Newspoll: 50-50

Scott Morrison gains further momentum in his remarkable but apparently voteless approval rating turnaround.

Courtesy of The Australian, the first Newspoll in three weeks is consistent with the last in suggesting the coronavirus surge in approval for Scott Morrison in translating into only a modest dividend on voting intention, on which the two parties are now tied after the Coalition opened up a 51-49 lead last time. On the primary vote, the Coalition is down a point to 41%, Labor up two to 36%, the Greens down one to 12% and One Nation down one to 4%. Despite that, Scott Morrison has gained further on his huge approval rating boost in the last poll, up seven to 68% — a level not seen since Kevin Rudd reached 70% in late 2008 — while his disapproval rating is down seven to 28%. Anthony Albanese is respectively steady at 45% and down two to 34% (I assume — the report says 36%, but this would be unchanged on last time), and Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is now 56-28, out from 53-29. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1519.

The point is the Overton window is shifting.

Business organisations are saying let’s build social housing.
A policy the Greens wanted Labor to go further on however it was a Labor policy.

The difference is now business is on board.

    That’s what’s different

If you do not like it, well, DILLIGAF?

  3. Three questions that need to be answered before COVID can be eradicated
    1. Is there an animal reservoir?
    2. What is the mutation potential?
    3. How long is the immunity, if any, gained from infection?

It took 200 years after the finding of a vaccine to eradicate Smallpox, a stable virus with life long Immunity and no animal reservoir.
70 years after finding a vaccine for polio, a stable virus with life long Immunity and no animal reservoir, we are almost but not quite there.

Bernie calls himself a socialist and his local fans and i take it that you are one of them did talk up the idea of American embracing socialism.

Both the Australian left and right love American politics but Australia does many things differently and i would say in many cases better than Americans do it with the health system being one of them.

It’s good you are exposing that you are opposed to building more housing and tackling homelessness.

Bob Hawke and Kevin Rudd would be so happy with you.

  6. In 2015 a group of researchers also visited the caves in Yunnan. They identified 6 people from a nearby village population that tested positive for a SARS-like corona virus that was also present in the bat population. To confirm their serology, the study group tested a like-sized control group of SARS-free humans from Wuhan.

There is a transparently obvious possible transmission vector from Yunnan to Wuhan of a virus with a 96% match to the virus that has led to COVID-19.

This possible vector should be the subject of further testing and analysis. It arises from an academically rigorous and publicly available report.

  7. Why is Morrison and his cronies so late in reacting on things

1- Morrison and his cronies were late to react in the bushfires crisis

2- Morrison was late in closing the borders and forcing mandatory isolation for those who arrive from overseas and for those who were infected with the corona virus.

3- Morrison and his cronies are late in bigger numbers testing for the corona virus around Australia

  8. Yes Scott. I guess that HC case could be heard after the class action of the children of Springfield vs Santa Clause is resolved

All I ever said was socialism is not the slam dunk toxic term it was in the past.

The Primary campaign did prove that correct.

The GOP effectiveness at using that label has faded.
The fear of Democrats of Trump in the White House was a bigger factor and how Biden won.

Those voters did not want to gamble on labels destroying a candidate because historic baggage.

It actually exposes you as the deflector and verbaliser you’ve always been.

None of what you say is true.

But, William allows you to pedal your traducements without intervention because you are apparently a pet of some description.

How can Morrison keep this hapless happyclapper in the ministry?

Easy peasy. Two words, ‘happy’ and ‘clapper’ . The idiot also has a bonus feature for Scrott. His fluck ups take attention away from Scrott’s performance.

  13. GG

Then why are you arguing against something Labor and as you assert you are for?

Just because I pointed out business is calling for spending on social housing.

Saying Labor should move left on this issue does not mean Labot should suddenly be radical communists.

Honestly, labelling someone a ‘Sinophobe’ simply because they correctly identified the origin of COVID-19 is laughable.

    1. You haven’t identified anything. You ranted about wet markets. Nothing is proven in that respect. Nothing. Consider – if wet markets were a likely vector for zoonotic disease transmission we’d likely see a lot more of it. There are hundreds of thousands – even millions- of wet markets. They are used by a billion people hundreds of times every year. There are problems with the handling and slaughter of animals in China. But this does not mean they are a sure and certain vector in this instance, no matter how much you might rave about it.

    2. Your Sinophobia is to be found in your ranting about China…ranting in which you depict Chinese as dirty, untrustworthy, greedy, deceptive, diseased and – earlier today – as impliedly using a virus to further their geopolitical ambitions. This is so plainly prejudiced it barely calls for an explanation.

You’re Trumpy. Get used to it.

    You’re F.I.T.H. I’m used to that.

None of the links you have provided, which I took the time to read, nor the frankly offensive contribution of some bizarre article about Anti China sentiment in America, has proven anything, zip, nada, about my so-called ‘Sinophobia’. What IS offensive is your continued assertion of same based upon zero evidence bar that you have cooked up in your fried brains. What a sad descent for a once cogent contributor.

  16. I think C@t is waiting to be tested.

Providing the opportunity and facility for her to be tested is, in my opinion, many times of more benefit than some tracking app of dubious quality and security.

  17. The published information on the incidence of corona viruses in bat populations and the occurrence of bat-to-human transmission suggests that the researchers themselves are possible vectors.

This is intuitively possible. Human researchers have systematically gone in search of SARS-like viruses in bat populations. They have trapped, sedated and drawn samples from the bats – blood, urine, excreta and saliva samples. They’ve done it in the dark. How likely is it that if bat-to-human transmission is possible that it could have occurred during this kind of sampling?

    Fatuous nonsense, Scott.

    Please try harder.

There are bushfires areas which have still not receive any funding which was promise

Morrison and his cronies should have closed the border and brought in mandatory isolation as soon as late February

Morrison and his cronies should have testing of at least 50,000 citizens each week around the country , starting Mid March

“The Tasmanian Government has done a pretty job in general: very clear and consistent communication from the politicians and health officials and the hospitals were very well prepared for the flood of ICU cases that never actually arrived. Perhaps the government could have done more testing (our rates are pretty low), but my sources tell me that – beyond the N-W – people simply aren’t coming forward for tests because they don’t have any symptoms.”

Yeah, no. I would argue there was patchy communication to health staff and Tasmanians overall. People aren’t coming forward for testing as ‘have any symptoms and we will test’ edict only came out on Friday last week and hasn’t been conveyed to the public. Poorly prepared for the flood of ICU cases highlighted by staff being instructed to collect used ‘one use only’ masks so they could be sterilised and used again. Testing has finally picked up but only because health staff in the NW have to have a clear result to return to work. Lots of testing in the NW, minimal elsewhere.

Well there ya go , until now I thought it stood for what the NBN was meant to be ‘Fiber Into The Home’ 🙂

  25. Asked what is an acceptable number of cases? Murphy answers “below 20 per day”.

So our CMO is happy with several hundred carriers wandering the streets at any given moment and thinks we can contain the multiple simultaneous outbreaks that would result.

    Fuck me.

A treatment is probably as likely as a vaccine in the short term. Although we are really bad at antivirals (domestos excepted).

  27. Scott
Should the testing of 50,000 people per week in mid March been achieved through some sort of compulsion – perhaps police action?

  28. ” To my way of thinking, the latter type of criminal is more likely to offend again than the former.”

Putting someone into extended custody is almost certain to lead to repeat offending, as has been found in numerous studies from time immemorial. The best leading indicator for someone going to gaol is that they have been there before, and the younger they were the first time, the more certain it becomes. Prison is pointless, ineffectual revenge, not rehabilitation.
There exists no evidence, whatsoever, that prison produces any beneficial result, either for the offender, or society as a whole.

Bill Peach, of fond remembrance, did an excellent series on the whole disastrous shambles for the ABC.

  29. Hoax COVIDSafe text begins to circulate
A hoax text message has begun to circulate online, claiming to detect COVIDSafe app users travelling 20km away from home.

Nine News reports the text message claims to come from the government app, which was unveiled to the public yesterday.

“The COVIDSafe app has detected you are now +20km from your nominated home address. Please register your reason for travel by calling 1300 1MY GOV within 15 minutes of receiving this SMS,” the message reads.

The fake text message comes amid privacy concerns around the app.

  30. If Queenslanders want to dob someone in to the police it’s as easy as…..

“The online form will be hosted on the Policelink platform and allow people to supply information online via their computer or smartphone.”
