Resolve Strategic: Labor 36, Coalition 34, Greens 12 (open thread)

Labor still well ahead on voting intention, but Resolve Strategic records prime ministerial approval in net negative territory and an ongoing decline in support for an Indigenous Voice.

Courtesy of the Age/Herald, the latest monthly federal voting intention numbers from Resolve Strategic have with Labor down a point to 36%, the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens up one to 12% and One Nation steady on 5%. As ever, no two-party preferred result is provided, but I make it to be 55-45 to Labor based on 2022 election preferences compared with about 55.5-44.5 last time.

As with last week’s Newspoll, the poll gives Anthony Albanese his first net negative personal rating as prime minister, with approval down four to 40% and disapproval up five to 47%. Peter Dutton is up four to 35% and down one to 44%, with Albanese retaining a 43-28 lead as preferred prime minister, in from 46-25.

The worst news for the government comes once again from the Indigenous Voice, with a forced response question now putting no ahead 57-43, out from 54-46 a month ago. A question allowing for an uncommitted response has no leading 49% to 35%. Combining this month’s results with last month’s to get reasonable sub-samples, no leads 56-44 in New South Wales, 51-49 in Victoria, 61-39 in Queensland and Western Australia and 59-41 in South Australia, with yes leading only in Tasmania by 56-44 off a particularly small sample.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1604.

  1. I heard my first NO advertisement this morning on a radio station that only plays hits from the 60s and 70s. This station absolutely smashes every other station for ratings in the 65+ years demographic. The ad only said two things. First, if the Voice was successful it would lead to a massive increase in Aboriginal activism. Second, if the Voice was successful it would lead to demands for financial reparations. Such a blatant attempt to scare older non-Aboriginal Australians is a disgrace.

Best argument for the Voice I’ve heard:
“when we listen to people, and make decisions based on their local knowledge, we get better outcomes”.

You know that’s not how it’s going to work, don’t you? Of course you do. But you have to slip a Liberal talking point in. 🙄

Could happen but its up to the government to make sure that doesn’t happen.

  6. While it is likely that the ship will be successfully towed to drydock, it is certainly out of action for a long time to come.

What good will drydock do? Didn’t Ukraine just demonstrate that anything in drydock is a sitting duck?

  7. And could I just add, Mavis, that it’s either, ‘Pepys’ or Pepsi, not some bastardised love child of both: ‘Pepsy’. It irritates me massively whenever I see it.

  8. AR 8:45pm

Yes re the drydock. Not only that, the drydock itself is a burnt out ruin. It will need a lot of work before a ship can be repaired in it.

    [‘Go fuck yourself Mavis.

    Succinct enough for you, sport?’]

Yes, dear, though I’m not sure one can have intercourse with one’s self. But I’m sure you’ll provide a legal argument thereof, in about five hundred paras, of circa five hundred words.

  10. My ‘offending’ post is neither the longest, or contains anything near the longest paragraph on this blog today, Mavis (and certainly none of my five paragraphs even approached your asinine 250 word limit).

You’re right about one thing I guess. You are not worth the effort of responding to with anything more that a line or two.

  11. Just trying to be realistic about it all Mavis. No doubt a lot of lip service will be paid to it in certain quarters but I don’t expect much to come out of it.

And just it case you have the wrong idea, I have already stated here previously that I am not one of the NO crowd.

Enlighten me then, Mavis. And not with another snide insult, if you’re able.

  15. Lars Von Trier @ #1930 Saturday, September 16th, 2023 – 9:16 pm

In fact mavis – c@t exalts in her ignorance.

Better than exalting in sliminess, Lars Von Trier. As you obviously seem to.

Also, I admit when I’m wrong and learn something new. You can’t even answer questions put to you, yet you spend every day posing them for others. Disingenuously and as obviously, as to why, as the nose on your face, of course.

  16. Yep, just checked, I’ve got the spelling right:

Samuel Pepys FRS was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament and is most famous for the diary he kept for a decade.

So there can only be some asinine reason for you spelling it incorrectly, Mavis, that has contributed to my ‘ignorance’, as you want to characterise it. I’m all ears.

    Rex “The Mouse” Mossop
A Rugby League (and Union) international 2nd Rower, who became a commentator and whose misuse of the English language was so egregious that he was commonly called Rox Messup. From a time when Rugby League was a much simpler sport.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_Mossop

John Howard and Tony Abbott were able to prosecute Mossop world view successfully as long as they were leaders of their party.
I think SSM plebiscite got good support amongst Liberal voters because Tim Wilson was one of them and he successfully argued SSM case with examples like that his mother won’t vote against her self interest.

The problem for Voice referendum from Liberal party POV is that prominent Liberal party FN people argue against Voice referendum and Ken Wyatt is no longer prominent.

  20. Aljazeera: Global South leaders demand end of ‘plundering international order’

G77+China summit comes amid growing frustration with the Western-led world order because of widening differences over the Russian war in Ukraine, the fight against climate change and the global economic system.

    https://www-aljazeera-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2023/9/16/global-south-leaders-demand-end-of-plundering-international?amp_gsa=1&amp_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQGsAEggAID#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16948631155732&csi=0&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aljazeera.com%2Fnews%2F2023%2F9%2F16%2Fglobal-south-leaders-demand-end-of-plundering-international

“Cuba’s leader says the Global South must “change the rules of the game” of the international order after centuries of dominance by wealthy Western nations putting their own interests first.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel said developing countries were the main victims of a “multidimensional crisis” in the world today from “abusive unequal trade” to devastating climate change.

“After all this time that the North has organised the world according to its interests, it is now up to the South to change the rules of the game,” Diaz-Canel said at the opening of the G77+China summit in Havana.

Emerging countries represent 80 percent of the world’s population. The meeting comes at a time of growing frustration with the Western-led world order because of widening differences over the Russian war in Ukraine, the fight against climate change and the global economic system.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres joined 30 heads of state and government from Africa, Asia and Latin America at the two-day gathering.

At the opening of the meeting on Friday, Guterres called for a world “more representative and responsive to the needs of developing economies”, stressing nations were “trapped in a tangle of global crises”.

“The bloc was established by 77 countries of the Global South in 1964 “to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity”, according to the group’s website.”

  21. i can emagin Siman bermingham will follow his close friend marise payne shortly in retiring from the senate most likely likely after the voice he hinted in his coments on mmarise paynes retirement that when he leaves the senate at least he will have a true friend how ever he desided to not premote the voice

  22. I’m ignoring yet another question from you, Lars Von Trier, that, as Ven correctly points out, you would never answer yourself. Now I’m going to bed as I have a big day ahead of me tomorrow.

  23. he was aparently close to brandis and pine theit seeems the right can then get michaelia cash as senate leader with james paterson deputy given wongs strong foreign performents and payne gone cant emagin bermingham sticking arround much longer hume could also lead libs in senate

  24. The poise of Julian Cleary in that confrontation was impressive.
There was another meeting between them, i think on Andrew Denton, where Moose was going off about men dressing in women’s clothing and a photo of him in drag during a Leagues Club revue was produced. A sudden silence occurred.

  25. suprised all the tributes claiming marise payne was a champion for woman and for modderit ishues she hardly ever publickly advicated a liberal position niver does bermingham if fletcher retired matt kean could fill his spot the only real modderit left is archer

Okay, Mavis, you can’t explain it and you have behaved as expected. I’ll put it down to your Parkinsons, or excessive alcohol consumption, as you have detailed previously, then that you can’t spell the guy’s name correctly. And your coarseness, that you prefer to insult someone some more, rather than explain yourself. It’s not a pissing contest, Mavis, to see who insults the most, as you seem to want to characterise it, and, of course I win. 🙄

I asked you a simple question. And you still haven’t answered it. I guess that means that you will continue your inane misspelling of the man’s name. Bravo! What a pyrrhic victory. 😐

  29. “You Green Political Party folk bang on incessantly, day in day out, about Labor’s perceived lack of principles and alleged ‘lowest common denominator’ brand of ‘weak centralism’ politics and yet the melancholy truth is that Labor was bound to do exactly what you now bemoan as poor politics because it committed to the Voice referendum as a matter of principle – it was in the party platform – BEFORE the last election.”

    @Andrew_Earlwoodsays

Bingo! This in a nutshell. I’ve seen Lars also make comments that Albo should scrap the referendum because its poor politics. But other times played the Labor has no ticker and it’s Tweedledee and Tweedledum with the Liberals.

Picks and chooses when it suits them when to play smart politics and when not, just to skew a narrative against Labor.

Can you explain what could be the reason India requested Australia for ‘monoclonal antibody ‘?

Nipah virus: Kerala shuts schools, Australian antibodies sought | 10 point

  35. Marise Payne will always be remembered as the Defence Minister when both the Attack Class submarine and Hunter Class frigate decisions were made and contracts negotiated. Few individual defence ministers before or since will have had so much impact on the RAN.

The PLAN might award her the Honour Medal of the Red Star.

  36. Some good mooseisms in the article Been There but not my favourite Rugby League outrage.

Ray Warren: there’s Kevin Kingston and Matt Moylan for Panthers and Timana Tahu and Robbie Rochow for the Knights. There’s a lot of alliteration on the field tonight.

Peter Sterling: What about Isaah Yeo, Rabs, he’s from Dubbo

(I really wish I knew what he thought alliteration was)
