Newspoll: 51-49 to Labor in Victoria

As the laying of charges against Liberal-turned-independent MP Geoff Shaw makes the Napthine government’s hold on power look a little shakier, Newspoll finds Victorian Labor moving into the lead.

Newspoll brings us a well-timed result of Victorian state voting intention, this being the usual bi-monthly result for July-August with a sample of 1144 respondents. It has Labor moving into the lead with 51-49 on two-party preferred, reversing the result of the last poll, from primary votes of 41% for the Coalition (down two), 38% for Labor (up three) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Personal ratings find Denis Napthine losing some honeymoon gloss, up five on disapproval to 31% and steady on approval at 53%. Daniel Andrews meanwhile is up three on approval to 38% and down two on disapproval to 32%, although Napthine’s lead as preferred premier is essentially unchanged at 47-25, compared with 49-26 last time. Here’s how the full gamut of this term’s polling – 12 Newspolls and five ReachTELs – looks after being run through the BludgerTrack meat-grinder:

  1. Centre

OK! Finally we know that he could have gone to a DD.

as to the other nonsense about having the support of half the coalition and the Greens, that again makes no sense.

If they all supported it, he wouldn’t have needed to go to a DD…

God, this is boring – can you please THINK before you post.

  2. “Rudd could have gone to the electorate with the knowledge and ammunition that the CPRS was supported by half the Coalition and the Greens.”

Rudd was too gutless to follow through and wimped.

Don’t ever forget that Rudd dined with, and was entertained by Murdoch. Gillard didn’t.

  3. Centre

“I’m happy to debate your lunacy – just don’t verbal me.”

WHOA! Hang on there… When did I verbal you? I have quoted EXACTLY what you said.

  4. “Is it a full moon or something?
All the deranged Rudd haters are out howling again.”

    Yes, and you’re here.

It’s too easy. Bait the hook with even a whiff of Rudd and they all bite. At least flathead are good on the BBQ ….

  5. Abbott had a 4 year dream run as the ALP bit off its nose to spite its face.

Looks like he is going to get another 4 years headstart as the ALP factions (now just the Gillardistas v. Ruddistas) fight to the death!

  6. Oh I see Centre… You’re claiming my ‘squirrel’ comment was me verballing you!

Ha! oh god, I suppose literally it is true, but your comment was just an attempt to distract from your original claim so it is not really verballing, more showing you that your claim was not relevant to what we were discussing

  7. Can we just have an open-ended Kevin Rudd thread so everyone who still thinks their nauseatingly over-repeated opinions on him matter can bitch and moan away into the void?

  8. “Abbott had a 4 year dream run as the ALP bit off its nose to spite its face.”

Yes, Rudd had a year or so then imploded.

    Abbott should be so lucky.

  9. mutley,

Catching a bemused fish is like catching the biggest carp in the universe.

To cook all you have to do is bake on top of a brick until the brick crumbles. You then throw away the bemused carp and eat the brick.

  10. So ModLib are you happy being with the anti-science crowd now?

It’s always been the winning team throughout history hasn’t it… All those societies that decided science wasn’t very good…

  11. [Looks like he is going to get another 4 years headstart as the ALP factions (now just the Gillardistas v. Ruddistas) fight to the death!]

He will leave parliament soon with any luck. Then at last, Labor will have some peace.

Where have I stayed silent on whether and on what basis Rudd could have gone to a DD.

Further withdraw your posts at 1997 and 2002 or get nicked!

  13. I agree Rudd should have gone to a DD. But wasnt it Gillard’s advice to dump the CPRS?

Thats right, it was. And so, our pointless cycle continues…

Oh look, over there, its an Abbott government.

  14. That’s not verballing Centre.

Look if half the coalition and the Greens supported the CPRS Rudd certainly wouldn’t have needed a DD. He could have passed the legislation.

I can’t withdraw it, because it’s simply true.

Anyway it’s obvious you are just angry or confused or something. So I will stop now.

  15. Someone said Abbott will have a honeymoon period.

I am not so sure. The blunders that are making a mark with voters are striking.

Its so bad even News Corpse is finding it hard to cover up.

Its not just one thing its the build up of stink.

When the polls come out I expect a fair amount of slippage in the Abbott Government popularity.

  16. Yeah GG and I suppose they benefitted somewhat at the time… They were superceded by the Enlightenment though (Science wins again!), so the culture/ethics etc of the Inquisition lost in the end.

You think Abbott will end civilisation as we know it?

  18. As I see it;
    – If Howard had won the 2007 election, he probably would have introduced an ETS.
    – If Abbott hadn’t won the 2009 spill by a vote, Rudd’s ETS would have passed.
    – If the Greens had supported Rudd’s ETS despite Abbott, it would have passed.
    – If Rudd had gone to a DD, the ETS probably would have passed.
    – If Rudd hadn’t been kicked out in June 2010, he probably would have won the 2010 election, therefore no more Abbott.
    – If Gillard’s 2010 campaign hadn’t been sabotaged, she could have won the 2010 election with a majority, therefore no more Abbott.
    – If Labor had been united during the minority Govt years, they could have won the 2013 election, solidifying the ETS, and no more Abbott.

Yet somehow a perfect storm of events has led an Abbott majority government, almost certain to undo all positive steps toward climate change action this country has taken since 2007. Unbelievable.
What bothers me most is that people like Jones, Bolt etc probably now think that Australia agrees with them on the issue of climate change.

But no point dwelling on past events and hypotheticals. I will try and get more proactive in defending the idea of carbon pricing and renewable energy etc.

  19. Astrobleme

You have said that if Rudd wasn’t scared he should have called a DD on the CPRS.

I’m saying to you that it would have been a politically risky proposition to do so without the support of the Greens on climate change.

A DD election on the CPRS fought between Labor + half of the Coalition which backed Turnbull (as political ammunition)+ the Greens v Abbott and his sceptics would have placed Rudd in a strong position – not in a position of risk!

You are a BORE I’m moving on.

The Greens now get what they deserve!

Yes, Narcissists tend to fade into the shadows and hide from media attention…..its unlikely he will continue to provide his advice to the ALP for years to come.

    Chin up! 🙂

  21. I think popcorn time and 3d glasses time is almost here.

Abbott now has to deal with the reality of government….. Difficult for competent leaders but impossible for ignorant pugs.

    Now on his plate are:

    1) Barnett wanting GST on the table

    2) Indonesia calling the stop-the-boats policy to book.

    3) ACT government putting SSM on the Feds agenda

    4) More and ongoing pressure regarding his views and management of women’s issues

    5) Uncertainty about the Senate and his carbon tax repeal

    6) Continuing pressure, media coverage, petitions and comments by Abbott voters about the NBN

    7) Minister McFarlane now being equivocal about the threat of withdrawl of support for the car industry

Even as I write, Barnett is again urging GST action, on Latelne.

The big question though is if and when the MSM will start searching for the transparency n accountability the Monkey has declared he will practise.

  22. Mod Lib

“You think Abbott will end civilisation as we know it?”

    Of course not.
Just that he will be remembered poorly and that his ideology/legacy will lose to rationalism and science. Like the Spanish Inquisition.

  23. guytar 2026

Well based on your election predictions a mere 48 hrs before polling, I’m sure TA is terrinly concerned about your prediction.

Meanwhile, mequire bob is probably predicting 60-40 to Labor.

“You think Abbott will end civilisation as we know it?”

    Of course not.
Just that he will be remembered poorly]

Y’all have underestimated him for years, you have claimed he was about to implode for years, you are now claiming he will be a failed Prime Minister and will be out in a few years.

    I see a pattern here, I don’t see any learning….

  25. “@Richard_Hemming: “@AshGhebranious: WA in 18bn of debt. Entire federal govt spend was 30bn in debt #lateline #auspol” future debt will be much greater”

  26. [WOW, Barnett has just lit the GST fuse again on Lateline!]

Of course he has. The ultimate deflection for Barnett from this horror period for his govt is a fight with Canberra.

  27. “@Richard_Hemming: Colin Barnett is the reddest man in Australia because WA’s finances are a joke in the midst of a massive mining boom #lateline”

  28. Centre

“You have said that if Rudd wasn’t scared he should have called a DD on the CPRS.

I’m saying to you that it would have been a politically risky proposition to do so without the support of the Greens on climate change.”

this is different to what you originally said, which was that he needed their support.

And of course it would have been risky. He had two choices, water it down to get Liberal support or go to a DD. So he watered it down to get Liberal support and then THEY did an about-face and stopped it. he then had ANOTHER opportunity to go for a DD and instead just did nothing and carried on with a sad look. So he had two opportunities for a DD and wimped on both.

The Greens were never involved. They complained a lot, because they weren’t involved.
