Newspoll: 52-48 to Coalition

A slightly improving trend to Labor in federal polling over the past week is maintained by a surprisingly strong result from Newspoll.

Newspoll echoes Essential Research in finding Labor recovering from its recent lows, its primary vote up three points on a fortnight ago to 34% and the Coalition’s two-party lead narrowing from 55-45 to 52-48. The Coalition is down three points on the primary vote to 44%, and the Greens are steady on 11%. Julia Gillard has recovered the lead on preferred prime minister lead she lost in the previous poll, now leading 42% (up six) to 38% (down two).

UPDATE: Julia Gillard approval 32% (up two), disapproval 57% (down one). Tony Abbott approval 36% (up three), disapproval 55% (steady). Preferred Labor leader: Kevin Rudd 44%, Julia Gillard 25%, Bill Shorten 16%. Voting intention with Kevin Rudd as leader: Labor 47%, Coalition 39%.

UPDATE (12/3/13): The second Morgan poll using its new “multi-mode” methodology covering both face-to-face and online surveying, claiming a huge overall sample of 4627, has Labor on 31.5% (down 1.5%), the Coalition on 47% (up 2%) and the Greens 11% (up 0.5%). Labor trails 57.5-42.5 on respondent-allocated preferences (out from 54.5-45.5) and 55.5-44.5 on previous election (out from 54-46). This marks a re-emergence of the curious disparity between these figures in Morgan, familiar from when their methodology was purely face-to-face, but which appeared to be absent in last week’s result.

So numptyville Bob predicted the CLP meltdown, only didnt?

Fabulous. Get this bloke into Kevin Rudd’s office. Pronto.

  2. Mr Abbott has made a couple of mistakes.

He released a new “policy” on indigenous issues. He actually was distancing himself from JWH with it.

The mistakes? Timing. While media law reform is going on no other policy will cut through. Plus by doing his usual motherhood style statement and not releasing detail he is making it hard for indigenous people to trust him.

  3. Reliable sources have informed me Warnie will be parachuted into a safe Labor seat and will be Leader. And Warwick Capper will be Treasurer.

[The leadership of Federal Labor keeps coming up for two reasons. The hung Parliament has meant one resignation away from change of Government and media speculation because of this and wishing to portray an unstable government.]

And time is running out for a by-election. By May they will have to look elsewhere for destabilisement-spiel.

  5. [So numptyville Bob predicted the CLP meltdown]

Yes, and that Giles would succeed as the next Chief Minister.

[Crikey‘s skinny on the outcome is as follows. Giles, member for Braitling and long the coming man of choice in the embarrassment-of-poverty that is the CLP’s political gene pool, will be chief minister by smoko time. If not, then he’ll be in the big chair within weeks.]

    Any other questions?

Id remind that you were the one who made so much of this point, Confessions.

Any yes, as far as I know William doesnt have a “No Greens” or “no ALP Rudd supporters” rule for the blog.

  6. [The way bludgers are going on tonight you would be forgiven for thinking they are the Canberra Press Gallery]

Someone said PB was as bad as the Press Gallery yesterday.

    It’s worse.

At least the concern trolls are outing themselves. That’s a positive.

but if the ALP lost after dumping Gillard for Rudd, the party would tear itself apart for years.

And if he wins, and is as unworkable as first time around, it may not pan out so well either.

It is rather strange how a large chunk of Caucus has always supported him. How can that possibly be if all these stories are true? Could it be they are just the BS spread by factional heavies and their acolytes in Caucus?

  8. my say,

I know exactly what that signifies.

I’m just saying that there is no need to “admonish” those with whom you (and I, mostly) disagree.

What they say is laughable and has been to be shown so in the last two-and-a-half years.

I just try to make fun of them.

  9. [ Apparently it is an open secret in the PM’s office and in the press gallery that JG is intent on being the first woman to be ordained a Jesuit priest. ]

Nah! I heard Julia and Kevin secretly wanted to marry, but were relying on Pell to be ordained Pope so that Kevvie could get an annullment.

They were due to elope this week, but something went wrong – Abbott found out about the plan and had the conclave roll Pell and install – of all things – a jesuit!. Can you believe it?

Now Pell and Abbott are no longer on speaking terms. Abbott has missed several confessions, and this is why he’s been such a bitch to Hockey lately.

But today Tim found out about the secret affair … I expect tomorrow to be really interesting …!

  10. Maybe Zoidlord. We’ll find out next week. Personally, I wont believe a thing I read till I see the doorstop.

Just noting that Confessions wrongly impugned his recent track record throughout the evening.

  11. Not a very gracious acknowledgement that you were comprehensively wrong Confressions.

Considering the way you bang on ceaselessly if you think you’ve spotted a tiny error in someone else’s assertions.

  12. I’m not sure whether you are of the Catholic faith or the Anglican. If the former, I congratulate you on the new Pope: he just may be blowing a new wind.

  13. Tricot@4791

The leadership thing is the elephant in the room because Rudd has made it that way.

Yes, he should have quit parliament and brought down the Govt or else committed seppuku.

  14. ALP.. obsessed with changing leadership. This story had legs last year because of Labor people. It has legs this year because of Labor people.

There are no ‘leadership stories’ with the coalition about Turnbull because the ranks are closed, their mouths are shut.

Labor people can’t wait to get into the frenzy with speculation about the ‘myriad’ of contenders that could reverse their fortunes.. the ONLY reason the ALP countenanced an outsider like Rudd in the first place.

This is because only those with no power in the ALP now speak openly about the vacuum inside of principle, ideal and connection with actual voters. Instead, the groupthink suggests all problems lie outside the party, until the next leader is offered, chewed up and spat out. If the machine is broken ALL the product will be bad.

The ALP is a busted political machine, maybe it deserves relegation.

“Can’t lead, Can’t budget, Can’t write policy (that isn’t more than a dumb thought bubble)”

You deserve this mess, guys, you made it.

  15. leftye:

Yet you’re the one who keeps going back to Bob.

We’ll see if he’s right. He was wrong about Mills and I reckon he’ll be wrong about Gillard, but time will tell.

[Any yes, as far as I know William doesnt have a “No Greens” or “no ALP Rudd supporters” rule for the blog.]

Are you implying that he should? If so I disagree with you, and reckon most Bludgers would also.

  16. It been a funny old week, I am now convinced labor will win and part of the plane was giveing news something over whcich they would make complete and utter fools off themselves.

I read my free sun in the morning and observe others, I don’t read the political pages cause they will be full of crap. I have noticed others start from the back and stop about 7 pages in.

I think people are completly fed up with the ranting and raving.

  17. Just got an email from my friend in the PM’s office.

Apparently after three phone calls to Pell in Rome tonight the date has now been set for JG to be bapitised a Catholic in St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, at 3.30 am on June 15th.

My friend believes that Janelle Saffon’s acceptance of and confirmation as Leader will be announced on Monday. Rudd is expected to be Deputy PM. He has long been a mentor to Saffon.

  18. [ALP.. obsessed with changing leadership. This story had legs last year because of Labor people. It has legs this year because of Labor people.

    ]

It has legs purely because of the polls. And it’s dead in the Libs for exactly the same reason.

  19. my say@4799

Bloody hell if there was. No media

And u lot talking about the above

    No one would be

    Get a. Hobby
And go way some where leave us real labor people in peace

    Talk about monopilise

    Take over, whatever

my say, I will say it yet again for your benefit.

As you have been reminded countless times, this is not an ALP blog. William welcomes diversity of opinion and full credit to him.

  20. I heard Turnbull has given up on waiting for Abbott to do the right thing, he is joining labor and challenging the PM to net connections at 50 paces.

  21. PlayerOne

So your predictions last week were just diversions. Good thinking. Great strategy.

JG deserves much privacy as she makes these life changing decisions about her future role in the Catholic church.

  22. Noone is offering odds on Turnbull becoming the next pm and labor staying in power. This is proof the rumour is true. The bookies arn’t offering odds because they are in the know.

  23. Goodnight

A good week for Labor. Loved the trap the LNP set for the MSM with their leadership tweets.

Exposed the Gallery for the headless chooks they are. I think that exposure has even been noticed out there in non political and therefore apathetic suburbia.

  24. [Yet you’re the one who keeps going back to Bob.]

Actually, we’ve all talking about Bob tonight – not least you. I dont control the other posters here.

[Are you implying that he should? If so I disagree with you, and reckon most Bludgers would also.]

Why yes, I’d love some mindlessly contrary.

  25. Ducky I hate to admit this

    But u are right again

    Lollolololloleheheh_
It certainly is better than trying to reason with any one

Any more. Cds u can send me

  26. Bemused

    Don’t tell us.

You knew all along that Janelle Saffon as PM was what Rudd has been angling for all along diidn’t you.

    Cunning bugger! 🙂

  27. I thimk the papers should pay me to run “turnbull rising”, I can come up with a good yarn, need a proff reader though.

  28. My Say

    You are spot on.

A friend of mine does outsourced typing for JulieBishop’s office. last week she had to type a personal letter from JB to Brendan Nelson about him being parachuted into Oakeshott’s seat.

When this is done, sometime around the ides of July, there is planned to be a swift booting out Abbott and confirmation of BN as LOTO. They are to nominate ms Mirabellaas GG
