Newspoll: 57-43 to Labor (open thread)

Such changes as the latest Newspoll records maintain a pattern of rising support for One Nation and weakening personal ratings for Sussan Ley.

“It is interesting that the Norway Nobel Prize committee gave the award to someone who wants to privatise Venezuela’s oil reserves”
I think her coup plotting and desire to murder citizens who voted against her party using CIA funded death squads is worse.

I think it is too, if true?. I just wanted to see what her political ideology was though. Which turns out is pretty extreme right wing and strongly aligned to upper class elites. She herself is the eldest of four daughters from a multi-millionaire family. I doubt she would be any better than the fairly extreme left Government they currently have and suspect if she got in would be just as undemocratic too.

On Greta, as long as she keeps to fashionable causes like Palestinians and wind farms she’ll have a long career as a liberal grifter. If she starts talking about socialism, class solidarity & the devastating impact religion has on the working class then the neolibs paying for her globe spanning jetset lifestyle will move on and she’ll vanish from public view like Malala Yousafzai.

I was preferring to not sail into this topic, but the premise that Greta is funded by “the neolibs” adds further proof that “neoliberal” is a made up and meaningless term, used only as a pejorative rather than representing any coherent economic framework or ideology.

    Or it’s an elaborate shitpost…

And what exactly as your beef with the “fairly extreme left Government” whose propaganda kool-aid you have just swallowed to the very last drop?
    —————————————————–

Their pretty much a dictatorship. Though I have serious doubt that María Corina Machado would be much better. Suspect she would be very similar to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as far as her political ideology is concerned.

Oh, I see you’ve just belatedly whacked an “if true?” in there. Brilliantly played.
    —————————————————————-

Sorry, i should have done it at the beginning. I was really only wanting to discuss her political ideology. Which from what I read is full on capitalism and deeply favouring the countries rich elite.

  5. Machado was mates with George Bush. She was ginning up a US intervention in 2005 after her organisation’s gigantic loss in the 2004 referendum against Chavez, a loss on par with the Yes vote loss in the Voice referendum.

Ever since that moment she’s being trying to destroy the country so it can be handed over to far-right capitalists so they can destroy the working class just like what’s happened in Bolivia and Argentina and so many nations the US thinks should hand over their mineral, agricultural and labour wealth for pennies.

Clearly the CIA have realised that Juan Guaido is a flop, and now they’re trying to spin a Thatcher “Iron Lady” Girlboss as their next would be leader in the same fashion as Jeanine Anez.

Nothing Machado done qualifies as “peaceful”. If Trump manages to make the 2 state solution stick he’ll deserve a Nobel Peace Price a million times more than she does.

Greta promotes greenwashed capitalism and “safe activism”. Same way companies were pro-LGBT in the west before Trump came along. Same as “Just Stop Oil”, she generates culture war outrage without doing anything to challenge the status quo, or to assist the working class to turn upward instead of against each other.

You need some reliable source backing for your statements.

  7. Her meeting with Bush (with pictures of course) and her Sumate coup plotting organisation (funded by the CIA through it’s money laundering branch the NED) is all listed in her wikipedia article.

“Suspect she would be very similar to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as far as her political ideology is concerned.”
I think she’d end up being more a far more violent, far more authoritarian version of Milei with similarly, sell everything to Yanks radical economic policy but egged on to crack down on opposition by the likes of Steven Miller.

I think it’s funny the reaction to her from “the left” (or for yanks, centre-right) because she’s not Trump, despite her politics being poisonous far-right authoritarian economic vandalism.

  8. Greta pops up from time to time on my Insta sushi train. She’s yet to talk about capitalism. She has messages of justice for those without weapons or power. She talks about the environment. She’s also an optimist. I respond well to that. I’m sure the algorithm is sending me voices and images it expects I will ‘like’. I get music from America in the 60s and 70s, and earlier too. I get a lot of art. I’m currently getting lots about resistance to Trump in Oregon, California, NY and Chicago. I see a lot of stand up comedy. I see frequent stories about Ukraine’s coming victory over the Russian Federation. The politics of Epstein features prominently. AOC is highly visible. I’m a convert.

It’s very US-centric. I get the feeling I’m seeing material that’s been thru the juicer and has been sieved many times.

  9. “The Maduro regime does not allow Machado to contest elections, which naturally makes her opposition party a “coup-plotting organisation”
She started her Sumate coup-plotting organisation after the right lost Presidential elections to Chavez (who won in 98 prior), in 2000, and went to the US to try and organise a US intervention after losing the 2004 recall referendum, and kept it going after 2006, 2012, 2013. None of these elections are considered illegitimate by anyone except the opposition.

In 2018 the right decided to attempt violent rebellion and treason, refusing to participate in Presidential elections. Following that they attempted to install Guaido as President. Machado is just one of many far-right nationalists in the Americas seeking to put her country in a civil war or to be invaded by the United States so she can gain power and riches for selling her citizens out to the Americans. Operation Gideon being one of the much publicised failures.

Then in 2024 they lost to Maduro again, and once again began starting to coup plot, hoping to gain favour with Trump. Who is now blowing up fishing boats for no reason, murdering civilians because it looks good on TV and plays well with his rascist power base.

None of which should qualify her, or any of the plotters or opposition for a Nobel “Peace” Prize. Which was my main point.

  10. Then in 2024 they lost to Maduro again

    Okay.

Presidential elections were held in Venezuela on 28 July 2024 to choose a president for a six-year term beginning on 10 January 2025.[2][3] The election was contentious, with international monitors calling it neither free nor fair,[4] citing the incumbent Maduro administration’s having controlled most institutions and repressed the political opposition before, during,[2][5] and after the election. Widely viewed as having won the election, former diplomat Edmundo González fled to asylum in Spain amid repression of dissent and a national and international political crisis that resulted when Venezuelan electoral authorities announced—without presenting any evidence, and despite extensive evidence to the contrary—that Nicolás Maduro had won.[6]

  11. Yes I agree that 2024 was a contentious election. I think that was inevitable as it included parties that had participated and lead the 2019 coup attempt.

  12. So the problem with the 2024 election was that not enough opposition candidates were barred from running, which left Maduro with no choice but to fabricate vote tallies and chase the candidate who no one doubts defeated him in a landslide out of the country.

  13. If you say so. There’s people in Australia who regularly complain about Albo being a communist who stole the election. Doesn’t make it true. Trump whines about his “stolen” second term and even that his 2nd win was “smaller” because of ‘election fraud’. Doesn’t make it true.

It’s also not relevant to a coup-plotter getting a Nobel Prize for “Peace”. What “peace” was being pursued while she went looking for a US invasion or massive sanctions against her country to help get her violently installed as the President?

  14. If you say so. There’s people in Australia who regularly complain about Albo being a communist who stole the election.

Yeah, I’m sure a map like this for the Australian election would look very similar.

And while I concede the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence, the relevant Wikipedia page is silent on the question of whether Peter Dutton had to seek asylum in a foreign country.
