Around the traps

As the government approaches the middle of its term, the first sighting of early election speculation in the wild.

Dennis Shanahan of The Australian reckons “two basic assumptions are driving the economic and political debate in 2021”, and that one of these is that there will be an election late next year. The other is that COVID-19 restrictions will start to ease in the coming months; “neither is certain”. The government’s election window opens in the middle of the year, at which point the Senators given six-year terms after the 2016 double dissolution will enter the final year of the terms, the period in which the half-Senate election to replace them may be held.

That will do as a kick-off for a new open thread, which is needed because there are so many other posts flying around at the moment. For convenience, these include:

• Adrian Beaumont’s New Zealand live election count post, which will begin in earnest when polls close at 7pm New Zealand time and 5pm Australian eastern daylight time – to be followed an hour later by my own live commentary post on the Australian Territory election. And if you’re a Crikey subscriber, you can read my collective preview of the two here.

• Also from Adrian Beaumont, a review of the US situation.

• A post on a Newspoll result showing Labor leading 52-48 in Queensland.

• Another post on the Queensland campaigning detailing relevant recent developments.

• A post on a Ten News uComms poll from New South Wales showing strong support for Gladys Berejiklian.

  1. Gladys is supposed, as Premier, to be better than what she has been. Any lines about havin’ been done wrong by her man do genuine feminism a great disservice.

  2. I listened to peeps like Andrew E, Bushfire, Sprockets – and Gladys was gone by the end of the week – yet here we are Saturday night and she is in situ. What happened?

  3. “ Efficiency?
Assuming there were separate “triggers” for the different calibre weapons, pinging light/unarmoured fighter escorts with .303’s first makes sense – you keep the heavier calibres in reserve for the bombers.”

Nope. Single trigger. All the guns go off in sync. At least that’s what I understand the situation with late war spitfires.

Perhaps the answer is simply that there was a lot of production capacity in Australia for .303 ammo, whereas .5 cal was in demand (especially given that our front line fighter squadrons were flying mustangs- each using 6 x .5 cals each.). After all the main weapon was the 20mm hispanos- so 2 x .5 versus 4 x .303 as the secondary weapons didn’t really matter much.

  4. Gladys has been in the know about dodgy deals or completely stupid – in any case not fit to be Premier.

I would not necessarily rejoice to see her go – she’s been broadly moderate and sensible and she would likely be replaced by someone from the hard / religious right

  5. Just listened to Ardern’s victory speech. There is her and then there is Albo…no comparison. Albo needs to take a good hard look at himself as to whether he persists.

Albo should spill his leadership – to clear the air!

  7. There is no air to clear and I don’ think there are any knives out either, BUT? The simple fact is Albanese is not up to the task.

  8. Lib von Tryhard must be disappointed with the humiliation of conservatives in NZ and the ACT. Maybe her heroes Freckles and Dotard can ‘right the ship’ in coming weeks.

  9. I just feel that he is completely underwhelming. When you listen to Ardern and see how she carries herself, you sit back and say wow now that is charisma. With Albanese not so much!

  10. Albo could have been a good leader but he’s come to it too late in the day!

It has to be sensitive Jim! The Caucus shall so hold!

  12. Yah no…sometimes its a bit ridiculous. Anyone in Labor does badly at some insignificant speech or something…DUMP ALBO!!! Labor anywhere is the world does well at anything…….DUMP ABLO!!!!

FFS…the Lib boosters here really need to find a narrative that’s not thoroughly mummified. 🙁

Could be big changes in politics in the next 12 months. Possible for Progressive wins in QLD, USA, W.A and maybe the booting of Morriscum’s pathetic band of economically illiterate shysters and environmental vandals before the end of 2021?? 🙂

The election will be held in late 2021 if the Government has a comfortable lead in the polls then. If not, then it will be held March or May 2022.

At least we won’t have to watch Scummo from Marketing’s scalp fungal cultures grow for at least a couple of days – though I note he’s sent the Criminal Tudge out to hold the NZ import hose.

  15. But Mundo, Albanese is the greatest. Nobody can raise any concerns about him. Those who chastise us know better because Labor won… no wait… no.. oh fuck!

  16. Dump Albo? Well, there’s no messiah waiting in the wings, no Bob Hawke, no Kevin07, no Jacinda Ardern. Who would do better in the current circumstances?

We might be a year out from the next election. No one pays much attention during a crisis, so maybe Albo chose to keep his powder dry. However, Morrison’s instincts are completely unsuited to lead Australia out of the Covid recession. This is where a strong Opposition can cut through. Albo needs to hit his straps soon.

  17. Ah the the orcs over at the Rupertarium being very wishful.
    .

News.com.au’s initial reporting of the results suggested that the outcome had been quite different.

    .
Ooops, they forgot no Rupert in NZ so had to swap for…

  18. News.com.au now says….

I wonder if the person who has suddenly developed a deeply passionate interest in Gladys as well as John Barilaro and seems prepared to die on Glad & John’s hill as if their life depended on it, is actually tweeting as a dispassionate observer or as a lobbyist in their new job?

Well, that’s a bit damn tawdry, if so. I thought her standards were higher than that!

“Well certain people on here were convinced Gladys would be gone by Friday steve777. Yet here she is.”

I’ll quote what the master Paul Keating said about a previous Liberal leader that you would have adored,
    About John Howard
“What we have got is a dead carcass, swinging in the breeze, but nobody will cut it down to replace him.”
Replace the him and who have we got?
Gotta love Keating, don’t you agree Lars?

“Petition for a Royal Commission into a diverse media is now over 307,000!!!”

Labor/ALP need to take note of this.

Bill Shorten did by snubbing Rupert.

Over to you *Albo and company.

*Albo you need to show the guts your team the Bunnies did in going down to defeat!
Bit of mongrel doesn’t hurt, take the slippers off, drop the latte and get out there brother!

  23. It took until 3 weeks before the Presidential election in the US for the rats to start deserting the sinking ship, SS Trump:

WASHINGTON — For nearly four years, congressional Republicans have ducked and dodged an unending cascade of offensive statements and norm-shattering behavior from President Trump, ignoring his caustic and scattershot Twitter feed and penchant for flouting party orthodoxy, and standing quietly by as he abandoned military allies, attacked American institutions and stirred up racist and nativist fears.

But now, facing grim polling numbers and a flood of Democratic money and enthusiasm that has imperiled their majority in the Senate, Republicans on Capitol Hill are beginning to publicly distance themselves from the president. The shift, less than three weeks before the election, indicates that many Republicans have concluded that Mr. Trump is heading for a loss in November. And they are grasping to save themselves and rushing to re-establish their reputations for a coming struggle for their party’s identity.

Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska unleashed on Mr. Trump in a telephone town hall event with constituents on Wednesday, eviscerating the president’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and accusing him of “flirting” with dictators and white supremacists and alienating voters so broadly that he might cause a “Republican blood bath” in the Senate.

What a pack of immoral losers!

So much like our current Federal and NSW State governments.

I give a pass to SA and Tassie because they have done the right thing, not that you would know looking at the MSM and our ABC (RIP).

  25. Tudge caught in a fudge:

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews threatened to close his state’s borders unless federal authorities stop travellers who use the bubble from boarding planes for Victoria.

Acting federal immigration minister Alan Tudge said the arrivals should not have surprised the Andrews government because it had been discussed by the nation’s top health committee on Monday where he said Victoria’s Chief Health Officer was present.

That contradicted Professor Sutton’s claim that he was not present at the meeting. “I wasn’t there on Monday,” he said on Saturday.

  26. While I’m on Paul Keating quotes I thought I’d throw this one in, and this about one of his own, just to balance it for you progressive haters out there,
(you pretenders as well, yes you know who you are).

To former ALP MP Jim McClelland:

“That you Jim? Paul Keating here. Just because you swallowed a fucking dictionary when you were about 15 doesn’t give you the right to pour a bucket of shit over the rest of us.”

    Cop that Jim!

Apologies about the language, maybe we can ask Gladys to edit for us.

  28. ‘ Given 3 Squadron started using Mustangs in late 1944, I’m surprise we had orders in for Spitfires.’

No.80 wing – raised in Darwin in May 1944, and based in Morotai later that year, flew spitfires. The wing initially comprised 452 and 457 squadrons, but no. 79 squadron later joined. When the squadron was raised it was equipped with old MkV spitfires (which may have had a dual firing mechanism, or not), but converted to the MkVIII with the Merlin 70 – high altitude engine from July. That being the case the initial order would have actually been placed by the RAAF in early to mid 1943 – when the 2 canon – 4 x .303s were a pretty standard configuration across the range. The one in Temora was the last ever spitfire received by the RAAF – and it was never sent overseas on service.

The choice of the Merlin 70 is interesting, as it was the high altitude variant. Possibly because the initial plan was for no.80 wing to become a high altitude air superiority fighter force based in Selaru, NEI. But McArthur postponed the Selaru campaign until after the fall of the Philippines. So No.80 wing were pretty under utilised. This led to a loss of morale and ultimately the Morotai mutiny – which saw a number of officers disciplined – including the initial commander – Clive killer Caldwell – Australia’s top ww2 air ace.
