South Carolina Democratic primary thread

Australia Day festivities prevented me putting this thread up in a timely fashion, but better late than never. Barack Obama has polled 55 per cent of the vote in today’s Democratic primary in South Carolina, which has the country’s third highest proportion of African-Americans behind Mississippi and Louisiana. Hillary Clinton took second place with 27 per cent, ahead of John Edwards on 18 per cent.

  1. And Clinton’s brother Roger can be Jethro, who in real life was quite smart and his since become a successfull producer and now owner of a chain of Beverly Hillbillies Casinos

  2. Oh, poor Rudy! Got the big plane, and the bunting and nobody (virtually) came:

Mr. Giuliani, former New York mayor, pledged that he would participate in a Republican presidential debate in California on Wednesday regardless of where he finished in Tuesday’s voting here. Still, if Florida is not his last stand, it remains the place where he has all but staked his campaign. And as the hours before voting waned, that campaign had none of the feel of imminent victory. Though his organization chartered a Boeing 727 for a day of barnstorming on the eve of the primary, none of the rallies at airports in Sanford, Clearwater, Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale drew even 100 supporters.

…gotta say, though, if you listened to more than 15 seconds of Rudy you can hardly blame them for staying away.

  3. Oh christ, duck for cover! Pat Buchanan is scared of McCain’s finger on the button:

“That’s one of the things that makes me very nervous about him,” Buchanan went on. “There’s no doubt John McCain is going to be a war president. … His whole career is wrapped up in the military, national security. He’s in Putin’s face, he’s threatening the Iranians, we’re going to be in Iraq a hundred years.”

    Armagedon! Armagedon outa here! LOL

Is that the NY chapter of sisters? Ouch! A slapping of the old white guy.

Guess old white guys aren’t their usual favourite flavour.

  5. Climate change- This coming budget provides ample opportunities Dyno.
He could begin by phasing out the diesel fuel rebate to farmers and phasing out the fringe benefits provided to people who drive company cars and use the scheme to provide incentives for people to take public transport. Tax credits here are a good idea.
Provide government money for projects such as Geothermal development and Solar, plenty of room in our desert regions for projects to commence.
Stop the pulp mill in Tassie, do the same in regards to channel deepening project in Victoria as ships use an abundance of greenhouse gases. Use it rail instead.
Put in place significant funds to plant trees for carbon capture.
Embrace public transport by decreasing the massive funding for road projects which goes on unabated. Increase the import duties even more on bigger gas guzzlers and reducing it for electric vehicles, provide tax breaks only for these vehicles. Slowly pour funds into public transport projects so to encourage greater freight use instead of truck frieght which is clogging our roads, increasing maintenance, causing vehicle collisions, road trauma, pollution, respiratory and other health probs… WHAT A WASTE trucks on roads are.
What else i could go on..
Unfortunately Dyno their are so many vested interests in this web and none of it will be done.
Increase the import duties on electrical greenhouse items like plasma tvs.

  6. Well, I never expected to see that. David Brooks on PBS, with Jim Lehrer, giving his take on the Ted Kennedy endorsement, and it turns out he was actually there.

To see David Brooks, clearly give a little choke of emotion when he talked of seeing the patriach of the Democrats, the patriach of the Kennedy’s, and the living link with the days of American promise hand that torch to Obama, well, it was truly quite incredible.

Even Brooks, who usually looks like a surprised chipmunk, was obviously taken aback by his own feelings.

    Unforgetable.
