Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor (open thread)

Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead returning to a height it last enjoyed in early September, although there is little movement on the primary vote.

The Australian reports the latest Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead widening from 55-45 to 56-44, although Labor and the Coalition are unchanged on the primary vote at 38% and 33% respectively, with the Greens up one to 11% and One Nation down one to 7%. Both leaders’ personal ratings have softened, though from a substantially higher base in the case of Anthony Albanese, who is down three on approval to 53% and up two on disapproval to 37%, while Peter Dutton is down two to 33% and up four to 52%. Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister narrows from 58-26 to 54-28. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1514.

  1. Seemingly not satisfied killing Ukrainian civilians, Russia’s efforts at military defence in Belgorod have killed four Russian civilians now:

“Four people were killed when their car hit a mine in Belgorod Oblast, Russia.

As preliminary data states, the explosion occurred near the village of Zhuravlivka. Four young men were going fishing and decided to drive to the river in a field in their car. However, they hit a mine, and an explosion occurred. As a result, everyone in the car was killed.

In April, Vladimir Zhdanov, head of the Shebekino district of Belgorod Oblast, said that they were digging trenches in the region to “play it safe”.”

For the sake of themselves and their own fellow Russians, people with free minds and decent hearts in Russia need to rise up and topple their sanguinary tyrant in the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin.

  2. Moscow is clearly unconvinced of its ability to keep hold of their illegally obtained occupation of Crimea:

“Senior managers of Russian companies’ branches in temporarily occupied Crimea have been instructed to prepare for evacuation.

    Source: National Resistance Center (NRC)

Quote: “The leadership of the representative offices of Russian state-owned companies on the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula has been tasked with preparing for evacuation.”

Details: Russian state-owned banks in the peninsula and the Russian proxy “Crimean railway” have received this information.

The NRC believes that this indicates comprehensive preparation measures for occupiers’ “evacuation”.

After all, as the instruction states, not only the top officials but also their families should evacuate.”

Go on, rats. Surely you know a sinking ship when you smell one? Don’t you remember the Kursk sinking, and how much Putin cared for those sunken submariners then?

  3. This tweet is interesting re the bombing of the Nordstream 2 pipeline. Yes Russia did it.

    ***UPDATE***

Slowly information is coming out about the #Russian Navy ships operating around #NordStream before the attacks. E.g. https://dr.dk/nyheder/seneste/forsvaret-bekraefter-russisk-specialfartoej-var-i-naerheden-af-nord-stream-kort-foer…

The presence of SS-750 with a DSRV submersible is **highly suspicious**

Looks like a Russian “submarine rescue ship” with a minsub with a mechanical arm was in the area before it blew up. It could have used the arm to place explosives.

    =============

Socrates, I’ll be watching out for what, if anything, Seymour Hersh will have to say about this development in the case of the Nord Stream 2 ‘unannounced decommissioning’.

  5. Albo’s having a bad PR week. This is why I liked Bill Shorten, he got out there during the years between elections so you got to know the guy. Absent Albo turns up right at the election. waits for scomo to fuck it then sneaks across the line. It turns out, he’s all about Rorts for the AFL. and hanging out with Kyle fucking Sandilands. A man who shouldn’t be near the PM’s office.

    This Australian success story.

Where the fuck are albo’s handlers. What fucking judgement is that.

  6. Been There,
Albo hasn’t enumerated a plan. It was one of my big complaints of his stewardship of the ALP.

There maynot be a opposition leader, but I have a strong feeling that this weekend will be the end of the honeymoon.

    What rort for the AFL?

Tassie has been wanting a AFL team for years and needs to suitable stadium as part of any license because that is what some of the clubs have said it must have before they will agree to granting Tasmania its own AFL team.

  8. Mexicanbeemer,
So why is the federal government getting involved?

I have no problems with Tassie having the want for a team. But people tonight are sleeping in cars less than a 1000 meters from where this thing will be built. The 350M that the STATE government is spending could build houses for them instead. Likewise for the 250M from the federal government.

Also, it’s a visual eyesore. it’ll overshadow the cenotaph which does deserve some deference. And it’ll fuck up traffic in the city.

It’s just really disappointing that Albo is just flying around granting wishes willy nilly. There’s a cost of living crisis for a lot of people and this really is tone deaf. It proves the point that I don’t like hearing that both sides are just as bad.

  9. May Day is Coming.
Does Ukraine have the missile capacity to give the annual parade some needed fireworks?
Maybe a couple of off-target hits on the centre of the fascist regime – Red Square, The Kremlin, too.

  10. Ukraine Postings.
Enough Already – keep on providing the informative and regular updates regarding the criminal invasion of Ukraine by their fascist state neighbour.

Government to consider Port of Darwin future

A review into lease of the Port of Darwin to a Chinese company will examine whether a series of previous reviews into the matters are now out of date.

The review, which was first flagged by Anthony Albanese shortly after last year’s election, is being overseen by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PMC).

In response to questions about the terms of reference, a spokesperson for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet said today:

The government has asked PMC to review the circumstances surrounding the Port of Darwin. This includes consideration of the findings and outcomes of previous reviews into the Port of Darwin lease to the Landbridge Group, and to advise if these outcomes remain contemporary or if any action is required.

So, let me get this right … first, we need a review to tell us if we need a review. And if it says “yes”, then we will have a review. Which, like all the previous reviews, will simply be tabled and then ignored. Until someone decides we need another review.

How about we just have a review into why we have so many pointless reviews?

  14. Posters with skin in the game is part of the diversity of views we want and need.

I have disagreed with EA on occasion wrt Ukraine and felt the debate was rational and worthwhile.

Yes, EA posts a lot and often too many long posts. But it is hard to demand brevity on an issue that is so consequential in general and so close to someone’s heart. Especially as there are plenty of other posters posting very regularly on their pet subjects.

It is also hard to demand less antagonism when it’s impossible to know who starts it – it is often just rehashing old grievances anyways. Surely this issue is one where antagonism and strong feelings is entirely understandable.

So lobby God for some sort of post per day limit (or length limit) or just scroll by. Or block. Or snipe away if that’s your thing.
