YouGov: Labor 29, One Nation 27, Coalition 19 (open thread)

One Nation now knocking on the door of the Labor primary vote in the latest YouGov poll, with the Coalition remaining adrift.

The fortnightly Sky News Pulse poll by YouGov finds One Nation only one point shy of the vote it recorded in the thick of the Liberals’ early February leadership crisis, recording 27% of the primary vote with Labor down one to 29%, the Coalition steady on 19% and the Greens steady on 13%. One Nation also records its best result yet on the two-party preferred measure against Labor, with the latter leading 53-47, in from 55-45 a fortnight ago. Labor’s lead over the Coalition narrows from 55-45 to 54-46. The poll was conducted from last Thursday through to yesterday from a sample size unspecified – I will hopefully be able to provide further detail later today.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor down one-and-a-half points to 27% with the Coalition up by the same amount to 25.5%. One Nation and the Greens were each up a point, to 23.5% and 13.5% respectively. Labor’s two-party lead over the Coalition narrows from 54-46 to 52.5-47.5 on respondent-allocated preferences, and from 52-48 to 51-49 on previous election preference flows. The poll was conducted Sunday to Monday from a sample of 1664.

  1. It seems as if Pauline has become “the voice” that many Australians have wanted all along.

“Queen Elizabeth I of England: A famous “redhead” who made red hair fashionable and reigned over a golden age.”

Perhaps “out Pauline”, another more contemporary “redhead”, will reign over Australia in a newer version of “the golden age”

    Barnaby as the Queen consort!

A photo of Pauline in every classroom!

What exactly is the current polling measuring?
    No one predicted all this.
    (Except Barnaby perhaps as Nostrabarnabus)
God save our gracious Queen as “she’s coming” to a polling station near you.

There’s something of Priscilla Queen of the Desert about Pauline.

  2. Opinion polling assuming all of the 19% Lib/nats combined primary vote preferences is going to one nation 2pp, and vice versa

Not going to happen on election day

whether its one nation or Lib /nats , on current one nation primary votes 2pp is likely 39/40%, on lib/nats combined primary vote 2pp likely around 35%

  3. Well it’s best that the ‘Queen of Common Sense’ gets to be the opposition just to see how that works out.
It occurred to me the other day, post -SA ELECTION, that if you have an ON member for your electorate , individuals or groups of voters could make the members job quite demanding if they turned their minds to it.

  4. I do wonder what the SA Liberal party thinking was when they decided to preference ON. That has mow meant ON got more seats than they should have.

    Was it:
    1. They felt keeping the seats on the conservative side of politics was the highest priority so that there would be a base to launch from in later elections?
    2. They wanted a career pathway, seeing the Liberal party as essentially dead. In the future planning to defect to ON?
    3. They miscalculated thinking ON wouldn’t get the seats and that ON would finish third meaning a preference swap would see the Liberal party snatching seats out from under Labor?

I genuinely dont know the answer. But realistically it was a poor choice for the Liberals.

  5. Essential Poll… no voting intentions

The latest Guardian Essential poll found Australians are keener for the government to forge closer ties with so-called “middle powers” such as Canada and Japan, with about a third wanting to distance from the US.

The poll of 1,008 Australians last week found 43% of respondents disapproved of the US and Israeli bombardment of Iran, while just 26% backed the move. Some 31% were unsure or responded “don’t know”.

Regarding Australia’s response to the military action, 34% approved and 25% disapproved, with 40% saying they were unsure or didn’t know. On Tuesday, the defence minister, Richard Marles, refused to rule out extending the deployment beyond the initial four weeks, saying Australia had received requests from the US to help defend the Gulf region.

Asked about specific responses to the Iran war, only 32% backed the federal government’s moves to send missiles, an E-7 Wedgetail surveillance aircraft and about 85 Australian defence force personnel to the United Arab Emirates. Some 35% opposed that move.

But while 37% would back sending naval support to end blockages of oil supplies through the strait of Hormuz, only 21% would support sending Australian troops to any ground operation.

Of those polled, 30% opposed sending naval support, and 50% opposed sending ground troops.

  7. Revolutionary Quisling @ 6.18am,
You make a good point. The hard work for the elected ON candidates in SA begins. I doubt that any of them will know how to run an Electorate Office and deal with their new constituents. They were elected on a vibe and grievance. Now they will have to try and deal positively to their constituents’ satisfaction with their grievances, which will be brought to their door. As Nick Xenophon found out, you can’t stunt and social media your way to solid success in politics. Eventually the wheels fall off. Bernardi and Joyce may have experience with actual governing, but that will grate with Queen Pauline. As anyone who has tried to offer her advice does. With her, my way or the highway mentality they usually end up in a ditch on the side of the road.

Anyway, with polling figures like the above it’s time for her to start fronting up to the press gaggles she studiously avoids. With figures like that she deserves the constant scrutiny they demand. And she better start turning up to parliament more than 50% of the time as well. Though I imagine she will dip out to campaign in Victoria next. And if she does skive off, some sort of marker should be put in her place in the Senate which photographers can take photos of to tell the electorate that she’s not actually serious about governing, just juicing the electorate. And, getting back to my original point, wouldn’t know how to govern if power fell into her lap.

When Peter Dutton believed aping Donald Trump was his path to victory, how did that turn out? Under the kleig lights of intense scrutiny his campaign fell apart and aping Trump wasn’t enough to save him. Under well-deserved intense scrutiny the same should happen to Hanson and her acolytes, backers and candidates. Between now and the next federal election we have the Farrer by-election and my advice to the Liberals is don’t be mugs and preference Pauline, she didn’t help you out in SA. Then we have the Victorian state election and ditto, don’t feed the political troll with your preferences. But IF her party wins any seats then their performance in the political cauldron needs to be very closely monitored. Any policy suggestion they make needs to be measured against reality and practicality and every slip-up magnified, just as is done with every other party which wants to govern. At the moment Pauline Hanson is on Sideshow Alley, and the Red-Haired lady, like the Bearded Lady, is attracting attention. But as Donald J.Trump, the politician that she is aping now, is finding out, moving to the big tent and trying to keep all the balls in the air, is a whole ‘nother thing.

The time for furtively avoiding the serious media and their scrutiny by hiding on Big Gina’s little Gulf Stream and running from smaller airports to waiting cars to heavily screened from scrutiny campaign rallies, is over, Pauline. Let’s see what you’re really made of.

  8. Also, guys, I’m just waiting for the electricians to turn up to put new ceiling fans in my house this morning, which means that my electricity will be turned off until they’ve finished the job. Which means no DP this morning. However, I’ll still be able to comment on my phone. 😉

  9. Scott’s approach of ignoring the Labor primary worked out the last election, will it work out again given how different the numbers look now?

Combined major party primary sub 50, Labor sub 30, the LNP sub 20. Well in some polls. Labor sub 30 in quite a few

Not surprisingly Trump’s talk of talks to end the war just look like bullshit to manipulate the markets, insider trading in action

Meanwhile the war gets worse, hopefully someone else can find a way to end it before it spreads even further.

Does raise the question if we should get out if UAE becomes an aggressor rather than acting defensively? Given I don’t think we should be there in the first place, it’s a definite yes from me

  10. One thing about the Trump orbit, the people in it will always find a way to make a buck, even if it’s illegal.

Over the weekend Donald Trump threatened dire vengeance on Iran unless its government opened the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, a deadline that would expire Monday evening in Washington. Specifically, he announced that the U.S. would begin bombing power plants — plants that supply electricity to Iran’s civilian population — unless the Strait was cleared.

But at 7:05 AM Monday Trump called the whole thing off — for five days, he said, but many people are assuming that the threatened action, which would have been a massive war crime, is now off the table.

The reason for the about-face, he claimed, was that the U.S. was engaged in productive negotiations with Iranian officials — although this seems to have come as news to the Iranians, who denied that any such negotiations are taking place. Sad to say, in this case, as I tried to explain yesterday, the fanatical, brutal Iranian regime is more credible than the president of the United States. Is he lying or living in a fantasy world? Neither possibility is comforting.

But in any case, Trump’s sudden climb-down was startling. Who could have seen this coming?

The answer is, the person or people who bought large quantities of stock market futures and sold large quantities of oil futures around 15 minutes before Trump’s announcement.

Wrong again. Labor + ON is plus 50.

The Greens need to understand that the urban progressives routinely piss all over the rural disadvantaged. The latter feel that. And they are over it.

  12. This is what I’m talking about:

Liberal party preferences handed seats to One Nation in South Australian election, analysts say

Pauline Hanson’s party will have at least two seats in the upper house and at least one and likely more in the lower house

“Seats that One Nation are going to win will be won on Liberal party preferences,” Adelaide University emeritus professor of politics Clem McIntyre said.

“In each case it’s going to be Labor or Liberal coming third and if the Liberals fall below Labor, they’ll get eliminated and the preferences will go to One Nation.

“They’ve now provided a means by which One Nation are going to have seats in the parliament and get the credibility and attention that a formal party in the House of Assembly will get.

“It’s going to mean One Nation wins seats they wouldn’t otherwise have won.”

Ben Raue, an electoral analyst said a couple of seats were likely to be won by One Nation thanks to Liberal preferences, and that if Labor’s primary vote had been five points lower, they could have won more.

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/mar/24/liberal-party-preferences-handed-seats-pauline-hanson-one-nation-sa-election-ntwnfb

Pauline Hanson is a political parasite. The Liberal Party and The Nationals need to take their medicine and eliminate her from the body politic.

  13. Having initially failed completely in the contingency planning the US is putting in place the pieces together to grab some land.

The first of two marine expeditionary forces will be arriving in the vicinity about now. The second will be arriving in about a week having had to sail from San Diego. The third force is a brigade of the Screaming Eagles. This can be in place and ready to roll within a week or so.

The problem for the marines is that they need to get to the vicinity of the SoH or through the SoH before they assault something or other. The Screaming Eagles can just jump from planes basically anywhere in Iran.

The contingency planning failure has cost the US a month’s worth of military options.

  14. Hanson is many things, most of which I don’t like at all.

She is also the channel for the feelings of a large number of rural and, increasingly, of outer urban disadvantaged people.

Badmouthing Pauline won’t fix that. It might actually make it worse.

HH – thank you for the international roundup.

THIS is what everyone needs Russian soldiers in Ukraine to be doing. Simply deserting or defecting would be okay as well. From the article:

… the individual was a 19-year-old conscript from Novosibirsk who had been drafted despite being enrolled in higher education.

He later signed a contract, reportedly expecting to undergo warrant officer training, but was instead deployed to a combat zone. Initially assigned to the 150th Motor Rifle Division in Novocherkassk, he was later transferred to the 102nd Regiment’s second battalion.

The soldier was assigned as a UAV operator without formal training and operated in the areas of Sofiivka and Volodymyrivka. During this period, he established contact with the Ukrainian “I Want to Live” project and was later directed to communicate with (Ukrainian soldier) Karpenko as part of an information-sharing initiative.

Over approximately 80 days, he transmitted coordinates of personnel, equipment, and movement routes of Russian units. The data was reportedly shared with a delay of 10 to 15 minutes, enabling Ukrainian forces to strike targets in near real time.

  16. There is another signal from Israel about hanging onto southern Lebanon.

Of those polled, 30% opposed sending naval support, and 50% opposed sending ground troops.

Asked whether Australia should prioritise its relationship with the US, or strengthening relationships with Canada, South Korea and Japan, only 35% backed America and 65% chose the “middle powers”.

Did you hear that Putin’s done a disappearing act recently?

Also, re that Russian soldier’s actions, I reckon there’s more than him who are getting sick of fighting Putin’s war and are behaving accordingly.

  19. Someone else who stands to make money from high oil prices.

Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been pushing President Trump to continue the war against Iran, arguing that the U.S.-Israeli military campaign presents a “historic opportunity” to remake the Middle East, according to people briefed by American officials on the conversations.

In a series of conversations over the last week, Prince Mohammed has conveyed to Mr. Trump that he must press toward the destruction of Iran’s hard-line government, the people familiar with the conversations said.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/24/us/politics/saudi-prince-iran-trump.html

  20. Israel’s Channel 12 reports that US negotiators are working on a one-month ceasefire with Iran, during which talks will be held over 15 items.

  21. It’s Gallipoli 2.0. A fever dream.

The problem for the marines is that they need to get to the vicinity of the SoH or through the SoH before they assault something or other. The Screaming Eagles can just jump from planes basically anywhere in Iran.

The contingency planning failure has cost the US a month’s worth of military options.

The Iranians have a million men and women under arms. While they are not all Marines or Screaming Eagles, and may not all be fawning disciples of the mullahs, their country is being attacked. For nearly 50 years they have been told that America is the Great Satan. That’s the kind of lifelong indoctrination that sticks.

The Great Satan has acknowledged they have no interest in human rights in Iran. It’s ally is the even more hated Israel, which has been knocking off the Iranian leadership, because it wants chaos and anarchy in Iran, not prosperity and civil order.

At some point enough has to be enough for ordinary Iranians.

5,000 Yank troops, no matter how elite, is insufficient to accomplish the mission. Probably 50,000 would be too few. It will be a massacre … of Americans. Hunker down.

  22. The ceasefire in Gaza has been a sham. Israel continues its campaign there. Will the Iran ceasefire be the same? One side or the other will want to take advantage.

  23. C@tmomma, Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 7:17 am:

    newy boy,
Did you hear that Putin’s done a disappearing act recently?

Also, re that Russian soldier’s actions, I reckon there’s more than him who are getting sick of fighting Putin’s war and are behaving accordingly.

C@tmomma, no, I did not! I’m going to dig around for more on that.

As for Ukraine’s ‘I Want To Live’ initiative pitched at Russian soldiers who want an option other than being ordered to a vain death by their own heartless and brainless commanders, here are some fun facts I just dug up on Google Gemini AI:

As of early 2026, the Ukrainian “I Want to Live” (Hochu Zhit) project has seen a significant increase in both inquiries and successful surrenders. According to data released by the project and Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War:

Key Statistics (as of March 2026)
    a) Total Surrenders: Over 10,000 Russian soldiers have successfully surrendered specifically through this project since its launch in September 2022.
    b) Total Inquiries: The program has processed more than 40,000 inquiries from Russian military personnel and their families inquiring about the surrender process.
    c) Current Rate: On average, between 60 and 90 Russian servicemen surrender via the hotline every week.
    d) Engagement: The project’s official website has recorded over 48 million visits, the majority of which originate from within the Russian Federation (often via VPN).

    Why they are surrendering:
According to interviews conducted with the POWs, roughly 24% cited coercion or deception during their recruitment as a primary reason for wanting to leave the Russian military. The project also offers a “pre-emptive” registration, allowing soldiers to sign up before they even reach the front lines; Ukraine then classifies these individuals as “captured in battle” to ensure they remain eligible for prisoner exchanges and state payments in Russia, protecting them from domestic desertion charges.

  24. BW @ 7.12

A good post…the Dems in the US tried ridicule until the MAGA ‘adopted’ the deplorable tag. It just entrenches the hate, anger and desire for revenge.
A previous boss used to say ‘allow the process to work’ whereby he’d listen first, ask a few pertinent questions that showed an interest in the complainant’s issues, then allow time and gentle discussion (once the heat had been taken out of the complainant’s emotions), and work towards a solution.
In the ON case I believe acknowledgement of their complaint is what they chiefly desire, then to be quietly shown the way towards how that will be resolved. Not easy, doesn’t make good ‘takes’ for the media but defuses the emotion so that the brain (even a ON brain) to see that a solution is possible but not necessarily a ‘one size fits all’ response that ignores the complexity of government.

  25. So called progressive left Labor has torched its vote by its own actions.
Own goals on population and its own spending and its refusal over years to change its failed policies means One nation is now taking its votes.
Weak leadership by Albanese with not booting overstayers etc, and the rent and housing crisis continues.

Well done Trump, Iran is weak and being smashed.
One nation is the proxy for Trump in Australia and its vote is through the roof.
He boots illegals etc puts his own people first.Does not listen.
Sweden that darling of labors progressive left is kicking out of its country, people who do not assimilate.Open borders fail labor!
    Just look at woke Victoria!

  26. Saudi Arabia is probably the best example to follow for post-war Iran. They have been relaxing restrictions on their women and it seems to have stopped the protests that were occurring before that. If, as America says, they are wanting a more moderate leader in Iran and Saudi Arabia is saying they want the ME remade, then that may be the template that is eventually followed.

Or you can just keep running around with your hair on fire simply believing Iranian propaganda. Or American propaganda. Take your pick. Or you can look through the fog of war to what will likely be the practical outcomes.

  27. This is a major reason why I oppose the US’s Iran military adventure lasting another moment longer – it takes Western military support away from those who really need it:

“Russia fires nearly 1,000 drones in one of its largest aerial attacks on Ukraine:
At least seven killed as Moscow appears to step up spring offensive amid concerns focus on Iran war leaves Kyiv more vulnerable”
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/24/russia-strikes-civilian-areas-ukraine

Russia has launched a huge wave of nearly 1,000 drones at Ukraine, killing at least seven people, as Moscow appears to be stepping up a spring offensive intended to break Ukrainian resistance along the front.

Ukrainian officials said Moscow fired nearly 400 long-range drones and 23 cruise missiles overnight, followed by another 556 drones in an unusual daytime assault on Tuesday, hitting cities across the west of the country.

Taken together, the barrage marks one of the largest aerial bombardments of Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion more than four years ago.

  35. This is the sort of thing we need to keep highlighting:

One Nation has opposed Labor’s cost of living relief and industrial relations reforms.

Don’t attack Pauline personally. Attack her policies. Highlight her hypocrisy. The ‘I’m for the little guy’ politician who travels around on the richest person in Australia’s private plane. The political party leader who is allergic to scrutiny.

  36. That’s survival of the fittest, right there, Omar. And your little one is fighting fit. She’s a survivor, and I bet the protein from eating the snake has really supercharged her for the next battle. She is also emblematic of the fight women have in them. 😉

  37. Yesterday, I speculated that there might be an announcement today about Tomago. Seems like I was wrong – it’s about the Boyne smelter.

The government has announced the commonwealth and Queensland governments will each chip in $1bn to Rio Tinto’s Boyne aluminium smelter in Central Queensland, to keep it viable into the future.

The government says the move, which will include Rio “underwriting significant investment in energy and transmission”, and will unlock almost $7.5bn in investment in Queensland. (GA Live)

The nature of the underwriting will be the interesting part.

  38. Another Trumpian fantasy that requires the obligatory thought of, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” and the purchasing of a 50 kilo grain of salt. No doubt if asked what the “present” is he’ll either go the attack for being questioned by a fake news journo or move onto the new gold leaf toilet paper for the hooge ballroom.

Wrong again. Labor + ON is plus 50.

The Greens need to understand that the urban progressives routinely piss all over the rural disadvantaged. The latter feel that. And they are over it.

    __________

Intriguing thought. If/when One Nation replaces the Coalition as the right-wing party with the greatest number of seats (consider your preferences carefully Libs/Nats), then logically the majors would be Labor and One Nation.

Hanson is many things, most of which I don’t like at all.

She is also the channel for the feelings of a large number of rural and, increasingly, of outer urban disadvantaged people.

Badmouthing Pauline won’t fix that. It might actually make it worse.

Hanson is many things, most of which are unclear with unclear outcomes.

Hanson worship is a cult for the disadvantaged in a rapidly changing rural environment.
The outer urban “fringe dwellers” are a mixed bag of aspirational voters in a rapidly changing environment.
You’re correct that “badmouthing” Pauline may actually increase Pauline’s popularity.
However the plethora of Pauline’s claims about the problems facing voters and the broad, shallow and nonsensical solutions Pauline regularly promotes need to be exposed for their irrationality and falsehoods.
Change is more often than not the driving force for dissatisfaction and the agricultural sector is feeling the full force of change.
I’ve watched a Bolt interview with Hanson this morning. It was incredibly soft and conveniently narrow to give Hanson a opportunity to promote her irrational policy free self.
My question to Hanson would be to name three policies that will improve “the lot” for people in the bush.
