Three new federal poll results:
• The monthly Resolve Strategic poll from Nine Newspapers has Labor up two to 30%, the Coalition up one to 38%, the Greens down one to 12% and One Nation down one to 5%. This pollster does not provide two-party preferred, but if the 15% none-of-the-above vote is treated as a single (it includes an unlikely 12% independent vote), the result is almost exactly 50-50 based on preference flows in 2022. Both leaders are steady on approval and down a point on disapproval, Anthony Albanese to 35% and 52% and Peter Dutton to 41% and 41%, with Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister out from 35-34 to 38-35. The poll also finds a telling 55% professing no opinion as to which party has better handled the situation in the Middle East, with 22% favouring “Peter Dutton and the Liberals” and 18% “Anthony Albanese and Labor”. It was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1606.
• The weekly Roy Morgan poll had a tie on two-party preferred after a 51-49 result to the Coalition last time, from primary votes of Labor 31.5% (up one-and-a-half), Coalition 37.5% (down half), Greens 12.5% (down one) and One Nation 5.5% (up one). Using the two-party measure based on 2022 election flows, Labor leads 52-48, out from 51.5-48.5 The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1697.
• The Guardian’s routine early drop of the fortnightly Essential Research poll doesn’t include voting intention results. Stay tuned for later today on that one.
UPDATE: Essential Research’s voting intention results have Labor up three points to 32%, the Coalition down one to 34%, the Greens steady on 12%, One Nation steady on 8%, and undecided unchanged at 5%. The 2PP+ measure has Labor leading 49-47, with the balance undecided, after trailing 48-47 a fortnight ago. Further questions find fully 40% saying “our political system needs fundamental change”, compared with 48% who think it “needs some reform but is fundamentally sound” and only 12% who think it is “working well”. A semi-regular question on Israel’s military action in Gaza records, for some reason, an eight-point rise in “unsure” since August to 32%: 32% favour Israel’s permanent withdrawal, down seven, 18% a temporary ceasefire, down three, and 19% consider Israel’s actions justified, up two. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1139.

The likelihood of an early Federal election is very low.
Interest rate are showing signs of falling.
House prices are ever so slightly trending up.
Wages are trending up.
Employment is stable.
Christmas/Summer are sacrosanct.
Australians hate voting.
A few more lesser electoral matters need finalizing and results deconstructed.
NACC matters need to evolve.
Reynolds needs to be allowed to shoot the LNP in the foot again.
Dutton’s nuclear is an own goal to be feared some more.
Albanese continues to be seen as boringly acceptable.
The ME will become old news.
Murdoch and media family may not “get another contract”.
Barnaby is overdue for another disaster.
There’s still plenty of Federal LNP scuttlebutt to be devoured by the “boganista”.
The media would destroy Albanese (completely) if Albanese “gave Dutton the ball”
The Greens lack of success in the Qld. State election wil be a plus.
The Greens further success in the ACT needs to happen and dissolve!
Natural disasters can’t be mismanaged on a Morrison scale.
Labor will not revisit RGR or anything similar.
Further tax cuts before the next election.
The Greens continue to stick themselves with their own voodoo image.
And the list goes on.
The possible result of the next Federal election is another “natter”.

Jeers for Albanese and cheers for Dutton as leaders join Jewish communities to mark 7 October atrocities.
At least 41,870 Palestinians have been killed and 97,166 wounded in Gaza since Israel launched its military response to the 7 October attacks, the territory’s health authorities said on Sunday, with thousands more likely lost in the rubble.
The Australian foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, told the UN last month that the death toll in Gaza included more than 11,000 children.

It should have been surprising if Treasury was NOT modelling negative gearing, rather than that it was modelling it. It is basic housekeeping. And right now, we have a dead possum in the roof. Or worse, two live possums trashing the whole housing industry. Hurricane Milton became a category 5 storm on Monday and is on track to hit the west coast of Florida on Wednesday afternoon or evening. The hurricane is unusual for both its trajectory and rapid intensification, something climate scientists attribute to the warmer ocean temperatures of the Gulf of Mexico caused by climate change. But supporters of Donald Trump on social media have a different explanation for the hurricane’s dangerous potential. They say it’s President Joe Biden’s fault because the Democrats are engaging in weather manipulation to harm Republicans.
Matt Wallace, one of the most popular purveyors of garbage conspiracy theories on X and a vocal supporter of Trump, tweeted about a hurricane monitoring flight by NOAA on Sunday where he clearly tried to suggest something fishy was happening.
“Rumors are circulating about the strange-looking NOAA ‘data collection’ plane flight pattern through Hurricane Milton,” Wallace tweeted.

Home Affairs staff have reported mixed messages on cultural change inside the mega agency, following a year of groundbreaking turbulence and an abrupt leadership change.
A summary of 2024 census results from more than 11,400 Home Affairs staff, obtained by The Canberra Times, shows incremental improvements on some key cultural measures in the department which has been ranked one of the worst places to work in the public service.
The survey results, which the department is yet to publicly release, represent Stephanie Foster’s first scorecard as secretary. She was shuffled into the position by the Albanese government in November 2023 when long-serving boss Mike Pezzullo was sacked for breaching the APS Code of Conduct.
The department has been beset by instability since that time, including the fallout from the High Court’s ruling on indefinite immigration detention, and the response to the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict. The results show a long road ahead for senior leadership, who have publicly declared a mission to recruit the best and brightest to staff the agency responsible for Australia’s immigration and national security.
Asked whether they would recommend their agency as a good place to work, 60 per cent of staff confirmed they would, an increase of 3 percentage points from 2023.
But these results still lag 11 percentage points behind the Australian Public Service average, and eight percentage points behind agencies of a similar size (Defence, Services Australia and the Tax Office).
Attitudes to senior leaders in the department remained unchanged overall, with public servants giving their Senior Executive Service managers an average positive score of 66. The rating is still 4 percentage points behind the rest of the APS, and 2 behind other major agencies.
But public servants were feeling more positive about their senior leaders working as a team in 2024 – with 51 per cent reporting they did, a 6 percentage point increase from 2023.

I think I see Peter Dutton’s Outer Regional and Labor-held Western Suburbs seats with a high Muslim population collapsing before our eyes with his new policy of not having a cigarette paper’s worth of distance between himself and Jewish-Australians.
Morrison gov and last Howard gov waited too long to call election and had a pre election interest rate increase hammer them.
Fact is massive spending by labor state and federal throw in tax cuts and 1.1 million people imported by labor fed government and not being able to send them home due to appeals is inflationary.
Fact also Australia is an export economy and interest rate cuts all around the planet and ongoing will be feeding into our economy soon.China is also adding stimulus now.More inflation.
Electricity rebates temporary and the reserve bank says forget about a cut.Even extending rebates may not hold off what’s coming via global inflation via our export demand.
Need to go in Feb election labor as a world of pain via interest rate rise/s more likely than cuts.
57-43 now red zone 50/50 trend suggests more pain coming.
AFR reporting now international students in August an all time record in Australia.
679,293 .
Temp graduate visas also reached an all time record.
Try getting them out of the country labor! They are appealing now in tens of thousands for asylum when visas expire.Inflationary -interest rate increase anyone?

You would think it obvious that Dutton and Bandt would listen to the urgings of the DG ASIO. But, no. Too interested in votes.
Prime Minister Albanese has consistently sought inclusion rather than division and has consistently sought to reduce communal hatreds rather than to increase them. Dutton and Bandt have done exactly the opposite. They could at least pretend to suppress their inner hatreds. But, no. Too interested in votes.
I find it hard to understand how Dutton and Bandt could be this bad at it when it’s a key requirement of their jobs and they’ve had decades to get good at it.
Thank you BK
Morning all. Thanks for the roundup BK. IMO Albo and Labor must stick to the line to not support Hamas or Israel in the growing Gaza conflict. Dutton is being divisive again, but to call out his lies means criticising the scale of Israel’s response in Gaza.
Despite Gaza, cost of living is the real issue for most people and has been for two years. Higher wages are not the cause. For most industries supplying basics, wages are not more than 20% of costs. The other 80% of causes need attacking.
Many causes of inflation relate to monopolies raising prices during shocks and not lowering them when the crisis is over. Lack of competition in Australian retailing means price regulation is entirely justifiable IMO. The empty chip packet ad was true. But highlighting the problem without offering a solution wins no votes.
The other area of needed government intervention is housing. Public housing only affects the bottom 20% of the market. Labor must take more action to address the middle 60%. Major change is needed, political will is lacking.
Labor was gun shy of major reforms when it took office. Now it is paying for that. There was too much cautious, compromised reform, like the NACC and vehicle emissions. This has undercut Labor’s ability to argue for major change now.
It is great to sea massive increases in Australia’s marine national park estate. Australia goes to the top of all countries on earth for the extent of its marine national park estate.
Well done!
Stand by for the conga line of Greens politicians giving public support to Environment Minister Plibersek and the Albanese Labor Government.
Soc
Every single major Labor Government reform has been delayed, diluted or blocked completely by Dutton and Bandt.
Current major reforms being blocked by the Dynamic Duo are cheaper access to housing for your 60% of Australian homeowners, protection from false information from the media, a massive package of aged care reform, protection from religious discrimination, a program with $22 billion to speed restructuring of Australian manufacturing and national reform of biodiversity conservation and protection.
We know that the Greens badly wanted to vote against all of Labor’s 43/30 climate action reforms but were shamed in not doing a repeat of their previous climate action wrecking a decade ago. Nevertheless they did manage to delay passage of the legislation for six months. They are no complaining about delays in climate action. Mongrels.
The reduced, delayed or blocked outcomes are a pity for us Australians.
But it is what it is.
Thank you, BK. I do love the cartoon with the two peeps living above the tobacco shop.

____________
The nice thing about taking action on affordability at the lower end of the market is that it does improve affordability for the middle also, by taking people out of competition in the private market. Same goes for high end properties also, but probably less reasonable politically.
ALP running the Israel lobbies lines for them – pro Palestine actions are termed “rallies”, and are denounced, pro Israel actions are ” vigils ” and are attended by the PM & LOTO.
The actions by both parties domestically are equivalent and should be treated as such.
Boerwar 8:37am
That is not entire true. I know that in an area I am familiar with (vehicle emissions) your statement is incorrect.
The Teals and Greens, and numerous industry submissions including one I was involved in from Engineers Australia, were all in favour of stronger action sooner. But Labor (Catherine King) delayed it after lobbying from car manufacturers. This was idiotic, only protecting workers in foreign countries. It turned a vote winner into disappointment. The LNP were never going to agree and should have been ignored.
As for shrinkflation, this article outlines some more practical soutions than those proposed.

It must be a pretty bad place Australia !
Thousands make applications to be allowed to come to Australia everyday.
Thousands of students come to Australia to attend schools, tertiary institutions and complete post graduate work.
Thousands come to Australia on work visas from a variety of countries as unqualified workers, trades persons and professional workers.
Thousands of rich people like to come to Australia to buy houses.
Thousands like to have the safe haven rights to come to Australia.
Thousands walk off planes and overstay their visas.
Thousands of people find a way to express their opinion in the media about everything known to mankind and some of it is actually true.
Thousands of people like the right they have to express their dislike of other places without being punished or discriminated for their dislikes.
Many come to Australia to play sport.
The big one is that millions living in Australia like to complain about anything and everything. Complaining has become the National sport.
If no one listens you march, rally, have a vigil, make a sign, complain on media, join PB (or the like) and dye your hair pink.
In Australia you can remind politicians that they’re not special.
In Australia it’s bloody hard to be put in gaol !
In Australia you can buy overpriced processed food and have it delivered.
In Australia you can buy the very worst of American takeaway food and have it delivered.
You can order a beer and have it delivered.
Australia has so many elections that Australians detest each and every election to the point that the only thing keeping Australia from tyranny is a bloody awful sausage sandwich.
Now where’s my other sock BK ?
And just like a cracked record up pops Pied with another headline from the West Australian.
Why is there a bricklayer shortage Pied?
Because the useless Liberals shut down apprentice training, that’s why.
Why do we import tradesmen Pied?

1.1 million on all sorts of visas labor federally in 2 years brought them here and could not even get enough skilled people in instead students etc.
Also another area labor has failed the ABC online today says is to place the skilled already here in Australia into jobs they came for as labor failed on qualification matching .
Also the West Aus points out today that WA has the most patients to gps in Australia.
Another labor federal failure.
Albanese is a scum human his actions prove it.
Thanks BK , the story about Qld premier Miles was interesting. He has undoubtedly done a good job over the last nine months and has left nothing in the tank. It looks like he and Labor are heading for a big defeat based on the LNPs/ local medias crime and punishment agenda and an it’s time factor. He has surprised a lot of people though and ran rings around Crisifulli in the the debate . He might even pull back a few points in the polling if he keeps going this way.

Essential Primaries are now up. Another poll showing good news for Labor. This is now three in a row suggesting an uptick in the ALP primary. We should have a Newspoll in 5 days time, so I’d say that will also show a primary uptick for the ALP.
Anyway, Essential Report figures…
* ALP 32% (up 3). Big jump for a poll not known for big movements.
* LNP 34% (down 1)
* GRN 12% (steady)
* PHON 8% (steady)
* Clive 1% (down 1)
* Others/Indies 13% (down 1)
Their 2PP 49 to 47 (ALP ahead)
Rough PB 2PP calculation 52.4% ALP (which I have jumping up from roughly 50.3% last time).
Of note also with the report, is the age breakdown section, with the Greens now polling 22% in the 18-34 age bracket, a jump of 5 pts in a fortnight, and within reach of overtaking the LNP.
Having said that, their sample size is usually smallish (around 1030).
It’s a polling outfit not usually known for big jumps either way.

How long does it take to train a medical doctor Pied? A lot longer than the two and half years of Labor. Who was running the government over two and a half years ago Pied? The useless Liberals.
@Sceptic – “For Albo the choice should have been obvious decry the losses on both sides”
I believe he has done exactly that.
Labor is the only party doing that, while the Greens and the Coalition want the country all the way behind one of the combatants in a way that the Resolve polling demonstrates Australians are just not interested in doing.
The Greens have grossly overestimated the support that accrues to them by running their mouths and falsely accusing the government of supporting genocide, and Resolve shows that clearly. What I’ve been hearing on the ground is many supporters of the Greens for environmental and other policy reasons are very uncomfortable with the way the Greens have acted and talked on this issue and the numbers reflect that. The PB Greens have never been representative.
I don’t know whether Dutton is also overestimating the support he’ll get for being all the way behind Israel or just thinks it is worth consolidating the voting bloc who approves of it
goll:
It must be a pretty bad place Australia !
Thousands make applications to be allowed to come to Australia everyday.
Thousands of students come to Australia to attend schools, tertiary institutions and complete post graduate work.
Yeah, Post Grad work in Nail Technician-ery is a hard slog.
Bottom line:
Import the 3rd World, become the 3rd World.
Albo’s and Labor’s ambitions for Australia are pretty transparent.

Why would NZ take defence seriously?
1. Who would want to invade it
2. If someone did they would expect us to bail them out.
There has been bipartisan agreement on this ever since the RNZAF retired its last combat jets in 2001
I don’t know whether Dutton is also overestimating the support he’ll get for being all the way behind Israel or just thinks it is worth consolidating the voting bloc who approves of it
Dutts took a lesson from what happened to Jeremy Corbyn.
So did Albo, but his take is he’ll get a pass because he’s special.
++++++++++++++++++++
The bottom line is it’s a National Security issue, as Dutts keeps telling Albo, who keeps insisting it’s a humanitarian issue.
That’s Labor’s problem, Albo is stuck in last century’s gesture politics, while Australia has moved on.
@mj “Have a look at the trend of polls. Labor’s vote going to tank in Western Sydney next election and other areas with similar demographics. And it was avoidable. You don’t need a poll to see that.”
Labor doesn’t change the country’s foreign policy to suck up to Muslims in Western Sydney.
That’s called having principles, for those of you who regularly attack Labor for not having principles just because their principles aren’t your principles.
Besides, seriously, are you suggesting that Muslims in Western Sydney are going to switch to the Coalition on a 2pp basis?
At worst, an independent pops up, but I question whether a single issue independent raging about Gaza would get enough traction to push Labor into 3rd place. The treating of Muslim voters like a monolith who will all vote based on Gaza is rather naive (that’s the nice one way to put it).
Dead cat bounce in polls for labor like CUJO resting now in peace.
Oakshotte, why would anyone want to invade New Zealand? What assets do they have that wouldn’t be cheaper to buy than to maintain an army of occupation and get them for free. I would think it logical to have a defence budget proportional to the degree of risk. To the best of my recollection, the only battles New Zealanders have been involved in daring this and the previous century were those where they fought on behalf of others, and probably punched above their weight.
I guess we could say the same about Australia.
I’m thinking Albo goes to a December Election to avoid potential fallout from the Reynolds/Higgins Defamation Judgement due next year.
Most likely outcome?
Greens/Labor Government, supported by Indies.
@Badthinker:
“Bottom line:

Even for you that’s spectacularly racist and stupid.
Australia, like America, is a country built on immigration from all over the place. Not that long ago the Badthinkers of Australia were screaming about Asian immigration (as John Howard did). Now it’s Africans.
Why don’t you go down to the Huddle in North Melbourne and actually meet some Sudanese people for yourself, it might make it a bit harder for you to just spout off ludicrous slogans that treat them like cattle because of where they were born.

Badthinker, it makes more sense to wait until after the Reynolds case because the horrible attitudes of Liberals will plastered all over every front page in the country.
@Granny – “Oakshotte, why would anyone want to invade New Zealand? ”
Xi is a Lord of the Rings superfan who wants to own Bag End, but don’t tell him I told you.
But yeah if any country can get away with just being too much bother to invade, New Zealand is probably it. Have enough navy to deter piracy and do rescues etc and that’s really all they need innit.
Arky imo there is no upside taking a pro-Israel or pro-Palestine stance, it jeopardises social cohesion and assists wannabe fascists like Dutton to stoke fears.
I’m not suggesting these seats are going to the Coalition, I just see it as a bad move socially and domestically to be taking sides in a heated conflict.

Huh?
You’re playing a game of Spot The Racist with yourself and a mirror?
