

Although psychiatrists have suggested that Trump is delusional, they haven’t suggested dementia – yet. But it’s possible that his problem with names stems from
    1. exhaustion – keeping up with all his own fabrications (aka lies)
    2. he’s not a quick reader, therefore can’t always be offered prompts from his minders
    3. Nobody is as important as himself, so he can’t be bothered

  25. AR:

I don’t think French voters care about things like that. Previous presidents have divorced and remarried while in office, without any impact with voters. It’d be a different story in the US or even here, but the French seem to take such things in stride.

The reactionary RC church in France and the Le Pen folk have much in common. They are the inheritors of Vichy and WWII Hitlerite collaborators. They inherit the French tradition of violent colonial suppression. They are Jew AND Arab haters – viciously and virulently so.
Which is probably why Melanchon, like Sanders – Trump, Di Natale- Turnbull and Corbyn- May, just loves aiding and abetting these types of people.
It is high time the far Left starts being held accountable for their historic role in helping people like Trump, Turnbull and May get up, and for their current attempts to get Le Pen up.
The best you could say for them is that they are deluded about the very real damage they are doing.
The worst you could say for them is that they would prefer ultra Right bastards to get up in the vain hope that it will boost the support of the far Left. In other words, the damage is deliberate.

Mélenchon has a choice to make – whether to affiliate with the Republic, with pluralism, with an open and modern France – or whether to affiliate with chauvinism, repression and closure.

He has tacitly chosen the latter. In doing so, his has discredited himself and brought dishonour to many of those who have supported him. This can only lead to the dissipation of Left support. After all, if you believe in a Chauvinist France better to support the pedigreed fascist than their half-baked accessories.

  27. Lizzie:

I haven’t seen any suggestions of dementia either, but Trump does have a habit of forgetting things, as PhoenixRed points out.

    4. Lack of sleep.

It was widely reported during the election that Trump often only gets 4 hours of sleep or less. Chronic insomnia can cause a lot of the same symptoms in terms of forgetfulness, being easily confused, and so on.
