Federal voting intention numbers from the latest fortnightly Essential Research poll have both parties down a point on the primary vote from a fortnight ago, with Labor at 33% and the Coalition at 30%, with the Greens enjoying a curiously timed three point surge to 17%, One Nation down two to 6% and undecided unchanged at 5%. Presumably reflecting the elevated result for the Greens, Labor is up two on the 2PP+ measure at 55% and the Coalition are down two to 40%, with undecided steady at 5%.
The poll also featured the pollster’s monthly “favourability ratings” for the two leaders, whom respondents rate on a scale of one to ten rather than provide straight approval and disapproval responses. Anthony Albanese’s results were little changed from late November, with 47% rating him seven or higher (up one), 27% from four to six (up one) and 22% from zero to three (down one), while Peter Dutton is respectively at 26% (down two), 31% (down one) and 35% (up two).
Support for an Indigenous voice increased two points to 65% with opposition down two to 35%, while 30% said they felt well informed about the proposal compared with 37% for poorly informed. Forty-three per cent rated that the country was headed in the right direction (down one), compared with 37% for the wrong direction (up one). The 300 respondents from New South Wales were again asked about approval of the state leaders, with Dominic Perrottet up four on approval to 51% and down three on disapproval to 33%, while Chris Minns at is steady at 38% and down two to 25%.
The poll was conducted Wednesday to Monday from a sample of 1000.

… and do you think that Russia is winning?… Really?… They seriously lost ground after the Ukrainian offensive, then they have desperately tried to mount a counter-offensive with exactly little or no gains (but with huge losses in men and equipment), and now the Ukrainians are ready for the 2023 Spring offensive using modern Western weaponry and more trained soldiers.
Good luck to Putin and his little internet stormtroopers….

The Albanese government has agreed to a demand by Opposition leader Peter Dutton and will have the Australian Electoral Commission mail a pamphlet to voters seeking to explain the Voice to Parliament. The Australian Financial Review understands Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has asked Special Minister of State Don Farrell to begin the process the government deemed unnecessary in December and prepare an education pamphlet to be mailed out in the lead-up to the vote.

Hardly. I just think perhaps Enough Already would be getting more bang for his buck on a forum where he’s not the only person talking about it.
It is a common tactic from Moscow to attempt to bully its opponents into silence, or to attempt to discredit their opponents voices in the minds of observers who might potentially join their opponents in resistance to the Kremlin’s will.
It’s likely that anyone elected to the Voice would be paid for their service by the Commonwealth, so that would exclude them from also running for or sitting in the federal Parliament.

A trap set by Labor for Dutton?
Labor “Oh nos we donts needs a phamphlet”
PD “Labor are against educating the public on the detail of the voice. I demand a pamphlet”
Labor “oks” proceeds to draft one for every person in the nation extolling the values of the voice and gives just the right amount of detail for folk to make an informed yes vote.

The Bragg paper outlining reasons for Tories to support the Voice is at:
https://www.andrewbragg.com/five-reasons
Lots of quotes, including from Noel Pearson, Shireen Morris (identified as an academic; Bragg doesn’t mention she was no. 3 on Labor Senate ticket in NSW in 2022), Murray Gleeson, Kenneth Hayne and even JWH.
Gleeson is quoted saying it is a far from revolutionary proposal and Hayne says the same, indeed pointing out that the Voice will hardly constrain the “decision-maker” (i.e. Minister) from rejecting advice.
In other words, consider a hypothetical scenario involving another Rio Tinto plan to destroy ancient Indigenous heritage. While Hayne in the quote does not discuss examples, he says clearly that, in formal legal terms, the Voice would not have power to ensure the heritage is saved.
The quote from Hayne does not discuss the issue of political debate and the influence of the Voice in changing the Minister’s mind through that, which is the only way that the heritage could be saved. Here is the nub. If the LNP ever get back in power before they transform their views about Indigenous rights, if they ever do, the Voice will be whistling in the wind.
What that means from the perspective of Pat Dodson, Linda Burney et. al. is that it will be vital to proceed with the rest of the Uluru Statement trio (Treaty and Truth-Telling) in a major way before the LNP have a revival.
Bragg mentions the origins of the Voice idea in discussions between Noel Pearson and Anne Twomey, crafting it to satisfy the “constitutional conservatives”, with whom he identifies. He is saying there is nothing in the Voice proposal to worry about, but asks for more time to explain it.
It is a substantive argument that will convince a few in the LNP, not only Bridget Archer but some others, probably including Senator Liddle (SA).
Timing is interesting. By pretending to still be on the fence, Dutton has allowed Bragg to outline an alternative agenda. The likelihood is that, if Dutton does not support Yes, he will have to allow a conscience vote, which will expose differences among the Tories, as on marriage equality.

The problem for all indigenous members of Parliament are that they are elected on the vote of the whole geographical electorate they seek to represent. And their duty is to that whole electorate.
There is arguably an exception where the person stands and is elected on the basis that they are doing so purely to represent a FN viewpoint (although that is highly questionable because no group in our society speaks with one mind unless they are a cult). But Dodson, Cox, Price, Burney are all elected on the basis that they will carry forward the policies of the parties they represent, not as mouthpieces for FN people.

That’s a significant change. Note that Greens Senator Dorinda Cox (WA) had questioned the plan to do away with the conventional booklet, so it was looking unlikely that this plan would have got through the Senate.
It is hardly a problem for the Yes campaign. The text of the booklet is written by the parliamentarians who vote for each view, Yes or No. The No group, even assuming it does not include Senator Thorpe, will have a harder task making coherent points. They will be short on the details.

“WWP, are you suggesting that Russia’s nearly year-long unjustified and genocidal invasion of Ukraine is becoming tiresome for you as a topic of discussion here? How terribly awful that must be for you.”
IT isn’t really a topic of discussion more a topic of obsession and repetition of much the same stuff over and over again.
You could mix up your choice from time to time. There are plenty of others to consider. Perhaps you could do a month of focus on Yemen. Or the Kurds.
Even leave the Palestinians out, I know that cruel apartheid regime has a lot of support in Australia, and that there is a lot of support for killing them for fun, so leave them out.
I’m sure there are others. In fact I know there are others.
“Dutton champions ‘diversity of opinion’ and calls for online reform of social media ‘dominated by the extreme and insidious left’”…
Like the diversity of opinion in the Daily and National Rupert and commercial TV no doubt…
The Australian Electoral Commission will send SMS and email messages to almost 400,000 Australians tomorrow to remind them to enrol to vote.
With the NSW State Election coming up in March and the intended federal referendum sometime in late 2023, the AEC is planning ahead. This activity is one of many designed to increase the already remarkable national enrolment rate of 97.1 per cent (98.3 per cent in NSW).
While the AEC does not conduct the NSW State Election, the NSW Electoral Commission does use the national electoral roll, and this is a great reminder activity ahead of March. The AEC is reassuring those who receive an email or SMS prompting them to enrol that this communication is legitimate, and uses data obtained from other government agencies. Anyone concerned about the legitimacy of a message they receive is encouraged to visit the AEC website for more information.
This isn’t the first time the AEC has sent enrolment reminders via email and SMS. Since 2016, the AEC has sent millions of similar messages that have contributed to Australia having such a complete electoral roll.

you ‘might’ be taking ‘white’ just a little too literally there, the meaning seems so obvious to me, obvious and obviously right, but still you got is so very very wrong, but it is at the level of understanding and integrity this voice abuse match here is at so fair play I guess
——————————
I know what it means but i also know the reactionaries will distort it and then use against the yes case because while the intention might be benign but its easy to read differently.
A cynical person might say about Senator Thorpe that the Greens “managed her out”, and one opinion I’ve read is that she will be forgotten soon enough, like former Senator Bernardi. But I’m not sure. Unlike Bernardi, I doubt that she will resign from the Senate and instead will stay true to herself and make full vocal use of her remaining 5 plus years

So basically she will make sure she’s on the payroll and collect all the perks for the next five years.

I don’t know her, but from her behaviour my guess is that the payroll and perks of office are secondary to the platform. It’s a consistent interpretation at least.
This timeframe for deliveries of Leopard 2 MBT’s from Germany is looking somewhat more positive for Ukraine than earlier estimates:
“Germany’s defence ministry has said Leopard 2A6 battle tanks will be available to Ukraine by the end of March. The head of the German arms maker Rheinmetall has also said it expects to send 20 to 25 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine this year. Germany’s defence minister, Boris Pistorius, made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Tuesday.”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/08/russia-ukraine-war-at-a-glance-what-we-know-on-day-350-of-the-invasion
This timeframe would certainly permit deployment for counteroffensives by late spring, if accompanied by similar quantities from other NATO allies by the same time. 🙂
Enough Already may I suggest the Radio War Nerd group on Facebook as more fertile ground for this particular fixation. They have a daily thread dedicated to the Ukraine War with all the hottest OSINT.
