Victorian COVID-19 polling, etc.

A new poll suggests Victorians remain sympathetic to Daniel Andrews, despite waning patience with COVID-19 restrictions.

It’s time for a new general discussion thread, but do take note of the other important new posts below this one before diving in:

• New state polling from Western Australia suggests there will be little left of the parliamentary Liberal Party after the election there in March;

• Guest contributor Adrian Beaumont offers his weekly situation report on the ever-eventful US election campaign;

• I launch my Queensland election guide, and in doing so provide a thread for discussion of that state’s October 31 election;

• I humbly plead for donations, as I do every two months.

Other than that, there is one further poll to report on in the shape of a Roy Morgan SMS poll from Victoria, following on from a similar efforts two and three weeks ago. This finds the Labor state government’s two-party lead unchanged at 51.5-48.5, but Daniel Andrews is down nine on approval to 61% and up nine on disapproval to 39%. There has also been movement in sentiment against existing COVID-19 restrictions, with a 61-39 split in favour of lifting the five kilometre rule (50-50 last time), 59-41 in favour of visits to immediate family members (55-45 in favour last time) and 56-44 in favour of a resumption of table service (63-37 against last time). The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday from a sample of 2223.

  1. GG,
Can you provide an example of this ‘meme’ labor has created? I’ll be shocked, shocked I tells ya if Albo’s been out there engaging and I the humble voter have been left out.

    Also GG,
You talk about Chalmers, but the leader is Albo. Are you saying there’s a problem with Albo, or just writing off the next election so Chalmers can ripen up?

  2. Mr Dreyfus QC should encourage the Government to appeal Justice Flick’s judgment because that appeal will embrace Justice Wigney and Justice Perry’s earlier concerns about the actions of a minister.

With three on the Full Federal Court, the minster could be six (and hopefully out).

Seems like every time there’s a real vote Labor does OK.

Saying someone is emerging as a leader doesn’t mean anything but someone is emerging as a leader.

But you play your anti-labor games, comrade.

1/5. There are a lot of people not in VIC passing a shedload of commentary ATM about how people in VIC do (or, more to the point) should feel & behave.

They mostly forget that VICs, more than any other Aussies, are in “fight or flight” mode RN, & most are under immense stress.

2/5. If you’re not in VIC, perhaps think back to how you felt in Mar/Apr this year.

If you’re honest, it was a helluva time but you’ve forgotten what most of it felt like.

Well, VICs are still in the middle of that, but worse.

    Way worse.

We HAVE to beat this wave.

We all know #NewsCorpse media act in bad faith, but forget that for us VICs, the lies & bias is intensely personal.

This is NOT a theoretical exercise.

But if you’re standing up for those opposing lockdown, be aware VICs are unlikely to cut you much slack RN, especially if you’re from interstate.

Because you have NFI how much this feels like a war we have to win, to save lives.

We’re in a fight you barely understand & our health is more important than your hurt feels.

Labor would win Queensland election if it was held today, YouGov poll shows

ANNASTACIA Palaszczuk looks poised to claim victory at the 2020 election with the Premier’s popularity surging during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Courier-Mail’s exclusive YouGov Poll of 2000 Queenslanders has revealed the Premier’s resurgent popularity has helped Labor eclipse the party’s primary vote at the 2017 state election.

On a two-party preferred basis, Labor leads the LNP 52 per cent to 48 per cent, the reverse result of another poll undertaken just four months ago.

The stunning turnaround in Labor’s electoral fortunes represents a swing to the Palaszczuk Government of slightly less than one per cent, putting the Premier in the box seat to claim a third term.

That article must have been written through gritted teeth in the hope that it would spark an underdog reaction for the LNP.

Seems sensible considering the state of the climate, society and world

The party not beholden to donors and vested interests and therefore MPs more likely to act in the genuine interests of their electorates and Qld.

With one of the highest rates of rooftop solar penetration in the world there must be widespread support and awareness of Qld’s renewable energy opportunities and Greens policies for 100% renewables grid by 2030. With a growing concern about the reef, forests and lands of Qld through more drought and heat. A post covid plan and stimulus ready to go, health, education, housing and Green steel. Seems like a rational stimulus to consider with voting, who will genuinely push for what is required and not sell out the state to the likes of Adani and add to the carbon pollution and ecological burden for everyone into the future.

That’s good news for Palaszczuk, Labor, confirmation of her hard stance on closed borders. My only concern is that it might not be as good for Labor federally. Albanese needs to deliver a corker on Thursday, failing which his position must surely be at risk. I’d add that although Chalmers is still wet behind the ears, as a Queenslander he’s got a foot in – ala Rudd.

  17. So, road spending and tax cuts. The first doesn’t deliver much in the way of jobs for the dollars spent and the second will just bake in a structural deficit while worsening inequality. Old ideas from a government that really doesn’t have much of a clue about anything except spin.

  18. The good polling for Paluszczuk is not surprising and consistent with polling in other States where Covid has been well managed. Here in SA the Marshall Liberal government is polling better, despite the worst unemployment rate in the country and three senior Ministers/MPs stepping aside because of expense rorting allegations.

Despite his rhetoric about the economic damage Paluszczuk and Andrews have wrought on Qld and Vic, Scomo has made no criticism of Marshall’s approach in SA. This is despite Marshall following virtually identical Covid border policies as Paluszczuk and Andrews. The only difference is that there have been no infection slip-ups in SA, which I put down to a lower rate of air movements and good work by SA Health and Police. The economic performance here has been worse.

I am surprised no journos have pointed out this obvious inconsistency, which demonstrates the politicised way Scomo has used Covid from May 2020 on.

  19. Bc

Agreed on the roads, although it varies. The tax cuts deliver even fewer jobs per dollar than the road works. If the road funds go to rural highway maintenance and PT works they do better on the jobs front. Big freeway tunnels and toll roads mainly employ people in merchant banks.

For what its worth the real numbers are roughly as follows:
Gas industry 0.3 jobs per million $
Tax cuts 1 job per million $
Freeway tunnels 1.5 jobs per million $
Surface roads 2 jobs per million $
Public transport 3 jobs per million $
Asset maintenance 4 jobs per million $
Health. 5 jobs per million $
Education 7 jobs per million $

Maybe the Queensland voters think the Greens are not fit for elected office? This from John Meyer, a former member and disendorsed candiadate..

    Mr Meyer said:

“the QLD Greens went to the press and went public first, with a deliberately framed defamatory press release on 1 September 2020 implying I had acted inappropriately towards women. This is a lie and I deny it categorically. I have never threatened or intimidated any woman and the QLD Greens know it; they never made any such accusations to me nor provided any evidence in the lead up to my disendorsement, including the written demand to appear before a kangaroo court, during the kangaroo court, and in my disendorsement letter. They only ever formally accused me of threatening to take action to procure more resources, and of refusing to meet with them. The false accusation relating to behaviour towards women only appeared, one hour after my disendorsement, in the QLD Greens’ press release.”

“I never made any ‘allegations’ against the party; I raised concerns and tried to get them addressed. I never threatened to go public with my concerns; I said I would address them within the party structure and with the relevant government agencies. I did not demand more resources for my campaign; I made reasonable demands to address in writing what I saw as anomalies and possibly unethical/illegal arrangements. Contrary to the impression given by the QLD Greens I did not refuse to attend meetings; I only refused to attend any more meetings after I had made my request for responses in writing, after getting nowhere in the previous weeks. I was then called to a kangaroo court, which I did attend, before being disendorsed that same day on a lie. They are lying and I have the evidence to prove it.”

“The QLD Greens are playing dirty, gutter politics. They bang on about being more ethical and moral than the major parties, they have billboards all over the city saying ‘stop corruption’, but I’ve never seen Labor or the LNP falsely accuse a candidate of abusing women.”

  21. I’m sure Quoll would like to see how John Meyer and his ex-wife concluded their spray. (And I thought the NSW chapter was riddled with personality cult and fringe Trotskyists)..

‘John Meyer’s ex-wife Ms King has also come out in support and provided the following statement for publication:

“As John’s ex-wife, and also current member of The Greens, I am very disappointed with how John has been treated by the party. I know John, his principles, and his personal ethics, and I can’t think of anything further than what John stands for as a person, and as a politician, than the implications made by the Queensland Greens in their statements to party members and the press. John has my full support, and I have expressed my concern to the local branch about the decisions made and the handling of the whole situation.”

Mr Meyer questioned what was really behind his victimisation, with such swift and harsh retaliation for his lawful actions that were made in good faith internally within the party processes.

“The QLD Greens leadership threw justice and transparency under the bus by abandoning their values to reward bullying behaviour of a self interested circle of faceless people at the top. This was a key test of the principles and character of the QLD Greens leadership and they have failed that test.”

  25. SA did an amazing thing in late January (I think) ..they choose to routinely test respiratory and nasal swaps for Covid…and got ahead of the game, and for a while had the highest testing rates in the world. Call it luck or brilliance, it made all the difference.

  26. LOL the Greens talking up their poll numbers before an election but some things never get old and i bet its because there is a surge in young people on the roll.

  27. 2020 is one long Soviet anecdote in which the only people allowed to disregard social distancing by gathering to protest in the thousands and tens of thousands do so to complain about their oppression. It’s a mock dystopia in which corporate CEOs berate their employees about their privilege and fire anyone who won’t confess their privilege, and government officials and agencies lecture the people they rule at length about the terrible evils of systemic racism.

Speech is violence and violence is speech. Throwing firebombs is in the First Amendment, but saying All Lives Matter is literally killing people. The only people who don’t have privilege are the ones who have special privileges. Criminals have a right to be safe from the police, but people don’t have a right to be safe from criminals. Public safety is now about keeping criminals safe from the police by defunding the police so that no one except the criminals can be safe. …

    Living by lies:

The real news is what’s read between the lines of the lies. What people say is the opposite of the truth. At struggle sessions, academics and executives confess that they’re racist to prove that they’re not racist. The only people who can safely claim not to have privilege, have that privilege. No one at work will admit to voting for President Trump, but someone must have.

The more speech is banned, the more worthless is the speech that is still allowed.

Polls become useless when people are too afraid to tell partisan pollsters the truth.

Seeing that phalanx walk out to do what amounted to a simple presser looked incredibly fake and … weak … to me. Clearly it must work on some groups though. Maybe it’s a particularly American thing, maybe it’s simple PR/psychology “well if ALL these people came out then the whole thing must have weight, seriousness, science, truth behind it”. But surely it just smacks of desperation theatre. But then again I long ago learnt that I’m completely out of touch with what your typical man-in-the-street thinks.
