As reported in The Australian, Newspoll has become the last poll series to return for the year, showing the Coalition opening up a 51-49 two-party lead after a 50-50 result in the last poll in early December. Labor is down two points on the primary vote to 31%, its equal worst result for the term, with the Coalition steady on 39%, the Greens up one to 12% and One Nation steady on 7%. Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings are his worst result to date at both ends, with approval down three to 37% and disapproval up three to 57%, while Peter Dutton is up one to 40% and steady on 51%. Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister narrows from 45-38 to 44-41, also Albanese’s weakest showing this term. The poll also finds 24% expect a Coalition majority government, 29% a Coalition minority, 33% a Labor minority and 15% a Labor majority. The poll was conducted Monday to Friday from a sample of 1259.
Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition (open thread)
The first Newspoll of the year maintains an impression of an ongoing slow downward trend for Labor.

I think it’s interesting how quickly Coalition goons have jumped onto the Grace Tame bandwagon, when just days ago she was the worst person in Australia. Needs must, I guess. 😐
See one or two here poo-pooing the fall in inflation as kind of “not real” as there are items them have gone up in the supermarkets – cheese and beans I think were the examples given.
My point is that you can’t have the figures both ways.
If some how (and it has nothing to do with Labor) interests rates are too high and Labor ‘should do something about this’ and use the cash rate to hit Labor over the head with it, then when inflation figures have come down it is total hypocrisy to say/infer these lower figures are somehow not ‘real’.
I do not believe the LNP propaganda that ALL Australians are now 10% worse off by the way.
True to say the housing market is not good for young couples and others starting out, but by way of interest I noted Perth airport has reported in the last twelve months significant passenger transit and a record profit is expected to be announced. Passenger movements are at some record high I noted.
So, guess some/a lot in Oz are more than able to afford overseas/local holidays despite the airlines offering increased fare hikes.
I ask again, what can LNP put on the table to validate a claim to office at the next election?
Cat
Yes that was my point.

They pretty much just seem to be counting on most voters having such a blind hatred of Labor that they frankly don’t really care about improving the country, or otherwise see Labor’s defeat as the only way to improve it.
That call would probably be accurate, as in (gestures to what’s going on in most of the rest of the world).

Yes, reportedly the only one.
By comparison, Better Call Saul was a logical and satisfying ending.
More than 100 officers have been deployed as part of a joint counter terror investigation after a caravan laden with explosives was found in Dural, in Sydney’s rural northwest.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Dave Hudson said police have already made arrests on the “periphery” of the investigation.
Premier Chris Minns said the government is devoting “massive amounts of police and government resources” to the investigation.
The caravan was laden with explosives and a note with the address of Jewish targets, including a synagogue.
A curious resident made the shocking discovery after looking inside a caravan which had been dumped on the side of Derriwong Rd at Dural, before promptly calling NSW Police. Sources said in addition to the address of the Sydney synagogue, a note reading “f**k the Jews” was also found inside.
Police are at this stage treating it as a credible terror threat and ever since the discovery on January 19, have been investigating those behind the plot.

Just to clarify, the Coalition and the far left are saying disinflation is insufficient and want Australia to enter a period of deflation. Despite Australia entering a position of real growth in wages.
Does anyone know what level of deflation is being sought and for how long?
With only a few months to the elections – which Labor could lose – as is the case in any two horse race, the time has arrived to call the LNP supporters here out.
If Dutton is going to be such a great choice in preference to Labor, then put the case for him here.
All we get from this mob – most of the time – is whinge/bitch anti-Labor stuff.
This is fair enough as this is an Oz tradition.
However, unless this ratbag lot can put something more substantial on the table, what is the point of their effort – other than a group bellyache?
Time will tell.
It is a possibility that the electorate, as fickle as a kid picking a doughnut or a Kit-Kat to eat, might think the LNP and Dutton are worth a go.
Not much can be done if this is the case.
But, beforehand, on this site anyway, let’s call out the LNP crew to provide for the rest of us what we might all expect from a Dutton lead LNP government.
I bet I will not get many takers as while this mob are great nit-pickers they have an empty cupboard to go to when it comes to actually policies.

The core inflation figures for year to year in Dec came in at 3.2% today.
This is good news for the Labor Party. Although the RBA’s target band is between 2 to 3 percent, importantly it shows that inflation is trending in the right direction.
The market consensus is now most likely that the RBA will cut 25 basis points next month.

Mavis In defending McMahon I think your going a bit far.
William McMahon was Australia’s first treasurer formally trained in economics. He brought extraordinary energy to the role. The economy performed strongly during McMahon’s tenure, although there are no major reforms to his name, and arguably pressures were allowed to build which led to the subsequent inflation of the 1970s. Never popular with his cabinet colleagues, McMahon’s public reputation was tarnished by his subsequent unsuccessful period as prime minister.

There really is no need to bring Sonia or Julian into the conversation. Not when you have Laurie Oakes’ character assessment:
Political journalist Laurie Oakes described McMahon as “devious, nasty, dishonest – he lied all the time and stole things” before describing an incident where McMahon attempted to steal a tape recorder from his radio station by claiming ownership of the device despite it having the radio station’s name engraved on it. He concludes by saying that McMahon was a “totally unworthy individual and the fact that he was Prime Minister of this country was a disgrace
”
I don’t whether the fact that McMahon was Prime Minister of this country was a disgrace or not.
One thing I am almost certain is that Dutton as PM of this will be a disaster for this country.

The core inflation figures for year to year in Dec came in at 3.2% today.
=======================================================
While actual inflation is at 2.4% pretty much in the middle of the RBA’s range.
The 3.2% is made up of the following Quarter data too.
Mar 2024: 1.1%
Jun 2024: 0.8%
Sep 2024: 0.8%
Dec 2024: 0.5%
Total: 3.2%
So if next quarter is at all similar to this one. Core inflation will be well in range to. As the 1.1% from Mar 2024 will be no longer in the figures and replaced with Mar 2025 figures to get the yearly rate.
Falls. You do not want to fall over if you are over 65.
Some stats.
https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/injury/falls
Obviously the economy managed by the Albanese government is only working well for some Australians.
Some points:
1) today Mosaic Brands indicated
thousands of retail workers will soon be out of a job after the receivers of collapsed fashion group Mosaic failed to find a buyer for all its chains, Millers, Rivers, Katies, Rockmans, Noni B. and others.
This impacts an additional 933 employees on top of the 650 job losses
People don’t have the money to spend beyond the essentials.
2) And Bankruptcies in Australia averaged 667.29 Companies from 1999 until 2024, reaching an all time high of 1442.00 Companies in November of 2024 and a record low of 192.00 Companies in January of 2021. source: Australian Securities and Investments Commission
November 2024 had the highest Bankruptcies in recent times
https://search.app/SkMkFQhdvSpQgobM8
3) House prices are the highest ever, rents continually increasing.
4) builders collapsing, trades people working in the more lucrative mining industry means less trades available for building homes.
The Apprentice $10,000 bonus is of no use if Builders can’t afford to keep an Apprentice. So how is the Apprentice subsidy going to work?
The builders too want a subsidy.
5) Homelessness and food insecurity increasing as we all can see prices of essential items are still increasing.
6) the people on Jobseeker, Youth Allowance are still living below the poverty line .
.7) The Smith Family have regular call outs for donations to equip the many poor children in Australia for school. Today I heard of a Facebook page ‘Backpack Venture ‘ to provide children with a backpack filled with school needs.
Yes, many Australian families can’t afford basic school equipment. And the public schools they attend are poorly funded.
This has been known since the Gillard government in 2010.
8) The US and UK provide school lunches. As most politicians ignore poor children this would be too high a cost to provide.
9) Domestic/partner violence with children effected is ignored by Labor, especially in first nations communities. Labor has no interest or care here.
10)Mental health problems from dysfunctional families, which the Albanese government also ignores with minimal funding causes past Australian of the Year, Mental Health expert Professor Patrick McGorry to despair.
The many here who praise Labor seem to ignore the Australians left behind.
By the Albanese government who prefers to fund the USA, obviously only certain businesses ( those run by millionaires and billionaires ), and wealthy Australians, in particular those who get high Federal funding at the religious and Independent schools their children attend.
So is the economy really in good shape? Not for many. But Chalmers and Albanese are doing very well. And fool many Labor devotees.
The country is in a mess with this Labor government.
The CFA is an amazing integrated fire fighting unit. Our small fire ended up with 40 fire trucks ( according to the local fire captain), all modern and two helicopters. Professions and volunteers working together to create an amazing service.
All the liberals have to offer is complains. They never invested in the Equipment, training or attempted to integrate the professional service with the volunteers.
And if it had not been for the amazing action it all would have been a lot worse.
Geez the guardian says LNP 53.1 labor 46.9 .
Wow!
Geez Morgan is 52-48
Service inflation is currently over 4 % deflation is nutty talk.
Even on that Guardian data which is extremely “optimistic” for the Coalition, they still aren’t making a primary of 40%. If they make 40%, I think they win the election.
