Morning Consult: Albanese approval 56, disapproval 31 (open thread)

Six months along, only minor signs of erosion in Anthony Albanese’s honeymoon poll ratings.

I have nothing much to offer in the way of new material for an open thread post, for reasons I hope you’ll understand. My standby on such occasions is the regularly updated tracking poll of Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings from US pollster Morning Consult, which currently has him at 56% approval and 31% disapproval. This leaves his approval about where it was mid-year, with his disapproval having climbed a few points.

  1. If you want a clear and concise explanation why the Voice is so needed, just look up Ed Husic’s answer at the NPC just now when he was asked about the gNats decision to say ‘No’ to the Voice from the Heart. Very eloquent. And absolutely damning of ALL those who oppose it, for whatever purely political, putrescent and puerile reason they choose.

Negative attacks on the Greens for their commitment to treaties is borderline cooker behaviour.

Cutting $430 billion in export earnings overnight is cooker + slug-gate behaviour. Madness in the extreme.

Do you think Rex Douglas cares? He’s obviously on some sort of income that doesn’t require him to work at a business and keep it afloat in order to put food on the table for his family, if he has one. All he cares about is coming here every day, without fail, to try and piss on the federal Labor Party from as great a height as possible.

  3. Liberal MP Bridget Archer has signalled she’s ‘inclined’ to cross the floor to vote with the government on the Morrison censure motion tomorrow.

The national anti-corruption commission bill is set to pass after Labor successfully stared down a Greens threat to support a Coalition amendment on the appointment of the Nacc commissioner.

I think we can safely say now, after this action by The Greens:

    Greens-Coalition. Same-Same.

And that goes to The Greens support for the ‘No’ case wrt the Voice as well. Until they commit otherwise.

Like the two that oppose Australia sending aid to Ukraine in the form of coal so that they have electricity and heat this winter (one said send Chinese Solar Panels instead!!!!)

By all means let’s trot out all the old Cartel standbys …

    1. We need to export fossil fuels to help poorer countries => Rubbish. We are harming them further by doing so.

    2. Australian coal is the best in the world => Debunked. We cheated on the tests and bribed the buyers to keep quiet about it.

    3. Coal is needed to make the steel to make the wind turbines => Both wrong and irrelevant. We are talking about thermal coal, not metallurgical coal.

    4. Australia can be a Renewable Energy Superpower => In your wet dreams. We can’t even generate enough renewable power for ourselves. What idiot would propose we export renewable energy to places where power is already cheaper than here, while we continue to burn fossil fuels and pay through the nose for the privilege?

    5. Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees is still achievable. => I do believe in fairies. I do. I do.

Did I miss any? If I did, I am sure you will be only too happy trot them out for us.

  6. Can anyone link me to the actual Greens policy in regard to the Voice to Parliament?

Apologies if this has been done before and I missed it, but please do it again if that is the case.

WWP: A little bit of light reading for you, to see where the greens stand as a party

    https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/greens-lidia-thorpe-lays-out-list-of-demands-for-voice-support-20220808-p5b84x.html

The demand is for something that won’t happen. As that won’t happen, the greens don’t support the Voice. You’re just another green wishcasting everything and not even knowing the policy positions of the party you supposedly support.

Has WWP come back with his usual subterfuge? You know the one, where he puts his angry pants on and says he’s a member of the ALP actually, so don’t you dare call him a Green!

Lol, WWP. You may be a member of the ALP but there is not one policy of the ALP that I can think of that you support, unless The Greens support it as well. You’re a green tomato. Red on the outside, green at its core.

Where is the complexity in the issue?

The Statement from the Heart asked for the Voice to implemented as the first part of a 3 step process.

The complexity is that the Statement from the Heart says no such thing. What you may be confusing it with is the Yarrabah Affirmation, which came much later. The Statement from the Heart calls for both a Voice and a Makarrata Commission (generally interpreted to mean Treaty and Truth). The contemporary dialogues and the final report to Parliament called for Voice with specific constitutional responsibilities, and also a Declaration of Recognition (which seems to have been lost in the shuffle).

Gradually, the original Statement from the Heart has been watered down to be little more than a tokenistic Voice with no detail and no function. Except to make some Australians feel good, I guess.

The fines will be withdrawn by Revenue NSW after the state government conceded in a NSW Supreme Court test case that two fines were invalid.

  12. Will the NSW Nats follow their Federal Counterparts? What about the LNP QLD? Will Chrisafulli stand up to the National Party and endorse The Voice?

Scott Morrison heads for the podium

The former Liberal prime minister and member for Cook, Scott Morrison, will once again hit the international speakers’ circuit before Christmas.

According to news.com.au, Morrison has been billed as the star attraction at a new event being organised by a conservative thinktank, the Hudson Institute.

    The invitation said:

Please join Hudson Institute’s China Center for a conversation with Thirtieth Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison and Hudson Institute China Center Director Miles Yu to discuss Australia’s role in combating the threat to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Scott Morrison successfully led his nation through the most difficult and significant challenges Australia has faced since the Great Depression and the Second World War.

On the international stage, Morrison was known for his leadership role to counter an increasingly assertive China in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

On the other hand it was the Labor party who voted to disenfranchise Indigenous Australians back in 1903. The Greens have no such history.

    Petulant nath?
But Greens, who claim to be environmentalists, has a history of voting against Climate change policy in 2009.

Thanks for the link. The fun those two guys are having at Mr Musk’s expense is entertaining, and they neatly package Twitter’s financial situation if anyone is interested in that side of him.

Regarding Mr Musk’s acumen, I’ve noticed he’s now attacking his advertisers for not advertising. “Elon Musk @elonmusk · 10h · Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?” It’s like labelling voters dumb for not voting for you.

Whack! Noel Pearson on Jacinta Price:

“ It involves right-wing people, particularly the Sydney and Melbourne-based right-wing think tanks – the Institute of Public Affairs and the Centre for Independent Studies – they’re the string pullers. They’re the ones who have lined up behind Jacinta. This has been a campaign in the making over the last three years, and their strategy was to find a blackfella to punch down on other blackfellas.
The bullets are fashioned by the CIS and the IPA but…it’s a black hand pulling the trigger.
I sincerely believe this is a tragic situation. A tragic celebrity vortex that will make something of a political career for Jacinta but will produce no solutions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia.”

Pearson on the duplicity of the Nats and lack of leadership (and I’d add in basic integrity) of their ‘leader’:

“ I’ve spoken to almost every Nationals senator and MP over recent years. And of all the political parties, the Nationals were the most supportive of the idea of the Voice.
This leader, supposed leader Littleproud… he’s like a kindergarten kid, not a leader. The Nationals have hoisted the mantle of leadership on a boy who’s incapable of [the] leadership that’s necessary for the country.”

“BREAKING: Twitter has begun reinstating 62,000 accounts that were permanently suspended.”

That is probably it for me. I can always block Trump. But it is the thousands of Trump worshipping loons he will activate that will make it not worthwhile remaining on Twitter.

  28. If the Federal Liberal Party had any balls at all, it would vote with Albanese on the Morrison censure.
Morrison’s excuse was feeble. It was the action of a self centred second rate Prime Minister who thought he was a superior politician.
Can you imagine Whitlam or Fraser or Keating or Hawke or Howard and those that followed- with the likely exception of Rudd and Turnbull- even contemplating such an ego driven decision.
Liberals, now is your chance to do what millions of Australians would do.
