Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor (open thread)

Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead returning to a height it last enjoyed in early September, although there is little movement on the primary vote.

The Australian reports the latest Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead widening from 55-45 to 56-44, although Labor and the Coalition are unchanged on the primary vote at 38% and 33% respectively, with the Greens up one to 11% and One Nation down one to 7%. Both leaders’ personal ratings have softened, though from a substantially higher base in the case of Anthony Albanese, who is down three on approval to 53% and up two on disapproval to 37%, while Peter Dutton is down two to 33% and up four to 52%. Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister narrows from 58-26 to 54-28. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1514.

Surely there aren’t too many people under the age of 30 who still willingly suffer through a medium as archaic and redundant as radio? I’d assume most would know how to either plug a USB cable into their car stereo or to connect up to it with Bluetooth.
    ______
I think radio still rates its arse off among young people. It’s free, and a lot of people wouldn’t want to sit through pretentious podcasts. They just want some trashy interviews, banter and some music.

  2. Well, if no-one is going to tell me the limit, or who it applies to, I will feel free to ignore it.

Actually, unless it is a limit imposed by William, I will ignore it even if someone does tell me what it is! 🙂

Player One, since I am one of Lars’ targets, and I post largely on the issue of Russia’s destructive and unwarranted invasion of Ukraine, you had better not be insinuating that Ukraine’s plight at the hands of aggressive Russian imperialism is a topic which you think is ‘too boring’ to deserve discussion on this, or indeed any other, blog? How mightily inconsiderate of those Ukrainians to be boring you with their tiresome resistance to the Kremlin’s genocidal imperialism! 😡

Is the limit to do with off-topic posts? Because I think my posts are by and large on topic. They are just not popular with some people. Perhaps the limit is to do with popularity? In that case I think we are probably both in trouble.

  6. Is Kyle Sandilands the lefty Alan Jones?

Don’t listen to either. From what little about Kyle that gets into the media that I consume, he seems to be a bit of a dick.

Stephen Kotkin pointed out a number of truisms in his excellent podcast on (mostly) Ukraine just today.

    https://youtu.be/dTXEmz6nJGk

One of them, was that whenever Putin bombs a civilian target, the donation of heavy weaponry to Ukraine from the West and NATO increases.

Many other observations from this student of Russian history.

Do keep up. Ukraine is effecting a staged withdrawal from that city, and focusing its efforts elsewhere.

Anyone, and I mean anyone, who calls someone a ‘white c**t’ in an APS workplace is in immediate trouble if a complaint is raised… regardless of whether the verbal assault is leveled at a man or a woman.
    Ditto ‘black c**t’.
The terms are sexist and racist.
    Context matters.
So does out and out racism and sexism.

I’m totally with you there Boerwar. In any society that claims to be based on equality for all, that’s the only way it can be. Anything less just makes a mockery of the whole concept.

Player, that’s a matter for you. And it’s not that I’m being critical; more a matter of it being out of character for you. I have tell you that I start losing interest when paras exceed around 300 words, and I’m particularly uninterested when they’re accompanied by repetitive lists. And it must be said, you’re not guilty thereof.

Sprocket, thank you. I’ll give this a watch later tonight. One general remark on the observation you quote: Putin’s stubborn targeting of civilians in this war puts me very much in mind of the tale of the scorpion and the frog.

  16. Nath:

Personally, I just hate having someone else choose the music I listen to, really hate listening to the same few songs again and again (regular readers of this blog might recall that I have a rather low tolerance for repetition), and especially hate desperately switching from station to station in a vain attempt to find one – just one – that is actually playing music instead of the usual sea of mindless chatter, sports, and – worst of all – National Tiles ads, and it shocks me that anyone with the means to put on their own soundtrack would willingly endure the alternative unless they’ve forgotten their phone/cable or have run out of charge. Torrenting still exists for those who don’t want to shell out for a streaming service.

But then I’m the sort of person who genuinely enjoys watching election coverage, so I’m probably in no position to judge how others’ choices of entertainment.

  17. Asha

Nothing wrong with watching election night coverage. Certainly since 2017 in WA, though 2019 was a bit a of a crap night.

  18. AUKUS:

    Worst deal ever.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-28/defence-reveals-50-per-cent-contingency-for-cost-overruns-inside/102275806

Incredible risk, to the point that pillars 2 and 3 are both bordering on incredulous.

But ‘if all goes to plan’ $260-368 BILLION the government has run up the flag pole only gets us to 2054, at which point between 3 and 5 SSN_AUKUS class subs will still be NOT built yet. This not me putting shade on the program – THAT is according to the Government’s ‘PLAN’.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-28/defence-reveals-50-per-cent-contingency-for-cost-overruns-inside/102275806

Marles was fulminating today about ‘The Greens’, but in truth $500 billion will only get us to towards the end of the build in the 2060s (yep folks, it is ‘the plan’ to take FORTY YEARS to build eight submarines) but then there is still up to another FORTY YEARS of sustainment. Which will costs hundreds of billions more by the time the last SSN_AUKUS submarine is finally decommissioned.

And to think we could get a ‘cradle to grave’ 10 boat nuclear SNN boat program from the French for around $250-300 billion (between 2023 and the 2080s). Literally only between a quarter and a third of the cost of AUKUS … for kit that is just … better … for Australia’s needs and purposes (even if that means patrolling maritime sea lanes in the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan).

    FMD!

  19. ” Ah, the Lord Haw Haw of the blog has reappeared. ”

And you have nothing of substance to offer. Just a football fan degree of ‘barracking’. And snark. You are no shrinking violet. Certainly no victim of cyber bullying. So I shall return fire.

It takes some courage … and brain cells … to go again one’s team. You have neither. Something you have demonstrated time and again.

  20. Kyle Sandilands was described as “controversial” on the ABC news. That’s better than “colourful”, like some of his guests.

  21. Psephology time – this time from Germany:

“Russia is to blame for the war in Ukraine. That’s the opinion of just under 40% of Russian speakers in Germany surveyed by the dimap research institute on behalf of DW; 15% believe Ukraine is to blame, while 27% think both are responsible.

For the purposes of the survey, “Russian speakers” refers to native speakers with a migration history in Russia or another former republic of the Soviet Union. In other words, they were either born there or have or had at least one parent who emigrated from there to Germany.

Who is to blame for the war?
    Russia 39%
    Ukraine 15%
    Both 27%
    Neither 7%

Has your opinion of President Putin changed since the outbreak of the war?
    Strongly positive 6%
    Fairly positive 8%
    Fairly negative 22%
    Strongly negative 43%

    https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-war-what-do-russian-speakers-in-germany-think/a-65457001

Conclusion: the Russian diaspora in Germany views the war in Ukraine much more in line with general German opinion than with opinion back in Russia. A very hopeful indication of the prospects for ‘de-zombifying’ the Russian population once they are liberated from the repressive yoke of Putin’s Kremlin.

I’ve become persuaded that a self-imposed limit like this just cedes the field to those like you who want Ukraine’s plight to drift silently out of everyone’s consciousness. No thanks.

  25. That’s disappointing EA. I think it hurts your cause.

I have another issue too – some of your posts have been inaccurate. I dont think that helps the cause either?

  26. Critics of NATO from the Left/Russia cannot name one single country which was dragooned into the alliance against its will. The same cannot be said for how Russia is trying to press-gang Ukraine into its own so-called ‘sphere of influence’.

NATO is like the Delian League transitioned into the Athenian Empire, with America as Athens

Although using your crude analogy, Persia under Shāhanshāh Putin is not yet defeated.

It is amusing when people who know little or nothing about ancient history try to cherry-pick it for precedents. Equating the Delian League with NATO is ridiculously inapt.
